[Q] Wallpaper Sharpness - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Not sure if anyone has noticed this, but I loaded several 720 x 1280 images onto my phone and set them as wallpapers on my home screen. I noticed that the image is not as sharp as when I view them in the gallery. I made sure it's not zoomed or anything, just that certain details in the picture are not as sharp until I click on the gallery app and view it in the gallery. Anyone notice this? or am I just being too nit-picky?

I was about to post the same thing. Not just the wallpaper, the icons are not sharp too. Somebody suggested to use a custom launcher but i like TW launcher

Yeah, I'm already using Nova Launcher, and still having same problem ... anyone can help us with this?

Lol, the default system for setting wallpaper in Android is crap. It decreases quality drastically.
And Nova has wallpaper cropping issue, so it will be more worse than TW.
Solution: Use Wallpaper Wizardii to set wallpapers.

Cheers for the advice on the app mate working great

I had the same issue with my Motorola Xoom. I used the app 'Multi picture live wallpaper' which solved my problem. I imagine I'll be using the same app when I get my phone tomorrow.

Resolution/dimensions of sliding wallpapper?

Hello,
What is the resolution/dimensions of sliding wallpapper? ( similar to default wallpapper that you find on a new Galaxy s) because I want to make custom sliding wallpappers.
And what is the extension/type of the picture? and in which folder I should put it?
And What I should do different if I want to do non-sliding (Fixed) wallpapper.
Thank you.
would also like to know this?

I made a custom one meyself last night and it's a million times better than using the crop tool in Gallery.
For a none slide use launcherpro, it has a setting that stops the wallpaper slide if you want that, its in the preferences/appearance settings.
Thanks for the info, I would rather a non-sliding wallpaper.
Is there no way to make it a different picture for each of the 7 screens?

I thought of making a Live Wallpaper that did this (or just displayed a static image that didn't scroll) and fiddled with the SDK last night. Only problem is I suck at Java. If I could use Visual Basic I could have done it in about 10 minutes.
Maybe someone more competent at Android developing could take this idea and make it a reality.

Thanks everyone, but I tried 960 X 800 and used Gallary to set it like sliding wallpapper but it forced me to chose a part from the picture and I could not chose the whole picture.

I have searched and searched for a solution but my best find was this app:
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-creativecore-wallpaperplus-jmit.aspx
haven't tried it yet.
i think it will not work with touchwiz, but might work with launcher pro

Thank you.
I found out that my mistake was making the longer dimension vertical while it should be horizontal. So the rotation of the picture for 90 degrees gave me the ability to select the whole picture as sliding wallpaper.
But what if I want to make non-sliding wallpaper that fit to the screen completely, what is the resolution for that?
um isn't it 480 by 800?
Because of the moving of the image when sliding to different homescreens it needs to be slightly wider, hence the 960x800 resolution.
slightly? thats twice the width lol
what file type do you think would be better?

480x800 is the actual resolution of the screen, while the sliding wallpaper is doubling the width so that the wallpaper won't stretch and display the at native resolution when you slide through the home screens.
When you got some image with high resolution (higher than 960x800), selecting that high resolution image and crop to fit by the wallpaper selector, it will corp and resize the image for you on the fly but it doesn't look sharp as those TouchWiz and Launcher Pro wallpaper which is resized and optimized the sharpness on 960x800, I'm going to crop and resize my favorie wallpaper on a desktop imaging tool.

I've made a couple of backgrounds in ps that were 960x800 resolution and then put them on my phone. Whenever I got to change the wallpaper, it has me select the file and then I have to crop the image. I'm aware that I can drag it out to make the crop zone large but it still only selects I would say 3/5 of the image. I've tried several different times over several different images and I cannot make it any larger. I'm using launcher pro if this has anything to do with it. Are you sure the resolution is 960 wide by 800 tall? Other than that, what am I doing wrong?
Would deleting all but 1 home screen make the wallpaper full-size/non-sliding?

It's what I use and is fine for both stock and launcher pro. When I chose the wallpaper the crop rectangle stretched to the wallpaper perfectly.
Hi. I tried 1280 x 1280 whoch I convert using samsung kies and the crop box fits 100 % and the wallpaper is perfect.
Hope this helps.

Non moving fixed wallpaper :)

hi guys ... yes i just found a way how you can have a fixed wallpaper as a background
there is a live wallpaper by the name of droid x live paper or something it has an droid eye .. now here when u apply that in the settings u have to select the desired background.. lightning type- none, choose eye - none.. show particles- un tick this... and you are good to go.. now you have a wallpaper that wont move when you move the screens ... and if you know how to edit images.. make an image with the size 960 x 800.. but it will only show the first half ie 480x800 so keep ur image on the first half of the image..... i have attached a few wallpapers which i created may be you can understand what i m saying by looking at it... and i have also attached the apk file of the live wallpaper( this apk is not the full version, u can buy it from the market if u like it)
(the whole credit goes to the maker of this live wallpaper)
does anyone has a better idea than this to have a fixed wallpaper like in other mobile phones ?????
Tried this and got it to work half way, I made a 960x800 canvas and just placed a 480x800 on the left portion upon applying it using the livewallpaper the image quality is degraded seems like the phone is doing something to it.
I ended up making a 960x800 canvas and a blank space of 249 pixels to keep my image centered.
I cant believe why it such a trivial thing to do on andriod/touchwiz... also why hasnt any dev made an effort for a non sliding and really good scaling/cropping wallpaper app ?
I think TW Launcher is your problem. I'm using LauncherPro and its just a tick box to stop the wallpaper moving
I know some others also choose to use ADW Launcher instead of TW and that probably also has that tick box. Maybe that's why the devs haven't bothered?
I would suggest trying one of the above alternative home screen launchers, they add lots more options and can be used for free. If you don't like either just remove them and return to TW
I think you can have a non moving wallpaper using multi picture wallpaper app (please google for the app, I am unable to paste links) by setting the same picture for all screens and setting an appropriate transition method.
Cheers.

