Coming from Sensation to SGS3 - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I don't think I ever been so anxious to get a phone as much as I am to get the Galaxy S3 later on this month. When I first laid my hands on it during the summer, I already knew I wanted it. I'm coming from the HTC Sensation, one of my favorite phones. Anything I should know about the Galaxy (I've done my research, know how to flash/root,etc.)?

That it's awesome, any more brain busters?

I just made the exact same transition. No firmware to match with ROM's, just have to match up the radio.
One of the biggest differences for me was just how thin the phone was compared to the sensation. It's tough to hold the Sensation now.

Just make sure to back up your IMEI number as soon as you get the phone and have fun there's a lot of stuff to flash here. Your in luck too, cyanogen him self owns this phone and is getting ready to release 4.2 jelly bean nightly soon.

I made this same change just a month ago and I love the s3. One of the biggest difference is changing radios is MUCH easier, no more going into the bootloader and flashing the radio, with the s3 they are called "modems" and you flash it just like you do with a rom. Bigger screen obviously, but also better sound and volume through the speaker. WAY faster in general use, even rooted and overclocked my sensation was still slower than my underclocked s3. There are just as many if not more custom rom's for the s3 and everybody makes accessories for it.

I'm getting the GS3...just waiting to find a good holiday deal on it

The Sensation was a great phone though. Ahead of it's time. I was sad when I sold mine.

Return SGS2 - Wait for Nexus?

I am debating returning my sgs II, while I still have 15 days left to return it to wait for the Galaxy Nexus. I love the hercules, and im not returning it because of problems, I just want ICS and I feel like even though its a top rated phone, it will take forever to get ICs on it. I also think the Galaxy Nexus GSM version will be available around the same time as verizon version. Anyone have any input?

I think you will be waiting atleast a couple of months after it released on verizon before you see the GSM version. Plus there are quite a few devices either identicle or very similar to ours. So I think once one gets ics the porting will be much easier.

Yeah its a hard decision because I really like this phone....just don't wanna pass up the time I am able to return it for full price, and then regret not returning it. You really think it will be a couple months for a gsm version? Why do you say that?
return it, cancel it, and get another SGS2 from another store
then you auto extent to another 15 days
Be careful with this. Took my Tmobile gs2 back because of the screen issues and rebooting. Got a new one with minimal line issues and it seems snappier, but the guy told me it was the last exchange in the store. Me thinking I had 10 more days. Apparently since I returned an amaze and bought a BRAND NEW phone, the 14 days did not reset for me. I was always told anytime I had a new device it would reset the return period.

Well, I bought outright, so i actually get 30 days to return Its only 15 days if you buy with contract at a discounted price. And I have thought of that also...i still have til the 15th so ill give it a few more days and see if we get any news about the nexus I guess.... i dunno
Galaxy Nexus comes mid November 17 to 28 according to the fans in the GN forum.
personally i'm not excited at all about the GN, it's like a side-upgrade compared to SGS2
if you want a HD 720 device that is as best as you can get for Tmobile
otherwise SGS2 is the top of the hill at the moment spec wise
Considering how long it took for the Galaxy S2X to show up on Telus doorstep I wouldn't hold my breath for any upgrades.
It sucks as two good phones will be out but you'll have to decide of which two has the more important features and myself I love the screen on the Galaxy S2X

They did. But you will still will be waiting 3-4 months for a gsm version also keep in mind importing it might be more money then just waiting for the release. It is suppose to be released on Verizon right after black Friday. It was stated by various android sites recently. I wouldn't upgrade to it. If we get cm support or miui we will probably get ics within weeks after source drops.

im keeping mine ,the leaked speculation for the next galaxy phone are incredible...5mp camera and no sd slot ,that imo is going backward .i know the resolution is there and so is ICS but i can wait for it and if the next galaxy phone is anything close to being as planned then i would think it would be the right decision to keep the phone....unless you just got a bunch of money to blow then go for it
stick with the GalaxyS2 boss! like someone said earlier in this thread - we'll get ICS support fairly quickly with a ROM after source hits. specs are better on our phone and the lack of microsd card was a bit of a deal killer for us.
i'm getting galaxy nexus with 1280x720 resolutions! that is like putting your home desktop monitor in your pocket! haha
and 4.65 screen which the GS2 can never give me!

[Q] T989 development vs Sensation?

