[Q] Email App Help - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Evening all,
I am after a bit of advice. Being new to this Droid world im having a bit of difficulty with the email app. The one in the iPhone just… worked but the one that is built in with my note is providing to be a little more challenging. The Gmail app works great and I love it, but it doesn’t support my Uni email which is via exchange.
If I use the stock app, it has a horrible black screen which makes text hard to read, and it doesn’t always sync my emails properly.
Any advice on email apps? I want what I had on my iPhone, or as close to it as possible.
Thanks in advance

I don't know what this "black screen" you mention is. I use the stock email for my multiple exchange accounts. I have no problem with reading or consistency.
I'm on a us at&t unrooted. Providing a screen shot may help.

Thanks for the quick reply. The black screen is when I open the email app and it shows the email in thread form. When I open the email the background is usually white.

No black here. Did you change some other settings?

I will try and upload something now

Please see attached screenshot. I have minimised all mail messages. Basically you have a black background and grey text. Its not ideal when reading. In addition to this i have found that Google will push the email to its own app, but using this Samsung app, it needs a time period to sync. I have tried a few different settings and not had much success.

I see now. I have too much mail for a condensed view to be an issue showing a black screen. That seems to be a very trivial issue. You can't really read your messages if they're closed up like that !
Yes gmail does have push, but you can have the same thing with exchange. However, it's not nearly as efficient; ive had exchange live push drain batteries way too quickly. Email polling is a standard feature on all email clients that are not "native" to the Microsoft ecosystem. The upside is you can set the time range for more often vs over hours (such as non work time or the middle of the night ).
Short story is, try to adjust to a different way of doing something. And nothing prevents you from doing a manual refresh on those OCD days.

I was using the collapsed view just to show the background. The text from any emails are a shade of grey with a black background. Really annoying.

Microsoft Exchange Widget

Hi. I just got the Galaxy S and set up my uni's Microsoft Exchange Push e-mail on it. It's working well but it's a bit of a pain to open the email app every time I get a new email.
Is there a widget that displays your more recent e-mails? I used to have a HTC Touch HD before so something like the sense e-mail screen would be amazing...
I've had a look around the Market and this forums but no luck so far. Has anyone come across anything like that?
Thanks in advance
correct me if i am wrong but in the normal mail client of the galaxy u can also enter how recent your email must be? so it doesnt show everything all the time?
Not sure you are answering the question here
THe idea is to have a preview of the recent mail on a widget without opening the mail app
I have this kind of widget with Touchdown but the problem is that you have to pay for this app and it's 20$!!
I didn't find somwthing like the sense widget for the mail ...
Regards
Nicolas
Moxier Mail has a preview widget, of sorts, or use Pure Messanger with K9 plugin.

&
Pure messenger (1.49 Euro i think)

But i found it a bit slow and limited with touchwiz
Works well as a scrollable widget on Launcher Pro though
ah yeah indeed i misunderstood the question. but i dont see the problem anyway when opening e-mail when u have new mail. u even get a nice popup in the top-bar that u have new mail which u can instant open from there..
but then again, maybe it could be better with a widget yea
Thanks for the advise. Guess I'll live with the default email client. It's no problem it's just that 80% of the email I get isn't important so it's nice to get an instant preview to see if it's worth reading

[Q] Facebook Statusbar Notification

Hey,
i recently switched from an HTC Hero to an iPhone and now "back" to a Desire.
It's great of course but there is one thing I'm missing:
On my here i had got (with Froydvillain) status bar notifications for facebook. Whenever someone made a comment or whatever i got a status bar notification. is this possible on the desire, too?
Thanks
With the current Facebook app 1.5.1 I think, push notifications do exist, but they don't work and need to be fixed. Notifications do happen sometimes but it is useless app.
I've been looking for push notifications for facebook for ages and so far the nearest and best thing I've found is a free app from the market, called Flow.
The free app checks for new notifications every half hour and contains ads (but ad blocking can take care if that) , however the paid version can check much more frequently and also comes with homescreen Widgets.
I'd definitely recommend giving the free version a try

