[Q] Need some help - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I am not sure if this is the appropriate section to post this.
I am deciding between buying Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy Note 2.
I dont have a smart phone, but i need one badly. Most of my work is university related, emails, pdf , notes, ebooks. I dont have a laptop nor tablet. But I do have a power house desktop lol.
I am with mobilicity, so I prefer penta band phones or at least quadband phones for UMTS frequencies.
I really like Galaxy note 2, but the software support makes me think otherwise and also the size of it. I can grip the Gnote 2 in one palm of my hand, so that isnt much of a issue i guess.
Galaxy Nexus has the great software support from google directly! But this phone is really out dated and i have to pay $372 with tax to get it brand new. I am not much of a used phone guy anymore, too many bad experiences.
Any suggestion would be appreciated, thanks!

Outdated?
Go for the Note 2 then, you already decided.
Since you are using it for work related stuff, you don't need the latest android imo, the bigger screen on the Note will help in reading all that documents too..

well isn't it outdated? I am looking at it from the perspective that its 1 year old or more though. I won't be constantly doing work, but you know here and there sort of work.
Problem would be carrying it around though.
Thanks for your input though

My Thoughts
I use the Galaxy nexus for work constantly! I am an IT manager and need the email and document functionality as well. I haven't had an issue with this! Everything has worked great for the past year. I like the nexus also because I play with the developing and flashing piece of it.
The nexus is still a great phone! I will be using it happily for the next year! The developer community alone is worth it to me.
with that said, If I was mostly looking at email, documents, and notes I would go with the Note II. The reason for that is the screen size. I also like the idea of having a stylus for writing and notes. I find it hard to take notes with a third party stylus on the nexus, so I would choose the dedicated stylus that Samsung has created. I have tested it and find it very useful and practical for note taking. The hardware is also quite nice on the note II.
That's my 2 cents...

GSM Galaxy Nexus going on eBay - Galaxy Note en route

I've thoroughly enjoyed my short ownership of this device, but after the OMG nature of ICS wore off, it's really just an average phone.
I've ordered a Galaxy Note and will be here Monday. Despite touchwiz, slow updates, blabla, the Note just seems like an incredible device that can finally allow me to leave my laptop behind.
Not trolling, just posting as others may find interest in the Note once the newness of the Nexus wears off.
If you are interested in buying direct, PM me. I will be very fair on the price if it's done outside of eBay's ridiculous fees. Steinheil protector + spare, case and absolutely mint with everything.
No, this isn't an ad for my phone. It's jut a post that's intended to generate discussion on the comparison.
To be honest I would have purchased a note also, but it won't work with T-Mobile 3g. I love my nexus though, and the development on here will make it truely remarkable

I came from a note and got the nexus and I don't regret returning the note at all. The note had very bad color banding or at least mine did. Also videos were horrible due to a halo effect that would show up in a white background. I hope it was just my unit but it seems like many were having the same issue as I did. The only thing I liked much more about the note was the battery life. Would last me sometimes 3 days! Nexus doesn't even come close...

i just did the opposite! i bought a gsm note to use on ATT but it had several issues. had problems with the capacitive touch buttons not working after phone calls. the phone would also shut it self off randomly. i returned it because of those problems. if it wasnt for that it was a really cool phone. the extra screen real estate was nice for games and web sites.
I'm not saying this because I have a Nexus, but I find it hard to understand how you find it just an average phone. The camera is about the only average thing about it, everything else runs so well in ICS which makes the experience as a whole so much more coherent.
The only thing I'd really wish for at the moment would be an LTE version for GSM carriers.

Yeah, I considered that, but ATT will drop the legendary Exoynos processor because it isn't compatible with LTE.
That and who knows how ATT will handle grandfathered unlimited plans that try to go to LTE. I simply don't trust them to let me keep it.
6mbps is plenty fast since I don't tether.
to each their own but please list a few phones that you consider above average

Hello better phone with ICS in the pipeline? Wacom digitizer and all.
Different strokes, I guess. I've owned the Nexus One, Nexus S, SGSII, EVO. Pure google, while nice, ends up being modded to hell anyway by most, so it's not an issue for me personally. I don't like touchwiz, but that's fixable with launchers.
If the Note was going to be on Verizon I would have thought about it. If it gets a CM9 port then it could be a killer phone. My brother-in-law imported one for his AT&T line and I got to play with it. VERYYY NICE.