This one is golden its very very close to perfect!!! All it needs is just a better cropping quality on some pictures!
This one is very good, but lacks of quality when doing the downsize:
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-galmoori-wallpapereditor-FzCp.aspx
And this one is usable, but unlike the below one you have to provide your own jpg at the correct size (480x800) instead of choose and crop your image from your gallery. Some error when rotating the screen though:
http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-promevo-wallpaper-mywallpaper-BixF.aspx
In my opinion, the first solution will be the best IF the author update the application in order to fix the downsize quality.
Or you can make your own live wallpaper. There are scripts but i think they are difficult for the low user. We just want to choose a picture, crop it and use it, don't we?
Greetings

Im thinking of looking for the best resize batch for my wallpapers, I currently have about 2,400 in rotation and I need to batch resize em xD
I use Sense on a Desire Z (HTC G2) and i bought an app called WallpaperPlus, which allows to select single or multiple pictures with the size of the screen.
The problem is the quality loss is important when cropping images.
After i apply a single fixed wallpaper with this app (bad quality when from a highres pic), then i use the default wallpaper picked (from Sense) and Tada! the crop zone is no more 960*800 (horizontal) but 480*800 (vertical) with a lot better quality (quite perfect!)
The only problem is when i reboot, i have to redo this because somehow the wallpaper goes back to 960*600, an zooms in the center of the 480*800 walpaper previously set.
Just to say that it must not be difficult to change the crop zone form factor, since this app does it somehow. When i have spare time i will look further into this.

Cropping pictures to set wallpaper

So today I came across a interesting problem.
I took a screen shot of my screen using the power+volume down combo.
I wanted to set that picture as my wallpaper but the gallery app would not allow me to crop the full size photo. It only covers about 1/3 of the photo.
How is this happening if I took the photo from the phone, which is the exact same screen size? Is this an issue with the gallery app?
I'm running cm9 kang w/ Franco kernel.
So could this be a trebuchet issue?
Please help and thanks in advanced

If you want to be able to use the entire picture as your Wallpaper it should be cropped/resized to 1440x1280, or any other size with exactly the same aspect ratio.
Edit: My apologies, i misread screenshot as camera shot. The rest applies though. Basically you have a 720x1280 image that needs to be 1440x1280 to set it as a Wallpaper. You can do this using Multipicture Live Wallpaper from the Market:

The wallpaper resolution is 2x the screen width by the screen height -- that is, 1440 x 1280. If you notice, when scrolling on your homescreen, the wallpaper moves. Hence, the wallpaper is larger than the screen size, so a screenshot isn't going to fit the required wallpaper aspect ratio.

[Q] set wallpaper without cropping the image

Is there any way to set up a full image as a wallpaper?
What I mean is, every time I set up a wallpaper I have to go to the "cropping" (the little green square used to select the part of the image desired) process so that the image will fit the resolution.
I wanna know if there is a way to use a full photo like if it was a default wallpaper without cropping it.
I hope this makes sense. Thanks for the support.
Im afraid not You would have better luck with a custom launcher or maybe editing the image on PC/MAC first.

Use Wallpaper Wizardrii..find it on Google Play and thank me later..
Quickpic from Play store works very well for me...
Open the desired image in Gallery, open the image normally via gallery app, click anywhere on image, and select the option in more to set as Quickpic wallpaper....

As long as your wallpaper is the correct size (1440 x 1280) you should be just fine.

i read that you have to use a photo editor and make the picture 1440x1280 in size im gonna try it out my self and let you know
just took a picture from a backgroud of a rom the size in that is 960x854
To take into account the scrolling wallpaper, you need the following size wallpapers:
One X: 1440 x 1280 - HD
Atrix: 1080 x 960 qHD
Desire: 960 x 800 or 960 x 854 WVGA
Thank you for that info. Very useful.

When i am changing my wallpaper trough Personalize/wallpaper/HTC Wallpapers then it puts the image as a wallpaper without cropping it. But when i want to choose an image from the gallery ( 1440x1280 ) then it asks me to crop it. And when i try to set the same image that was not cropped previously, directly from the gallery, it asks me to crop it . I was wondering if there was a way around this without using other apps to do it.

If you expand the box out all the way, it should give you the WHOLE wallpaper over the screens. It's just asking if you want to choose part or all of the picture.

I thought the same actually, but i tried with the stock wallpaper, the one that was on the phone when i got it, and when it crops it. Not a big deal because there are apps that can be used to go around it. It's just weird that we are not able to have the same picture full size as a wallpaper trough the gallery.
Wallpaper Set & Save free in Google Play Store is a good one. I've been using it for years, ever since the old versions of sense where the quality of the image used to be badly reduced if you set the wallpaper and cropped it through the phone's settings. WSS retains the full image quality and doesn't crop.
Really useful. Thanks!

What happened to crop wallpaper in KitKat? Now it is impossible to center a wallpaper when setting it? Why did Google change this?

Yes, but it is impossible to center an image. Try setting something symmetrical, see how difficult it is to get it perfectly centered on your home page.
I agree but I don't find it that big of a deal. But yeah they removed the ruler/grid lines.
Better like that... Download a hd picture and set it.
No forced zooming like before...
