The OS isn't always the reason for battery drain, many factors take into play.
How often you use the device.
Applications like widgets, email push.
Wi-Fi. If your not on it shut it down it else is always going to try to find a signal and drain battery.
Bluetooth. same with this.
Using the net.
Things like Google now, it's always running and trying to update info, shut it off of make intervals longer.
These are just some things to take into account, but at all use the phone different, and im not saying the OS doesn't drain but it solely isn't the only reason.
Hope this help.

I seem to be having the same problem. ..

Same here. With sync turned off, google now turned off, and most everything else that eats battery...
In the battery setting is shows that media is eating at least 25% battery.

I'm having the same issue. I read that the media drain could be caused by bad media files, but I didn't have any issues before this weird.

In my experience when you first update to a new samsung rom, the media using the battery is your phone updating the picasa albums...which stinks because it also eats your data like crazy if you are not on wifi and forget to turn off sync until wifi is available.

I've noticed faster than normal battery drain as well on my device. Normally by 4:30pm I'd be at 40-50%. Now I'm in the 20-30% range.
I'm going to try factory defaulting it soon and run it for a day or two. OR I might not even do that and just go directly to Task's AOKP or CM10.

I am going to flash to tasks tonight, not fond of what I've been reading about cm10.
But guys remember we all use our phones differently, take into account apps, usage, ect
Some days my battery lasts a bit longer than normal but I want using it as much.

i dont have any issues with battery drain, but i would suggest a full restore after upgrade. dont restore using titanium, just install through playstore. then report back but i doubt it will be an issue

Before everyone jumps ship, may want to try a new kernel. KT and a few others should work on the new release. Just make sure you choose one that works on JB TW and not ASOP.

I have the same problem.. After JB update there is huge battery drain. With average usage it drains almost 100%. Before update with heavy usage I was going through the day.
Maybe I should try KT kernel I don't know. I wiped all after updated, nothing saved from ICS.

Same here,
It's seem the culprit is the android.process.media.
Each time i bootup,android.process.media is running for about 30 min, non-stop.
I already do a factory reset+sd formatting, but no succes.
With startup manager, i can block that process, but you need to be rooted .

I use the same settings as before i did'nt upgrade yet..i got it fully charge with no texting and calls the next 1hr its already 80%..i think i would try to cycle first my battery for 2 more days..then i'll see if it still have heavy drains..thanks for the response guyss.

Check out my overnight drian! from 1:30 to 10 the average drain is around 4% an hour, Losing about 20% overnight doing nothing.

I just got this phone the other day and immediately updated to jelly bean.Though I have nothing to compare it to my battery drain seems normal. I'm losing about 5% an hour but that is with some use (it's new so I'm playing with it a lot).
I did notice more drain the first day of use (may have been because I was using it a lot) and noticed maps was taking up quite a bit of the battery and I wasn't using it. So I uninstalled the updates for Maps and then re installed it. Battery drain seemed much better after that and now the maps app doesn't even show up in the battery report(before it was about 3rd and it seems kinda high on yours as well though you may be using it).

i'm noticing about the same battery consumption as the stock ICS rom. about 1~2% per hour when idle and sitting, 2~5% per hour listening to music over bluetooth with the screen off, and 5~10% per hour surfing the net and watching videos and stuff.

Well after doing probably 5 resets on my phone , it seems like everything is working fine . I was having issues with the battery drain ,internet not connecting, and phone calls taking 2 minutes to connect.

I was having issues with high battery usage as well after updating to JB.
I froze most every app and widget associated with AT&T and Samsung (with the exception of AllShare) and flashed KT747 kernel and set governor to ktoonservative (default settings).
I am really never a heavy user during the day, but with the same usage I had on ICS, I average 15.5 hours (with the phone at approx 15% when I shut it off to charge) - screen on time between 2.5 and 3 hours; call time between 45 min and 1.5 hrs; media (which seems to be a big battery hog) only about 6 minutes. I use bluetooth exclusively, so that radio is on all the time the phone is on. I keep sync and background data on, but only turn mobile data on as needed.

