3G on T-Mobile via 1900MHz Band - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I recently switched from AT&T to T-Mobile, and like the rest of us was suffering without 3G due to our lack of compatibility with the 1700MHz WCDMA that T-Mobile uses. One of my friends (a T-Mobile employee), however, informed me that it is indeed possible to get 3G by using the 1900MHz band, which T-Mobile is currently re-farming to support WCDMA. This trick is simple and easy, and I've had success with it thus far, albeit only in one location as of yet. There is a downside, however... as long as the trick is in place (as long as your phone is set to "WCDMA only" below), you cannot connect to EDGE. In other words, in an area where there is no 1900MHz 3G coverage, this process must be reversed to fall back to EDGE. As such, you may lose connection randomly and be completely unaware of it for hours, and I will mock you openly for attempting to blame me if you lose your job because you missed a call from your boss, lose your girlfriend because you stopped texting her, or lose your bacon because your remote bacon-protection app couldn't connect.
Remember, this is in the testing phase. It WILL get better over time and hopefully one day we won't even have to consider whether a phone supports 1700MHz... for now, though, report your findings below, preferably with location, signal strength/type, and down/up speed.
==PROCEDURE==​
Go to dialer and enter *#*#4636#*#*
In the menu that pops up, tap "Phone Information"
Scroll down to the menu labelled "Set preferred network type" (it should be the first one) - this will likely be set to WCDMA preferred
Change it to WCDMA only
Switch to your main Settings app, then navigate to "Mobile Networks" (under "More..." by your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth)
Tap "Network Operators" and wait for the search to complete
Tap T-Mobile if it appears in the list
Once the phone has acquired a signal, you can return the Network Mode setting to WCDMA Preferred. Your phone should now switch back and forth between EDGE and HSPA+ fairly reliably.
===My Results===​
At my home (approx. Colfax and Yosemite in Aurora, CO) I get 0-2 bars, mostly 3G but some H+ if I'm holding my phone and moving around, and 2-3 bars H+ if I set my phone down. Speedtest results range between 4 and 10 Mbps, with around 90ms ping. I've been keeping my phone set down with wireless tethering enabled, and it's been 100% usable thus far.
--Update--
Having used it daily for a few weeks, I'm pleased to report that there is moderate to good connectivity to at least 3G in most places. I still find myself on EDGE regularly, but I usually can get a WCDMA connection. Now, however, I'm annoyed because I exceeded 5GB data usage and am being throttled to below-EDGE speeds, which defeats the purpose of having 3G. >_<

I'll test this later tonight. I'd be cool with 3G or H+ if it works. I have a T-Mob pay-by-the-day sim card that I'd like to use to tether my Nexus 7 to when I'm traveling (which is fairly rare).

I'm new to all this but how is this different from changing the APN settings?

This didn't work for me, Portsmouth, NH. It picked up the T-Mobile network in Network Operators but when I tried to select it it took forever and then said unable to connect, failed to register. Attempted a few times on a ucdlk3 stock based custom rom (Intergalactic II) and also on stock rooted.
Probably just not in a good location for this to work.

Playing With Radio Bands...Odd Finding.

OK, so I was playing around with my advanced radio menu (*#*#4636#*#*) and I found something odd (or so it seems to me, maybe someone with more knowledge could correct me). I went into the Phone information tab. It shows you some statistics, as anyone who's enters it knows, one of which is your network type. Mine rests on UMTS:3 (3G), of course, unless I run a ping test in which time it goes to HSPAP:15 (as it should).
Anyway, I decided to press the menu button and pressed "select radio band". I live in the US, so I assumed maybe since "automatic" is set by default, maybe I could play around with it and select USA. I did, waited for it to take, pressed the "turn radio off" button, waited about 5 minutes, then turned it back on. The results are what I found odd.
At that point, my phone only connected to Edge network, and would not switch above that to even 3G. Switched it back to automatic and I reconnected to HSPA:15. Should this be a normal effect?
I'm kind of curious and may select each band, one by one, and see what type of results are found.
EDIT-
Automatic connects normally (not sure which band it is selecting by default)
USA only connects to Edge network
EURO loses all connectivity and finds no networks (T-Mobile, Simple, etc)
JAPAN loses all connectivity and finds no networks
AUS loses all connectivity but finds AT&T network
AUS2 loses all connectivity but finds AT&T network
I set the radio to AUS just for kicks but afterwards whenever I go back to "'set radio band"' the menu is blank and I can't restore the "'automatic"' setting again, so be careful.
Luckily I have a recent Nandroid backup that I'm restoring from right now.
Weird and too bad we can't force it to a certain frequency like 850mhz or something.

