Web browsing question - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hey all, just got my S3. Have been living on a G2 for a full 2 years. Had no issues, didnt see a need to upgrade. But I finally did.
I do a lot of news browsing on my fone, part of my job, i was able to double tap the text portion and my G2 would center and fit to screen just the text of the articles. Havent been able to figure out that on my S3. Is it even possible or do i just have to try and zoom and landscape view everything?
Another quick question, quick closing web page currently viewing. Say I was reading an article on one webpage and another window had say um er porn, how would i quick close the porn and go back to the article. (girlfriend is a quiet walker)

I use xscope browser, swipe to the side and the screen changes to your other open page and dbl tap zoom works.

Regarding the text resize issue, the default browser should have that functionality. Check that settings > advanced > auto fit is enabled. If I was worried about hiding pr0n fast I would just hit home and open something random. It'd be like to key presses. I'm guessing switching tabs would have to be the same or more.

but that does not explain the pants around the ankles....

Stock browser has a reading mode. On a lot of sites press the green R in the address bar. Not quite the same but can be nice to use.

This made me chuckle.
Why not just hit the home button ?
Is it really more believable to be going at it to an article about stool softener, solar panels, or Obama than your homescreen ? Homescreen's probably less awkward than Obama, man, unless your girlfriend is into that.
Also, browsers have tabs. Just switch tab ? Delineate browser usage by function ?
Or just look at porn together or something that way you don't have to hide it. :good:

Thanks guys, the autofit actually helped a lot.
"checking for hemoroids" is a good excuse for the pants around the ankles. Has worked for me.

ahhhh, funny guy.
+1
It eats too many space.
I think they should make the address bar disappear below the screen when browsing and come back up with a flick from the bottom, or a slide from lower left like for the paste icon.
a pop up/pop out address bar icon would be enough for me.
+1 Options! Options! Options!! There should always be OPTIONS!

I agree there should be a switch. But even if it turned on it should disappear like opera 10. Then pull it up bu a little tab showing while your browsing.

It's a very common option in forum polls, even if it's only humorous. Pie should always be an option

In my opinion there should be a slider to turn on/off the adress bar in landscape mode and once activated a little button should appear which opens the bar.

Some Tips & Tricks

I stumbled across these and thought I would share. Feel free to add anything you might have found:
If you turn off auto-brightness, you can brighten the screen with a swipe of the finger. Just press the notifications area and move your finger left or right.
On both the homescreen and the apps menu you will see a row of dots indicating which page you are on. Hold the dot and scroll left or right. The pages will quickly scroll until you see the page you want.
You can focus your camera on a specific thing by touching that area on your screen.
In the camera app you can use the volume buttons to zoom in and out. OR you can pinch to zoom in and out.
Mute the Battery Notification (using Tasker) Directions are here.
Swipe left on contact name from the contact list and you'll automatically be able to send a text.
Swipe right on a contact name from the contact list and you'll automatically be able to call them.
Press your home button and lock screen button (power button) at the same time to save a screenshot.
You can scroll much faster on some apps such as YouTube, Astro File Manager and Market by using 3 fingers and if you scroll with 2 fingers you get precise scrolling (no scroll momentum).
Hold down the home button to access recent programs and the task manager.
Good stuff. Thanks!
Very useful tips, thanks!
But aren't these two basically the same thing?

I'll still never understand the logic of having a WHITE background in a messaging app... Talk about a battery killer!
That's one thing I'm going to miss about the Moment. Black background in the STOCK app, rather than having to install a 3rd party app.
All though, if I'm forced to, Go SMS is my preference.

Thanks for the tip! It worked but now I have a followup question. Is there anyway to use the Handcent Icon widget in my dock? One of the reasons I love Handcent is the widget that shows how many unread messages I have.
FYI, other reasons I like Handcent: the lockscreen popup, it allows me to use my own sounds/mp3s as ringtones and alarms, Emoji pack allows me to send and receive emoji icons with my iPhone friends
U can hold 2 points on the screen like with ur thumbs for example. Then tilt ur phone forward or back to zoom. Just like that 10.1 tablet

Can you turn off the silly "bubble" chat with Handcent yet? Last time I tried it (a year ago) I couldn't stand the comic book look.
I'll probably use Go SMS until a dev over at SDX reverse releases a black version of the stock SMS.apk.
I'm also hoping the old version of GMail works so I can copy it over and use it with LauncherPro with working mail counts.
U dont have to have to have the bubble look. Handcent gives us different options. Android style is included if u r curious

Anyone Else Really Digging The Address Bar At The Bottom?

