Swapping in your own custom apps - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey everyone, I've always been a huge fan of inverted apps. With 4.2.1 coming out it seems there is a much longer delay in ROMs coming out. There are some inverted gapps packages though and I want to add some to a ROM.
I am currently running (or will be running) Xylon 011 Beta 3. I've tried JustUnBean's gapps package but it causes my phone to get constant FC's. Through some playing around (flashed JustUnBean and then gapps package dated 20121130) I managed to get a working ROM but it added a bunch of stuff I didnt want.
If I was to manually edit the Xylon 11 Beta 3 zip file and manually swap in the .apks of the inverted apps I want would that essentially give me inverted apps or would I be running into just as many issues?
Also does anyone know of a good inverted ROM with 4.2.1 yet? Many suggest to just use an inverted gapps package which is all well and good but one of the primary apps I like to have inverted is the calendar. I am able to flash the old inverted version of calendar in the meantime though.
Anywho just thought I'd ask the question.
Thanks!

justins gapps worked fine for me.. i tried them on pa and xylon, but since 4.2 i have been using this theme instead of inverted gapps.. and if you want you can edit the gapps package yourself, delete apps you dont want and add apps that you want

Yeah turns out I was a little too anxious with JustUnBean's gapps... using the Aroma installer worked perfectly!
I did try editing his gapps package but it almost always ended up in FCs or a phone that wouldnt boot. For some reason I thought that Aroma was another recovery and didnt realize it was an installer app.
I am sitting pretty with the Xylon 011 Beta 3 and all the stuff inverted that I wanted (Calendar is never themed in user themes)

A lot of developers (but not all, of course) have moved on to the latest and greatest Nexus phone. Expect a few key ROMs to either get sporadic updates or fall off the face of the earth. It happens to every phone as it ages, sadly.
I haven't seen much either in the way of inverted apps, so keeping an eye on this.

[GAPPS][4.2] Latest Google Apps for AOSP-based ROMs [24 MAY]

Here is my custom Google Apps package. It comes in two flavors: Google and AOSP. What's the difference?
The Google flavor flashes stock keyboard, camera and some other stuff so it allows you to use features like Photo Sphere and Gesture Typing. The AOSP flavor will retain your ROM's version of files so you can enjoy modified apps like the CM camera.

Flashing the ROM might be easier since you already have the zip file and no need to download more files.
Wonderful

Hello guys,
It's been a while since Android 4.2 came out and I've yet to see a proper gapps package for it that's hassle-free and has everything working like an official one. So I compiled an (unofficial) one.
Here's a quick overview of what's inside the package:
GalleryGoogle.apk - Fully working Photo Sphere camera, viewing, photo editing and sync
LatinImeGoogle.apk - Keyboard with swipe gestures and dictionary
BrowserGoogle.apk - Not sure how it is different from AOSP but I included it anyways
EmailGoogle.apk
Google Now
Gmail - with pinch-to-zoom and lockscreen widget
Below is a list of what's not included:
Google+
Talkback
YouTube
(You can still install these through the Play Store)
This does not work on 4.1.2 and below. It would create compatibility issues and FCs everywhere. Thanks to demon2112 for the feedback.

Tested on fnv-aosp 4.2 001. Should work with every (deodexed) AOSP JOP40C ROMs out there, maybe even those upcoming CM10.1 builds!
Report here if you encounter any issues. Any feedback would be very appreciated.
Enjoy!
Note: If somehow, someone with a different device came across this thread, make sure it has an ARMv7 CPU before flashing this.

fnv-aosp 4.2 002 (build 11/18) I couldn't get the device to boot and flashing the Gapps posted by DaxMax worked.

[Q] Inverted Apps and Swiftkey

I've noticed a few people were experiencing issues with latest 4.2.2 inverted apps and SwiftKey on the latest SOA build.
Were you experiencing issues BEFORE flashing to build 3 ? On any other rom ?
I've downloaded the zip file for inverted app, didn't install it until I've flashed last night the SOA B3. Email, g-apps, tapatalk, etc. Swiftkey isn't working... Have to choose EVERYTIME I'm rebooting, Swiftkey as keyboard input...
Can't say for before, because I wasn't running the inverted app file ( except the Youtube inverted app ) and on build 2.
Any idea how to make it stay selected ? Because, when selected, SwiftKey is working flawless !

[Q] Similar ROM to Slimbean (small size) but without its own Gapps?