My old Samsung Wave allowed this. I would lock it to 850mhz 3G Wish the Nexus had this option too.

That's another thing I can't seem to figure out how to do on this phone..view the current frequency it is using or force it to use a certain one....I've searched for third party apps to do this and the service menu but nothing...

Happened to me too. Scared me. I had to click the tab that said CDMA preferred and change it to GSM only, then back and it worked. Ended up having to reboot to get a data signal again though.
When data loads, it only shows :15. I'm not sure if that means HSPA+:15? In which case, it isn't achieving HSPA+:21..

AUS network should connect to the 900MHz frequency while AUS2 connects to 850MHz.
Customers that use Telstra Next-G (which is Australia's fastest 3G/H+ network) select AUS2 and get much greater network speeds. I believe this is the same frequency as AT&T in the USA.
Other operators such as Vodafone AU and Optus use the 900MHz frequency as do most Euro networks.

[Q] Note 2 not auto switching to 4G?

Hi guys, I'm plenty familiar with the Note II having had mine since October release. I'm having an issue where I will be in a solid 4G coverage area (at my home) and my phone will stay in 2G mode.
There is a problem with either the tower or the phone, I'm leaning toward tower because my wife has my old Sensation 4G which is also staying on 2G. Have any of you encountered/noticed that your phone stays in 2G even though you are in a 4G coverage area? For me either on the Sensation or Note II, I just pick WCDMA, 4G pops in and works great. The only problem is that I have to remember to put it back on auto when I leave the area. I looked up and attempted the cell codes for making the phone prefer 4G, but without success there. Also my phone picks up 4G automatically when I'm at work, so again leaning toward tower (but how and why the tower can control this I have no idea).
I also noticed some threads claiming wifi calling would detect wireless networks nearby and disable 4G. I'm leaning towards BS on that because 1. my wi-fi is almost always turned off (true unlimited 4G plan), and 2. when I disable wifi calling all together it still exhibits the same behavior.
I'm running out of ideas - any help is appreciated!

In settings>more settings>mobile networks>network mode:
You should ALWAYS be set to GSM/WCDMA (Auto mode)
This will automatically get you the best data signal available at your location. If you only get 2G in some locations, that's normal. You can try calling TMO support and have them check your address to see if you SHOULD have 4G at that location. If you really want to try to see what is going on, install an app called Open Signal Maps form the Play store. Among other useful things, it will geolocate the towers you are connected to complete with distance and mapped street address.
Where I live I only ever get 2 or 3 bars of 2G data. I use the TMO wifi calling app for all my calls and texting. This is only way I can get reliable service at home.

Thanks for replying vouty. When I switch from auto mode to WCDMA I have 4 full bars. That's the funny part. Speedtest is giving me around 12Mbps down 3 up on average (I live right by the tower - like .5 mile), so there is for sure something strange happening. If I keep wifi on it really isn't an issue, but I prefer to not mess with wifi and just keep it in 4G while at home, but as frustrating as this problem is, the phone refuses to switch from 2G on it's own. Once I toggle from AUTO to WCDMA, and then back to auto - it will stay on 4G. It's almost as if I am waking it up and causing the phone to re-detect the signal.

Is it possible to disable LTE on AT&T using an AOSP ROM?
I've tried the rat restriction method and the wap.cingular apn and neither worked.

