Just got two of these for my children - Desire General

I just got two of these for each of my boys and I want to root and rom them. I have rooted and rom'd mine and my wifes Galaxy SII's so I understand the process in general. The issue with me on this is I don't exactly know what to pick with this older phone!
They currently have 2.2 on them. I wanted to update it but since they are only going to use them as 'play' devices and not as talk devices. The ROM I put on them doesn't have to have all the bells and whistles I suppose. I doubt I need ICS unless it has obvious benefits like battery life and whatnot.
EDIT: I don't have extra SD cards and I'm reading I need them to make a Goldcard thing. Is there away around this?
HBoot versions of 1.06, which means I can't use Revolutionary. I'm looking at AlphaRev right now but that one seems complicated.

UPDATE. Tried unrevoked3 and got the failed root, firmware too new error. What's the next best for hboot 1.06?
Becoming not worth my time. They are only going to play games on these things...I don't want to buy a couple sdcards for these to do the goldcard thing. It appears that I have to downgrade to 2.1 and then do unrevoked. I just really wanted to remove bloatware more than anything...Also, it's a US Cellular branded phone, if that means anything.

You can use revolutionary. If your hboot version is 1.06, then that means you have a CDMA Desire. Select HTC Desire CDMA on the revolutionary page, and s-off your device.

Well that explains a bunch! Thanks!
Ran Revolutionary but I have to get an sd card before I continue I suppose.

The SD cards will come in handy since the phone lacks adequate internal memory. You'll want to set up apps to sd somehow or I bet the kids have the phone full the first day. I used link2sd from the Play store with CM7.

Hi, I suggest to use CyanogenMod 7.2.0.1 Stable INT2SD-S by Proz0r, read carefully the instruction and check about CMDA issue. You will have plenty of space for apps and games!

I would use last nightly-Build.
there are no new features, only (sometimes important) Bugfixes.

Rooting HTC Desire

Hi all, I'm new to the desire, is there an easy method of rooting this phone, similar to some of the root apps that are used on the droids? I have read the tutorial on this site regarding making a gold card, using a hex edit , etc etc, Is all this required or are there easier methods of doing this. Also any recommended froyo 2.2 roms for this phone? thanks
you could try unrevoked2 thats what i had to do as the other way would not do the update.zip part at the end kept getting an error.
you will need the android sdk installed and the usb drivers ( i had bother updating the driver but got it in the end by pointing it to the file not by using the auto update )
i use leedroid no problems and fast
hope this helps
Thanks for the info, will give it a try
Yup... Unrevoked3 is the way forward.. I spent days fretting about rooting my desire but unrevoked made it so easy I was pleasantly surprised.. It pretty much does the whole thing for you with 1 mouse click.. Even installs the clockworkmod recovery for you as well..
I was quite annoyed its not mentioned on the main sticky thread as it would have saved me hours mucking about with outdated methods of rooting..(which didn't work for me anyway ! )

I've been scared about rooting for months. Used unrevoked3 tonight with absolutely no problems. Now running MCR R5. It was a piece of piss
do you know which version of HBOOT and Android this is with?
I'm about to get mine back from HTC repair and like last time I got it back it will be with HBOOT 0.92 and Froyo (Android 2.2)
Would like to avoid having to bother downgrading HBOOT if necessary... I've used unrevoked3 in the past with HBOOT 0.8x and Android 2.1 and it was a piece of piss

