[GUIDE] Getting the most out of your HOX (Inc Battery/Speed) - HTC One X

Over the last few weeks, I've been looking into the most productive ways of saving battery on my HOX. Please note you don't have to follow this guide Step-by-Step, you can simply pick and choose which tweaks/tips you want to use to try and improve your battery.
Some of the tricks I used, were extremely effective, others have little effect but which ever ones you choose, is up to you:
Optional (BUT MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE):
Click to collapse
Before I went about getting the most out of my battery, I made a complete factory reset, to make sure anything left from previously used rogue apps etc, were gone and werent causing issues.
First (Optional) - Get a new launcher:
Click to collapse
The first thing I did was get Nova Launcer, as I think Nova is clean, smooth and looks very similar to stock Android, which makes it easier to go from my HOX, to my Nexus 7 without getting confused. This is also great if your one of the many out there that aren't a fan of Sense. There are other launchers to choose from, so make your choice:
Nova
Apex
GoLauncher
LightningLauncher
I can only comment about Nova, which uses next to no battery.
Second - Creating some useful toggles:
Click to collapse
For this, I used HD Widgets. Create toggles for your brightness and then use this toggle to set your brightness to a point where you find it nice. I left it at 50%. Also create a toggle to FORCE SYNC.

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
HD Widgets
Beautiful Widgets
PowerToggles (Free Alternative)
Third - Disabling all / Un-used Syncs:
Click to collapse
Auto syncing in my eyes, is pretty useless, as everything re-syncs/updates when you enter it, including mail and calendars etc. So I turned most of them off, leaving a couple such as Play Updates. Then, if needsby, use the toggle widget you created earlier and force-sync when you need to.
THE BIGGEST SYNC DRAINER IS FACEBOOK, COMPLETELY DISABLE FACEBOOK's SYNCS, Unless this is important to you !
Goto:
Settings -> Accounts and Sync -> Choose each profile and un-tick any Sync's that you don't use.
Fourth - Using Tasker to its potential ! (MOST EFFECTIVE):
Click to collapse
For those of you who don't know, Tasker is an EXTREMELY powerful automation tool for your phone, which you can program to do almost anything you wish. Tasker is known to have a learning curve, but I find if you look at it logically you can figure your way around it quite simply. It works like this:
What do I want to happen
What is going to cause it
What I want Tasker to do once that has happened.
YOU CAN FIND TASKER HERE
Tasker Profile 1 - This has got to be one of the best Tasker profiles I've done yet, as it saved me pretty much 20% battery, A DAY.
Profile One:
Set the Context to - Display State ON
Set a wait period of 10 seconds
Set the Task to - Enable Wifi
Profile Two:
Set the Conext to - Display State OFF
Set a Wait period of 10 seconds
Set the task to - Disable Wifi
The wait is so that when you flick the screen on and off, to check time/date, it doesn't enable/disable Wifi straight away.
Another method of this, to save even more battery, would be to disable WiFi altogether, and then set tasker to enable WiFi by App per App basis (Such as Facebook/Browser/Youtube) etc
Bedtime Ritual?
Some Android Phones/Versions support tools to allow you to disable almost anything between certain times. This is often called "night-mode". This can save rucks of battery, but isnt useful to many as lots of people charge during the night. If your one that doesn't, either use the in-built funtions, or again use Tasker, to disable all features and functions you see fit between the times you sleep and wake up. Such as 12PM to 6AM.
Fifth - Changing to GSM Only (When no Data needed):
Click to collapse
Although I don't use this one much myself, it can make almost a 20% different in battery between GSM and GSM/WCDMA Auto. If possible, changing it to GSM only can save alot of battery:
Step 1: Tap on settings in the notification panel.
Step 2: Then tap on Mobile network and the network mode.
Step 3: Tap on GSM only.
Sixth - Monitor your battery, to check whats unique to you:
Click to collapse
Monitoring your battery, to see whats draining your battery in particular can be a very good method of highlighting, and remove rogue battery eaters etc.
The abolute best tool for this, bar non is BBS (BetterBatteryStats) which monitors Wakelocks etc to see whats eating the battery.
You can find BetterBatteryStats here.
If you like his work and would consider donating find it on the PlayStore.
Seventh - Use Push Notifications where possible:
Click to collapse
Alot of people have mail clients on their device, this can range from Exchange servers for work, to personal E-Mails such as GoogleMail and HotMail. These often "poll" for updates every so often (usually 15 minutes) this is an absolute killer for battery, luckily, alot of them now support "Push" notifications. If this is an option for you USE IT.
Eighth - Ditch Un-used widgets:
Click to collapse
Widgets are very useful for most users, and alot of people use them. It is also one of Androids main differences to its competitors.
Ditch the Widgets you rarely use, or those that don't make much difference and could be removed in exchange for simply opening the app.
For example FaceBook's widget in my eye's is useless, its just as easy to go to the Website/App and check their. Lets be honest here, people are on FaceBook multiple times a day, whats the use in the widget?
Also, if your like me, everything is kept on the one page, remove all other Widgets from other pages if possible.
Nineth - Disable Haptic Feedback:
Click to collapse
Haptic feedback can be an absolute killer to your battery, and is also pretty useless. Haptic feedback basically plays a tone/vibrates each time you press something, so typing "Hello" would cause it to vibrate 5 times. Whats the use? Surely you know when you've pressed it, and also LOOK AT THE SCREEN? to see if you've pressed it.
To Disable haptic feedback:
Haptic Feedback, along with sound feedback, is located under the "Sound" options, at the very bottom. Disable one or both and you will see an improvement.
IF THERES ANYTHING ANYONE CAN ADD TO THIS. LET ME KNOW.
Wilks3y.