No. Not yet anyway. So far the rat restriction works only on stock TW. As far as wap.cingular, I have noticed that it no longer works either. I think AT&T did something that seemed to disable it.

AT&T effing sucks. They let iPhone disable LTE but not us? Makes no sense.

My LTE toggle on CM10 works fine using the UCDLK3 modem (or whatever it is). The settings update from "WCDMA only" to "LTE/WCDMA/GSM" when I toggle it (just to confirm). I haven't updated to CM10.1 yet, but last I tested it the LTE toggle did not work.
On CM10, I did have to go into Settings and find the Mobile Networks option (its on the same page you enable Data Roaming) and select an AT&T network once. The toggle would not work if I selected "Select automatically". My phone is also unlocked using the dialer code that was posted for ICS 4.0 ROMs - not sure if this matters.

Now go back and choose the wap.cingular APN.

Interesting so you just have to do the network operator thing? I've gone into that menu before and tried to check 2g and it never let's me, but I've never gone into network operators section. Will try tomorrow!

Holy cow it worked broseph! I went into Network Operators. It took about 2 minutes to load the list, then showed three AT&Ts and a T-Mobile. I picked the first AT&T.
Then I tested 2g by putting a check mark in the force 2g box, and sure enough, it worked. I then chose GSM/WCDMA preferred, and sure enough, it forced HSPA+ without even having to choose the wap.cingular APN (in fact, I am using the "phone" APN).
Any downsides to selecting the network operator that way? I'm pretty sure AT&T does not roam onto T-Mobile in any event, so off the top of my head, I can't think of any downside. Would be curious if anybody can think of any downsides to forcing HSPA+ this way.
I personally will probably leave it on LTE most of the time anyways... I just wanted a method to force 2g or HSPA for the few times that I am in a location with weak LTE and the phone kills its battery by switching back and forth between LTE and HSPA. Awesome to finally have one.

Yes, it works. I use this all the time. No need to change APNs either. I've never noticed any problems with this. Once in a blue moon I have to go and redo the network operator part but I've never figured out the exact reason. I have a MicroCell due to poor coverage so I often elect to turn off LTE at home and re-enable when I'm out and about. I've also traveled all over the country and never had an issue I would equate to me manually selecting the network operator.

Thank you. Now I can finally have my "cake and eat it too". Did not even think to try these methods. Thank you for your information. This is so much easier than on stock rom...with the goodness of all that is AOSP.
I just did a test to see idle drain overnight on HSPA and it was actually worse than LTE. On LTE I drop about 7% overnight. Last night on HSPA I dropped 12% in 9 hours. Better battery stats showed 98% deep sleep, too, which is about the same as on LTE.
Anybody else ever try this? Curtis if those results are normal-i would have expected less drain on HSPA.

It actually depends on so much more than your data, there can be apps running in the background, bad signal, etc.

My signal was about -70 dBm (ie, very good) and better battery stats showed 98% deep sleep.
In any event, it was running the same apps as it was the night before when it lost only 7% on LTE. I'm just surprised LTE idle drain was less than HSPA under identical circumstances and was wondering if anybody else experienced the same?

It could be coming from your carrier and their towers. If you really wanna save battery, set it to 2G overnight. Also, 4G is only a battery drainer when it's being used, which it isn't much overnight.

+1. I set to 2G every night. Of course I also always have switched off data and wifi because I don't care about emails and other misc stuff while I sleep. I have slightly better 2G reception in my home than 3G or 4G so this helps even more on battery savings. Cut my battery drain nearly in half (6-8 hours I may get a 3% drain or an absolute max of 4% if I keep snoozing my alarm).
This doesn't work on my AOSP device, I cannot change Network Type or check the "Use 2G Networks only" box. What am I doing wrong?