First time really using Mango. I just love the bar at the bottom in IE. As mobile's get bigger it's stunningly awesome. The only thing left I want is for it to hide and I'll swipe to go get it and swiping tabs.
Very cool feature. Thought I would hate it at first.
Its different. But they really need to revamp I.e. N quick and accessible back and forward buttons

I second that, what with these huge screens now it's so easy to get to, whereas before was a bit of an effort, especially if you're in bed using it lying down.

I don't get it - why do you like the address bar being permanently stuck there? Do you really need to constantly look down and be reminded of what site you're on?
Back / Forward / Favourites / Tabs buttons like on iOS (or WP7 pre-Mango) would be far more useful. I honestly can't see how being able to see the URL of the site is a cool feature; would love it if you could explain..

You should read better. He just likes the new position. But he clearly said that he would want it to hide after a few seconds.
I love the address-bar at the bottom and I agree it would be even more awesome if it had autohide after a few secs.
I prefer it at the bottom with no autohide. when i am done reading a site, i want to type a new address or go to favorites, not mess with trying to make it reappear.
It also is following windows 8 metro IE 10. It's the same way.

Just tap anywhere on a site that doesn't contain a link. Your address bar should disappear. At least it does on my W8 CP when I left click.
On my Trophy, the address bar at the bottom is a pain for me. I do a lot of single-hand typing - when the address bar was at the top, it was easy to 'thumb', but now its just not as easy...more risk me dropping the phone etc.
Plus I now sometimes accidentally press the windows or back button as well, when selecting the bar.
A simple option in settings would be nice.

confirmed. Not sure why i didn't notice the behavior. You have to wait for the site to finish loading before it will minimize. on Windows 8 CP
Its good and there should be a button to swap tabs at the side of the address bar.
I feel like Windows Phone 8 will bring a lot of gestures and UX elements from Windows 8. For example IE will be full screen on the phone and you would swipe from the top bar to bring up the menus.. Super awesome I think. Then in the menu you can add the address bar, back and forward buttons or whatever common functions you need in IE.
i don't care if the address bar is at bottom or on top. i need the "find on page" back. i almost stopped using the browser.

There's a JavaScript that does exactly that. Add it to your favorites and voila, you have your find on page feature back. Not as convenient as having it as part of the menu though.

[APP][LAUNCHER] TasKarou Launcher Overlay

Tired of moving your fingers up/down your tablet to switch applications? Try out TasKarou!
TasKarou is a multitasking launcher overlay.
Taking inspiration from the 'Quick Controls' feature in the android browser, TasKarou provides a multitasking layer on top of a launcher on tablets.
By swiping anywhere on the left or right edge of your tablet screen, you can activate TasKarou's UI.
It gives you access to a quick, smooth, and intuitive interface to facilitate app launch, transition, and management for the user
The user interface brings a more responsive, and enjoyable level of interaction to your tablet.
Notes:
To use TasKarou, set it as the default home launcher, and from TasKarou's settings, select the actual home launcher you want to overlay.
TasKarou user interface is then triggered by swiping from either the left of right edge of your tablet screen, while still allowing access to the overlaid home launcher through the home button.
The app is also available in the android market.

It's not possible to use both at the same time, since both controls rely on the user touching the edge of the screen.
If you have an idea on how I could get around that issue, I'm all ear.

some ideas from the top of my head:
- disable taskarou menu completely when in browser
- disable one side of the screen (permanently or when in browser)
- disable the upper/lower/middle half of the screen (permanently or when in browser)
on another note, the notification HAS to go. at least make it optional.
that being said, i really do like the concept of the app :good: i found myself regularly swiping in from the screen edges when not in browser, and then being disappointed that nothing happened.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have a few other ideas along with the ones you suggest that I will try to integrate, and test in the following days.
In the meantime, I updated TasKarou to also support android phones. I duplicated this thread in the 'Android Apps and Games' section to make it more visible: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984010

Definitely slick in some aspects. Can't say I really like it as it messes with my LMT set up and takes up more RAM on top of it.
There's a lot to be done like distinguishing different "hotspots" and designating right side only or left side only. Overall though I really enjoy the transitions and how the menu auto-switches based on which choices you're hovering over. Very intuitive choices too that I agree with about which things go where.
Looking forward to the potential this holds in the future. I may just abandon my LMT setup if done right.
Edit: And of course the ability for users to add/edit the options, potentially switch the color for mere superficial reasons. Something like my screenshot.