So the thing I enjoy most about slimbean is the "night" setting and the smaller sizes.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but the part that determines the general sizes is the LCD density, and for slim its at 245.
Are there any ROMs that also use the same LCD density (if that is what's causing the small size)?
I'm mainly wondering because it uses its own Gapps package so that it could do this night mode where everything is black.
But I want to use the new gmail and other gapps that just came out more than I want night mode
You don't have to use the SlimBean GApps with the Slim ROMs, but have a look at CarbonROM (has Dark Carbon settings and you can change LCD density).

I use LiquidSmooth (what Carbon is based off of) and used to use their method to change the DPI. But recently, I've discovered the XPosed Per-App DPI settings included in the Rom. With it I can manually adjust the DPI of any program to make it whatever I want. The thing I like about this is that I don't have to mess with the Play Store (no more errors when trying to download apps). That, and some apps don't play well with a modified dpi on our phone.
I can go through and make google calendar 240 dpi and see how it functions, then change it to 190 an see how it works. I change Nova's setting to make the launcher look more like Slim Rom's (the Rom that made me fall in love with switching the DPI). It works really well and is worth a test drive, in my opinion.

So I tried to install it, and I got this assert failed problem, which links to this solution. Did you flash the odex, deodex, or 3rd rom? I'm just confused, since I would have to install a gapps for the 4.1.2 JB. did you do any of that?
edit - my broadband is mc3

Welcome to the wonderful world of inverted applications. If this is your first time here, I’d invite you to sit back, and please read the first three posts all the way through. Failure to do this will result in you not being helped if you have any problems. Please understand that it takes a lot of time to create these inverts, let alone package them up for you guys, so the very least you could do is read three simple posts and do a search in the thread to see if your question has already been answered. Now, let’s get on with the show.

Requirements:
Read the FAQ in post #2 to check for solutions to known issues.
AOSP ROMs require Jellybean 4.2.x for full Gapps package.
Touchwiz ROMs require Jellybean 4.1/4.2 for the Aroma installer.
Note that while other versions may indeed work with modifications, only those with 4.2.x on AOSP and 4.1/4.2 on TouchWiz will receive support here.
Some of these zips only support AOSP-based ROMs, such as Cyanogenmod, AOKP, and so on.
Touchwiz ROMs should use the Touchwiz Aroma installer, not the main Aroma installer.
Sense is not currently supported.
You must have a rooted device.
CWM, TWRP, 4EXT, or other custom recovery installed.
Note that not all recoveries are supported, but the zips should be fairly universal.
A minimum of 225MB of free system space for the FullFlash, and 115MB for the QuickFlash.
Touchwiz Aroma requires 125MB of free system space.
NOTE that if you aren't sure of your free system space, you can simply open up Titanium Backup, and it will tell you at the bottom of the home screen.
DeOdexed ROMs ONLY are supported for AOSP ROMs.
Touchwiz Aroma supports Odexed and Deodexed ROMs.
Note that most all stock ROMs are odexed. If you aren’t sure about a custom ROM, ask your chef.
A full wipe is required before installing these zips. If you don't, then do not ask for support. Make a full backup before flashing in case something goes wrong.
Explanation:
Aroma zip is the mack daddy of all zips. It contains everything, but it is packaged into an interface that allows you to pick and choose which apps or gapps you want to install, all from your recovery.
Full Flash zip is a full and complete inverted Gapps package for your JB 4.2+ ROM. Just flash your ROM.zip and then this one. No need to flash any other Gapps packages at all.
Quick Flash zip is a simple zip that installs all the inverted apps by Team Blackout into their proper places. This should be flashed after your normal Gapps package for JB 4.2+. Stock apps other than Email are not included in this zip.
Instructions:
Download the zip you want based on what you want installed.
Boot into recovery.
Make a backup before doing anything in case something goes wrong.
Full wipe your device.
Flash ROM.zip
Flash inverted.zip (gapps first if using quickflash on AOSP)
Reboot.
Do not restore data from non-inverted apps.
Downloads:
Do NOT hotlink/direct link to my zips. If you want to share this work with someone else, then please direct them to this thread. I just want new comers to know where to go for help or to say whether something is or is not working. I prefer that the work not be spread out all over the place. Keeping in line with XDA's new sharing policy, it is for those reasons, that I do not allow anyone else to reshare my work. If you have any questions or concerns about that, please post in this thread, and I'll PM you about it.
CLEAN WIPE IS ALWAYS REQUIRED!
Downloads can be found on www.inverts.cajunflavoredbob.com/. Don’t worry, there’s no signup, ads, or any other nonsense. It’s just an easier way for me to track downloads. MD5 sums and file sizes are listed next to each download to verify file integrity.
Problems:
If you have any problems, read the FAQ. If your question is not answered there either, search the thread. If it is still not answered, then post your question using as many details as possible. The more we know about your problem, the better we can help you.