Ta, and gutted
Dno whether to bother with performance tweaks.
Especially all the moaning that goes on when you try and ask/help people.

A few points from me too..
1. Update the apps regularly. The updated apps usually have bug fixes which helps not to drain your battery fast.. It's not so noticeable,,but it works!!
2. Get the maximum signal strength. Battery tends to be more energy sucking while it constantly search for network coverage.. It's not possible for constant travellers,,but try to keep the phone atleast at home where you can get the best coverage..
3. Keep the battery cool. Ofcourse most users love to play games and do much hard usage with their devices,,but remember that a hot battery drains fast.. So keep an eye on the battery temperature..
4. Keep an eye on the autostart apps that unwantedly start up from the boot. Rooted users could disable these apps to minimise battery wastage
(needs suggestions on apps to do so)
5.Last but not the least,, DELETE unwanted apps

check your inbox mate should be roughly 2/3rds the original size now

Would also be good if there's a little warning at the GSM section that selecting it will deny you 3G/HSDPA speeds for the sake of battery
But since this is posted in XDA, and I would assume that anyone here would have been rooted at least, would you want some suggestions for root users? Since performance tweaks mostly can only be done through root access (mostly)

[WP7] Battery Percent Indicator

a tool using the direct arm dll that fiinix @ XDA wrote in DllImport.
HTC Battery Tool does it with all sorts of info, this one is just simple, to the point.
I did this almost a month ago to date and had it as a live tile. I use it ALL THE TIME so I thought I would pass it along to all the fellow side loaders on here.
enjoy it, use it or whatever
thanks:
fiinix @ XDA
if you already use a battery percentage notification, tell me which one below?
thanks in advance, hope this helps someone as it has helped me.
Code:
edit: added cleaner NoDo_nation version because, who am I kidding anyway.
Very interest, I use this one till now and it work top.
I will tray out your Battery-Tool and report. Thanks.
Edit: Work like it have to work, good making and no conflict with the PhoneRestartTool with the code/dll from fiinix.
Great work on this!
Lovely, that's very nice.
Do you thinkt it'd be possible to add a live tile to that?
I know a lot of people are already sick of having to many of them but I could still use a couple more and one of them I'd like to be something like this
I've been experimenting a LOT with live tiles -- the result of which I am not happy with.
It is a bit of a catch22 because of the way you need to subscribe the live tile. I've short-fused the subscription whereas I can get a live tile update direct from code but the catch22 is the fact that the program has to run first to do it.
So what you end up with is a stale tile all the time. I'm not out of options quite yet but without running on a true background thread or the like, it almost looks like a "stalemate" -- no pun, well, whatever.

