Decided to go with Note II instead of the Nexus 4, just some questions - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

Tired of the wait and the reviews coming back that the battery isn't all that great compared to the Galaxy Nexus (which I have and totally sucks haha).
1. I saw a screen shot with on screen buttons, is this a ROM feature or something that can be flashed?
2. Currently I don't think any ROM has multiwindow and wifi calling together but when the official multiwindow update comes out, we should see both features included in a ROM right?
3. I saw the phone in person and it was just HUGE. I don't mind the physical size but everything on the screen just looked big, like it was blown up. Is there anyway to include more on the screen?
4. If i install a launcher (Apex Launcher), will I lose any S-Pen features?

1. Not that I know of.
2. Yes.
3. You will get used to the size in a week. after a week I felt the pone was perfect and other phones felt like toys. especially my old 4S.
4. Not at all.

If rooted you can add the following line to your build.prop to get the on screen navigation buttons
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0

1) see post above
2) yes. It is possible now with wildchild's XquiziT rom, flash v4 set up wifu calling, flash v6 for multi Window. Just dont wipe between fladhes and u get both.
3) set text size to small helps.
4) only thing you lose is page buddy and to me its annoying anyway.

thanks for the replies. i'm gonna drop by T-Mobile today to check it out again before the Cyber Monday sale ends.

[Q] Tablet Mode

I rooted my Note 2 (amazingly easy via Note toolkit, thanks), then installed Rom Toolbox and set the DPI to 180. Guess what - NO TABLET MODE! Yes, some apps were with split screen interface, but I saw no navigation bar and no unified notification bar. I am sorely missing the nav bar to the point that I might go back to my beloved Galaxy Nexus.
I guess Samsung have thrown stock Android tablet mode completely out with their Note 2 ROMs.
I can see that Paranoid Android is a ways off, and despite myself I like the S Pen and its associated features, so I was hoping to switch to tablet mode and have the best of both worlds. No luck.
Anyone have any idea how to improve this situation?
It seems like its your first time using any non-nexus phone
There is no tablet mode in stock touchwiz/sense etc if you lower dpi...
They just decrease in size, and apps like keyboard which dont have a "tablet mode" in them FC.
However in Note I there WAS a way to introduce navigation bar for stock rom too...ill post it here so please tell me if it works
Ill be awaiting your feedback :good:

This is the mod...
You just made me remind it
How dare you , just look at my signature! But yes, after Android 4.0, I have been using Galaxy Nexus only - in between I bought a Galaxy Note, flashed stock ICS ROM on it, and enjoyed the tablet benefits. But its horrendous battery life on that ROM made me return to the GNex. I bought Note 2 on launch and am already regretting it because TW is so FUGLY compared to AOSP JB. Thanks for sharing the mod, I will try it and report back

So you are willing to go back to nexus to have the navigation bar that you miss on the Note 2 with 180 dpi? Sure ParanoidAndroid is a solution.. but that means losing S Pen functionality. Then again.. so does moving back to nexus. Might aswell stick to Note 2 legends.

Why not use the Nova Launcher then ? Sure, it's not stock JB, but gets rid of TW and keeps the goodies intact.. (except for the buddy pages, but these are not that significant...)

bro can i know if the mod worked? so that i can add it to my jb mod collection
Stock ROMs does include some of the TW tablet roms components - for example, minimode-res.apk - is responsible for running tablet miniapps on Samm tablets. It has no reason to be on phone ROM but it is included. (Is also included in JB stock rom) Only reason why tablet mode do not work well, is some of the NOTE apks are HDPI+XHDPI, but as soon as you lower your DPI, android will start to recognize apps as LARGE/XLARGE MDPI/HDPI and there is no programmed layout for the apps to be running this mode.
See my signature, there is a hacked ICS SystemUi.apk from Tablet 7,7, which is running fine on Note1 with 213dpi and 160dpi(160dpi breaks call functionality) - mod taken from US Note1, thanks Dagr8, Wanam might be there also included, Qaazi76 for posting.... Thank to them, hopefully there will be also interest to run tablet mode on JB Note2 from devs.
After i just replaced that SystemUi on Note1, you have "microtablet" on 160dpi, with miniapps running from Note 10,1, some apps, Splanner, Email from Tablets are running....but there are some gugs. 213dpi works fine, also calls work just Contacts.apk is broken but still usable as a Phone for daily in TW tablet mode. Anyway, this is NOTE 2 related so...i believe that stock JB rom is capable to run Tablet, just needs some hacking.
So, as soon as some samsung tablet gets JB, hopefully some of the previous hackers (dagr8,etc...) will work on tablet UI for stock TW rom. Or, they may take the previous hacked systemUi as a sample, or somebody might just try to replace the systemUi from the thread just to try.
Hopefully they will work on it as i still keep N1 cause tablet mode. Sorry Samsung, but i see no sense to have big screen with big fonts, icons etc...Your stock UI for NOTEs is wrong!!!
Layout after setting to 213dpi - is very OK for the screen size (I mean Note1)
160dpi - is too small