Maybe ask SwipePad's developer.
(I'm not being sarcastic)
Really useful. Love the idea, but it does cause a few conflicts with apps that rely on swiping from the sides of the screen. Having said that, when I set the margin to 13 pixels I can use the Dolphin browser (for example) without too many issues by not swiping from the outer edge, but by placing the finger a little more away from the edge and then swiping inwards. Other apps are less forgiving.
What about a button in the notification area, which is visible at all times anyways?
EDIT:
If swiping has the preference, then it would be more logical to align the available programs/tasks to the side from which was swiped. Swiping and selecting can be done with one hand then, regardless of which hand was used to swipe with.
The recents button is useless, I never use it, ever.
I'd like the option to use this instead and just disable the side activation altogether.
Nice idea. However on TF101 after getting the quick control moving the finger to one of the options too fast causes the quick controls to disappear. I have to move the thumb really slow in order to select any option. Hopefully, this will be fixed soon:fingers-crossed:.
ppl get over it, the man is trying to make ur life simpler, so if u don't like some stuff about the app then tell him your opinions in a decent way so he can make a proper development for the app instead of trashing it, otherwise f*** off
I like this!
1. I only see it from the right edge in portrait.
2. Might have a user selected area(s) for its swipe. This would allow those with conflicts to fix them. There is a similar app on Play which just gives a row running/recent apps icons which is not a bad interface. I found its use of the bottom obtrusive.
3. The home key does not go home in the base browser (I am using Trebuchet on a CM10).
4. There is a difference between "running" and "recent" (exited, cached, and still available.) !!
Long press of home gives a vertically tiled thumbnail view of both.
Taskarou shows only icons of running apps, not recent.
Taskarou should show both, either in two panes or in one with some distinction?, i.e. frame around one or the other. I sort of like having the thumbnails and they could be tiled or cascaded. If cascaded, should be focus-able, if tiled, scroll larger view like the app list. Best eliminated the number of apps option or make that for the pane (but that would be scroll-able for more). Cascading the main webOS motif. Flick down to kill?

First of all, as far as I can see, no one is trashing his app. So maybe lower your tone a bit and at least pretend to be able to communicate in a proper way.instead of telling people to "F-off".
The developer probably appreciates the feedback as he responds to it. Feedback (be it positive or negative) is valuable for both him and the app he works on. The end product can benefit from any kind of feedback as it points out flaws and strong points, and it can give the developer some different perspectives and experiences from different users and from different devices.
The day a developer stops listening to his/her targeted market is the day the product will begin its downfall.

Was having issues on my Nexus 7 running SmoothRom 4.1.2. Updated to 4.2 and no more disappearing quick controls as soon as my finger leaves the border. To get them to stay I had to leave my finger there for at least 1.5 seconds. Now all is well. Really liking it. I look forward to extended and customizable menus
Update:
Scratch that. Conflict was gesture control. Had it set to consume events in starting zone. So a touch on the edge first went to gesture control. Just an iD10t error.

Do we have this ability?

So I always have my gs3 and ipad handy at night and like to browse the forums. My ipad has a nifty ability of touching the status bar to automatically scroll to the top of the page when I'm finished. On my gs3 it can be a pita racing to the top. I have anxiety and insomnia so I like things to be as quick and efficient as possible. With all these needless fillers said, do we have this ability on our phones, is there a mod we can use?
There's double tap to top of list but unfortunately I've only seen that work in contacts.. Doesn't seem to work with the xda app. Go to motion settings and enable it and see what it works with.
Thanks for the reply. I only tried chrome and stock browser but nada. I did find a neat litte shortcut wheel with a nice array of option sets per section in settings>labs. Maybe I can drop a suggestion to add scroll to the top, but to where
I seen on google, there was this guy having trouble writing a code over the summer but he never mentioned if he ever completed it.
Scroll with your finger on the far far right of the screen. It activates a fast scrolling option. I do it by accident all the time and have to find where I was on the page before that.
