[Q] I Don't Want to Pay for a DATA PLAN! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

So check this out.... I am an AT&T user and back when the HTC HD2 came out for T-Mobile I bought it from a friend when they signed up for a new contract. Got an unlock code from Ebay and have been using it for the past 2 years without having to have a data plan, never got added automatically to my plan like i have heard happen to others? And I'm wondering why? Is it possibly cuz its a T-Mobile phone? Or is it cuz I still have an old "Cingular" SIM card? I am curious about this because right now, Wally World has a special sale on the phone at $249, plus a $100 gift card, which will bring the phone down to $150 basically, so a pretty damn good deal for a phone just out on the market. And I'm plan on getting it this week, I was wondering if any of you would be able to tell me if at some point if i was able to get a T-Mobile version of the Samsung Note 2 if i could slip my SIM card into it and then be able to cancel my DATA plan, if i told them i went back to a Motorola Razr or something, which worked when i got my HD2? Or will AT&T be able to see that i have a smartphone? Is it the newer smaller SIM card, that will tell AT&T that I have a smartphone, or will the phone it self be what sends info to the servers or whatever that tells AT&T I have a smartphone? Or do you think this method of getting a T-Mobile phone and using an AT&T SIM card will work and I won't get stuck with a DATA plan? Everywhere I go has Wi-Fi so I have no need for the Data plan it will be going to waste.

That offer of 249 is only for new contracts and upgrades

Yep, I am eligible for an upgrade, haven't upgraded in a few years or so... Just wondering if the new micro sim cards or the newer phone will alert at&t that i am using a smart phone, or if i will be able to do the same thing i did last time, by getting a tmobile phone with at&t service and not be required to have a data plan, if they don't know that i'm using a smart phone...?

so you are going to start a tmobile contract to get the discounted price on the phone then switch back to att

So, you've been stealing data for 2 years now... Making my data cost go up. Stealing is a crime! Please turn yourself in and agree to pay back the last 2 years of stolen data....
I'm messing with you.
If you bring a phone to T-Mobile, they won't force a data plan on you. I'm assuming The Dark Side [AT&T] is the same.

If you use an upgrade, a 2GB Data Plan is required, and they will not let you remove your data afterwards. T-Mobile is weird like that.

LOL, nice, but no, I'm saying I don't have any internet on my phone, only had the Wi-Fi, therefore wasn't having to pay for a data plan, because i wasn't required to have one since they didn't know i had a smart phone, just the regular cost of having a calling plan... I'm hoping it's something to do with the IMEI, if it isn't in the system, hopefully they won't know what phone i'm using...

Yeah AT&T requires you to have an added Data Plan also with any smartphone, but I don't need it, its a waste of money for me, I have Wi-Fi most of the places I go, and don't need to be connected to the net 24/7 ...lol But, I'm hoping I can get a Tmobile Note 2 and use it for a while, then tell them I went back to my Razr and hopefully be able to drop the data part of the plan, but i don't know if i could do that until the new contract is over

No, originally it was just an impulse buy, cuz its such a kick ass phone...lol I would prefer just to buy a Tmobile version somewhere and use it on AT&T and hopefully not be required to have a data plan, but since the phone is so new, i'm probably not going to find one anywhere, less than $400 even on Ebay. So what I was thinking is, just upgrade my current AT&T plan to a new 2 year agreement, and get the phone for $250, plus the $100 gift card from Wally World, and that basically brings the price down to $150, and then possibly selling or trading the phone and getting a Tmobile version, so i can cancel the internet data plan. But, i'm not sure i could do that, i don't know if the contract terms say I'm required to keep the data part, even if i don't have a smartphone anymore say after a few months or year or so. Like for example, if I sign a new 2 year agreement, and after a couple of months, tell them I went back to a Razr phone, if i can drop the data, but i'm still on the 2 year agreement. And hopefully the Tmobile version phone won't be able to be detected so i'm not automatically enrolled into the data plan again....?

I don't get it. If you just want a feature phone then just get an feature phone. There are tablets that uses WiFi only just bigger. Then you can get a free basic phone for texting and calls only. Or get a feature phone for almost free for text, calling, and listening to your music. At this point PPCs (Pocket Personal Computers) aka "Smartphones", like Galaxy Note 2, are way too much for the purposes that you are wanting to use them for.
To make PPC aka "smartphones" truly mobile they need to be connected to the Internet at all times. That is why cellular data radio services is so important for these PPC devices. They are truly cellular mobile computers. That is why I coined them as CPPC (Cellular Pocket Personal Computer) and MPPC (Mobile Pocket Personal Computer).
MPPC (Mobile Pocket Personal Computer) is the best description of what these devices are. They are mobile in terms that you are always connected on the go with these devices. They fit in your pocket (at least your big pocket). They are very personal in the way you use them. And they are truly computers. They are your personalized pocket sized (big pockets) computers on the go with cellular radio and communication services. They are your MPPC (Mobile Pocket Personal Computer.
Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is not for you at all. You are just wasting money on the Galaxy Note 2. Get either a basic phone or feature phone as your phone device. And get a tablet as your WiFi media device. You can get both for less than or close to the cost of a Galaxy Note 2.