add this line at the end of build.prop to enable:

tested with N2 on samsung based rom and worked.

Google has nailed it with 4.2! :D

So after a couple of hours (20+ hours ) i have used stock 4.2 with root. No other modifications.
What I think:
-excellent speed, no lag or slowdowns
-excellent battery life with the new kernel
-the colors of the screen are much better!
-lovely new camera app
Everything is just perfect. What do you guys think of 4.2?

I love it! It's really fast, smooth and stable. Not a single problem in now almost two days. I like new additions, I got used to them right away. But, I've mentioned this before, the new "recent apps" is bothering me. It's really, really bothering me. I like that I can use the recent apps button while in-app to close it, but it stops right there. It's buggy like hell and it makes me feel like I'm on a nightly ROM each time I close an app. And I preferred the transparent look from 4.1. I seriously hope they'll fix it soon. Argh.
But, nevertheless, I love 4.2 - it's amazing.

Well, everything is perfect expect 3 things.
1. lockscreen is a fail... o.o... after i slide to other widget page do something and come back to page where i can unlock my device i have to press a button to get the lockring? O.O also when i resize widgets i gets the lockring to another page and doesnt save the resize wtf really?
2. recent apps is cool, but its laggy. swiping apps is laggy, dont know why? hope we get the fix soon
3. power widgets at notifaction thing is not really widgets. example: if i press wifi toggle, it doesnt turn off or on wifi, it just takes you to wifi settings where you cant turn wifi on or off

of course they updated the kernel! look at the build date! and if nothing changed from the previous kernel, they could have used that one. they used a new one, and there are new changes. look at the 4.2 kernel source and you'll see
Not entirely they fubar'd the internal sdcard. Now everytime you flash a new ROM it will create a new partition in the /sdcard/ titled /0/ and you're f'd if you need a backup because thats in /sdcard/ while you're in /sdcard/0/0 :S

And you also seem a bit confused to the lock screen as well. But I'll let you figure that out

Guys I see many of you have lags and bugs, i suggest to wipe everything before flashing, that's what I did and I have no lag or bugs in recent apps or elsewhere...and I'm usually very picky about lags and framerate drops...really 4.2 is as smooth or better than 4.1.2 here...gmail and recent apps are smoother than ever, facebook feed scrolling is finally totally smooth, and generally 4.2 feels fast and solid, I see some nice tweaked animations here and there...
That being said I expected much more from the google development team, sure WP8 lacks a solid ecosystem, but the os itself has some cool features that I'd like to see on android...like the all in one chat app, or the app-personalized lockscreen...our lockscreen widgets can't even compare to that...seems like android team is out of imagination and is just implementing small and not useful things here and there instead of pushing boundaries

So...basically you want them to push boundaries but manage to release a very stable and solid ROM, sometimes as soon as a few months after the last release (4.0>4.1>4.2 in less than a year)? I somehow have a feeling if they had revolutionized the OS but couldn't manage to smooth out a few bugs, you'd be on here hating them for not releasing a stable ROM. I think maybe you should start deving and realize the time and effort it takes to bring new features with true stability.

