[Q] GB to JB - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hey guys quick question..
A friend brought over his SGS2 cause he wants Jellybean but he is still on Gingerbread, Im 75% sure you cant go straight to JB from GB, if thats true, do I have to flash stock ICS or any ICS rom before getting to JB?

There is no reason you can't go straight to JB. It's just flashing another ROM.
Sent from my beastly Galaxy S 2.

Yep, found an older thread saying the same after some more searching right after posting this thread.

Make sure you update the radio to something compatible to ics/jb first.....I do think that matters....

Flash UVLE1 or UVLH1 radio first for best cell reception.

Whenever I upgrade from GB to JB I flash an ICS AOSP-based ROM first just to be on the safe side.

Won't doing a clean flash negate the importance of the ROM that was previously flashed? I have confidence in TWRP when I wipe data, cache and system, that in fact it does so

I also use TWRP and I trust it completely. I just like upgrading one version at a time.

Sorry for the bump fellas but this saves me from making a new thread:
I currently have a GB Rom (revenge of macnut) and would like to update my phone since it is over due. I love the Rom I currently have but little glitches have been causing it to lock up.
If I wanted to go to a JB rom, would I need to go to a stock rom first or not? Wasn't sure if I needed to put on a stock Jb rom or if I can go right into a rom with a clean wipe.
Thank you for any replies!

As long as you have the proper radio, you can flash directly to whatever you want. You MUST fully wipe of course.

you know it's been a while when I have to ask what a radio is? I haven't found a good FAQ yet but once I find the rom I want I'm sure the proper radio is recommended as well. is it like klies or cwm?
anyone have a link to a good how to for this install with radio and rom included.

There are double sounds showing when choosing ringtone, etc. Strange for a official build no? Also I notice the screen touch sound is the older GB one i think.
Anyone know of a hack to get integrated tether to work?

Yeah its gone, But I think Its only cosmetic and never an actual bug. People have OS super high and get 4-6 hours of screen time. I dont think it has anything to do battery.
So does this mean an actual ota is in the near future? And if so can we update to it and get root back? Or am I getting ahead of myself? Lol

Yeah freaking right! I wish! I only get 2 hours screen on time at most. Even GB but I think it's because Sprint just sucks. I dunno but it's depressing. I know I got better battery life before but mo matter what I flash, full wipes and all I still get bad battery life lately.

That's because that's what most everybody gets, and that number is really pretty good. nobody will get 6 hours of screen on time with a stock battery...probably not even with an extended battery. I think the Android OS bug is real, at least I've noticed pretty big decrease since going to these ics alphas. Since I've tried the leaked official...battery has been tons better.

[Q] question about installing roms

Hi all, this is my first post and i hope to take advantage from it.
I've done a lot of research in the android development forums. The first thing i did to my phone was to get it rooted. So far so good, i followed the instructions and everything went ok.
Now i want to install a ROM. Thing is there is a lot of terminology i do not quite understand and i want to know for sure how this process is done correctly. In theory i know how to install a ROM but some disclaimers keeps me from doing it.
The main question here is, my phone has to meet some prerequisites in order to install a ROM? I mean, the android version of my phone, baseband version, kernel version and build number necessarily need to have the same characteristics from the ROM i will be flashing? For example, Team Kang's Juggernaut base band version is T989VKID mine is T989UVKL1, the android version is 2.3.5, mine is 2.3.6 and so on. That basically is it. I do not want to mess up my phone but at the same time i wanna enjoy those great roms.
Thanks in advance and i wish a happy valentine's day to all
Download ROM manager. Pick install from sd card. Wipe data and cache. Pick the ROM you downloaded. Just make sure you only install roms from this forum
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
The answer to your question is basically no. Roms don't change your baseband. So that doesn't matter. If your on 2.36 and you install a 2.35 ROM you'll just be on 2.35. But in the case of a kickass ROM that would be just fine.

instead of using rom manager, I would suggest doing everything from the CWM recovery itself. The manual way is always better and you encounter less problems along the way..
i.e. backup/restore isn't complete. didn't wipe everything clean... etc.

I could be wrong but I think the last version of CWM wont let you make backups to the internal but you can flash from the internal. But the newest touch version that just came out a few weeks ago does have internal suppoert for backups so you have to flash the latest one. And I would listen to them when they say not to use rom manager there are far too many problems with it. Also the latest version of juggs is 4.1 and that is 2.3.6. I would use that one. Good luck

Yes before you flash make a nandroid backup in ClockworkMod recovery. If you don't like aokp (highly doubt you'll have this issue) just boot back to recovery and restore nandroid.
EDIT make sure and grab darkside superwipe and cachewipe first. Use these instead of cwm's wipe functions. Superwipe before rom flash cachewipe after any flash. It will save you from a lot of bugs.

Yes you should upgrade to MB1 4.1.2

Everybody should upgrade to MB1. i have rooted stock rom LJ7 4.1.1 before with cwm and just upgraded to MB1 4.1.2 .. i wasn't sure whether i should stay with 4.1.1 or not because i didn't want to mess up my phone but i'm glad i decided to upgrade it... My phone is so smooth now ..no lag or anything. i didn't even have to root it again after the upgrade. Just go to freeza xda thread. If your phone is rooted stock rom with cwm like mine.. just do the following below..
1. Download freeza Odexed MB1 zip and MB1 firmware zip. Then put them on you external sdcard. Boot to CWM
2. Wipe cache, wipe dalvik
3. Flash Firmware
4. Flash ROM
5. Reboot
BAM .. Your phone will be faster and everything will run smooth. Even my wifi tethering is still working.
I just want to share that with you guys.. good luck:good:

I had bad luck with MB1 and went back to LJ7. Phone was laggy, especially the animations, and battery life seemed to be worse. Tried both the stock OTA as well as the custom ROMs, and both dirty flashes as well as clean ones. Will be sticking with LJ7 until the next update.