I'm not trying to buy the Galaxy Note 2 outright, I plan on going to Walmart sometime this week and upgrading my contract and getting the Note 2 for $249, and then on top of that Walmart will throw in a $100 gift card, that you can use on anything at the store, probably even gas at the Murphy USA station so basically, that brings the price of the phone down to $150.... I don't know of any decent tablet anywhere near that price. This phone is basically a phone and tablet all in one, I don't want to be carrying multiple devices around with me, a big 7" or 10" tablet everywhere I go everyday, plus my cell phone. I'm looking for an all in once device, and this is pretty much it. Most of the places I go have Wi-Fi, so I wouldn't, (and haven't), even hardly use(d) any data. And the extra, $15, $20 or $30 a month for a data plan could be used to help pay for other bills. I can still use the phone to its full potential without having a data plan... Except when I'm driving down the highway and I'm lost and need GPS? ...lol But, I still have my HD2 with tomtom on it, or eventually I might sell it and get a dedicated GPS, or use google navigation, I think I heard they have an option to download offline maps. If I'm bored waiting on my oil to get changed in my car somewhere, and want to watch a YouTube video, sure I'll be SOL if they don't have a public Wi-Fi, but I'll have plenty of apps and games to keep me entertained while I wait...lol IF I ever have an absolute need to use, mobile data, its a pay-per-use feature, per MB I think so I'll still have that, it just won't be a set monthly price.

Att requires you to keep a data plan for 6 months after an upgrade.
Here is what I would do:
If you upgrade then switch to the t-mo version, call att when you switch and tell them you are using a t mobile dumb phone and want your data removed. They may do it if its been 6 months since your upgrade. If they wont remove data completely, tell them you want the $10 media net package. It is unlimited and you will get hspa+ if your phone allows for it. That way you have data if you ever need it, and its cheap.
I used the $10 plan with my gsm razr, but switched back to unlimited so I wouldnt lose it. I know the $10 plan works for phones not in att's system.
Hope this helps

Exactly, thanks for the info, helps a lot. That is exactly what I planned to do, just wasn't for sure on how long I would have to keep the mobile data plan. So $150, plus $15 a month for the minimum plan, for 6 months = $240 total, phone and mobile data.... not too bad...

Nexus 7 Tablet!!! Check it out.
To use Google Maps you will need Internet connection so that the device can download the maps while you are traveling. Yes you can do that off line. But the Google Maps function the best when you are connected. Just a good example of so many things within these devices that Must be connected at all times for.
Why not check out lower end Android devices or feature phones with these features? They will cost you even less. Much less.
Again, Galaxy Note 2 is way too much of a professional device than what you are look for. So much of Galaxy Note 2 will be wasted. And the complexity of Galaxy Note 2 is not going to make you happy in the long run.
Warning - Galaxy Note 2 WILL use your cellular data rather you want it to or not. Again, this is the nature of these devices. Everything from email, system backing up, your contacts gets checked and backup, any social apps WILL use your data in the background, Google PlayStore in check for updates, Google Maps in getting new maps (as you travel) and adding location accuracy (with cellular towers), Google Street View in downloading the street view for you, Calendar will check Google and update, free apps that have ads will download the ads, some apps will be running in the background checking stuff online and downloading from online, and so much more WILL be using your Cellular data throughout the day and night on everyday.
When it comes to free apps you can buy the paid ad-free apps. But by the time you do that with all apps you will end up spending as much as it would if you just get the $30.00 per month unlimited data plan. I know that because I hate ads so much that I spend money for the paid ad-free apps.
At the end you better off either going for the $30.00 unlimited data plan or go for a feature phone that does what you want it to. With what you want to do with the device you are better off with a feature phone.
But if you do go for Galaxy Note 2 go for the Unlimited data plan and try to learn the features of this device. Hopefully you will learn to love or at least like the features enough that you would never again think of not having data plan with the device. But my fear for you is that the experience in trying not to use data service is going to be a very bad experience for you. But at least you were forewarned.

You can remove the data plan at anytime if you buy it from AT&T, not sure about other places.
There is a few problems with your plan. T-mobile version of the note 2 is worth more in the used market than AT&T version, so you may find it hard to do an even exchange.
Secondly AT&T do sweeps to detect smartphones more regularly now. It may be able to detect the Tmobile version of note 2 very soon.

Even if you can take out the data plan, your usage with Galaxy Note 2 would be hampered in a huge way. So huge that it is not worth removing the data plan or getting the Galaxy Note 2. I gave examples in a post above of some of stuff that uses the cellular data. Those and much more would be hampered by taking cellular data plan out. Again, not worth it. There are feature phones that would do what that user wants without hampering the usage.
You see that Droid X on my signature? That is not on the grid anymore. And I can tell you that I notice how much the device and I am hampered by not having data plan. It sucks in a huge way. I am talking with experience.
Android PPC aka "Smartphones" is at its best if on the grid all the way, including cellular data plan. Otherwise go for a feature phone.

Sorry.
We are both trying to tell the OP what to expect in his situation.