You need jaxbot hack enabled and then still hope it will be able to push trough in the background.
Its far from reliable and will probably drain battery fast since there is no way to manage tasks yet, all tasks keep running in the background if you dont close them by pressing the back button (but you also should not kill the battery app ofcourse) which is indeed pretty much impossible, certainly for the average user to manage. You can juts better swipe down the task bar or just open the app
Nice job. Using the NoDo version.

Does this one fix the conflicts with other apps that this one has? I know both use the dll import project which is why I ask. I tried the previous one for a few days but found it caused severe problems with the Weather Channel app and the TouchXperience app. They wouldn't load after checking the battery app. I will give it a run through and see how it works out.

It should not cause problems -- I use the Weather Channel app and also the TouchXperience app and have not noticed any conflicts of any sort. If you discover them, I have the source code open and ready to modify at any time.
Thanks in advance to all the comments and thanks in my first post!
ps. I had someone ask me if I could add a voice that spoke the percentage. I can. If I get enough people interested in the feature, I could probably have it done in an hour. Let me know if this is something that would set this app apart from the others or just unnecessary junk?

At the moment, you would only see rate of percentage decrease because mA values are not available through any means I've researched up to this point. Also, it would have to get thrown on a background thread - which makes the problem two-fold.
on top of the problems, a percentage decrease wouldn't be very accurate for several reasons.
I'll keep looking around however!

So far so good. I am honestly still teaching myself how phone 7 does it's coding being a amateur coder, but only thing I can guess is something in common with the original battery app and those to programs. I can duplicate it all day long with that one. With yours I had it happen one time. I opened the battery app. Then attempted to load either Weather channel or TouchXperience and the latter two apps would load then immediately shut down. I have yet to have it happen again with yours so good work!

This could be cool, but I do like just the quick glance. Something I would like maybe is the ability to toggle an actual image with the percentage, but that's really just for visual sake. As it stands your app does what it's supposed to do and I like that.

[APP]Screen Filter. (Adjust your brightness of screen and save battery)

Hi guys.
I always feel that my display eats the most of my battery..I know what do you expect from S.AMOLED Plus displays..Gorgeous i know but eats your battery..Anyway great app on the market that i have started to use and it works wonders for me and would like to spread the word, if you don't already know about about this app..
Link is this https://market.android.com/details?id=com.haxor&hl=en
Apologies if you already have it, but i just thought if there are more people like myself who want to save a bit of juice on your battery this is a great app to use specially if your brightness is abit to much as well.
Cheers

[APP][ROOT][BETA] ButtonLED

New thread with updated ButtonLED.
Everything below this point is outdated.
Hey guys,
I've been fiddling around Tasker for the last few weeks and finally decided to create a fully functional app using it.
At this point, some of you will be thinking "Another useless, ugly, cluttered Tasker created app that does something nobody needs".
Well, then, I'll try to prove you wrong
Note: You do not need Tasker to use the app.
App Description:
ButtonLED is similar to NoLED: it allows you to have LED like notifications without actually having the LED light. However, NoLED uses uses your screen; ButtonLED only uses the hardware buttons' backlight (your screen stays off). It's customizable to an extent, with more to come depending on feedback and suggestions.
Features:
Pause for some user defined time on proximity (e.g. if phone is turned down, or is in your pocket);
Turn button backlight for X seconds, then off for Y seconds;
Should work on all devices since the user can locate the brightness file;
Notification exceptions (e.g. to ignore all notification that contain "Hello", add *Hello* to the exception list)
Logs
Compatibility:
It should work on all rooted devices. It will work out of the box (once you open it) for Samsung Galaxy Ace i devices (Galaxy Ace users will probably need to locate the brightness file), which is why I'm choosing to offer it for testing here. I'll release it in the Android Apps and Games section if the reviews are favorable. If not, I'll take their content into consideration and improve it before release it there.
Running the app:
Install, open, enable in accessibility. Done. You may need to select a different brightness file.
You may also want to customize the options.
On the Galaxy Ace i, the brightness file is located at:
/sys/devices/platform/bcm21553-leds/leds/button-backlight/brightness