stock 2.1 idle drain

So...I'm using 2.1 and for some reason when I'm not even using the phoone..the battery drain is ridiculous. Since I'm new to 2.1, does anyone know what is causing this? Any processes I need to end? Any thing I need to remove?
I'm straight up rooted stock 2.1. No custom roms, just a custom kernel. I only downloaded Pandora, Wordfeud and SetCPU.
Edit: I also wanna add that I leave on 4G as well and I see it idle out and when I turn it off and leave it off I still experience the same amount of drain so I dont think its 4G.
And for more details on the drain...I went to sleep for about 3 hours and during that time I went from 91 to 42.
Edit2: Im gonna actually see if maybe it was just the kernel...I was using the first version of a kernel, not its latest version so Im going to put on the latest. But still, Id liike to know if it was a common problem and how most people fixed it.
Kill the omadrm process with each phone reboot. (Forgot exact name, but that is close) If you aren't always in a 4g area, having that radio always on will drain the battery.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Edit: Also double check your phone standby time and see what percentage your Time Without Signal (TWS) is at. Toggle Airplane mode after each reboot will correct that bug.
Also fyi you can use Tasker to toggle airplane mode for you automatically every boot

It you can just.install spare parts and.look. also check your time without signal. If you don't reset your radio its prolly 50%. Whether.that is.cosmetic or actually does cause a battery drain its still good to do.

Battery life even with removing a few apps is pretty bad.
I think the most I got after a week of tests was about 18 hours and that was with almost no use.
Try downloading JuiceDefender from the market. It's free. What it does really is enable/disable your 3G/4G/WiFi connection when your phone is not in use. It also enables it every 15 minutes (default setting) to get email other updates such as weather. I am not kidding when I say went from an 18 hours to 72 hours hours. Granted, that was with little use.
Can download JuicePlotter as well to get an idea of how your battery is dropping and holding.
Side note that WordFeud constantly runs in the background, so that WILL rape your battery. JuiceDefender will keep it in check. Best app I ever got.
For reference, under 2.1 with JuiceDefender I would lose only about 1%/hour at night when I was sleeping.
Under 2.2 it's more like 2% per hour >.> and I've yet to figure out what's draining it.
I thought I'd chime in since the OP mentioned Pandora. After installing Pandora I noticed my battery drain had gotten significantly worse even when properly quitting out of the app. After uninstalling Pandora battery drain has normalized to the way it was before.
Also, setting your network to sprint only helps with battery too.

maybe where you live it does, but thats an awful idea if you are in a town with little service because it will spend more time searching for service because it can't roam (i live in the middle of nowhere in new hampshire).
instead try to update your PRL. download the SDX stock app removal apk. remove the drm crap. and reboot. then charge your phone all the way, reboot into cwm, and reset your battery stats. then let the battery drain all the way and recharge. that should improve it significantly. thats what i did and it worked pretty damn well. battery life is upwards of 36 hours nominal charge now. and my phone used to drain battery WHILE i was charging it if i used it at all. and that was with a 1 Amp charger. also dont let your battery overcharge, mine seems to drain easier when i leave it plugged in all night.

[Q] Gingerbread huge battery drain

This seems strange.Yesterday after upgrading to gingerbread ( with the RUU because the OTA didn't work for me) I got a huge battery drain.Over the night I got a loose of 40% and now only 3 hours after unplugged and lost 20%.
I only took a few pictures and a phone call.
Only few apps installed since i got this rom since only yesterday.
Anybody experienced this and is there a fix?
Hello,
I can confirm this.
I have also a high battery drain with ALL Android 2.3.* ROMs.
I use the recommend Radio for each ROM and I've checked the RIL to be sure the Radio is correct. But doesn't matter, current in StandBy is between 30 and 50mA.
Only if I turn off WLAN and Mobile Intenet, then I have normal values between 3 and 5mA.
With FroYo I can leave WLAN and Mobile Internet enabled and I had 3-5mA in StandBy
It could not be an application, because I've tried this with a fresh install without Google account to avoid the installation of external apps.

you'd have to edit the build.prop and change the rescan time from 15 seconds to 30, 60, 90 or 120 (or whatever you perfer the rescan intercal to be at)

Try resetting the battery stats by doing the whole charge, lead out, charge, turn off, charge etc. thing.
Also, whilst not a stock RUU I did find it took a few days for the battery drain to calm down a bit. First instal lowest was around 50mA but adfter a fe days it went down to 4-5mA.

Thank you for your help
What does that value do?
Is that the rescan value of WLAN?
The current stays high even if WLAN is off and mobile internet is on.
Only if both are disabled I get a low StandBy current.

But why this problem does not exist on froyo?

Unknown. It's not 100% due to GingerBread as I've only seen a handful of people complain of this issue (relatively speaking). I see more people saying how much better their battery life is after the update than saying it's poorer.
Doesn't help I know but makes me believe that this is maybe a Network / Radio issue in that the new Radio with GB does not play well with the Network. We had this a few times on the HTC Hero.
Ok...i have airplane mode on for about 2 days.in those 2 days i almost didn't use the phone and got only a 7% lose.As soon as i used the camera(recorded around 15 min) it got down to 50% .
I will test it tonight widought airplane mode on and see the resoults. Also wifi seems to a lot of battery in comparance to froyo.