Wow this works
I think I've always been too impatient to wait 60 seconds for the network operators to load lol
But props im not sure if this is recently discovered but I've spent a lot of time searching for how to disable lte and could never figure it out.
Actually, got it to work. Picking the second "AT&T" from the network operator list allowed me to toggle the other settings. This is a big deal for me because my area has "partial" 4G coverage and my phone prefers a poor, slow 1 bar LTE signal over 5 bar HSPA+, thanks a lot!
wap.cingular will go in and out every 5 minutes and when i enable wifi and turn it off, it takes a good 1-2 minutes to regain connection. (On TW)

Ive recently attained a captivate glide and unlocked it to use on t mobile. Like you would assume at first glance i had an edge connection. Although after messing around with it i realized by going to
Wireless and network > Mobile networks > Network operators >Default setup > Manual it gives me the option to choose to connect to att/ tmobile and when i chose tmobile and it registers on the network i get H+ speeds for a few minutes then it just defaults back to edge
is there a way i can keep my phone on H+ at all times because its capable

I have this problem too, but only into my house. Outdoor that´s right. I´ve tested with all modems, and I think the best for me is i927UCLH2.
Which rom, kernel and baseband do you use??
I´ve done some tests with my glide and my mother´s galaxy chat, in different places. In the street I have H+ and she H, but when we are into any house, under any roof, she still has H, and I only have E.
Does it happen to you?

Doesn't this just sound like a basic signal issue? When the signal gets worse (indoor vs. outdoor) it will drop down to a lower signal.
Also, are you sure Tmo has fully rolled out the 1900mhz band in your area? They may not have complete coverage yet.

i'm sure that it is a phone or a software phone problem, cause i've put my sim card in my last phone (xperia pro) and it has H signal too
i've tested all rogers and att modems, and still have the problem..
Hi, I have a similar prob, I'm in the uk and need it to stay on H+, as it'll drop off to 2g in the house, I've always used miui roms in the past and they have the option to force 3g etc. The only way round this I could find is to use 'pimp my rom' which allows you to select which network you want manually, such as gsm, edge, wcdma etc. Download it, go to tools, device hidden menu, turn off radio, wait, turn radio back on, then quickly select from the drop down box what signal you want, I select wcdma only. If the radio does not come back on, put on flight mode then off again, and will work.. bit annoying but works..
That happen to me too, but not for t mobile, for a operator that use 1900mhz in my country.

LG G3 D855 Odd behaviour when roaming

I have a G3 D855 International (or is it Taiwanese?) version - running the latest stock LG build, which identifies itself as LRX21R.A1440231662, version V20u-TWN-XX, Kernel 3.4.0, Android 5.0.
I have a Three (UK) SIM, and have recently been in California, where I observed some odd behaviour. I'd be glad if anyone is able to comment or explain any of this!
1) I never saw any 4G (LTE) connections. From other posts in this forum it does appear that this model of G3 may be incompatible with T-Mobile US and AT&T network frequencies, and if so that's understandable.
2) It seemed to have a very strong preference to connect to T-MO, but on that network it would frequently lose data connectivity, despite the phone showing a strong signal. My wife's Galaxy S3, also on Three, would stay connected all the time. If I tried manually searching for networks and selecting either T-MO or AT&T, usually that would restore connectivity. However...
3) Entering manual network selection from this state (connected to T-MO but not getting any data), the phone would display a warning along the lines of "Do you want to search for networks while there is an active data connection?" -- yet there was no data connection icon in the status bar, and no throughput. This feels like some sort of bug - the phone thought it had a data connection but really didn't?
3) Even though I would manually select the AT&T network, and get some throughput, the phone would fairly soon spontaneously reconnect to T-MO, and shortly afterwards again lose data connectivity. This became tedious and frustrating. Other phones I've had have always respected a manual network selection and stuck to the selected network, even when if another available network had a stronger signal. Not so this G3. Is this known, normal behaviour?
The only other thing that may be relevant is that for most of the time I had the phone set to connect only to WCDMA networks, because the data capability of GSM is next to useless, and since I'd not seen any LTE, and WCDMA + LTE only is not an option, WCDMA was really all I was interested in.
