[Q] how come there are no custom roms for this phone? - LG Optimus G (International)

Just checked the development forums and they are basically empty.
Is it just that the phone is new? Or has there been no way to root it yet? I'm thinking of getting this phone but I'd like to know if I'll have the option of rooting/loading a custom ROM.
One last question - is this phone any different then the nexus? it seems to have the same hardware other then a better camera and have LTE.
Thanks

Nexus 4 is optimus G with no amplifiers/filters for LTE, less storage, different camera, wireless charger, RGB led.
No roms cause thats the international version section, its still kinda rare and the boot still locked.

I'm in Canada so I'm not entirely sure, but if Sprint is like any other carrier they will push an update to 4.2 loooooonnnnnggggg after the devs here have cooked about a dozen customs Rom's for it. They are working on AOSP now. Shouldn't be too long.

Oh i know i can get it sooner here, but this isnt my phone and for some stupid reason my friend doesn't want me to root his phone, so just wondering how long he's gonna have to wait to get any of the new stuff 4.2 has

You sure? I read that because unless we have CWM, we're not getting custom ROMs.

CWM and TWRP are both out for the North American variants. Just need the ROMS to be cooked.

From the looks of it, there are a few devs that have this device (judging from the "root-testing" discussion). I'm sure that it won't be too long before we see some work. Still a relatively new device here in the US.
I'm getting my hands on it tonight, so I'll give her a looksie. If I can do something with what I find, then I will. It's my first LG (primary body of work on Moto devices), so it might be slow...

Kernel sources? I thought we needed those. The international version as it stands now runs fine on my phone.
seeing as the international is a gsm phone, wouldn't the kernel sources be sufficiently different from our phone so as not to work? Never messed with kernels before, so sorry if it's a stupid question.

Kernel sources for everything not related to ril would help us, so Wifi, BT, GPS, etc. Since we already have 3g and SMS working, my guess is that the kernel source for the int'l SGS II could round out what we need to get an acceptable working ICS ROM.

Not entirely. The radio sources would be, yes, but the hardware drivers are the same (so stuff to get the camera and whatnot working could be used) as our phone, I think.

Samsung already stated they will be having updates by the first quarter for some devices like the SGS2 , but in the end it's up to the carriers and Sprint loves to drag it out.

People have been having issues booting back to stock or anything else for that matter. May I ask have you nandroid back to anything since booting it up? Also does your pc recognize your phone?
I wouldn't expect Sprint to have a Release of ICS for the Epic Touch until late Summer or early Fall 2012. By then, the phone will be almost 1 year old and Sprint will start saying the ET4G is "End of Life" and stop supporting it altogether.

Fortunately for us, we don't have to rely on Sprint, as Samsung will release the kernel sources we need to get where we need to go. Also, the 4.0 iteration we would get from Sprint would be TouchWiz'd up, which for me I could care less about. We will have daily-driver quality CM9 and AOSP ICS well before we see an official ICS-based ROM released by Sprint.
And before you ask, yes I have been with Sprint for a long time, and yes I came from the OG Epic 4g.

The people doing it are Odin a tar and its bricking them because they don't know what they are doing....you can use the tar file with mobile Odin pro and retain root which will allow you to use mobile Odin to flash kernel with cwm to get out of the brick but without root can't use mobile Odin...you can take the tar apart and make a ROM out of it...as long as the bootloader and radio is not in there you should be good

Is this a good purchase right now? In the situation i'm in if I don't get this phone I will be stuck with my nexus s for 2 years so might as well get a new phone for the 2 years. Also do you guys think this will get CM9? Thanks.!

This phone is getting CM9 eventually. Cyanogen's update said it was coming after the international version s2 one rolls out.
Yo bro this is the best phone T-Mobile has believe me u won't be disappointed grab it. And yes we will get cm9 after the exynos devices. snapdragon is next and devices alike and were in this category
CM9 will come. This device is the top 3 devices out right now, and will still be relevant after a year or more.
short answer: yes
I took advantage of the FAR V-day sales last week. I was tempted to wait for the Galaxy Nexus, but it seem T-Mo is always the last one to get any decent phones. Since my Nexus One was showing its age, I ordered the GS2 and renewed a 2yr contract. I figured as long as the hw is capable of running custom ROM's, it really doesn't matter if it's the Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy S2.

By the time CM9 comes out, many other phones that are far better than the GS2 will be out, including the GS3.
If you really want CM, get a phone that supports it initially.

No we definitely need the drivers that's why we need Samsung to drop ics. Because building drivers from scratch is no easy task. It can be done but will take a while. That is why a lot of devs rather wait for that it will make life that much easier when compiling a rom. I know xboarder said he is building drivers tho. We need those for sound, touchscreen, and etc.. also cm prolly has already done this we will prolly see something from them before official

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1996038
Above is the link to the 7100 ROM it looks amazing.... What does it take to make this flash-able onto our T Mobile devices... If it doesn't include a radio couldn't we just flash it? I am too scared to flash and try...its less scary to post a new thread ask you to try...haha. If a devo could shed some light or a brave soul could "test" it that would be great.