Is the development up to par withh the hype that surrounded this phone. I look through the forum and I don't see any rom as of right now that makes me want to switch. The Roms are all basically the same and seems like they aren't really that much better than being stock and rooted. I know this phone blows the sensation away etc etc but development over there unquestionably was much better. Just dissapointed because I thought we would get more devs here
we have cm 7 and were getting Cm9, miui is being worked on and the phone is still new. Plus the Dev is still more then the amaze in my opinion. We are the red headed step child of the sgs2 family don't forget that. It will grow bigger

I was running Energy rom. I actually had 2 sensations mine and my wife's, I took hers to play with when I sold mine to get the GS2 ,she went with mt4g slide and I'm about to sell the other one to a friend of mine who needs a phone bad. So that will leave me with just this phone ....not that its a bad thing just thought we would have a little more variety. Sensation was locked and that set it back for a while but once it was cracked it seemed like devs flocked to it. Maybe that will change once ics is up and running. But the guys that are here are doing a great job as there is some good available Roms. Trust me I'm not complaining cause I wish I could do what y'all do and I plan to in the future once life allows me the time

i've been setting up a Dev environment, but never had the time to actually build anything

I was ONE click away from the One X but...

I chose the galaxy nexus. And I'm very very very excited. At the end of the day you just have to be happy with your purchase. When the galaxy nexus first came out, I was like wow I want this phone so bad but I couldn't justify buying it since I had a galaxy s 2. Then I wanted a galaxy note but deep inside I really wanted a nexus but went for the note. Loved it a lot! Then sold it to get the One X buy deep in side again the nexus man I'm telling you I had to have it and I was one click away to buy the one x but then I went with my gut feeling and bought the nexus. I think I'm destined to have this phone after all this time. I'm so excited, I could care less about specs right now. I'm planning on getting the Galaxy s 3 when it comes out also and I'll keep both but I think the nexus is a must have. Very excited to say the least. WINNING!!!!!!!!!!! Splash!
nice, however if i was you i would have bought the one X today. sure the Gnex is awesome but its about 6 months old already and the one x would have been a better purchase

Well it is newer, and it is better. I would rather have the One X, as long as it's unlockable/rootable and I could put stock ICS on it. Then it would be a very awesome phone. As we've seen from the Galaxy S (and even the Galaxy Nexus actually), having a Nexus phone doesn't even mean you get updates first and/or in a timely fashion anymore.

Most people upgrade their devices to get the latest OSes. HTC devices are stagnant.
So that point is moot.

Having to jump through loops to unlock/root it and not having a pure stock ICS ROM available for download is a pretty big point not making it better in my book.
Sure it looks nice, build quality seems very good, too. Quadcore is probably not yet the wisest choice for a smartphone, as it is not really necessary and eats a LOT of battery.
Just because we had to wait a few months for the update this time also doesn't mean it will be always like this in the future.
First gen dual cores blew.
First gen anything has issues. Time will tell with quads, but it will not even remotely shock me if issues show up.

And then the devs struggle to figure out how to get AOSP to work on the phone while they wait for manufacturer's source: the months of waiting for AOSP to be (fully) functional on a non-Nexus device are enough to turn me off "upgrading" no matter how good a phone looks. The fluke/perfect storm of getting AOSP to run so easily on the SGS likely will never happen again.

Make the switch, you won't regret it. The specs on the Nexus are not only better (aside from camera and lack of sd slot) but development is light years ahead of the Amaze. There will of course be a new Nexus in the next 3-4 months, but it won't be $350 that's for sure. I came from an Amaze, and a T-Mo S2 and don't regret it one bit.

ugggghhh its just so irritating. they release phones with awesome specs but then you cant developed for it....
i hate it when people say "oh we'll get the latest update from cyanogen xx.xx...."
which is BULL****... considering half the time cyanogen wont ever be as refined or close to being complete on said device considering the lack of kernel source/lack of support from the manufacture... people buying non nexus devices are just being delusional. i have come to that conclusion. maybe manufacturers need to beef up the specs of their nexus device in the upcoming years
i believe the only non nexus device that i believed had a blossoming of development is the T-mobile G2\htc vision (i personally had that phone and had lots of fond moments flashing roms in)
other than that nexus all the way. i just wish htc makes the next nexus or there would be 5 of them in the future

Have to disagree with you on the "blossoming of development" part.
Have had the captivate. Which to this day. Is still going strong. And had a jellybean port before the gs3.
I had the epic touch 4g and the att gs2. Which are both still amazing phones going strong. And I am now onto the gs3 which isn't even 2 months old. (U.S release) and the number of ROMs and support for it is overwhelming.

Its a device that won't die with great devs still, sense 3.5 roms were last developed by Newt/Joelz/Wildstang/Puremotive.
We had an amazing dev and community spot, its dying down as others are upgrading.