I know it's a little bit of an inconvenience not having mobile data, but I have been using a T-Mobile HTC HD2 for the last 2 years without a mobile data plan, just fine. If there is something I need to do that requires internet, i'm patient enough to wait until I can get on Wi-Fi, make a reminder in the calender for when I have time and problem solved. I still have Windows 6.5, which kinda sucks, on it. And I also have Android ported onto it using the memory card. So if I'm traveling somewhere I restart the phone and boot into Windows and use my TomTom GPS program. Then after, I boot back into Android and in the settings there is a checkbox that I can check to keep my phone from using a mobile data connection, so I've been doing just fine. And the GN2 will be a step up from this phone and not that much money out of my wallet.

I actually already bought the GN2 on black friday, from at&t as a contract upgrade, it was kind of an impulse buy, i'm a penny pincher... I know, kinda weird when we are talking about a $700 phone, right? ...LOL But, I try to save money where I can. I took it back on Tuesday night, because a co-worker told me about the deal at walmart. So I'm gonna go get it from them. From Saturday to Tuesday I was streaming football and basketball games for a few hours everyday, over wi-fi, just fine. I checked my data usage on the phone with the included apps and I was barely even using anything, it was only a few MB's or so, that is probably when I was playing around with it before I connected it to my home and work Wi-Fi, 4G at my work was extremely slow, so I connected to Wi-Fi and was much faster, and I was thinking to myself, if 4g is that damn slow, i don't need to be throwing money away at it... Me and another co-worker that works in my same department were wondering how fast the mobile data is so, I was trying to go to speedtest.net to test the speed and it would never even completely load the page up. I didn't even try the wi-fi speedtest at work, because i was ready to clock out and go home... I did the speedtest at my home from wi-fi and on 4g and my wi-fi kicked the **** out of the 4g, the 4g didn't even get over 1MB! I don't need to have my apps all connected to mobile data all the time, I've used facebook, ebay, craigslist, google play store, checked email and the apps that have the ads don't really bother me, not that big of a deal to me. Sometimes they are annoying, but for me I'd rather see the ad then racking up money by buying all the paid apps. I might buy a few apps that I really like but probably not very many, who knows.. ...And on a sidenote, i don't see a $30 unlimited data plan anywhere, is that a T-Mobile or AT&T plan?

Will the Tmobile touch pro 2 require a data plan?

I made this thread a long time ago but now that its coming out to tmobile soon and there is more information about it there are likely to be more reasons for people to think it will or will not require a data plan.
According to this http://www.tmonews.com/2009/05/small-changes-to-datamessaging-plans/ it will...but we really won't know until it is released.
Don't buy it from tmobile. You should be able to use tzones with touch pro2 if purchased from ebay/craigslist.
I'm making a guess here that you are thinking of using wifi for data purposes? Unless you are careful to turn off all data you will suck up a months cost in data in less than a day. Possibly more. I had my data turned off while I was in between phones using my backup for a few weeks. When the NAM unlocked diamond became available I purchased it at about 7pm. I spaced the data and turned it on at 10am the next morning. I did little other than fiddle with the phone for an hour or so in the evening while it was charging and then an hour or so in the morning before I called in to get my data back up. That was 47 bucks and all I did was open opera to scope it out, set up my email and exchanged a few, set up the weather, about it. Didn't dl any videos or anything of that nature. I'm guessing that tmo or AT&T (should they pick it up) will require a data plan and of course you can do what you want if you buy unlocked. Realistically I think while data may not required its not a bad idea.

But the thing is that no WM phone has ever needed a data plan before, and also wm phones cost a lot more than other phones that do require data plans like the G1,or iphone, and would be very disapointed if it requires a data plan because I don't really have a use for one espcially cause I have wifi around me almost all day.
99.9% of phone companies will not activate without a smartphone plan.
Which a data plan is part of the smartphone plan.
So unless you're with one of those 0.1% of companies that do not require it themselves,
then you will need a data plan.
It is not the phone, it is the company.

Are you talking about in the future? cause so far I don't think any wm phones have required data plans, so does that mean the touch pro 2 will be in the 0.1%? I really hope it is
Things are definitely trending towards requiring data plans for data-centric phones. The companies claim they don't want consumers to be accidentally caught in massive per-kb charges or to miss out on the phone's functionality, but the real reason is precisely what the OP is planning to do--just use wifi. I'm hoping for that option as well. That's precisely the reason that carriers were so reluctant to allow wifi on phones in the first place. Plenty of manufacturers were willing to put it in years ago--pre-iPhone, but the carriers didn't want people using wifi to avoid their data plans.
Although the common wisdom on many forums seems to be that going without a data plan for phones like this doesn't make any sense, the common wisdom is, as you'd expect wrong. Or at least wrong for some people. Plenty of people have wifi at home, work, school and most of the places they hang out, and also have a data-use pattern that doesn't require 24/7 data access.
Carriers subsidize the phones, and then make their money back on monthly contract plans. It's only very recently that viable and broadly appealing pay as you go plans have been worth looking at. Anyway, now that data is so much more pervasive, it's becoming part of how Carriers decide on how much to subsidize a phone. They can either figure what percentage of people will get data, and calculate the subsidy from that, or they can require data and not mess with figuring percentages.
WinMo is a great platform to go data-less, because you can alter the winmo registry using a program like NoData, and actually turn off the carrier data radios, to ensure that there's no data access happening in the background running up per-kb charges.
Personally, I'm looking at TP2 with ATT, and I haven't yet heard whether they have plans to require data or not. Or whether any such requirement is attached to the phone itself, or just the 2-year contract price.