I'm not sure. It might be because it's not compatible with JB. Didn't think this would be an issue first, since our devices only support GB. Forgot about the regular Ace's custom ROMs.
I'll release a JB apk later, and hope it works.

Should be fixed in v1.1. Actually, it shouldn't be happening in v1.0 since I've already included a quick check that resets the brightness to 0, but I altered a few things in v1.1 that should make it fail proof.

Also, if you think it's read to be released in the general Android Apps and Games section, please say so.

No idea why that's happening, sorry. It could be an issue with your ROM, you might want to check logcats if you want.

You can already do that: open ButtonLED, select "Permanent notification" and then press the "X" button.

I will try the app on a stock based rom and on cm9. I'll tell you what it does
EDIT: I installed it succesfully on cm9.
I Will try stocklite v7.1 (stock based 2.3.6) within 3 days.

Ok, Houston, have a few situations here... with v1.1
The camera led it´s not working with buttonled, no way.
The log does not work.
After 5 hs. the battery power is on 20% , (only wifi is on)
So back to v1.0 and stay here for a moment.
(to be fair v1.0 it´s all I need, but...
Info about the phone:

About the camera LED, just to make sure:
Open ButtonLED;
Select "Use flashlight ...";
Press the "✓" button;
Select "Test ButtonLED". Your flashlight should turn on and off.
If it doesn't work, and if you have Tasker (or if you can install the trial version), can you try creating a simple task that will turn the "Torch" on then off? Just to make sure that Tasker feature is compatible with your phone (the documentation says it's not compatible with all phones).
Regarding the battery, I don't see why that would happen, unless you left your phone with ButtonLED active for those five hours (when I say active, I mean turning your LED on and off), especially that nothing, battery wise, has changed from v1.0 to v1.1.
Did you flash a new ROM lately? If so, try recalibrating your battery.
For the logs, what exactly do you mean when you say they don't work?
Are they inaccurate? In that case, I fixed it in v1.2. It was a slight issue causing skipped notifications to be displayed as "processed" in the logs (e.g. if your screen is on, ButtonLED will skip a notification; v1.1 will mark it as processed in the logs, tho).
If it's something else (e.g. logs not showing up, some other issue), please specify.
Thanks for the reports
Ok..thank you so much ..

I just remembered that pushing the app using adb should give you more information about why the installation failed, so please try that.
Hi, I found this app on Tasker groups (thanks to the author)
However on my device (galaxy s2 with cyanogen10) I have no /sys/devices/platform/*-leds/leds/ and on tasker Set Light says it's not available on my device...
It's a ROM problem I suppose, because keys backlight are present (as hardware) and supported by the ROM (they turn on and there is an option to use or not use them!). Should I ask to cyanogen developers?
again thanks

Yeah, it's probably hidden somewhere else.
Did some googling and found that for the One X (running CM10), it's /sys/devices/platform/msm_ssbi.0/pm8921-core/pm8xxx-led/leds/button-backlight/currents
Other users say that /sys/class/leds/button-backlight/brightness works instead.
So you could also try looking for something similar.
Make sure to report back once you find it

How Did You Extend Your Battery Life?

has anyone extended their battery life on their rooted S3? if so, how?
Instal CM 10.2 without gapps. You will get 50% plus on battery

wow thats a lot on battery.. are you sure when you say 50%?
What do you mean extend your battery? Do you mean so that it lasts longer?
It depends on what apps and settings you have running on your phone. Things tend to fluctuate for me daily. There's some tips you can do to make things better:
- I tend to disable location (tends to dramatically improve things for me).
- I don't use Google Now, turned that off while I can still use Google Search. Doesn't drain the battery as much.
- Monitor and see which apps are using the battery. There's a bunch of various apps that can give you more information and to diagnose things.
- Check your Account "sync" settings and turn off anything you don't need/use.