I have nothing to prove to anyone. Just think the 2500 mAh battery, wacom digitizer and real-estate of the Note are worthy advantages.
Not going to launch into an I'VE FOUND THE JESUS PHONE debate. Most all modern phones are pretty close in performance/features anyway.
Just my preference. The Nexus is a great device, but not the absolute best ever. If it didn't have ICS, this forum would be lit up with endless *****ing.

You shouldn't need to make a thread to justify your decision. Cool, you're going to the Galaxy Note, good luck. The Galaxy Nexus forum will continue the way it is without you.
If you didn't want a debate about Galaxy Nexus vs. Galaxy Note, then just post up your ad in the marketplace and be on your way. Simple as that.
This is a thread for discussion, not spam.
It's basically sold already, but thanks for the slap.
By the way, its not an ad. I simply mentioned it's available if anyone was interested, which several are so far.
An ad is a thread with the sole purpose of selling an item. This thread is not. Feel free to add to the discussion.
What are your thoughts on the Note vs. the Nexus?
Ok, so I feel that I've ruffled feathers. Will a mod please move this to the for sale forum so I can be a good senior member like I have been since 2006?
That way, XDA homeostasis is reached for all.
Thanks.
There are rumors that the Note is coming to ATT early next year with LTE. Nice, right? Except there is one problem...
They are replacing the Exynos with a Snapdragon S3.
They also had to do this with the Galaxy S2 on T-Mobile because the Exynos chipset apparently has problems playing nicely with high speed networks such as LTE and T-Mobiles 42 Mbps HSPA+ network.
Will make it exceptionally difficult to dev for. And since it's basically a different device with a different SoC, kiss frequent and timely updates goodbye.
If the Note appeals to you, go for it. Just saying, aside from the bigger screen, a S3-verison Note doesn't seem to have any huge advantage over the Nexus.
I've had both. The note is a great device, but IMO the GN is better overall.
I would of gotten a Note instead if it supported t-mobile, sigh.
I'm hoping by the time Note II comes out, samsung will have resolved the shortcomings of exynos' radios as well as samoled+ HD. I will jump all over that.

Aren't you going from a big phone to an even bigger phone? That would drive me crazy plus the stylus is for the 80's.
But honestly? I've been tempted myself. The Note have NFC?
dont you think that note is jut too big? i never got note in my hands, but by comparassions videos on youtube (everything vs note) i get a little scared about how big it is...
also, why do you guys need so fast network for a phone?! 6mb is not good enough? what are you doing that need so high speed? video calling?!

This argument is so old.
People on sprint/verizon don't get 6mbps. It's 1mbps or 4G, which do you think people would obviously prefer (barring battery issues)

Note 2 clone info...

I found this phone on this website...
http://www.chinaecarts.com/samsung-...-core-android-41-ram-2gb-rom-16gb-p-2802.html
But I'm not sure if it'll be what I'm expecting. I want a note 2 but don't really wanna pay a whole lot for since I'm gonna buy out right but at the same time I want one with the same specs as the original and be able to use cases that the original note 2 uses. I also want to customize the phone with custom roms as well. Does anyone know if this can be done with this clone?
Thanks!
And if there's any more info someone can share with me or an even better clone out there plz let me know...

Why would you expect support from a company that admittedly sells counterfeit products? And why would you support them?
My opinion, stay away, far away from it.
Sent from my GS3
So basically you want to have the same specs, dev support and the whole package, with a cheapo clone? Read that again and see if that makes any sense at all.
If there is such a thing, why would we all pay 600$ and buy the original at all?
Well first off its just a question on whether or not the phone could do it. Secondly, I would pay the $600 when I have the money...I'm just looking for more inexpensive options. With today's crappy economy you can't blame anyone for looking for alternative options in things they want.