[Q] new owner...two questions

hey guys. finally made the move to the Note II...and of course now I have questions!
I'm on the rooted stock L900VPALJC from this forum.
1) how do I get the ink effect to work? it's selected, I have ripple effect selected, and I don't have any live wallpaper selected. still, no ink effect.
- I really wanted this on the S3 but it wasn't quite working...but now i'm on a stock rom and still, nothing?
2) how come there is no remote control on this rom? it was in the custom Jelly Bomb rom I was on with the GS3 but it didn't work...I was hoping it would work on this phone.
thanks for the help.

thanks for the help...if I can call it that. the attitude certainly wasn't necessary.
in the Galaxy S3 the ink effect obviously did not require the use of the pen. I also don't see why I would unlock my phone with the pen, so I had not noticed. Last but not least, the manual did not mention this anywhere and even searching for "ink effect" gave no results.
anyways, now I know. I also know that this "premium" screen protector from Zagg sucks and every time I use the pen I leave a mark on it. let's hope the one from Spigen is better.
I also figured out #2...by installing Whomposaurus it seems to there, just gotta login and test it.
Lol, sorry, nothing personal, didn't even notice that I was being snarky. And you're right, unnecessary. (i'm on day 28 of not smoking, perhaps I should stay off forums for a while. )
My GF got the Gs3 same time I got my GN2, i've been so enamored with this thing, have not even asked my ladyfriend if I can root her phone, so didn't know that the ink was an option for the gs3...
I've never met a screen protector I liked. Not a one.

Possible New Note II User, couple of questions?

Hi Guys,
Been an HTC guy, all my Android life. Thinking of picking up my first Sammy with the Sprint's version of Note 2. Just had a couple of questions about software and ROMs:
1. Are you guys expecting a Port or Updates from the new S4, coming to the Note 2? If so, when? Or if they've been ported already, can someone point me to the ROM or mods for those?
2. Been familiar with Sense and AOKP/CM10.1 for some time now. Never used TouchWiz. What are most of you driving with here? TouchWiz light and snappy enough with balance of pretty to be used as your Daily Driver, or are you guys AOKP kinda guys here as well? Either way, can you make some ROM recommendations for a new guy? I'd like to experience the Sammy experience, before moving on to AOKP, if possible?
Any other tips you can give me before I switch? I will be switching from an EVO LTE with CarbonROM running on it. Thank you for your time.
It's pretty much a 50/50 when it comes between TouchWiz or AOSP. There is already an s4 system dump.
For Rom recommendations I would suggest if you want TouchWiz stay on stock that's my opinion. And if you want AOSP is suggest CyanogenMod.
PAC rom is good too but for me I love simplicity. So that's why I'm currently on stock right now or CyanogenMod

I was an HTC guy before coming to Sammy. I can say I wasn't all that thrilled with Touchwiz, compared to Sense.
I ended up ditching Touchwiz for Nova Launcher and a couple extra widget paks (HD widgets for clock and Android Pro Widgets for Timeline aka Friendstream and Contact favorites).
I am very happy with this combination.

I was the same at first, but in the long run, I actually Prefer TW to Sense. By miles. Stock TW is (usually, with perhaps a small bit of configuring) faster, and makes more intuitive sense (haha).
AOSP is of course loverly, but TW has a few features w/o totally obscuring Android that I think are ok, even worth it.
Thank you everyone for the response guys!
Just was wondering that I should try out TW for a bit, since I have never used it daily before. The gimmicky features from Sammy on the S4 though... like the Camera app and gestures and eyes thing for scrolling... do you guys think those will be/can be ported to the N2?
Thanks again for everyone's input... getting excited! Just not sure if the N2 will be too much of a phone for me to hold LOL!

I too switched from HTC for 3 years.. And I can say I haven't been happier!!! Tw does take some getting used to after sense, but none the less its every bit as good as sense IMO... If I want a tweaked stock tw ROM, I suggest checking out the lab rats ROM.. Its pretty cartoonish stock, but the updater is chocked full of themes and different apps. Its been an amazing ROM. I used to be a flashaholic til the rats came my way. Not to mention they gotta be the friendliest, goofiest, most entertaining group of devs I've seen yet and as for requests, if its possible its usually pretty quick turnaround and they enjoy all they do probably even more than we do!!! Give it a shot and I can almost bet you will keep coming back to the lab!! Of course this is just my opinion, but there are many more who share it!! As well as, of course, some that don't..