EXACTLY!!! Its just another way of them to get money out of customers, if somebody really needed a data plan they could just get one themselves. But I think its likely that this phone wont need one cause no wm phone has ever needed one, so it probably won't, but I just wanted to know other people's opinions on this cause its not like its impossible.
^I'm not aware if any Tmob store requireing data plans where I live...hopefully they won't in the future.
Sprint just tweeted about the Pre: The Pre requires an Everything Data plan - SERO plans will need upgrade to Everything Plus plan or other Everything Data (450/900/S.E.).
So I'm guessing there is a good chance they will make the same bonehead move for the TP2. This will probably affect my ability to upgrade.

It's possible, but don't forget the Pre is not just a Sprint exclusive, it's one of the most talked about Sprint exclusives that I can remember. They're putting a lot more effort into that phone than they will for the multi-carrier TP2, as such, they might be expecting to get more out of each sale.

That's a good point about the exclusivity. I hadn't considered that. Well, we'll just have to wait and see. I don't expect to see TP2 from Sprint before November in any case, so there's lot's of time I want to NOT spending worrying about it

One other thing that does make me think that this phone will not require a data plan is that the G1 for example, cost 180 with a new contract, but requires a data plan, and then phones like the fuze, are over 300 with a data plan and doesn't require a data plan, maybe that is part of the benefit of getting a pricier phone, no data plan required, kinda like if a printer sells for cheap usually the ink is expensive, and if the printer cost more it's probably priced more reasonably. so even though a lot of phones do require a data plan maybe the reason wm phones don't is cause they cost so much more.
i want to get the TP2 on the verizon network.. does anyone know if they are going to charge for a data plan??? iv never had a winmo phone b4.

LOL...Verizon is just getting set to come out with the original TP. I wouldn't look for the 2nd gen version of it from them for at least a year.
Then again, I'm the guy who said Sprint wouldn't come out with it before November, so you know how far you can take my word on things!

I don't recall the article being very clear about one of them being Verizon, just mentioned as a possibility.
I heard that the touch pro 2 will require a data plan and I was wondering if anyone knows if there will be a way around it, or if an unlocked version will also require a data plan?
It is supposed to come out in about a week or so so i was wondering if anyone had more information about this

Do you use your phone without data plan like me? If so WP7 isn't for us =(

neither are iPhones, Droids, etc.
in my particular situation, i have wifi everywhere i go. there's no need to have constant always on 3g/4g connection at all.
i have a hermes right now and i do fine w/o data. but i do luv the offline functionality and features of a 'laptop-like' phone.
are you like me? if so, the future of smart phones is requiring that you be online all the time!
how will you cope in a world like that? will iPhone work w/o data plan? will droid? will WP7 phone?
No, I'm not a regressive, sorry.
Just get a data plan.
That simple.
(actually, Android is usable without a data plan, I bought my girlfriend a cheap Android phone and she uses it without one)
Well I've always had a data plan so this won't be an issue for me. Usually if you buy phones outright and not on contract you don't have to get data plans. Of course I don't know if it will work or not.
Im always without Data plan!!! At home I got WIFI and I dont need the net anywhere else - just turn on ifi update weather forecasts and emails and thats about it!
But it would be a shame if we could not use WP7 without constant internet connection...
my brother used his iphone without a data plan and it still works really well. he turned on wifi and when he entered somewhere with wifi (home etc) it would connect and update automatically, it did not try to connect with data at any point when he was not in a area with wifi. also it did not seem to effect the battery much, i guess they have a sleep mode or something on the wifi.
I guess wp7 will work the same. but not a problem for me as i have unlimited data.

I'd question that actually. In my admittedly limited, but recent (2.1) experience of Android, it's heavily tied into Google services, and hence, data. I couldn't even launch the Calendar without being prompted for a Google account, let alone run a local-only Calendar, or connect to an Exchange calendar.
It will be possible to run WP7 without dataplan, just as it is possible to do so with Android. But I'd certainly suggest it's far from premium-experience.
You log in to your Google account once via WiFi, and that's it.
From then on, you can use the phone entirely without web connection. Of course, it doesn't make that much sense, cause many applications, like Google Maps, rely on the web connection.
But you can still use offline navigation, games, the camera, calendar etc. and that's all that she needs.
i like smartphones mostly for its computer-like functions excel/word/etc. and media player. but other than i dont need to be constantly connected to a data plan. it's a waste of $ for me =P