Living in China I bought some of these devices but you have to understand these devices are for LOOK. They LOOK like the original(if you're not to close lol) but the hardware is very different. They often perform surprisingly well but their camera are always crap.
Of course since the hardware is very different you can't come on the Note II forum to get help because your phone is NOT a Note II, it only looks like one.
Finally buying a clone is not an alternative of what you want. If you want a Note II, an alternative would be to buy a second hand, then you get what you want at a cheaper price. But buying a clone is like wanting a Ferrari but buying Go-Kart.
There is nothing wrong with having a clone, but the fact that you are expecting "almost" genuine product support is more than exaggerated don't you think?
Before we extend this thread with negative answers ppl will continue to give you, you should realize that a clone runs perhaps a very different type of hardware meaning the custom roms will never ever support. You could try them of course, but do not be surprised if your screen will never come back on, camera not working, mic, touchscreen failure etc.
DITTO with everyone here! I would just delay your purchase until you have money for your, "Want" as you stated.
To be honest, owning a Note II is a personal choice, and there are 25+ other phones that have similar functions that I would purchase before I got ANY clone. Keep in mind, support? Drivers? apps? insurance? warranty?
I agree with majority. (And if you wait on release of Note III, Note II will come down in price)
NOTE: I (or we) and not trying to talk negatively about you, just member love! There are therads, plenty of them, where members got ripped off on aftermarket clones (SanDisk Chips are big rip off from 2nd and 3rd party vendors. I have been following that big here as Note II can handle 64GB as I have).

Death of the Stylus? Note 7 axed.

As many are hearing, the Note 7 production has stopped. Reports of the line being axed have surfaced and trending on major news site, the BBC has this to say:
Samsung said it has stopped making Galaxy Note 7 smartphones due to consumer safety concerns.
The company is expected to permanently end selling the device, a person familiar with the matter said.
Samsung did not comment further.
Assuming the Note 7 is indeed axed, what do you think this means for the Stylus?
My opinion is that Samsung will steer clear of anything Noteesque for quite some time, size aside, something that makes a Note is of course the Stylus, is it likely to die with Samsung? Interested to hear your thoughts...
They will already be too invested in note 8 to kill it as well. They have already gotten patents for components in it, and expected release as early as 3/2017.
Problem is, the Note 4 (only second hand) and 5 (only grey import) also aren't available anymore, so if my Note 3 would die now, I have nothing to replace it with.
I don't agree that they will stay away from the Note platform. That would be handing lots of sales over to other makers, as I'm sure many stick with Samsung for the stylus in a Note sized product. I do hope the next one is a polished, finished product, though.
Would you agree that many buy the Note 7 regardless of the Stylus? I appreciate many buy for the feature, but I have seen so many people on XDA saying they can switch easily to a different device because they simply bought the Note 7 for the spec.
If those same people are a large part of the user base (Samsung would know I guess by Stylus usage statistics perhaps?) then launching a larger than the S7 Edge device under a different name could bode well for them?
It could be that nearly all Note users buy for the stylus, I'm just putting it out there.
I have no idea on how many don't use the stylus. Certainly if someone does not use it, it'd be easy to make different choices. But I don't really see the stylus as the issue here. It's the battery.
What to do now? S7E - don't rly like it after touching the NOTE7. Wait for S8 is too long for me. I still use S4 that is dead (at least battery is new) lol. Other brands don't have good camera like N7 or S7E... Not to start talking about accessorys i bought for N7....

They used that stylus-statistic to slide the S6Edge+ down our throats and not bring the Note 5 to Europe. The S6E+ tanked and is now being sold with 200+ euro discounts to get rid of excisting stocks.
The Note series is the only phone with stylus. You have nowhere else to go. So switching now is an option, since there are zero new stylus phones on the market at the moment.
I hope they do not kill the stylus.
I love the stylus specially when i am at college.
It allows me to write notes or draw sketches and memes and i am arch student. To me a phone without a stylus looks awkard.. They propably will change name of the note brand by next year or dit h the stylus i hope the later does not happen.