You can flash it. If you want to lose your radio. Unfortunately even if the 7100 rom does not include radio we have significant differences in our hardware that causes the radio not to work. Most likely something in the ril or kernel I believe (I could be wrong about the reasons). We dont have an AOSP kernel for the 7105 or tmo version.
Thank you sir... man, I really want that ROM. Was using XquiziT's ROM but the was having a couple problems with it and now the future for it looks bleak. (What I liked so much was the AOSP parts added in) Going to give Saurom a go now I guess.

we need some devs solely working on what needs to be done for porting from one device to another. the fact that the ROM even functions on our device without modification should be a decent indicator of how close we are.
look in the US SGS3 section, 4 variants all with small differences and porting roms between those 4 is a piece of cake.
if someone could make a stand alone CWM.zip that we flash after a N7100 ROM that gave us back the radio it would be perfect. then we could just run any N7100 rom we wanted, no porting needed.

well as much as i love the note 2 if we don't get any aosp love soon ill probably swap devices with my wife. at least her sg3 has cm10/aokp. again not complaining, i just hope development picks up. i was thinking about getting a nexus 4 to tide me over but i hate lg. if anything i still hope the note 2 see's android 4.2.
I am curious. I have had CM/AOKP for years with my other phones. With this one seems a lot of the features I really love are here. What do you feel is missing from TW that AOKP/CM gives you. I am not a fan of TW colors but overall it is good (and I xan theme colors away). Only thing I really miss from AOKP is the wigets popup from nav bar.
Aosp is lighter and for me runs better.

Personally I really look forward to having a ROM with mass storage support. Since Google removed it from Android, I am no longer able to connect my phone to Linux for easy transfer of files and have to use all kinds of alternatives.
Not sure it can't be done on a TW based ROM, but CM/AOKP ROMs seem to more commonly introduce it like the one mentioned in this thread.

I second the motion for USB mass storage functions. Maybe wi-fi direct or other technology will supersede it, but it would be nice to have the capabilities meantime.

This I can understand I really wish google made ums/mass storage an option. I understand why they went with ums but options are always nice.
Reasons why I think they went UMS
1) ability to keep sdcard mounted while connected to computer
2) ability to mount /sdcard on /data/media making the internal sdcard the same as the internal data memory
3) most people people use windows
4) the option to turn it on/off may confise some people.
The only one I disagree with is number 4. Stupidd people will find a way to be stupid no matter how much you coddle them.

Yes and I have insurance. At the moment insurance wont take any claim of mine. Man somebody got a warranty exchanged of my galaxy s2 during christmas time and it was sent to new york. When I call tmobile they sent me to the insurance department. they gave me a fraud ticket but I still get calls from tmobile saying to return the defective phone or I will be charged. I called tmobile again and they said that they cant do nothing about it. That they will charge me the $200 and when they do I have to call em back so they can take off that $200 off of my bill. but until they do I cant filed a exchange or a report. Sucks big time. and its been 3 months now. So I dont want to get my phone messed up until that is fixed

Their multiwindow isn't working yet. The only ROM with multiwindow working is SynergyROM which I'm attempting to port right now.

Google Play Edition ROM Possible?

Wanting to pick up this phone today since it is unlockable, but I'm curious as to whether anyone knows if a GPE ROM could be loaded onto this bad boy. Wanting to go as much nexus experience as I can on Verizon. Thanks.

I'm sure it will be before we know it. Bootloader is unlocked and I'm pretty sure they have root almost working. And it's day one... lol.,

It wouldn't work because the radios are completely different on this Verizon ONE vs the GSM/LTE version. I am, however, super confident in some of the devs that have surfaced here already will be getting us CM10.1.2 or CM10.2 soon.

Yea but they already have it on the DNA... Not much to change there...
Alright cool.. any guesses what the dev community is going to be like? Hoping a lot of devs are interested in this device.

unlockable via htcdev.com - but it's already been tweeted that there's an update pending to close that up
I am extremely interested in a GPE Rom for this, Please let me know if there is one in the works!
They were able to port it over with Sprint. It should be doable with Verizon as well.
First GE ROM is being offered to brave testers. Nothing confirmed stable yet. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2416875

newtoroot is on-board with this device, so you can expect the GPE rom to be super stable and any bugs will get ironed out quick

Unfortunately it sounds like HTC has closed down the unlock, though, and he doesn't have his device yet.
Edit: I realize he can still work on it, but I'm sure it would be 1000x easier with the device in hand.