How'd you swing that? I doubt that will fly now unless you get someone that doesn't know what they are doing. I had to actually upgrade my data plan when I went from the Wizard to the Rhodium to get the discounted price.
yeah, i have no idea. i bought the phone... then called them and told them i DON'T want a data plan. they took the data plan out and that was many years ago now =P. my contract last summer. now i'm w/Tmo with NO contract! i luv it! i just put the sim in and i'm allset to go.
hoping2do likewise w/whatever new smartphone i get. put sim in and go. i have wifi everywhere i go. no need for stupid data plans. but now the phones are expensive ='(. the Tmo HD2 (for example) is like $600+
If you have Wi-Fi everywhere you go, then what's the problem? Your phone will work on Wi-Fi.
A modern smartphone's primary features are all not for you. GPS/Mapping on the go for example, or quickly checking email at the beach. However if you still want a smartphone for that Pocket Excel goodness, nothing's stopping you from going Wi-Fi only. Well, except the network operators; they want you to buy a plan if they're going to subsidize the phone).
AT&T 'conveniently' adds data plan
When I last spoke to AT&T a few weeks ago about using a Fuze on my current plan (swapping out a Nokia 6650), AT&T told me that anyone adding a new smart phone after some time last fall 2009, AT&T will automatically recognize that you are using a smart phone, and for our "convenience", automatically add a smartphone data plan. They also recently amended their legalese so that if you add a messaging phone to your plan, they will conveniently and automatically add some messaging service to that line. I'm not sure how that one works...
So, although I have a Fuze, and really wanted to swap out the SIM card so I can text easier, and only use wifi data, AT&T will drop a $30 data plan on me as soon as I put the sim in the Fuze and make a call.
Has anyone recently added a smartphone to AT&T and not had the "convenient" data plan added to their account?
briank2, that sounds fishy. never tell them what you're using, just say you have a old flip phone like razr and need simple txting. i think ATT used to offer $5 for 200txt and $10 for unlimited. now that i'm w/tmo, they dont have a $5 for 200, so i went w/$10 for unlimited and it's awesome. i no longer need to worry about limits =P
burnblue,
there's no problem for current winmo 6.x but it looks like WP7 might REQUIRE a data plan in of itself. but i'm just speculating. that is my only concern. that just means i can't use it. i want to... but don't want to spend the $ on data plan. it's ridiculous.
GPS can be used w/o data plan. when i'm @beach, i don't check email . so that's basically my concern is, if the WP7 OS is so 'azure/cloud'-oriented that they forcelock people to use data plan oNLY that i can't even use it w/o data plan. then it's basically gonna be android for me =P.

They have been changng data plans...if its att branded or part of some type of att merger etc the system can tell what phone ur using...its been that way for awhile far as i know....theyre just enforcing data plans which is one of the reason i stick with my $20 unlimited text/web with tmobile for my tp2. Far as the data requirements it seems like theyre copying google by having to have a live account http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=15475
my fears semi-confirmed:
A Windows Live ID is required to use Windows Phone 7 (similar to how iTunes is required for iPhone OS and how Gmail is linked to Android). It will be needed for synchronizing data such as contacts and text messages with Microsoft's servers and to access the Marketplace (the only way to get apps). After the device is first turned on, and the user has chosen the language and agreed to the terms and conditions, he or she will be asked to enter their Windows Live ID, or register for a new one. For Windows Live ID services to function correctly, the device must have a Genuine Windows Phone certificate, which comes with the phone and ensures that it is identified as running Windows Phone 7.

The entire WP7 philosophy is about arranging things so that you never need to do a hard reset.
I don't understand why someone would want a phone like this with out having a data plan. The phone is based on connecting with people, and the internet is a major part of the OS.
I can understnad if you live in a box and never leave that box and have wi-fi, then sure but, you would not need the phone because you would not have anyone to call...

Looking for new carrier, any help?

Hey guys. I was with T-mobile for a while but after they started throttling me aI switched to Sprint and got an Evo 3D. I'm sick of sprint now, but NEED Unlimited data because this is what I use for my home internet. Would anyone know of any good, cheap month-to-month GSM carriers that fit this discription? HSPA+ connectivity would be awesome too if that exists.
Can't wait to get back on the Nexus train!
Edit* for durp
There are no month-to-month options that give you unlimited data without throttling.
The only possible option is signing contract on Verizon and tricking them into giving you unlimited data. At that point you can just buy cable high speed at home and a month to month cell plan for much less... and you never have to worry about anything.
Get a home ISP. For God's sake people, these wireless plans are not meant to be exploited as home network solutions. Unless you're an extremely light home user that'll only use 10-15gb between both the phone and home, you need to just pay for cable high speed...
Most carriers don't give unlimited data anymore. If that is a priority, you could see if Verizon/AT&T and/or T-Mobile give unlimited data for business users, and see if you could sign up as a business user.
And martonikaj is right, if you use 10s or 100s of GBs per month at home, better to get a landline internet option. That itself will save you money.
And for the few ones that claim to have unlimited data, the data coverage is ****ty. What's the point of having 'unlimited' when you have no data most of the time?
I'm sorry to say but everyone is right. Go buy home internet. Quit being el cheapo.
Its people like you that require cell providers to throttle, remove unlimited plans , and "optimize networks"
If you used the cell phone as designed and as intended as a mobile device not home internet you'd be fine