P.S - it also does pretty much everything the official app does, apart from chat, and does it just as well.

actually, my htc hero had (with the official facebook app) push notification?
So why this feature doesnt work on the desire?
This might be the answer (just found it on XDA-Portal)...
i'm going to try it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11572673#post11572673
Edit:
Doesnt work for my... says: some error occured
Really, try Flow.
The standard Facebook app only notifies of inbox messages, event invites and friend requests but flow notifies of comments, wall posts, likes etc as well - pretty much any notification really
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
I have a desire and it always sends me notifications about everything that happens, all status comments, friend requests, etc. If you go into the app where it show different icons to go to news feed, profile, etc. press menu then settings, set refresh interval to 30 mins (this may chew your battery but you will get updates) tick the notifications box and all the rest of the boxes.
You should receive notifications to your notifications bar now

Any one else really diggin the stock text/gmail app this time around?

besides the whole iphone bubble thing ( which im sure will be fixed with themes ), i think the stock messaging app is a winner this time around. especially the new landscape preview mode. also i dont know whats different in this gmail version but i no longer get the "ghost" emails ( when the message counter says i have unread messages but i cannot see them ) good job samsung..
I like it as well but for some reason I can't get my ip camera video attachments. I can see them on the regular gmail app but not on the stock email app. I get the email with the attachments icon but nothing shows to click to preview.

I made a mental note to try out Go SMS but I never really got around to it actually, because like you I thought the stock messaging app was pretty sweet.
i wish there some more customization like you can do on MIUI and handcent like - mini window, etc
I'm using the stock MAIL app, I prefer it to the Gmail one. The text app I replaced with Handcent.
I use the Yahoo email app, works great.

I Use the yahoo email app for my yahoo mail.. I use the built in gmail app for my 3 gmail accnts
Tapatalkin' it from my Epic Touch 3g
I'm trying to use the stock email app isntead of downloading the yahoo mail app and using the gmail app.
I like that I can set the background to black with white text.
My only issue is that I'm not liking the lack of push notifications.
I can set it to check every 15 minutes with an notification on my status bar...
That seems almost better than push? (As far as it not sitting there nonstop checking for mail). Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I'm really digging the little animation where the text slides over to the pane, and I also love the window view in landscape. The next SMS app is one of my favorite "tweaks," on the device.
The stock SMS application is good, but the iPhone-style bubbles are ugly, and not having the option to change them or their colors is terrible.
With that being said, the worst part of the stock SMS application is the over-compression of MMS photos. Sending photos to friends is an embarrassing affair. Your 8MP photos get compressed to usually between 25KB to 50KB, at the smallest resolution ever. I'm all for saving network throughput, but come on. People on larger resolution devices (iPhone 4) can't see anything. Disappointing.

It's my guess Sprint is the one to blame with over compression of MMS. I had this exact same problem with my HTC EVO 4G.
I broadcast texts to about 30 people on a regular basis and the built-in SMS client won't send to more than 10 people at once no matter how big the group is so I can't use it. Wish I could fix that - I'd rather use the built-in app so it would work with the lock screen. Or it would be nice if you could make other email/SMS clients work with the lock screen.
I like both stock apps looks good and functions well.

Just pull the CM7 messaging app from a rom and slap in the system folder and change permissions Then reboot.

Alternate email client

Can anyone suggest an alternate email client? I would lie it to do everything the stock one does but with one difference, I would like to move to the next email without returning to the inbox, i.e I am in the body of a message, I have read it and there is an arrow or something that allows me to move straight to the next or previous message, sorry for poor explanation but hopefully you know what I mean!
You can quickly switch between messages the way you describe with K9 mail (I can't post a link -- but google or a play store search for "K9 mail" will find it)
You can do the same too with the ICS Stock email client. That one was one of the best improved applications on ICS and I use that on my H1X along with the 4x4 widget to display emails on one of my home screens.
app called Touchdown
I'm using Touchdown and it works just great for me...