I have had very bad luck with KT747 kernel. Quadrant scores dropped from around 6100 to 4700 and Antutu scores dropped from around 11,000 to around 8,000. The entire device was laggy, especially animations. No amount of tweaking via the KTweaker app for governor settings and IO settings helped one bit. Even tried using the stock governor and scheduler with no help. I guess my device just doesn't agree with it.
The reason why I will not try TPR is because I simply don't like the theme it comes with and have no time or desire to mess with Morphology. The stock theme and icons are best IMO, and as far as I know, all the devs like to mess with the look of the ROM which isn't to my liking, For example, I hate the transparent dropdown notification pane.

You need to tell us what you did step by step... rooted on stock rom with CWM? did you follow the steps on the first post?
My mantra is if it's not broken, don't fix. My 4.1.1 is working just fine, great battery life etc, so i see no need to update to MB1. All i did was flash the MB1 modem just to have the latest radio.
I see nothing in 4.1.2 to bother with.

I am rooted with a custom recovery, TWRP, but stock. Accept the update, it will reboot phone and try and install and obviously fail. That's it.

Epic 4G Touch - Constantly Rebooting!

Hey guys,
I purchased this phone today, went home and immediately rooted the phone.
Everything went fine, until I tried flashing a custom recovery than the problem occurred,
I'm on a FL24 basebad with 4.0.4, and every time my phone boots 10 seconds later it restarts.
What's going on?
I rooted the phone with Odin, once rooted I installed mobile Odin and flashed a customer "Kernel / Recovery" now the phone constantly reboots.
Install the stock kernel.

Well the kernel I flashed was 0.4.0, I heard that one has reboot issues so I flashed 0.3.0 and it's working great.
The only thing I can't figure out now is how to flash CWM, keeps taking me to the download screen when booting into "recovery".

To boot to recovery
Vol up plus power and hold
Once the splash screen shows, release power and continue to hold Vol up.
You will get to recovery.

I must not have been holding it long enough, appreciate the reply.
How come E4GT ROMS are so large in size, back when I had an EVO and Optimus roms were about 100MB, E4GT are about 500mb?
Well sounds like the recovery was either flashed wrong or is defective for whatever reason..
Here is how to root that version by qb77king. He is very good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqmKN2ewatk&feature=youtube_gdata_player.....
here is a video for the recovery http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kb63ldWtnoM&feature=youtube_gdata_player
So I'd like to help but need to know more info to go by. Did you enable USB debugging when you flashed the recovery? Anyways go ahead and go to stockroms.net. there you can find a stock ROM to flash your phone with unless its virgin or boost.
I recommend just getting stock jellybean or wild for the night cyanogen.. I know you just bought it but I can tell you its worth it ICS is horrible,Too many problems. You can actually find a jellybean ROM that is already rooted when u flash it.. Anyways download the android root toolkit from the market... This will save your phone's root

Hey Trytohoaxme. So as of right now there is no cmw for ICS. There is Agat recovery which is based off of cwm that is for either a ICS ROM or jelly bean ROM. I have cmw that is a jingerbread kernal that interfaces with CyanogenMod 10.1 which has 4.2.2 jellybean. If you flash clockworkmod it won't work with a stock rom your phone won't be able to boost up..
Graydiggy u are pretty rude. I hope to god your mom raised you better. Show some respect on this forum, XDA is a place for positive feedback, not negative people who criticize others who which are naive and conceited.

Who's conceited?
I'm pretty sure he's just trying to help and avoid misinformation, no need to get offended, bud... And the op stated the issue was already resolved.
He never asked about cwm specifically, just a custom recovery. On TW ICS I've used Agat's, Ruj's, and Slesh's kernels/recoveries without issue. There's really no need for EL26/CWM tar unless you want to play it safe (which i do) going from TW to AOSP or vise versa.
And yes stock TW ROMs are huge. AOSP ROMs end up around 240 megs (give or take) including Gapps.

Well when people like you give incorrect information like you are currently doing, or makes everything more complicated than it should be, again, something you are doing, I will be rude. ICS has had source for a very very long time and has had a CWM for a long time. JB does not. I have been here for a long time and there is a reason I have recognized contributor. I may be rude, but when someone else risks someone's expensive phone, sometimes it takes being rude. If you can't handle it, oh well.
The reason for my response was because the issue was solved and the stockroms.net is not a site that I trust. We have a repository for all of our stock ROMs.

I already upgraded from ICS FL24 to JB GB27.
The problem I have as of now is, I don't know which roms are compatible with my device?
I'm on JB 4.1.2 GB27, does that mean I can only flash GB27 roms?

You can flash any ROM for the E4GT... You are in the right forums for that.
Oh okay, I was asking because the thread title of most ROMs say "[ROM] FL24 Kuban Kernal" ETC..
Since I'm on GB24, I can still use EL26 ROMs and all?

Just read the instructions for each ROM. They will tell you exactly what is needed.
