Do I need to be rooted to use this custom rom? If not what do I need to do?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

Yes you need to be rooted to install any rom or custom recovery.

OK thank you. I rooted my previous phone and when I did. I had nothing but problems it seemed like.. but that was probably 3 years ago or so..

Since you had to ask if you needed root to flash a custom ROM they were almost certainly User caused. But to each their own.

Do you still need to use a computer and all that too root your phone? And I'm running 4.1.1 is that going to screw me at all?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

Scratch that definitely User error.
There are stickies right at the top of this very section on how to root.

if your bootloader is unlocked you could flash twrp using goo manager and download the supersu zip.. then flash that in twrp to root

Do NOT use the QCOM Toolkit to Root the AT&T JB release!

If you try to root using the method in the toolkit it will screw up the phone and you will have to revert to stock using Odin. The phone will try to boot up but when it reaches the AT&T logo it will go black and the notification light will shine blue forever until you reboot.
If you did try to root using the QCOM Toolkit and you hit this snag use these links to revert back to stock/JB stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2031840 ------ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
I tried rooting the new JB release using qcom and when I try to do as you stated odin just hangs at setup connection. Any ideas how to get around this?

Same here on Bell. And I didn't even have to factory reset coming from Serenity 1.2
I was running aokp for last 7 months and wanted too return to stock to try stock att 4.1 jb update this is what I did .first I have to say that I used root66 and although it worked I was seeing a few little issues. My camera was very dark looking and colors seem to be washed looking and also sound was low. I didnt really notice it much but from what I could remember my phone when I first got it was fine. So what I did was downloaded official jb from the sammy site and. Again re wiped my phone again and flashed with Odin stock rom. And wow what a difference I had forgotten what iI was like to have everthing work perfectly on my phone ..dont no why people hate tw so much..I rooted this time my self. And decided to stay stock for a while till 4.2 get all the bugs worked out..in all stock is running awesome great batterylife super smooth never a fc at all super fast camera and so on..good job. If you want perfect stock is great..

[Q] Downgraded from 4.3 back to 4.1.1 and now I'm bricked

Last night I downgraded my phone from 4.3 back to 4.1.1 and it worked fine. So after the 4.1.2 OTA update started and my phone rebooted. Since then it has been stuck at the Samsung Galaxy Note II screen and will only boot into download mode. Does anyone know any way to force it into recovery mode.
What model? I317m or i317?

unfortunately due to you being on official its a one way street. LOCKED bootloader, there is no downgrading. Now i believe I read on the s3 forums that if you can reflash the current official bootloader and rom you 'might' be able to boot, suck part is I dont think anybody has posted it yet.

No, I'm not trolling. Nothing to troll for. If there are issues with this downgrade on the OTA 4.3, I highly recommend following Milkman00's advise.
I think there is some confusion here.
I was on the stock 4.3 and tried using ODIN to undo the bootloader. It didn't work. Not only did it not work, but it rendered my phone unusable. It claims that there is a firmware problem and to use Kies to restore the firmware, which cannot be done currently as the latest firmware in Kies is <4.3.
DO NOT USE THAT METHOD. Long story short is that I now have a Note 3 because I broke my Note 2. :/

4.4 ROM Flashing difficulties

Hello, I have been trying to flash a 4.4 ROM on my Optimus G for the longest. I am currently running a 4.3 but can't a stable one as well. Every time I try to flash a 4.4 TWRP almost instantly says fail every time even though it is the most updated version, does anyone know why this is?

You have to use a KK recovery. CWM or TWRP will be marked as working for KK. KK being 4.4

Look for octhrope's flashable zip in the TWRP thread. It's marked as working for KK. It'll have the same numbers but modified for Kk.

Well, if you have the right TWRP, and are wiping /system, /data, /cache, /dalvic, I'd say bad dl , or your SD might be messed up.
That's the only reasons I can think of.

See if you can flash a stock ROM. Also, reinstall recovery. DL the one from Shelnutt2 on the codefire server. There's also a link for it in the root guide.
After reinstalling recovery, and if it'll install a stock ROM, try a 4.4 rom again. If it still fails, I'd say try wiping your SD.
Other than that, I'm at a loss.

[Q] Can you Upgrade to 4.4 if your rooted with no recovery?

My girlfriend has an AT&T Note 2 running 4.1.2 that is rooted, but with no custom recovery.
Is there a way to get the update.zip put it on the root of the SD card and upgrade through the stock bootloader?
She doesn't want to start from scratch, just upgrade. Doesn't really matter if she loses root or not.

If you used CF auto root to gain the original root...then you have a modified stock recovery and OTA will fail...
You would need to push a stock image via Odin to restore the device to stock I believe...g