I haven't noticed these problems with CM7. I got 2.5-3 hours per 1% of drain in standby using juice defender.
If you are finding that turning off data etc is fixing the problem use juice defender. Even the free version will help a lot as it will stop your phone using data willynilly and instead turn it to a periodic sync. With the paid version you can have it stop all together during certain periods or increase doing certain periods. Aka stoping at night and extra during busy hours at work.
Should be a good fix, though it is only covering up the underlying problem still.
Can't really recommend the app enough. With it my phone only uses data when I tell it to (like opening facebook app) or periodicaly to sync and check emails etc. I do use the paid version though for the extra features.
totally agree. i have been using juice defender for about a week. its been a big help. just bought the ultimate a few min ago. going to start customizing.
sorry that i dont have any data yet to back up my statement. maybe in a future post.

im using Leedroid 3.0.3 and i dont get any such battery drain..
tbh im getting a better battery life from GB than from froyo..
on standby currentwidget shows me between 4-7ma with wifi on... with a peak once in a while..and i lose abt 1 to 1.5% per hour
with wifi off i get about 3-5ma..
i dont use mobile data much so cant really comment on that..
try calibrating your battery and try changing the scan interval in the build.prop... i normally keep it at 90...
i never used any battery saving apps, so cant comment on their performance either...
go to wifi advanced settings and untick Best Wifi Performance... that also helps a lot!
hope you get your problem sorted
Thank you all for the help
The issue was not with gingerbread...I just left my phone one night with wifi turned on and lost 40%.But still when I was on Froyo wifi wouldn't loose so much battery. Now I loose almost 2-3% every 15 min if surfing the web with wifi.
And about changing the scan interval in the build.prop...How can I do that?Do I need root?
I'm also having battery problems, but mine are a little bit different, if I'm on wifi it uses between 3 to 5% with a peak now and then. if wifi is off and I'm on 3g, it's between 5 and 500 ma and you see only peaks if you check currentwidget. anyone a clue? working on ARHD 5.1.6 now, but problem was there since version 3
I have battery problems also, my battery dries after 1 day of use. For example this morning, I unplugged my phone full from the charger at 10 am. I went into town, listened to about 20 minutes of FM radio. When i stopped the radio, I still had 98% left of the battery. OK so far. After, I talked for about 5 minutes, sent 4 messages and played for about 15 minutes. I arrived home at 2 pm with 75% of battery left. That is 25% in 4 hours.
I was on 3G, but with Mobile network off. BT, WIFI, GPS off. A few days ago, I tried running the Battery Calibration app, but seen no improvements so far. My phone is routed, 2.3.3 and has Android Revolution HD 5.0 RC1 ROM .
I expected the battery not to last for long, but this is ridiculous.
Help me, please!
I don't know if that will help, but I sometimes switch to 2G networks as HSDPA is using quite a lot the battery.
I have a DHD running 2.3.3, and it's definitely the mobile standby bit which is first in the battery use screen (33%). It was true before 2.3xx but now it's a bit more - annoying in other words.
I have to admit, having to switch to 2G networks is a bit of a pain in the *ss, so I'll check if juice defender give me some good results tomorrow and will post a feedback there.
Maybe try AR 5.1.6. + he recommended radio. It works wonders. the battery life is improved a lot...
malik
Juice Defender works very well - with basic settings I still have 35-40% of battery by 7pm.
furstrated with the battery life...
hey guys,
so this is my first post and all i've done up until now was to read... i'm afraid not real solution has come up.
i have:
Leedroid 3.1.2 with the recommended radio and i ran the script for Full Wipe 1.5 and cleared the battery stats, i did a fresh install and then didnt restore from backup - just installed everything from scratch. i hoped it would be ok, but when i woke up to check the current widget log, i saw that in the middle of the night he climbed to 150mA and stayed there draining about a 1% of battery in 3-4 minutes (!!!)
what can i do? 'where is my droid power' shows only HTC Sense at about 3.8%
please please help... thanks!

Battery life, not so great

Well, I thought the battery life on my T989D (Canadian version) would be better after installing a ROM (Darkside EVO3, Venom ROM) but after about an hour of usage (phone calls, texting, no video, no WiFi, no GPS).
I replaced it with a new battery and still it's bad.
Could it be a defective unit?
Ideas anyone?