I already pay for one Internet bill. I'm not paying for two. I do almost everything from my Mobile and I've done it this way for the last 5 years. And I'll continue to do it this way, thank you all very much.
Mobile phone's aren't dumb phones anymore, they are full on computers. Stop acting like it's 1999.
It's my fault that AT&T continues to waste cash on failed mergers or rebranding efforts? That Sprint bet on the wrong wireless standard? That T-Mobile was cheap and didn't want the iPhone when they had multiple chances to grab one and as a direct consequence it stunted their growth and with the continual loss of subscribers will eventually finish their company? It's my fault that companies couldn't look five years down the road and see a hint of the future? It's literally right there in the palm of your hand. It's my fault for signing a contract to use "unlimited" data when it was offered and offered gratefully? I even got a thank you when I re-signed. Twice.
The future is MOBILE, gentlemen. I just embrace it and use my iPhone, Galaxy Nexus, N9 and Lumia 800 the way it was designed and meant to be used as my central communications tool. Voice, text and data all working together without limits.
Quit making excuses for being cheap

That's cool and all, but these phones aren't meant to be home routers for regular home internet use on multiple computers and devices. People really need to just buy a modem and pay for home internet. Having just a smartphone for their only data may be practical for some people but its nowhere near efficient (cost or hassle wise) for most. As I said earlier, its cheaper to get a prepaid plan for your cell phone and a home cable connection with no data cap than it is to pay Verizon or AT&T monthly for just cell service.
Cell companies don't offer unlimited data anymore because they don't need people taking their phones and burning 150gb a month on 3G/4G. That's just not where the industry is right now. And you're crazy if you think that unlimited data on phones will be coming back any time soon.
To the poster who said "everything should be mobile", I can only say that there's a fixed amount of spectrum that very large and powerful companies and the very large and powerful government in the US is fighting over. There's only so much data that can be transmitted on that spectrum. Therefore you will have limits on mobile. Even with LTE, the engineers are getting very close to maxing out what they can transmit over mobile. Now of course they can get more by sticking a cell on everything, but that is going to take a while.
All in all, if you use more than 10 GB you should use a wireline connection that has the bandwidth capability to feed high bandwidth uses over a long time frame.

[Q] Possible "Unlimited" Data Coming to Verizon?

Hey guys,
First off I'd like to just recognize the XDA forums and its members for all of your help over the past few years as I've been rooting, unlocking, and troubleshooting my android devices. I started with the T-Mobile Dash (HTC Excalibur), T-Mobile MyTouch 3G, Sprint HTC Hero, Sprint Galaxy Tab (Original 7-inch), and now happily using my unlocked and rooted Verizon Galaxy Nexus running AOKP M5.
Anyway, i recently was on the phone with Verizon to bump up my data plan to the 10GB / month deal for $50. We ended up bullshitting a bit about how old unlimited plans are going away with upgrades, and how people want true, unthrottled, unlimited data. Now I don't know how much truth there is in this, or if she was maybe just trying to get my hopes up, but she mentioned that in the near future verizon is going to launch a truly unlimited family data plan.
Has anyone else heard of this? Now this was only a tier 1 customer service representative, and I know I've heard a lot of people mention how the tier one people are not given any information about upcoming promotions like this. But it makes me think that maybe if there is any truth to this, other customer service members must know of it too, and possibly have told other curstomers.
So i was wondering if anyone other than me has heard anything? And if Verizon was to release an "Unlimited" data plan (family or per device), do you think it would end up being throttled?
If they were going to release an unlimited plan why would they bother removing the current ones?
I think its full of crap... Verizon is trying to get ppl to leave the Unlimited plans just like AT&T... recently Verizon said announced that ppl on unlimited were going to be forced out of it. But with so many petitions going around Verizon decided "fine u can keep your unlimited data plans but when it comes to upgrades, you'd be forced to pay the phone at retail price" ..... I personally never get upgrades from carriers... I'm on AT&T and I haven't upgraded my line in about 4 years. Bought the Nexus One .. went for the Nexus S ... and Now The Galaxy Nexus... but if what the lady says is true then my guess is that Verizon doesn't have enough ppl on the 4G network soooo perhaps this Works to there advantage. And of course there will always be a Throttle. =P

Because it's a grandfathered plan that CDMA customers got for a relatively inexpensive monthly fee. And I don't believe they are doing away with the plan for CDMA-only customers, as that "problem" should automaticaly take care of itself in just a few generations of phones. I've always thought that it was just a matter of time before they stoped offering their loyal long-time customers unlimited LTE service for the same low monthly rate they've always paid. Othewise tens of thousands of people would be using it for their home internet service as the LTE network grows. I'm sure many folks already are.
I'm only speculating, but the "Unlimitied Family Data" concept does sound feasible. But I'll bet it will cost more than twice what the grandfathered customers are now paying for it. Perhaps significantly more.