+1 for stock ICS. My only issue remains that the widget "freezes" / doesn't update immediately [this is an issue with ICS or the app, not the H1X]
Another +1 for Touchdown, while reading a message there are options to go to the next or previous email
Enhanced email works really well. I got mine free on the amazon daily promo a while back. It's more or less stock ics email with exchange security settings being configurable.

Thanks for the responses, I will try the stock ics
+1 for K9 mail
however, this is possible in stock sense email app too... you must uncheck "threaded view" option in general settings first, then you can see "next mail" and "previous mail" options in settings when you are viewing any email (three dots options button on upper right corner) in normal view. I know, it is almost same thing with 'back' then tap on next item in threaded view as well, and shame there is no swiping possibility either, hope HTC put this feature in coming updates.
Cheers!
Only thing that puts me off k9 is the pure white with no option for a dark look!
I have emailed the dev but yet to receive a response!

Go to Global settings --> Display and select Dark option in Theme, restart the app by existing K9 and dark theme will be applied when you open K9 again.
Whenever I get emails with images in it, like emails from ATT, Target, GAP etc, the email is showing up as if being viewed in a computer, I mean i can only see a part of it in Gmail, so I have to manually resize the email so that it fits in my phone display. This is kind of an annoyance since coming from iPhone where the email with images would get resized to fit the iphone display. Just wondering if there is any email client that work like the one on the iphone ?

Kaiten
I am using KAITEN for a long time, on my third device now. I was always happy with it.
Not free, but worth the money.
I have a question about k9. I have 3 email accounts on stock email app. 2 of which i have currently set to push so within seconds i have my new email. 1 of which i use to sign up for things and email certain companies ( that i don't need to get instant contact ) and this would be daft using up my mobile data on! I have found that as soon as i set up the accounts they are immediately on push. Even tho there is an update folders option set to never!?
Would someone be able to explain how i would set my third account to be manual- ie i will have to press sync to fetch new mail.
Best
Jr
press accounts and sync settings.......
There is no accounts and sync within k9
To reiterate i would like two accounts to be pushed to my device and one to be manual when i go into it and select "retrieve mail"
Is this possible with k9?

Long press the account, account settings, sync folders, set poll frequency to never and push folders to none.

Thanks for the help but i managed to get one account set to manual but it wasn't the one i wanted and i couldn't get it to push without recreating. This is one confusingly laid out app with its settings.
The beauty of the stock app is you can set to push and even set an on and off peak schedule and define how the app pulls in emails in those periods. Unfortunately the schedule in ics is broken which is why i was seeking an alternative.

[Q] New mails don't appear in the Lock Screen

Hi. I am very satisfied with my HTC ONE X. There is just one thing bothering me: It seems to be impossible to display the new arriving mails on my Lock Screen (Productivity). Missed calls, new text messages and my calendar events are no problem, but there is now way to get the new mails on that screen. The settings are correct, but I still don't unsterstand why it doesn't work....
Waiting for HTC support is like hoping for Jesus to appear in front of you ...
By the way, I am using the official Gmail App for my mailing. I also read in another forum that the HTC guys are not to blame: The problem would be coming from Google...
So, what shall I do, did I miss something ?
Does anyone have an idea to help me out, would be highly appreciated !

Are you using a third party launcher? I have found that the Rosie launcher needs to be running in memory for the mail notification to update on the lock screen. It doesn't however have to be your primary launcher. Just create a shortcut to it and launch it whenever the notification icons stop updating. I haven't taken the time to figure out if Android kills the launcher from memory or not during use.
If you go to settings > personalise > lock screen style then go to the productivity option and select settings if you go to the 'display mail from' option it will only allow you to select the accounts you have in the default mail app.
This is slightly odd though as the calendar display options allow you to display calendar items from many more sources that you have already configured (Facebook, Google etc.)
Just for clarification, I have a fully stock HOX.
Thank you for your replies guys. It has strictly nothing to do with thirdpard launchers, or with the settings. It simply doesn't work because it is not the default mail program I am using. Sad but true...

I recently figured that out as well it won't show official Gmail app emails, you need to configure your gmail account into HTCs mail app which is not too bad for Gmail saying that.