Everyone,
Thank you for your wonderful responses. I just brought home the N2 and it's a MONSTER !!! LOL!
I do want to stay TW for a bit though... so can you guys recommend the most UP TO DATE, and MOST CUSTOMIZEABLE TW ROM with hopefully the LEAST about of bugs and MOST amount of speed? (LOL! I know, talk about Eutopian demands, right !?)
An example of that ^ from the EVO LTE world is Team Venom's ROM...
I will Root though, because I need apps like Titanium Backup to fully set me up on the new device...
Thank you again for all your help! Looking forward to loving the Sammy world !
And oh, for the folks saying that GS4 camera and other features are coming to N2... do you think there will be some features that will NOT work on the N2 for Hardware or Kernel (firmware) issues? Thanks again!

There will be some things that won't work properly due to hardware restrictions, but most everything that doesn't rely on hardware, we should be getting at some point..

Thanks again for the responses guys. Tried my first few ROMs last night... JellyBomb... LabRats... Nice ROMs, but they are too "modded" and touched for my taste...
What ROM can you recommend that's kinda Stock, debloated, keeps the original spirit of Stock at it's heart, with performance enhancements?
Is Synergy a good one?
Also... what's the later build? M7 or something after that? I am forgetting the name right now ...

Hey sparytrainor,
Thank you for your response. Per your recommendation, I tried the Lab Rats ROM, but found a NUMBER of issues with them:
1. I didn't like the annoying PnB Bootanimation, and tried changing it via their built Customization app, but it just booted into Recovery and did nothing ...
2. The kept prompting an update, annoying
3. Flashlight toggle didn't work
Just seemed way too customized to me, without a whole lot of value for those changes.
I am now trying Stock MC2, Rooted and DeOdexed, but I can't seem to boot in. TWRP says, it needs to fix Root permissions at the end of the flash and in both cases (Fix or Not), the phone reboots and sits at the Samsung GN II screen...? Am I missing some firmware requirements here?
When I get that ROM going, I hope to debloat it with TB, and find ways to tweak it a bit, like find a Battery mod or something maybe...?
Thanks again for everyone reading my thread!

OK, in the updater, go into settings and select reboot type and select the recovery u use. This will fix the reboot and install not working.
Also there are fixes in the updater for all the other issue u mentioned with the ROM other than the flashligt , which I use one from the play store anyway..
Check out the updater website for previews of the mods and themes.
http://updater.team-nocturnal.com/labrats/
And as for the other issue, mine says it needs to fix root sometimes as well, but I swipe to fix and everything goes fine. If you didn't update to mc2, u may need to. Here's a link for that as well..

Good luck to u.. Happy flashing and enjoy your new favorite phone!!!

Thank you again, friend, that seems to have worked !
Couple of follow up questions:
1. In the LabRats ROM, if your Swipe to Capture function working?
2. Is there a "safe list" available for the apps I can uninstall to de-bloat?
3. If you run into a faster, less bulky ROM, please share with me , thanks!
Actually that goes for everyone else, as well. Please share your thoughts and inputs if you happen to have some cool ROM recommendations for TW ROMs that are the lightest and the fastest an least buggy !
Thanks guys!
You'd have to search around for a list of what can and can't be removed.. Or u can do like I did and make a backup so if u remove something that breaks the ROM, u can restore ur backup in twrp and be right back where u started..
Swipe to capture has to be turned on in settings. By default it is off.. I used it to take this screenshot for u..
As for a debloated ROM, you might do well with nowiz aosp in development section..can't get much more debloated than that..

Couple of questions bro:
1. What's the eye icon in your screen shot in the notification bar? I never get that...
2. What theme are you using? Link to that theme and other cool ones like it? (I love Red themes )
3. As for the swipe to screen, I've had the right settings enabled, but for the life of me, I cannot get that feature to work ... Even tried it on a friend's stock GS3, nothing. Saw videos on YouTube as well, mimicking the same thing, still no go ... wonder what's up?
As always, much appreciate your kindness and help !
We can help a lot more if you post in our lab rats thread.
I removed about as much as I could without complaints. I personally would remove more, but I wanted to keep the users happy. I would remove s voice, email, calender, Google search, Google now, voice recorder, and voice search. Themes are in the updater and screen shots are on our Web site. All PATB can be removed via the updater.
The eye is smart stay that you must turn on. Flashlight works perfectly fine for everyone else as well as swipe to capture.
Thank you sparytrainor!

