[Q] Problems flashing roms with CWM/TWRP - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello, I've been trying to flash a rom and keep getting this error on TWRP:
Updating partition details...
E: Unable to open zip file.
Error flashing zip '/sdcard/update.zip'
Updating partition details...
Failed
I tried downloading a different ROM (ParanoidAndroid, then ParanoidKANGdroid, then CM10), installing from the external SD card instead of the internal one, switching from CWM to TWRP since some people have been complaining about CWM recently, and I just keep getting the same error.
Also, when I try to install the zip file from my computer instead of my phone, it won't let me put the file in any of the SD card's folders, so I'm not sure if that's normal/relevant to the problem. Would installing a custom kernel or trying to partition the SD card help? I don't have an SD card reader unfortunately but I'm pretty sure it's in fat32 format.
Thank you very much!

Whenever I get "bad" (followed by an Android robot on his back with a red shape on his front) while installing it usually just means a bad download.
Re-download to another folder (if you can download FROM your phone directly to your phone) I find that works really well.

Alright, I'll try downloading again, thanks. I have saved it in both the downloads and the ROM folder I created myself with no difference though.

I tried downloading CM10 directly from my phone to my downloads folder and still got the same error.

I had problems flashing a particular rom. Same as your having, I use TWRP. If you read in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2034844 others have same experience. There are some solutions and something about editing a script.
Sorry I can't be more helpful but this was a bit more than I could take.

Thanks! I'll be sure to read through it. No amount of help is too small at this point lol.

If your sd card is 64gig you have to use win util to format it to fat32. Google format 64 gig sd fat.

My card is only 16gigs; do I still have to format it?

You can take out the variable of the MicroSD card and flash from the internal SDcard.

I've tried both; thanks though.

What version of TWRP/CWM are you using?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium

TWRP 2.3.1.0 and CWM 6.0.1.2

Sounds like you are having filesystem corruption issues. I would suggest formatting your internal and/or external sdcards.

I just ordered an sd card reader so I'll check it out, thanks. I don't think I've done anything to corrupt the filesystem though. Do you think it was already corrupted when I bought it?

Stuff happens. Filesystem corruption can be cause by almost anything. Typically it happens when your device random reboots.

This may be off base here, but are you selecting the option in your recovery to "flash update.zip" rather than manually browsing for the ROM Zip?

I've tried choosing the "flash rom" option from the Goo Manager app as well as the "install" option from the recovery menu.

Same Prob, escalated...
I was having the same problem. After some research I found a tip to Delete a portion of coding in the begining of the update-script zip file. Only now it is unable to open and read the zip file. I too was doing from computer via external sd card. Have you gotten any where since?

I've had problem with TF101 flashing. At least i copied the zip files into the internal sdcard from the microsd with the trwp file manager and the problem was solved.

perhaps something was corrupted in the copying process over to your new card. try putting the zip (verified not corrupt, check the md5) on again.
also verify that you are not putting on a file named something.zip.zip
if you have file extensions hidden in windows, and it still says .zip, that means you have a file with an extra .zip on the end of it.
Hi guys. I hate to open an old thread, but figured it was the lesser of 2 evils with the other option being to create a new one.
I am suffering the same problem as the OP, with the slight difference that my issue is solely related to the leedroid rom from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768703
I can safely flash all my nandroid backup roms from clockwork, I can flash the modaco r9 rom i had on there previously. I can flash all the themed zips I have downloaded in anticipation of getting leedroid up and running (they don't work make any difference to my existing rom due to not having leedroid, but they flash fine and then i nandroid after since I was just flashing them to check flashing was working).
The issue is when i try to flash leedroid it just says bad zip. I've downloaded it 4 times, both direct from dropbox and via torrents. I've checked with md5 checker and it's fine. I've unzipped it myself to verify the integrity. I've renamed it to remove the period thinking it might be an extension issue. I've toggled the check signature setting thing. I've run a full file system check on the fat32 partition of my sdcard, i've let it do a full bad sector scan. I'm literally out of ideas.
Edit: In case others stumble upon this, the solution for me was to scrap the partitions on my SD card and start over. I used the proper sdformatter from the official sdcard site to create a FAT partition using up the entire disk, then used gparted to resize that partition leaving 512mb at the end to fit my ext3 in there. The official sdcard formatter leaves 4mb of unallocated space at the start of the disk, I left this there as I didn't want to mess with it. Once my new partitions were setup, I can again flash ROMS from the sdcard. So although there was a proper FAT32 partition on there previously that seemed to be working fine, for some reason it wasn't.

SOLVED.
If you get the message: “Can’t Open /sdcard/******.zip (bad)” when installing:
-Extract the SD, format in computer(fat32)
-copy the .zip in fresh sd
-boot with xRecovery and install.
-reboot
-(may be you get a frozen boot, so do:
-reboot with xRecovery
-wipe full reboot
-Everything’s ok!!
Do extract the SD Card while the phone is still in Recovery? Are there any clearer instructions?