Still on Note 4. I think that I have used the stylus once. I keep forgetting it's even there. I bought the Note 4 because it is a good, large, solid phone with a big screen and a REMOVABLE BATTERY. That's the reason that I never went to the Note 5 or Note 7. There are two Note 4s in my family that are just under two years old. I've already had to replace the battery in one because of it not holding a charge, boot loops, etc. To me, the Note 7 was the best of the sealed phones and the only one that I would even bother considering.
What? you thought that for years, people bought a Note just because it has a slightly bigger screen than the S series?
The stylus IS the Note. It's the reason why Samsung had 2 Flagship phones instead of 1. Dude, the Stylus is here to stay, period.

I don't think they'll let it die. Let some time pass, bring it out again and maybe even find a new name for it, that's it.
People forget fast anyway, you can watch that in politics every day...
What do you think would happen if that problem arose with a Galaxy S phone? No galaxies any more?
TL;DR: Samsung is a monstrosity of a company. It's for sure a big inconvenience for them, but it won't break their neck and influence them too much.
Think of what would happen if that same thing happened to LG...
And you can be quite sure that all future Samsung phones will be non-exploding a f

Sure enough they are available... Idk how much they are gonna charge me though. For me to upgrade early to the note 7 they made me spend 200 and send in my s6. They are probably gonna make me pay the tax and put $100 down so it barely increases my monthly bill.. Any advice?

In an effort to cope (Download links updated)

Update 20161024: My apologies! I have updated the OP with links that do not require decryption keys.
So, I am one of the poor souls that waited, impatiently, for the Note 7's release. Reading all of the rumors and leaks along the way, that flagship went from the Note 6 with dual cameras and the ability to cook you breakfast to the Note 7 with one camera and if you had the battery issue, could possibly cook your pants.
Still, I owned the first and second iteration. Even after Samsung announced they were done, I still had hope. The beautiful curve of the screen (less prone to accidental touches), the waterproof S-Pen with it's fine tip, the massive, over saturated screen that I have come to love about Samsung and the knowledge that I had the phone that I wanted, without settling.
Alas, I recently turned in my Note 7. I considered the Pixel XL but the ship date has said 6-8 weeks for approximately 6-8 weeks. I looked at the LG V20 the first to use band 66... Although I don't know how good, reliable or available that is. But 1. It's LG and 2. Unreleased, untested and unloaded with Samsung Pay (which is something I love) Quick side note, every time I have used SP for the first time with a different phone during this whole process, I have been gifted the $10 initial purchase gift card, I'm at $50 in first time uses as of now. I ordered the Note 5 but could not handle the lack of external memory and somehow the thought of it not being ip68 bothered me...
Now I'm here with the S7 Edge again. Trying to cope with my loss. In an effort to make things a little better I have searched around. Because I use SP, I don't root anymore (well played Samsung) but I have found some APKs that help, even just a little...
Samsung Notes, the new and improved note-taking suit introduced on the Note 7 can be found below. I find it stupid to write with my finger but it gives me access to the things I wrote when I was happy, before the tragedy:

Install both as a normal APK.
*Just to clarify, I didn't create these APKs, I found them*
If anyone had found any other coping mechanisms, please share. We have to stick together and hope that the Note series won't suffer the same fiery fate as it's latest addition.

Galaxy Labs adds the option to your Advanced Features menu and allows you to test some of Samsung's latest and greatest ideas:
https://mega.nz/#!hkxxVARS
Install both as a normal APK.
*Just to clarify, I didn't create these APKs, I found them*
If anyone had found any other coping mechanisms, please share. We have to stick together and hope that the Note series won't suffer the same fiery fate as it's latest addition.

May I ask where you "found" these apk's?
I won't be rooting either because of SP and frankly there really isn't a need to root.
Found this thread with some N7 feature downloads:

The Samsung Notes I "found" among the APKs I extracted before I turned my Note 7 in. The Galaxy Labs I "found" on my Mega from before I got my first Note 7 and don't remember, hence the ambiguous "found".