[Q] Help Rooting/downgrading CDMA Desire with HBOOT 1.06

I have looked all over XDA, as well as Google, but I've been unable to find and answer. From my research, I've found that with my HBOOT version - 1.06 - my phone is unrootable. What I haven't seen is anyone trying to downgrade the HBOOT to .9x. My phone was rooted with this version, but for some reason unrEVOked 3.32 didn't turn the security off. Now I'm stuck with the sh*tty stock HTC Sense rom. I have tried installing a Alltel (I have US Cellular) 2.1 recovery rom, to no avail. Is it possible to downgrade the HBOOT, with rooting? I understand that the unEVOked team is working on a fix, but I'm getting impatient. (I don't blame them, they are doing this out of the goodness of heart in their spare time. Anything they do - and have done - is greatly appreciated.) I want to install an aftermarket rom so I can underclock the CPU and save battery, as well as free up some space for apps.
im having the same issue with my new desire =[
No. You can't downgrade, you can't use another carrier (that's what CDMA is all about), you can't do anything. You have to wait for a fix.
Damn. i cant wait for Unrevoked to find a way...
/sigh
If only I lived in Europe, where the GSM carriers don't suck @ss. I've noticed the GSM Desire owners have a lot more activity then their CDMA cousins. I should have known better then to use an official HTC roms to upgrade. I made the same mistake with jailbreaking my iPod Touch, a few times.

rooting my desire my experience

Well after reading that it is unlikely that the gsm desire wasn't going to receive full gingerbread, I decided to root mine.
I haven't bothered with rooting since my G1 as I have been happy with the desire.
Firstly I copied the SD card contents, formatted with fat32. Then added a 1.9GB ext3 with partition manager 10.
Rooting method
I used the unrevoked method. Note to others, you do need to install HTC sync and then un -install. I found that I had to install the modified usb driver several times before unrevoked would proceed with install. But in the end all went well and I attained root.
Roms.
My hboot is 0.93.
I first tried cyangenmod but it just boot looped, I think it was because I hadn't S-off, so I was using the wrong hboot, I couldn't be bothered with s-off so will stick to ROMs which work with 0.93.
I have tried Oxygen Aosp Rom. Very nice Rom, fast with minimal apps, but you just add what you want.
My current ROM is the leedroid desire HD port. I like this indeed with all the bells and whistles of HTC sense. I also added the sense 3.0 add on, quite nice.
So that where I am now enjoying some new features to my desire, which I must admit has not lost any of its attraction since I first bought it 18 months ago.
I thought I had forgotten how to do this root malarky, but it is a lot simpler than when I had the G1, saying that though it was never too difficult if you read the instructions properly.
Andy
root in one click
Root is very simple on desire, got it on the very first one kick
yeah, once youve figured everything out its loughably easy. got my desire back from repair on tuesday and it didnt even take half an hour to free it from the bonds of the branded stock rom and return it to its full cm7 glory
performed my first ever root a few days ago on my Desire and was surprised how easy it was.
i just followed the guide i found on here (somewhere, can't remember where now) and had GingerVillain 2.7 installed in no time.
i'm no technical whizz, but as long as you can follow instructions it's a breeze.
(now just gotta try to understand what the hell a kernel is/does)
And with this new method it's become much easier:

much easier to s-off i concur, but for just root with s-on then unrevoked is probably still slightly easier..
I had issues with the drivers first time I ran it through too - it kept trying to windows update search and by that time unrevoked had timed out waiting
Yeah, I used revolutionary the first time. Running cm7 now and loving it

rooted, flashed and s off my pvt4 desire few days ago with all the guide in xda. awesome forum. thanks a lots although i faces some heart beat moment...
I did mine the other day, when I was doing the s-off bit, it sat there for half an hour just after the "brick" warning part... I had to pull the plug in the end. Fortunately stock Rom fixed it again. Twitchy was an understatement! Thought i'd killed it...
Turned out to be the usb on my laptop causing the error. Tried it on another pc and it was sweet as a nut.
Long story short, I've ordered a class 10 card so I'm just trying different roms for now until that arrives. Will probably stick to LeeDroid as I like sense.
Great guide made this very easy (apart from the sphincter clenching part mentioned earlier). Thanks to all on xda
Im having trouble with some ROM's, I get the "Status error 7" when trying to update from recovery, I do a full reset/wipe etc first ofcourse.
Some ROM's install fine, I dont get it o0