I just encountered this problem a couple days ago. I had to physically take the card out of the phone, put it in a card reader, and then mount the card reader in my pc. I used Windows to format the card to FAT32 (that will erase everything). Once I formatted, the phone was able to read the sd card just fine again.

Clockworkmod recovery not flashing zip files

HI, I have rooted my Desire running stock official Froyo 2.2 and have backed up using nandroid in recovery.
I was trying to install Wake from trackpad/menu zips but clockworkmod does not allow me to flash it. I get the following message
Finding update package....
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /sdcard/menu-to-wake.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted
the sdcard is fine.. Able to create/restore nandroid backups
the files are named xyz.zip and not xyz.zip.zip
I have the signature verification and script errors turned off
The zip file themselves are fine. I can open them from windows and can also extract in windows without any errors
Still i cannot flash the zip while no one else in the thread has reproted any issue in flashing it on their desire. Can someone please help on how to make the clockwork install the zip files??

Hi vpraveenis, I am just curious if you found a resolution for this? I have the same problem, admittedly for a different .zip but the same symptoms. I can flash other zips fine, the zip itself is fine as I can unzip on windows and md5's match, i have toggled the signature verifcation off and run file system checks to make sure my sdcard is ok. Still clockwork can not flash this 1 zip (leedroid) which hundreds of others have flashed fine. I am at my wits end, so if you found a solution to yours, I would be happy to hear it
Did you try to re-download that file again, it may be corrupted.

Yes, apologies I should have mentioned that. I downloaded it 4 different times, and all times the md5 checksums were fine. I even tried different methods of getting the file onto the card, incase there was a level of corruption there. I have used adb push, standard usb mount in windows, taking the card out and using the card reader in my PC, and using andFTP to download it from my ftp server directly to the phone.
I can only think it's a problem with my sd card, so i'm trying a new one now, taking a while to make it a gold card though.

Ok, I went and bought a brand new class 6 16gb lexmark sd card (my unknown class / unknown brand 32gb off ebay was causing me too many hassles anyway). I immediately partitioned it with gparted, then went through the goldcard process. Then dumped clockwork including my nandroid backups and leedroid rom onto there. Reboot into recovery and bam, still get the exact same error, bad zip.
I've also tried full factory wipe before hand. I also get the same error on the latest radio ROM from the leedroid guy's drop box. Not having much luck.
That's weird, Can you flash other zip file? :\
Maybe change to Amora Recovery will help?
Try Amon Ra or check if the ClockWork has "File Integration Verify" option and disable it. It should help. Some custom modifications do not pass through integrity verification at recovery state.
Regards
need some help- while trying to flash new leedroid rom get this message:
writing boot.img
assert failed: write_raw_image ("/tmp/boot.img"."boot")
E:Error in /sdcard/LeeDroid_2.3d_A2SD.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted
is there a solution?

I couldn't get AmonRa up and running, tried using unrevoked or whatever to flash it on there, but just wouldn't complete. Clockwork is a fair bit easier since you can just copy on a file and name it update.zip and you are done.
In regards to other zips, it seems I can flash any "theme" based zip, just not any RUU zip such as new ROMs or radios. This probably implies my card is not a gold card, but I have been through the gold card process 3 times, all without fail, so I dunno why it wouldn't be one.
I've confirmed that I can flash these files from my 2gb gold card that I originally made. So there is definitely no zip corruption.

Hi there i was just bobbing my self lmao because i had the same problem and dint backup or anything and i dint no wat to do, Buy... i found a solution.. I just put a different sdcard in my computer and put the rom on there whih i was trying to install then i placed that in my phone and then tryed and it worked..

big problems...i think i'm sinking fast

Did everything the way I normally do when flashing a new rom.
Now when I attempt to load any ROM from my sd card, I get this message:
Installing system files ...
E:Error in /sdcard/Incredible Files/SkyRaider_33_Sense_Final.zip
(Status 0)
Installation aborted.
I also try to do a restore from my nandroid backups and it ALWAYS "freezes". Now the only thing I can do is boot into recovery but nothing after that. I've read through a lot of material and know how to do most things, however I'm by no means an expert and now I feel like I've caused irreversible damage.
HELP?
sounds to me like your rom got corrupt during the download, i would try to download it again after deleting the file off your SD card.
did you download it from a PC or from your inc? i have seen people get corrupt files when downloading straight from the inc, its best to use a PC to download the roms
you can use the mount menu in recovery to mount your usb storage if you dont have an adapter to read the microsd, this will let you replace the possibly corrupt rom with a fresh zip
My original sd card has become unreadable by both my incredible and by my sd card reader. I have another one and loaded all of the backed up files I had on the old one. I've tried downloading the ROM through ROM Manager as well as placing the file on the new sd card and both do the same thing.
I honestly have no idea what to do now and am worried that not everything I need was transferred to the new sd card.
I just want to be able to load ANY ROM and I'm willing to reset/wipe anything and everything but I don't think there's anything I can do at this point....
well there is nothing that needs to be on the SD card at all aside from the backup or [rom].zip file you are trying to flash
have you tried installing a different rom with recovery? maybe virtous rom?
also what version of clockwork recovery are you running?