Well, i know that currently i believe there are only per device unlimited plans. What I've heard is that those plans will be switched to a tiered data plan if you are still on 3G and upgrade to a 4G LTE device.
What the Verizon lady was saying is that they will bring back unlimited as a Family Plan add-on, so that you can pay, say $100 (total guess), and get truely unlimited data on every device on your plan.
For me, this would be great, because everyone on my plan uses at the very least 4GB of data a month. This adds up to be about $150 in data plans across all the devices. If we could consolidate our data plans to one family plan wide "plan" then we could save alot of money, and use as much data!

I know it probably wont happen due to the proprietary 4G LTE technology, but it would be great to see Google offer unlocked 4G LTE nexus devices directly (on the play market). I would LOVE to pay google directly for their device at a slightly higher price, and not have to worry about voiding warranty or contract by modding my phone. Plus id love to get the actual google back cover for my GNEX, instead of that ugly Verizon stamped one...
How many years must i wait for truely unlimited data so i can use my device and the internet the way it was meant to be used!?!?

I don't see why they'd be bringing back unlimited data when they haven't offered it to new subscribers for quite a long time now. They've clearly expressed that they want to launch family data plans, but I doubt they'd be unlimited. It goes against the direction they've (and other carriers) been pushing.

You must have not read your contract, which clearly states unlimited data on your phone, not unlimited data on every device you choose to connect to your phone.
I suggest taking the time to read your entire contract so you can find out everything you are doing that is clearly not covered by the agreement you signed with Verizon.

Funny, I don't recall anyone asking for your opinion on this... i thought this thread was on the possibility of unlimited data coming our way.
OMG the world will end because people like me share internet to their computer! Do you guys realize that your on a website that specializes in stuff like, hmmmmm, wifi tethers? I understand their is a whole mess of more complicated things here, but honestly.... quit being so old fashioned. times are changing more and more each day. soon only big businesses will have data from the wall and everything will be wireless.
Also, why would they give us the ability to wifi tether if they didn't want us to use our data for it?
Inb4 "that's why they charge extra for tehtering", maybe the people who do that actually paid for the official service?
*edit*
I'm an unlimited 3g user. I use wifi and Bluetooth tether, but only when I am in a place that doesn't have its own wifi or if my home wifi is acting up. Not all unlimited tetherers are bad. Besides, I pull in FAR more data streaming my music with Google Play Music.

The extra charge just for the ability to tether is BS! Just because i dont throw $40 a month to verizon to pay for a tether, doesnt mean im stealing data. I pay for the data no matter what. So what i use that data for and what device i use that data on should be totally up to me.

[Q] AT&T switched my data plan right away

After using my Note 2 for about an hour I got a text from AT&T saying they were switching my data plan because a LTE data plan was required. Previously I had an unlimited data plan. Sure enough, I checked my account online and now I have the 3 gb plan with $10 per 1gb over the limit. How can they do this? I don't want this? What are my options? I specifically bought the Note 2 paying full retail because I didn't want AT&T to know I switched phones. This sucks!!
I am pretty sure the recent fcc agreement with related fines for switching customers or forcing customers from their unlimited plans to limited plans was considered illegal. I would be *****ing up a storm and filing a complaint with the FCC, online. Wouldn't hurt to file an online complaint with the attorney general from your state either.
I had unlimited plan (non lte) which was grandfathered. After purchase of Note 2, noticed that I was put on a 3gb plan. I called AT&T and within 24 hours my unlimited plan was restored.
They switched me to the unlimited lte plan when I switched, att customer service was super helpful, almost too helpful. You might call them and see what they say.
Keep us posted.

Just spent an hour on the phone with two dumb twits (in India from their accent) of AT&T's customer service department. They said I had an unlimited non-smartphone plan and that they could not upgrade me to an unlimited LTE plan. I mentioned the FCC ruling ( http://bgr.com/2012/11/07/att-fcc-fine-data-plans/ ) but I don't know if people in India even know what the FCC is. Those people on the phone don't give last names or employee numbers so they feel they are unacountable.
I've been using a smart phone for the past 4 years but apparently I was still on the non-smart phone plan. They said because of that they can not switch me over to the unlimited LTE plan. So, what should I do now? I will not stay wit ha limited plan. I'll switch to T-Mobile first. However my AT&T Note 2 will not work with T-Mobile's system I think. Also, I'd rather not switch as its a pain in the ass. I really hope I can get this resolved. Do you think I'd have beeter luck in person at a store?
That doesn't quite add up. How can you be on a non-smartphone plan with a smartphone for 4 years? So what plan did they have you at? And with unlimited data?
Either way, when I switched from my iPhones to the Note II, they had no problem switching my grandfathered unlimited plan to unlimited LTE. What they did tell me is they'd have to register me with a regular LTE data plan during the phone's sale, then they put it back to grandfathered unlimited status at activation, LTE and all.
Did you get the phone online or at the store?

When I switched from my dumb phone to my smart phone 4 years ago I didn't tell them about it so I guess I was still on the unlimited data for no-smart phones. Well, how stupid they are to think I go through 20-30 GB of data a month without it being a smart phone (I did a lot of tethering during those years).
I bought my Note 2 online. I assumed they wouldn't know about the phone switch since they didn't know about my phone switch 4 years ago. I guess because the Note 2 uses a different frequency they became aware of it that way. Anyway, it shouldn't matter. I was on an unlimited plan before and I think it is not unreasnable to be on an unlimited plan after switching. God how I hate AT&T. I was playing cards with some friends earlier tonight and an AT&T ad came on the TV. I wanted to throw something at the TV so badly!