Change recovery to AmonRA or one from my sig if you're S-OFF.
Similar experience here, using unrevoked, tried sense 3 rom's, cm7 and now on XJ's MIUI.
Really brought some life back into the old phone.
Thanks to all at XDA.

maybe you should change the HBOOT

Wiping the evo

I have a launch day evo. I rooted it about a month later. I've been flashing roms ever since. But the past 6 months or so it seems that with physical age that the phone just isn't as fast as it used to be. I used a co workers stock evo today and it was so fast already! To me it didn't need to be rooted.
Now whenever I flash roms I always do a full wipe. I'm not an app person (on Android at least.) and don't have a partitioned sd card (wouldn't know how to do that if I wanted to). I just re download the basics like pandora, xda, swiftkey etc.
Now for my question, is there a way to completely start over from a clean slate? Do I need to update certain root files? My phone just seems so sluggish with out me having anything on it. Oh and I'm on classic rom right now.

Yep. Easy. Run the RUU for your phone. That'll take it back to out of the box.
This link may be dated, but you're using a released ate EVO, so this should tell you everything
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spr...U2Mi1hNWU0LTRlNjEtYWMyOC1lZmU4ODg1ODc1ODI&ifq
BTW, you don't have to unroot first.
And then I can use one of the root methods to re root my phone?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
If your already s-off via unrevoked or revolutionary then you are already s-off. Just run a ruu to reset your software and start clean.
Not Sent
Since you probably didn't run unrevoked forever, running an RUU will probably put you s-on. I'd RUU to either the last FroYo release to run unrevoked or at least pre hboot 2.18 so that rooting is easier. Go for hboot 2.16 (GB) or 2.10 (FroYo).
Remember that your phone is older, so running an RUU might not make an incredible difference. If you've had your Evo that long then you probably could upgrade. Maybe you're holding out for the same reason I am - there's nothing that much better out yet.
I'd RUU version 2.16 or older, once phone is reset, reroot and enjoy.
But hardware is older, it maybe just getting worn out and may need a good ole fashioned replacement. These things arent designed to last forever../

[Q] S-OFF on hboot 0.80

Hello
I've been asked by my dad to root his HTC Desire, to remove bloat and make it faster and last longer, etc etc.
But i've run into some problems. (Let me just say i'm not a complete noob at rooting, i've rooted Desire HD, EVO 3D and a Prime tablet before, and flashed roms etc etc)
I've successfully downgraded it from Android 2.2 with HBOOT 1.02 (i think thats the one) to Android 2.1 with HBOOT 0.80. And i've succesfully rooted it.
Now i want to S-OFF the device, but Revolutionary doesn't support the HBOOT 0.80, it requires 0.93 or 1.02.
I've also read about the AlphaRev S-OFF method, but thats super old and it even says to use Revolutionary.
My end plan is to install LeeDroid rom (My dad wants to keep HTC Sense, but want it fast, and LeeDroid was the best rom i could find for this, or is there something better?).
In LeeDroid it also says it needs to create a ext-3 partition with ROM Manager, but i can't even find ROM Manager on the market, is that because of the fact that i'm currently running android 2.1, or?
I hope some good people out here can help me with my problems

First off: Don't use "bump" posts after just 10 hours. This is not "Instant Help".
Alpharev may be old, but works fine.
Don't even think about using ROM Manager, it will break your phone. Create the ext partition with gparted.
I don't know about Sense Roms, but i think you can use just any. Depends on which version you prefer. Best for performance and battery life should be the lower ones, like LeeDroid.

I quote everything.
I have S-OFFed my Desire with Alpharev and encountered no problem at all.
a) use alpharev
b) upgrade to 2.3 ruu and use revolutionary
c) rtfm made by Bortak

Revolutionary would be the easiest option. A few clicks and your phone is rooted, S-off and has clockworkmod recovery.