Update 20161024: My apologies! I have updated the OP with links that do not require decryption keys.
So, I am one of the poor souls that waited, impatiently, for the Note 7's release. Have you found a way to draw on screen shots, after you take them.... Similar to screen write on the Note 7....that's the thing i am going to miss the most.

While it's a few more steps you can still draw on screenshots. After you take the screenshot open it with Gallery then click the edit icon the bottom, then click the drawing icon.

Like the post above mine says, it's a couple more steps but here's a shortcut on his method...
The notification that pops up when you take a screen shot has "edit" as an option... Select that, then "Photo Editor" and at the bottom "draw" is an option.
I feel you on that though. And it's just not the same without the pen

Accessories Struggling to make the switch to my P6P due to lack of stylus.

Hi all!
I'm very new here although I used to frequent XDA many years ago when I was all about that root/custom ROM life on my older devices.
I've been using a Galaxy Note 9 for the last 3 years and it has served my very well, mainly due to the stylus. Whilst the addition of a stylus doesn't appeal to most (I think), it is an accessory that is something I use every day and kinda have to.
I have a condition (localised in my hands) called hyperhidrosis. To summarise what this is: my hands sweat like nobody's business, no matter the weather/climate. And it's not just clammy either. My hands quite literally pour, lol.
Anyway, if any of you have ever had a splash of water on your device screen, you will understand how frustrating it can be when trying to type or browse or anything. Now imagine that, all day every day.
So the stylus was my saviour.
But now I have this brand new, shiny device that doesn't have one and, having used this thing for less than a month, I have had enough and ended up going back to my Note 9 until I can figure out a solution.
Does anyone know if Google or any third party company have released or will be releasing such an accessory?
I see a lot of users complaining about the in-screen FPR and there's me like "bro...", haha.
Anyway, thanks for reading this post. There isn't a cure or permanent fix for my hands so I'm stuck with them forever.
I'm now wondering if I should sell this handset and get a Note 20 or something, idk.
You can use generic stylus like this: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08LMWYWFM
It works on regular capacitive screens. It doesn't do cool things like the stylus Notes can do.

I think you already answered your own question.
Even if you are happy with 3rd party hardware and 3rd party software to go with it (highly unlikely given your story). you'll constantly be worried about keeping the stylus with the P6P and vice-versa.
Rumour has it that there won't be another Note, but that the next S22 series will have a model with Note features.
If you are dependent on a stylus then I would stick with a phone which has native support for one personally. Either an existing model Note or see if the S22 Ultra has an S pen as rumoured. Doesn't sound like the Pixel is the right phone for you unfortunately.
If you have a medical condition that makes a decent stylus with good functionality a life saver, you should either go for the last year Note model, or wait for the S22 Ultra that has (rumored) official stylus support/casing (prob January/February).
Google never cared for a stylus, so you will just have very basic functionality, that's not what you are looking for.
Pixel 6 is not for you.
I am in same boat as your are, A NOTE 9 user for 3 yrs, its getting hard to live without s pen. its not just stylus but give great amount of feature mostly use one is copy a simple text from anywhere, use it as camera remote and many other feature. and I am waiting for S22 Ultra as I am not that happy with P6P, no doubt P6P is great device.
How about this one ? . . . It got 4.8 stars !

Seems about as good as it gets!
There is no device on the market that compares to Samsung Note series
And I know exactly how you feel about the pen And I know when you think about switching the phone, you feel very hesitant. In short, it is a series of note. You can do things that no other phone can do like copying things that don't get copied
If you are thinking of switching you have to get used to not having a pen. Good luck
Thank you all for your input. Much appreciated!
Samsung and Apple have some particular copyrights which keep all other styluses from having some of the nicest features theirs do. It's unfortunate, and we'll miss having a stylus for the short period of time my wife and I had Note 10+'s, but it's worth it to me for how the l Android works on the Pixel versus Samsung, such as reliable notifications off my work emails and other things.