Want to help out?
If you guys really want to help out with this project, you could help get me more online storage. Copy.com will start you off with 20GB of storage (normally 15GB) when you sign up with my referral link. I receive an extra 5GB of storage for every referral I get as well, so we both win and it's FREE!!! So since This project takes up a ton of space, I'd really appreciate it if you guys would spend five minutes on this and help me out. The more storage I get, the more I can sync between machines to work on this on the go.

After signing up, you can install the desktop app for Windows, Mac OSX, or Linux, or the Android App or iOS App. This is how we both get our extra 5GB of space.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why didn't MMS/People app invert? Why does People app force close? Why did my dialer disappear? Not all ROMs are compatible with the MMS and People apps. If you experience any of those issues, please DO NOT use the Full Flash zip. To fix it, just push the contacts.apk file from your ROM.zip to /system/app, then set permissions to -rw-r--r-- and reboot.
2. Why does Google Keep have a white background for new notes? If you have a white Quick Note background, just touch into the field, and type a letter. The color pallet will appear on the top right corner of the field. Simply touch it, and select black or whichever color you want to be default. The white will then be gone. Here's a screenshot, if you're confused.
3. Does the inverted Play Store here support multi-DPI?In the Aroma installer, you have the option to install the Inverted Multi-DPI Play Store separately from the regular inverted Play Store. The Multi-DPI one is deselected by default. If you happen to select both of them, the multi-DPI one will overwrite the regular one. The FullFlash and QuickFlash zips do not have the multi-DPI store at this time.
4. Craigslist doesn't show my city.I've been able to find my city by changing my country to Africa, then scrolling down the list. Team Blackout is working on a fix for this.
5. Tango doesn't install properly on my Touchwiz ROM or gives me a message "ERROR 62" before it force closes.Open up your file explorer, and navigate to /data/app. Tap on Tango.apk to install it directly. This should fix things for you.
6. Google Plus has some non-inverted parts in the settings menu.If you come across this, re-run Aroma, and select the option to fix Google Plus. That should take care of things for you.
7. The Mighty Text app is all squished together, or looks strange. This is an app designed for tablets only. If you don't have a tablet, please skip this one. It is de-selected in Aroma be default for this reason.
8. Slacker is transparent instead of blacked out.To make it inverted, there is a night mode checkbox in the settings menu. Check it and enjoy.
9. Email doesn't show up in my app drawer. If it doesn't show up, try renaming it to Email2.apk and reboot. If that still doesn't fix it, don't use it. It isn't compatible with every ROM.
10. YouTube Downloader is not shown in my app drawer/YouTube icon is still red.If you don't see OG YouTube Downloader in your app drawer, and the YouTube app icon is red instead of blue, it is not compatible and will not work. You don't need to do anything in this case. It works fine on most ROMs, and remains inactive on others. Delete it if you want, but it should not cause trouble if you leave it alone.
11. Why isn't Google Calendar showing up in my app drawer? The Google Calendar from the Play Store and is a signed application. Uninstall the Market version, and either delete or rename the system/app Calendar.apk to Calendar.apk.bak (or just delete it). Reboot and enjoy.
12. I need immediate help! None of these things solved my problem! You can usually find me on #midnightgapps on IRC. If you aren't familiar with IRC, just click here, enter the chat, then leave me a message. If I don't answer right away, leave me a message and I'll respond when I can, or respond in the thread when I am available again.
13. I have an issue not listed here.If you need to ask for assistance, please post the following things even if you feel that they aren't related to your issue.
Android Version number
ROM type (AOSP/CM/AOKP/PA/PAC/TW)
Gapps version (If using my gapps, please say so)
Zip name and version number
Recovery type and version number
A painstakingly detailed description of the problem