Is this your first flash? Ive have flashed plenty of times, battery life, no matter what ROM, cannot be judged the first, second or third day of usage. Give it five days, and report back. When I used darkside, I was getting 30 hours, with moderate use. Give it time, use your battery till it dies, and charge it fully while off. You will see a difference.
On my fourth day, but I just had to reinstall the ROM..
Now I'm using my carriers ROM, done by Derek Jay.

Koooba, i just posted in another thread about battery issues, check it out here. I been running Derek's Roms since Digital Warfare and never any really issues with his Rom. i would suggest to calibrate the battery, turn off sync on all apps (Facebook is one of the worst) and keep brightness down to a 20% or whatever is comfortable for you. No joke, i get 17 hrs avg on his roms. People been known to get 24hrs+ on his roms and those are the TMo version...Telus is suppose to have be even better.

one of the ways these guys are getting such good battery life is by turning off data. that's a huge one.
btw - i'm on a D as well, and I get consistently just under 3 hours screen on time, and i charge every night. usually end with about 15% left.
it could be due to the horrible signal in some of my university buildings... or the fact that i just leave wifi on all day. but I haven't really been able to crack that barrier.
it will always take about a week for your kernel and phone to settle down.

Most battery drains are from apps constantly running in the background. Use better battery stats and gsam battery monitor and I guarantee after a day of usage, you will track down what is killing it. Widgets, auto syncing of apps and Google are the biggest culprits of battery drain.

Well, after installing GSAM and checking off the option to prolong battery life in the default settings, the battery is a bit better, but not great.
When you turn off data, do you guys turn off ALL data?
Because I have every possible option off...
syncing, GPS, bluetooth, the only data I have on is the basic network data I would think I need to receive text msgs.

Yeah I got all that off when I don't use it. If I get no signal, I put it on airplane mode. I found even if you turn off data and you are in a building with poor signal or none it kills it, even with data off. Do you use any third party apps for text, phone or anything. What launcher do you use? Facebook on manual sync, emails too?
What does app sucker say is draining?

That's crazy then, because I'm LUCKY if I can squeeze out 5-6 hours and I turn off EVERYTHING.
I even frosted GTalk through Titanium, I don't have use Facebook, so I disable that app altogether.
Something definitely has to be wrong with my phone then.
I got the battery replaced for a new one, so dunno what's going on.
Just checked out your post, not sure what badass to governor setting is...?
I just installed the Venom Kernel over the Derek's Evo updated ROM.
All syncing is off, GPS is off as well.
Has to be an issue with my phone and ICS, because it originally came with Gingerbread.

Wifi drain or just normal?

Hi,
New to the note 2, not new to being a flashaholic. Being very tame atm and only using stock rom (rooted) with no Cwm.
Strangely I get about 10% drain overnight. Got better batt app but doesn't really show much except wifi is/was on.. And this audio_out_2.
Is that normal on stock rom? On the dhd it was more like 1-2% on experimental roms

Strangely I get about 10% drain overnight. Got better batt app but doesn't really show much except wifi is/was on.. And this audio_out_2.
Is that normal on stock rom? On the dhd it was more like 1-2% on experimental roms

Disable stuff manually or use Juice Defender Ultimate (3.9.6). I use JD and never turn anything of manually.
I do have sync on. I guess what people are trying to say it's pretty standard on stock rom and I'm in need of an awesome custom rom to flash?
I used jd ages ago but configuring is a bit of a pain.. I may try it again till awesome roms comes out.

Check you applications, I have 90 apps installed and only have 0.5-0.6% per hour while sleeping with sync on.
Tonight, for example, I left wild blood downloading the last 200 mb it needed.
It took like 5 minutes, then I woke up and I noticed that it kept the device awake for 6 hours even after finishing the download, Battery went for 50 to 43% in 6 hours..
Custom roms won't make a great difference.. Maybe removing some bloatware will do, but you can stay on stock imho.