Never evereverever..never! call after normal business hours and or the weekend, you will get outsourced!...everever..never!!! My granddaughters Kindle Plus (1st Gen) fell victim to the known USB mini port failure,1 month out of warranty. My daughter called after normal business hours Monday..OUTSOURCED!!...ever.never. They told her it would cost her $150 to get it replaced , after a 1/2hr she gave up. She told me what happened, and I told here to call regular business hours. So she did the next day on Tuesday, not outsources, new Kindle Plus arrived this Friday no charge at all. They sent a return label to send the bad unit back within 30 day's. Don't know if you'll have this kind of luck, but from all of my vast past experience with this type of stuff you stand a much better chance calling 9-5 Monday thru Friday. These phone Reps in these far off lands can do the job, but they aren't given the authority to. So be firm but cordial, good luck, God speed, and eat hearty!

Upstate New York US, Just south of Syracuse New York. Eastern time slot. 11:15pm here.
Go into an Att store. I have been in several where the people are really nice and will help you work through this. If you don't find this to be true, go to a different store and try again. Unfortunately, you might have wasted your money getting the full retail version of the phone. Why not just return it and get one through Att or Best Buy? Mine cost me $175 with the contract extension and I'm happy as can be. As for your true unlimited data, this might be the end of that! Welcome to throttling (but check out the thread on how to bypass the data limit). Whatever you do, don't stop until you've found someone who helps you convert your plan to a grandfathered unlimited one.

After your explanation, I see now why you were switched. Here's what's apparently happening. Your smartphone before the Note II apparently didn't require LTE or report that it needed it, hence why AT&T gullible-y never realized you were using a smartphone. It's also possible that your smartphone was also on the 3G network only, which is what most non-smartphones use. Although the Note II can run on 3G networks, it would still report to the carrier that it needs access to 4G to 4G LTE networks unless you had told it not to, which seems you didn't within the hour of using it. Of course, you wouldn't have known this since you just got the phone. It also would have told AT&T that your IMEI had changed the moment you put the sim card in, which would have revealed to AT&T that you did indeed have a Note II, hence this situation.
Either way, there's no way around this situation as far as I can see unless you ask them if there's a way you can be considered as grandfathered into regular unlimited data. If you're a long time AT&T user, cite that you've been a loyal customer, but tell them you'd hate to have to go to another carrier over this. You would also need to be under contract.
No offense, and I'm guilty in another form of this in a way, but due to your circumstances, it can be perceived that you tried to cheat the system, which is in no way AT&T's fault, but yours, and you're just upset that you got caught.

If its unlim smartphone data it will be grandfathered if u bought the phone and it was manually swapped. If u have unlim smartphone data and put your sim in an lte device without telling att, the system will automatically add the 3gb plan. Its not made to add unlim even if you have it. If you upgrade at a store online or over the phone with unlim data you will keep it.

Until two days ago I didn't know there were two seperate unlimited plans (one for smart phone and one for non-smart phones). The reason I didn't tell AT&T I switched to a smartphone 4 years ago is because I thought I would lose my unlimited data plan. It was not to save $15 a month. I could care less about that. It hindsight I should have told them and been on the unlimited smartphone plan but I was so concerned that they would cancel my unlimited data plan I din't do that.

Well, I may have cheated the system for $15 a month it turns out but that was not my intention. My intention was only to keep unlimited data. Don't we all "cheat the system" here everytime we do something that the networks don't want us doing with our phones? Tethering, trying to get around throttling, even rooting can be considered cheating the system. I always thought that was part of the spirit of modding and customizing.

I like 'circumvented' better than cheated; it sounds less judgemental. Yeah, those may be my two options. If they are, I will choose option 2-- go to a different carrier. In that case, I'll be putting my 3-day old Note 2 up for sale I guess and buying one from T-Mobile.

I was using a HTC Touch HD. It was a great phone for the time and I installed Dutty's custom rom found on these forums. However a lot has changed in 4 years. I don't like the progress (or lack of it) with Windows and all of my 'must have' programs are now available on Android so making the switch was an each choice (and long overdue).

I'm sorry to anyone who misconstrued my remarks. I was upset with the customer service reprezsentative and her thick accent was not making matters any easier. Perhaps that is why I mentioned that she was probably in India. I certainly didn't mean to disparage all Indians and if anyone took it that way I am sorry.
A followup session with a rep today resulted in pretty much the same thing, except they're giving me $50 off my next bill. Really though, by that point I didn't even try that hard. I've decided I'll switch to T-Mobile because, even if I got to keep unlimited data with AT&T there would still be the throtttling issues to deal with each month. T-Mobile may not have the breakneck speed of AT&T (right now) but I don't need 50+ Mb/s.

I don't know.. AT&T didn't discontinue unlimited or throttled data back then.. You shouldn't have had any issues keeping unlimited data when switching phones unless you wanted to save $15/month.