I honestly cannot wait to start enjoying this phone! Its big enough for my hands, my 3'7 incredible.. my hand swallows this phone and I needed a big phone.
Ahh I'm ecstatic!!!

+1 on that bro, I can't wait for it to be here. And for fun's sake I even spent all night watching an Unboxing video. The only time I have ever touched the Galaxy nexus was in a Sprint store. I looked at the Gnex Screen, then back at mine. Mine looked ****ty compared to the Galaxy Nexus' Gorgeous Screen Resolution. It looked so beautiful. Messed with the UI and felt so smooth. And that was ICS. They say Jellybean is 5x Better than ICS. The moment I get the phone I'll root it and install a good JB Rom.
What's a good Sprint Galaxy Nexus Jellybean Rom?

I don't know about the Sprint variant but with the Verizon version I have had great luck with Euroskank CM10 ROM.

5 days to go
I also noticed that the people in the Nexus Community are cheerful and don't throw you off for saying something wrong. They're actually polite. Some people in the Evo 3D threads answer questions with sarcasm. As if they're perfect.

For your first jelly bean ROM I recommend going with Bug less Beast. I'm running it right now and it is as stable as anything and I'm about three releases behind (7/19 version.) Its my first rom and its making me a root believer!

I just got a nexus today the unlocked version. I'm debating whether I should root it since I have the stock jelly bean. I came from an iPhone 4s. This will be my second android phone though . My first was a skyrocket. I'm liking what I see so far though.
Of course you should root! The development is astounding I personally have spent many hours molding and tweaking mine and loved every minute of it. We have some of the best and most generous devs in the world

Themes / Apps / Mods Nostalgia overload

This wallpaper takes me back to the first Nexus device. Hard to believe how far phones have come since the first one. Anyone else around since the G1 era?

My Bad..
Can you Link the wallpaper?
My boss had that phone. I was so jealous. Lol
That's the phone that started me on android, had two G1's, one rooted and one stock. Was fun back in those days with all the development going on. Cyanogen Mod and waiting for the weekly updates, can't remember who but I did some testing for one of the recoveries used on the G1.
I had an N1, but only after the original HTC Desire as that was more widely available in the UK and, after using both, somewhat more refined than the N1. That said, the physical trackball was far easier to use than the optical on the Desire.
I was also a fan of the Nexus S and its curved front, but I know I'm in the minority on that one

Second post in this thread. https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/nostalgia-overload.4354343/post-85857495
My first Android was the HTC Droid Eris (rooted, of course). The trackball was interesting although it gave me problems eventually, and I then had to abuse it to get it completely disabled instead of giving me the constant problems when I wasn't trying to use it.

JesusFreak I believe was the recovery Kingpin, right?
Yes I had to go to Columbus, Oh. to buy the G1 because the Cincinnati area didn't have 3G and T-Mobile only sold the phone in 3G coverage areas.

I am. Rooted my HTC G1 and loved it. Then the Nexus One was launching and at the time my phone was still fairly new considering how long we used to keep them before smart phones.
Since my wife (gf then) wanted to save money on our bill she got this garbage Samsung dumb phone when I got the G1. So when the Nexus launched I had zero issue buying it immediately because she HATED that phone and wanted mine.
Can't blame me, I tried to talk her into a G1 (she later upgraded to a Rezound, god I miss HTC) she wouldn't budge though lol.
I would be constantly flashing new firmware and Kernel's on my Nexus. I barely ever used it I was doing it so often just because of how cool it was. Eventually the scene started to slow down and I got a couple non Google phones then a pixel xl which was my last until the 6 pro. My least fav Nexus was the Samsung Galaxy Nexus... Go figure since the last 3 phones I've had and come to eventually hate were all Samsung snapdragon devices that couldn't be rooted. I should have imported one instead. Apparently there is a method but it's not public afaik and it costs too much to be worth it and you have to mail them your phone... No ty.
Hopefully Google doesn't start preventing modification because that would be a damn shame. Seeing where the scene is today compared to then is already hard enough. We went from too many firmwares and Kernel's to not enough and it seemed to happen really fast too. I had a bad feeling the day they announced cyanogen was going to come pre installed on whatever that phone was. So many other people based their modified firmware on cyanogen but the tweaks some of them made were genius. Stuff Google is just adding now.
The only bad memory of the scene I have is when I bought an nVidia shield portable off of eBay and the guy didn't say that he installed lineage to it and I don't remember if I couldn't get it back to it's original state for some reason or what but I was not happy, especially since those things were rare and I had found one in we great shape but I couldn't use anything but moonlight on it... Owell.