But i dont like the 3 soft keys at the bottom of CM. Is there any way to delete them? Its really stupid and unnecessary.
Really? When I installed CM 10.2, I didn't get any soft keys. It's really unnecessary, unless your capacitive keys/button don't work.

Turn mobile data off when your not using. Use a data toggle.

what do u mean by "Try to change that annoying 3 buttons in settings > interface"... do you mean that its difficult to remove those 3 sodt keys?
No, it's simple if you have hardware buttons and don't want soft buttons, just try to search in settings or search in CyanogenMod support on their official site.
i see. i'll try that. its just that theyre so annoying. i dont understand how ppl can stand those buttons at the bottom of their screen knowing that they take up vital screen space.. very weird.

You can make the argument that the Galaxy S3's screen is TOO big, and that having those buttons wouldn't really matter.
Personally, I just upgraded from a myTouch 4G, which has a 3.8 inch display. That phone was much easier to use with one hand and a whole inch really makes a difference. I find that I have too much room on my S3.
Regarding your original questions, I do a couple things to extend my battery life:
- Keep the brightness ALL the way down when I'm inside. The display is probably the most battery sucking component.
- I use Tasker and it that knows when to turn my wifi on when I'm at home, or turn auto brightness on when a certain light level is met. Stuff like that.
- Use Greenify to hibernate most of my apps when I'm not actively using them.

but having a larger screen does matter, otherwise there wouldnt be such a big demand for larger phones to type and see videos and stuff with greater ease. so having those annoying buttons is completely unnecessary as any S3 user with a history of previously owned smaller screened phones can attest. matter of fact i'm thinking of buying a note 3 or wait for the S5 which will have a 5.25 inch screen.
i'm not yet rooted but will be soon. i never get round to do it. but its a nust and on my to do list. i want to greenify my phone to freeze apps from sucking out more battery and memory than is needed. after i root my phone i'll try out CM 10.2 as long as those stupid soft buttons arent in the way. the dev that created CM 10.2 must be really ignorant not to have eliminated them or at least given the option to remove them.

It's all preference.
Those buttons AREN'T there in CM 10.2 for the S3 (I'm using the stable version), so don't worry.

Hidden Menu benefits

Hello guys, has the title says, what benefits I can get from the hidden menu on the G4 H811?
I recently turned OFF Fast dormancy mode and I see tons of options like changing bands on LTE or even LTE aggregation.
Any options I can turn on OFF that give positive results?

Not really and sometimes launching those activities outside their intended original source can cause all kinds of crazy **** to happen.. now you can use the app quick shortcut maker and make a direct shortcut to all kinds of system settings and a bunch that you cannot even get to MV system settings menus which is really cool like a direct shortcut to the usage manager that shows your battery running apps and data usage in a single section altogether that's not in the regular settings and all kinds of other settings and some that have been disabled by the carrier… be careful and for god sakes do not touch the system shutdown monitor activity because I saw someone take weeks to figure out how to pool their phone back out from a solid brick where the power wouldn't even come on at all just by clicking launch on that activity lol

I feel ya man better safe than sorry huh lol. But there is some cool stuff mainly making direct Shortcuts to specific system settings is what I do and settings and features the carrier disabled which most always disable something (verizon being the worst, control freaks). Like I can reenable stock launcher themes on my g4 verizon cut out, using the activities. The app QUICK SHORTCUT MAKER is a priceless tool and has practically no limits. Will even let you try the activity in the app just use comon sense and don't hesitate to ask and if you need any other help pm me and I'll take a swing at it. Good luck