Note 2 - a few annoyances (coming from a Nexus)

I only just recently got my Note II and it has got ARHD on it, which I installed because it's a rom based on samsung software with no comptability issues and great battery life.
I also have a Galaxy Nexus and I noticed a few "problems" the Note 2 has and the older Nexus doesn't:
the browser on the Note 2 looks okay but the pointer precision is just very bad. To give an example: if you swipe your finger up or down vertically for a few centimeters, and then you start sliding diagonally (without having lifted off your finger off the screen in the meanwhile), it will only continue to keep scrolling vertically, it won't "follow" your left or right (or diagonal) movement. When you lift off your finger from the screen, retouch it and then scroll diagonal right away it will follow the movement. I find this very annoying, it prevents me of having a smooth browsing experience. My older Nexus with stock android 4.2.2 and stock browser is smooth as butter and follows my swiping movements 1 to 1..
I tested Dolphin browser, Maxthon.. all still bad pointer precision.. Chrome seems to be the least bad of all the browsers, but then on the other hand I find it very choppy.
PS. I already tried an AOSP/CM rom (Sentinel ROM), and there the browser was smooth, yet, non-touchwiz roms are not bugfree and the battery life is nowhere as good as with a samsung based rom.. And especially that last factor is really important to me. (Unless anyone can advise me a bugfree AOSP rom with batterylife that is as good as a samsung based rom).
SOLVED, SOLUTION IN POST #15
Then something else that annoys me quite a bit: when the screen is off and I press the wakebutton, it takes like 1 to 2 seconds until it actually wakes.. I've read I'm not the only one with this problem but I find it kind of unacceptable for a quad core phone with 2GB of ram.. Same problem when you are in an application and you press the homebutton to go to the homescreen, it sometimes takes like a second or more too.. Once again, stuff like that on my simple dual core nexus with half the amount of ram doesn't happen.
UNDERLINED PART SOLVED, SOLUTION IN POST #3 (thanks Kremata)
Then the good stuff has to be said too: homescreen-scrolling is insanely smooth, watching videos is awesome, the camera is great (so is the samsung camera app) and not to forget, the battery life is a revelation to me, I get through the day easily with hardcore use of the phone (that cannot be said of my old Nexus..).
I really like the Note II, but these few problems really crash the party for me.. Also I never thought I'd say it as a Nexus-fan but I generally find Touchwiz pretty cool and suiting on the Note 2.. So I'd prefer to stay on a samsung based rom like ARHD if possible.
Hope there's some experts here who can give me advise on how to handle these little problems.
For the record, I managed installing the AOSP browser, and the bug is still there. So it must be rom/kernel related, not app-related..
The HOME button problem is not a bug. It is because you have set your S-voice to open by double pressing the Home button. So the lag comes from TW waiting for a second press before doing anything.
Just uncheck "Open via the Home Key" in S-voice setting.
For the browser thing I don't know. I never felt it was a problem for me.

One problem solved already, thanks for that!
I placed a video of the pointing precision problem on youtube. Btw I checked if the touchscreen is ok by using "show touches", and it followed my touches 100% perfectly, so it's not the phone, it's definitely some software problem..
This is the video
Could anyone with a samsung-based rom try to reproduce the above problem and see if it happens or not ? If not, could you tell me what rom + kernel you are using, would be much appreciated..
I repeat that when I tried an AOSP rom on my Note II, this issue did not happen.
I'm on DLL4 and before this was on 4.1.1 and do not have this issue.

Could you give me more information on DLL4 ? Maybe a link to such rom, etc. How is your battery life ?
PS. I have the international (european) version.

I have the exact same thing on my phone (ARHDv18). A work around is to start with a diagonal instead of a vertical line then it works fine

Thanks, I'll sleep a bit better now tonight
Yes I know.. but it's very annoying.. Since years I used stock android/AOSP, now I went to the dark side P) to use a TW device, so this "problem" kind of annoys me.. I wonder if one of our awesome developers would be able to make a samsung based TW rom with an AOSP-like smooth browsing experience..

I just realized this problem. I'm using Crash ROM, and sometimes it will happen like in the video, but sometimes it work perfectly.
So weird that I seem to be the first one remarking this problem as imo it's quite annoying, and I'm definitely not alone here.

You must be more picky than most of us as I never noticed this before either.
