[How to] Enable on screen buttons - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

Samsung should have made the capacitive buttons work with the s pen. I have a few times tried hitting them with the pen only to feel like a idiot.
I am not 100% on where I found this, but with a easy build.prop edit you can enable the on screen buttons so that you can use the s pen.
I'm not responsible for what happens and all the usual disclaimers, and have a back up.
Using a root explorer app, go to system and long press on build.prop to select text editor.
At the bottom, add (without quotes) this line:
"qemu.hw.mainkeys=0"
And to turn them off, change it to:
"qemu.hw.mainkeys=1"
Or simply delete what you orginally added.
Enjoy!

I added this line to my build.prop, rebooted, and it didn't work. I'm not new to editing build.prop, the line is without quotes, and I double checked the syntax. I'm using Nova, but I presume that should not matter. Any ideas? Thanks for sharing this...

I'm sorry I made a typo, it should be:

I was about to post the same, after seeing entries from the rest of the file. It worked! Thank you. Coming from AOKP, this is a great addition.
I do notice that the menu button is missing when the home screen is showing. Any way to get that back? My plan is to turn off the hardware buttons altogether. Cheers.

I notice it was there when it wanted to be, I'm not sure what triggers it. It wasn't always the on my epic touch either. I will see if I can ask around.

The quick answer for the menu soft key is Google disabled it. Apps should have a menu button in the UI, and when it doesn't is when it shows in the soft keys.
It can be made where it is always there, but it takes a ton of coding and would require it to be done for each themed ROM. I might mess with it one day, but it doesn't seem worthwhile as it knows when to enable the menu soft key.
Sorry, but if I do it, it would be for my own ROM. It's hard enough to have time to work on that, let alone touch others to enable something that many wouldn't use
sent from my awesomely huge Note II

This isn't necessary
Just draw a "^" or a "<" anywhere on th screen (pressing the spen button) and it will either bring the menu or take you back, just as the capacitive buttons. Its explained on the spen help section on the settings.

When going into landscape the buttons are useless. Any way to fix this

I could resize it so the icons are smaller, but again that requires a framework edit. I would have to do it for every themed rom, or I need a morph zip. If someone knew how to make a morph zip, that would be the easiest way.

REQ- JB Remove Nav Bar

I found that the extra screen size that can be saved by removing the nav bar and using an app such as LMT to navigate, really got me used to having more screen real-estate.
I was wondering if any of you guys have had any luck in figuring this out with jellybean?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Yes, same here. I m so used to lmt and the extra screen size, can't wait for a mod in jb

I don't use this mod but there's a line to add to your build.prop that removes it.
qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
This tells android that your phone has hardware keys and disables the soft keys.

You can use Trigger to switch tasks.
Very very simple.
I made a short demonstration video of how to use Trigger to change tasks. Quality's not too good because I'm still not used to using Screencast yet.
You can use Trigger without gestures and that's by setting the dragging up, left, right, down directions to be the actions you want to activate. I've set the left action to be switch to previous task and the up action to be show Recent Apps.
And for a limited time, you can download Trigger from the Samsung Apps Store to get the full version that lets you make an unlimited amount of gestures.
Otherwise, you could download the free version of Trigger from the Play Store to try out.
Edit: If you want to move the Trigger Icon, you'll have to hold onto the icon for a second or so. If you don't hold, it'll activate the swiping actions instead.

Searching for Trigger Varience should have better results.
Also, in my original post, if you click the word Play Store, it'll link you directly to the app.

How to easily force navigation bar

Real simple
Change your DPI to 213, or what ever you want. I'm at 280. I get the nav bar, status bar stays at top. I prefer a home soft key.that bottom is different.
Add these 2 lines to the bottom of your build prop
Save and exit
Reboot

SPen command gestures.

I absolutely love my SPen and would really be lost without it. But for those of you who are not following the other thread about this subject it has been learned that there are some gestures you can do while holding down the SPen button. So while holding down the button and drawing a line up the left side it will bring up a search command prompt to search within the app you are currently using. Also if you hold it down and draw a ^ it will bring up the Menu. And if you draw a < it will go back just like the back button. Some of you may have already known this but I didn't and thought I would let everyone know what has been found. All credit for this find goes to budde2 because he is the one who told me about this.

Or off you don't feel like making your own this app is actually pretty effin sweet ...I use the one made for touch not the spen but it definitely gives you alot more features than using the native quick commands option too...not sure off there's a lite version for this but there is one for the touch version.

I've actually been hitting the home button with it very easily. They probably thought we didn't need a gesture for that reason.

I thought about that but the tip "gives" a little and I didn't want to mess up the tip.
I guess there is no around having to actually use my finger!

You don't really need to press it that hard. I do it all the time.

[Q]Why does home button pull up task manager when waking it

I know I can't be the only one here. This is driving me crazy. Please help. My phone was rooted stock..then I unrooted and took all the updates to get current. Now ALMOST every time I wake up my phone with the home button, it brings up the task manager. It never did this since I've had my phone on launch day. Is it something in the update? Can I turn something off? I've scoured the net for this answer and can't seem to get it. I appreciate the help.
I can't offer any help, other than to confirm you aren't crazy! Mine has been doing the same thing ever since the update. Drives me nuts. There are many times when it's easier to turn on my pone with the home button. Very annoying...

And this update has also brought the "didn't catch that. Try speaking again" at least once a day, when I'm speaking a text. I've never seen that before either. Awful.

I also am experiencing this. I've just started using the actual power button instead.

Not experiencing this issue here. AT&T Stock (stupidly updated from rooted stock to stock 4.1.2).
I've always used the power key though. Been pushing the home key ever since I read this thread (about an hour ago lol)
More info guys.
What lockscreen methods are you all using? Do you have the preview motion on? S-Pen settings? Voice command wake up settings?
swipe or No lock for me. When I did have swipe, I just had the clock & user banner. no preview motion. S-Pen sensor is off until removed. No voice command wake up.
Am I going in the right direction here?
It's an issue with the latest sprint update. I'm sure it wouldn't effect you since your on att.
Either way, I use no lock.

This is driving me nuts on my T-Mobile Note 2, 4.1.2 OS. I spent a lot of time trying to troubleshoot this issue thinking i installed a misbaving app. I'm using the factory T-Mobile 4.1.2 upgrade ROM that's been rooted. Its hard to believe this wasn't tested before releasing this to thousands of people. Is there a way to at least manually fix this? I really need to be able to have a dependable home button on my Note 2.
I use lmt for pie controls, remap my home button to power instead, and my power button is now my camera shutter.. I missed my camera button on my evo lte, but that about sums up what I miss about it.. Anyway, this way the home button doesn't bring up recent apps, access it from pie control..

You should make a how to thread, I'm sure many others like myself wouldn't have thought to do that. Having a camera button would be nice!