Try to format/partition the sd via recovery. The new clockwork has this method (haven't tried it and don't know if it works) and the alternate RA does, too. I've used that one and know it works. Try that (leave the defaults, which is 512mb sd-ext, 32mb or similiar swap, I think, and the rest as FAT32).
boot into hboot (vol down and power when device is off)
what hboot version and baseband are you running?
I dont think the sd card is the problem
I wiped the dalvik and batt stats and for whatever reason tried again to reinstall the ROM and it went through this time.
Everything seems to be working as normal. Man was that one weird ass experience.

Cannot reboot phone...

PLEASE HELP...I am new to this so I hope it is simple. I recieved instruction on how to flash the SNS v1.3 From this Thread on this site.
Sinister Rom [RLV3]-5/12/11|[! Post what you want to see in version 4 !]
Prior to this I performed a Nandroid Backup after flashing Amon RA from ROM Manager. I wiped everything except for the SD Card and attempted to flash the ROM. After an unsuccessful try I tried to reboot phone and it just keeps going to the Bootloader Screen. I also noticed that the PC36IMG.zip file is not being loaded now. It says that image is not found. I have tried several new PC36IMG.zip files from the site and put them on the root of my SD Card using the USB-MB toggle option and it still says wrong or no image found. WHAT do I do? Don't want my phone to die and be bricked...
HELP PLEASE
I think y oi r problem is you dont have an os, try putting a rom on sd card, on bootloader select recovery and flash zip, then look for rom zip file and flash

Maybe bad download. But, yeah, sounds like you don't have an OS. YOu need to find a good one to flash which should contain everything. Good place to start for noobs would be the new GB leak. It's here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038701
Sounds like you have SD card problem though. Pull the recovery.log using adb:
adb pull /tmp/recovery.log <path on your comp where you want it to go>.txt and post it.

You should really know what adb is before you rooted your phone..
Here is Android Debug bridge(ADB)
Now onto your problem. If you have the option try to use a different micro SD or a different way of transferring a rom to your card.
When I transfer a rom to my micro sd via a cheap ebay adapter I receive that same error. But when I transfer right to my phone or through the adapter that came with my phone it works fine.(I have a SD slot on my computer most newer ones do)
THANKS TO EVERYONE!!! Needed to Wipe SD Card, Partition SD CARD, and reflash ROM...WORKING GREAT NOW!!!
Just curious, but why did you feel the need to double post this... .in the same forum, no less?
And good deal getting it fixed....

Can't Mount Sd Card in CWM

So i went to flash a ROM and now it says while flashing that the flash was aborted because the system can't mount the SD card. I'm using the newest CWM and have flashed stuff before. Not sure what to do, it wont let me make backups, restore, or flash anything.

Ya i went into the menus and manually unmounted and then remounted the SD card but that didn't do anything. I used the typical three finger method to boot into CWM like i always do.
i think
I believe this has something to do with the way in which the SD card is formatted I also cannot mount in to usb storage in CWM i get an E: error
Have you guys tried to "Reboot recovery" from the "Adavnced" menu in CWM, and then try to flash the ROM?
I've had this happen before, it was a formatting problem. The easiest fix I found was to back up SD-card data on your pc, reformat the card from the Android system, then copy your data back over. CWM should be able to mount your card now.
I had a problem with the mount dropping mid flash it was my sd for some reason was chipped I always keep backup files

Just flash another version of CWM and u'r done. I faced this problem after flashing Siyah Kernel v2.3 which includes CWM 5.0, and I tried all the methods online; formatting, error-checking, etc... nothing succeed!
Finally I flashed another kernel (Which includes CWM 4.0) and it worked fine.
Thanks!
Same thing happened to me just now... found this thread.. pushed new CWM in ODIN - Worked like a charm.. Fixed in 2 minutes..
Flashing another CWM (ACS recovery this time...) via Odin did not fix the issue. Going to try the format /sdcard fix and see... argh!
*Edit* aaaand that didn't work either. WTF... I literally just got this phone 2 hours ago... brand new.
delete the .androidsecure folder on your sd that worked for me formatting wont work if you put your files on the same with me because i always copied that folder along too