Just a question, do you, by any chance, have SIM plugged in? I observed quite higher power drain (overnight) when I did not have SIM inside.
Yeah, I have sim in at all times.. Erm apps wise, I've not added any new ones before my upgrade so I guess if there is an issue it would be some bloat apps? I tried to freeze as many as I dare using tb. (well, I followed the script of apps to delete on the other thread).
What app did you used to find what apps drained x amount per hr? That seems like a clever one

Yeah, I have similar experiences. My phone drains around 10% overnight with no apps in the background and wifi off.
So what I'm doing and it seems that it has marginally helped is:
1. Turn off Sync
2. Turn off Notifications from Email accounts as these come in all the time even overnight and the notification process and the Blue LED will drain the battery
3. Decrease screen brightness to around 40%
4. Turn on wifi only when needed
5. Disable some of the apps I don't use (Chaton, Yahoo Finance and Yahoo news, S Suggest and Samsung Store, etc)
Now I get about of 1 1/2 day of regular use.
Think I found the culprit..
Has anyone got motion feature turned on? There's that sneak wake function ticked on mine as default, I switched that off and I only got 4% drain overnight.
Perhaps others may want to give this a go and see if it helps?

4-5% per night is what I see on my GT-N7100 (intl), with Wifi on, BT off, GPS off, NFC off, Sync on.
I got Motion on though, with following features: "Tilt to zoom", "Palm swipe to capture", "Palm touch to mute/pause". I am not sure which one is supposed to be "sneak wake" one .
But now, when thinking about it, I realize I do not need any of those, so I am going to turn Motion off completely to see if it has any impact.

[Q] S3 Battery Drain after Jelly Bean

So I searched all day for an answer similar to mine and I did not see what I could do.
I was on rooted on ICS until this weekend when I updated to Jelly Bean and rooted again.
My Battery usage was working fine in ICS, what I would call normal battery drain.
After the update I am getting terrible battery use!!!!
I have tried closing, diabling all apps, radios, I have diabled bloatware.
But my battery keeps draining at a rate of 10% and hour!
All this with minor use.
I have opened a few apps and the Play Store but nothing else.
The S3 has just be inJust in standby.
In the settings, under battery it show my main power consumption is the SCREEN at 60%
I dont know how!
When the screen is off, I dont have a video wallaper and when I do power up the screen its so DIM I can hardley see anything.
All this happened after the Jelly Bean update!
Any idea on what I can do?
Do you think a factor restore would help?
Yes, back your dat up first though (contacts, calender, ect.) because you will have to redownload your apps. I did a reset and was on stock after updating but still had terrible battery life. The fix? Take the battery out 40 minutes, put it back in and run it COMPLETELY dead, and recharge it while it's turned off. Make sure you have time to do this without needing the phone because it takes a while. Like 7-8 hours. I've went a day now without much usage at all (still at 90% charge) and have a day left on standby. The battery reset helped more than anything I believe.
Yep same as mine jb update has a heavy battery drain..and my skyvalex callrecorder stopped working..i just flash back to ICS.

My opinion, factory wipe and Re-root it.
Install SetCPU and the Ktoonsez kernal to manage the power settings. Also Go Power Master is a good app to tweak power settings.
In SetCPU you can have it clocked down when the screen it off.
Had the same problem. Called att went through the ranks until I was told by att warranty supervisor that they had no work around and I should root my phone. Shocking they told me that. But I found the problem. I uninstalled the update to Google now and then shut it down. Battery seams to be doing good now.
Got a free battery from att though. I guess cause there higher ups have no idea how to fix drain.

Luckily your type of phone has a removable battery....unlike me...cannot replace to a higher battery capacity

Semi-solved
I somewhat have solved my problem.
What I did was Factory Reset from the Setting menu. I thought I would have lost Root doing this.
It was already set in my mind to just wipe the S3 clean and start over but the root did not get washed out.
So, I used Kies to only restore my contacts.
Instead of having any old apps restored I downloaded them all over again from the Play Store.
So far so good!!
I have better battery life than prior to the reset.
I had been losing 8% and hour in Standby and 10%+ when in use.
So far today I have used the phone with my screen brightness high, made about 10 calls, surfed youtube and I only down 6% in the last 2 hours.
I consider that better.
If there are some things I can add to my diable list that you all know of to give me an EVEN BETTER result please let me know!
Poor battery life here too. Battery settings says screen is eating 78% and Maps eating 10%. I'm a heavy user but its mostly surfing this site and Facebook. I don't play games or watch YouTube much
Does this solve the battery drain issue?
Hiya all.
I haven't got a S3 so I can't confirm this works.....
A friend was having the same battery drain issue and I was going through his settings and noticed that "Sync All" was on.
Turned it off and the battery drain stopped. We think.
It seems to easy to be true. So I'd like more S3 owners to try.

Hi have the lte version that i got couple of days back and i have the same problem. I have not rooted and it came stock with jb. So you have to do a factory reset and remove the battery and try or just the battery?
Also how to remove some stock apps, I don't use any.
My battery life stinks. I had to get the Mophie case with extra battery built in. works great