Everyone who downloads it will be my test subjects.
I'll try to finish it up after church.
OK here it is. This version should worked correctly, but as I don't use Touchwiz, I can't be 100% certain.
This version has none of the stock Android apps included, such as calendar and contacts. Those do not work on Touchwiz, so please don't ask. All other Google and Extra apps are included.
Possible issues:
The Dropbox included in this package will probably disable the integration with the Samsung framework, so it will not likely allow syncing from your Samsung account. The app itself should work just fine, though.
I'm not sure if Google Music is going to work or not. Please let me know.
Google Maps may or may not work with Touchwiz as a system app. Please let me know.
I have no idea if Chrome and Google Now will work correctly or not.
This should work for the Stock 4.1.2 ROM odexed or deodexed, as well as 4.2 custom Touchwiz ROMs. Make a full backup before you flash this, so you can restore if something breaks.
Flashing instructions:
Boot into recovery and make a full backup, then reboot.
Uninstall any apps that you wish to use from this package from your phone before you flash.
Clear data and uninstall any updates to system apps that might conflict with this package.
Boot back into recovery and install this package.
If something does not install, or it gives you some sort of trouble, please report the issue here. Be as specific as possible.
MAKE A FULL BACKUP BEFORE FLASHING!

How to report an issue:
List the following things in your post.
Android version
Recovery version
Link me to your ROM
Be as descriptive as possible on what the issue is. Remember that you might need to explain it moreso than normal, since I have not used Touchwiz in a long time. I'm working from memory here on most things, so help me to help you.
Can't wait to give the tW version a spin. Props for all your work on these projects. I'll report any issues I have with the apps I use.

Hey cajun thanks for the tw beta man I'm really liking this cause now I don't have to be installing these inverts individually. Lol
Now straight to work.
My current setup
a) Samsung Galaxy S3
b) Android 4.1.2 "Jellybean"
c) CWM 6.0.3.1
d) Hyperdrive Rls14 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36897687
I followed ur instructions on how to install this down to the last word and the following problems arose:
1) Dropbox and Tango both installed both are force closing as soon as you try to open them.
2)I selected Tunein through the aroma installer and it didn't install.
Now I didn't see any errors while running the installer which is a good thing.
I will see if I can find a solution for the problems I mentioned and update you with what I get.
Update:After trying to fix the above problems by wiping data and cache for Dropbox and Tango I realized that Tunein showed up in my /data/app folder just that it didn't install completely. So I ran the installer again without uninstall the 3 apps and just selecting Dropbox, Tango and Tunein. Now Dropbox didn't install completely, Tango doesn't work again and gives me Error 62; and Tunein installed fine this time.
Update 2:After many attempts to get Dropbox and Tango to work they never did. So I extract those 2 apps and installed them manually and they worked.

That is the last try through aroma installer. Decided to save that log and forward to you to have a look at it.

Did you uninstall any conflicting apps and delete app data for them before installing this?
I'll download your ROM and look to see if something is conflicting with this aroma package to be sure.
Dropbox is the one I'm not surprised by the trouble. Tango shouldn't give any issues, but I'll check it out. TuneIn is a script error, and should be fixed in the next update.

Ok. Well, I'll check out the ROM.zip as soon as it's finished.
Check in /data/app and see if TuneIn.apk is in there. It may just not be showing up in your app drawer.

The log shows a successful installation. The script for those two apps may need to be tweaked since most Touchwiz ROMs have dropbox included. Tango has me completely stumped, though. It should be working flawlessly.
Although it should not matter, the only thing I can think of that would be preventing then from showing up would be the recovery. TWRP is what I do all my testing on, and is what my scripting is based on. CWM should handle all the scripting just fine, though, so I really don't know.

Tiny's Gapps

Anyone know which keyboard tiny uses in his gapps? I Had been using his gapps in his cm10.1 and Pons cm10.2 but am trying out the Evolv 4.4 and am really missing that keyboard. I tried the Google keyboard but it does not seem to change the layout just added gesture. I tried looking in the gapps zip files but nothing popped out. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would appreciated.
Even better Tiny put out a 4.4 gapps!

Better yet, download the core gapps found here:
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=10306
If these are helpful to you, please check out this thread to give credit to the person who put them out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012857
Evervolv has the standard AOSP keyboard I think and I don't know if the core gapps has that keyboard. I have the JB keyboard in my gapps and the play store one may be based on the Kitkat layout. The only reason I added the keyboard to my gapps was to get gesture typing to work.
If you need that older layout, push LatineIME.apk to /system/app and libjni_latinime.so from my gapps to the device.
Thanks Tiny. I was using the core gapps. I was thinking the LatinIme had something to do with it. I always loaded your gapps for the keyboard and lockscreen. Cannot seem to add new icons to the circle on Evervolv.. I even used your gapps on my EVO. You guys are amazing.
Force close of keyboard after copying files over, setting permissions, and rebooting. Guess I will try the play store or just deal with it. Thanks again.

You will have to clear data on the keyboard after flashing a different one or it will just FC.
Core gapps do not include a keyboard.
