The Faster Upgrade is a good one. Not so sure this forum is the place for the Bootloaders. The forum seems to be mainly focused on services offered by AT&T.

How about telling them that their own U-verse app for their Uverse Service will not install or work on their Note 2 phone?
Keyword is this is major customer dissatisfier...

Let us tether without having to buy a separate tethering plan! Especially if we have the grandfathered unlimited data plan :laugh:

I would just like to have Internet all day without turning my phone off 2 to 6 times a day.

This is my biggest issue as well as many others. Why can't we have both. Now don't hate me here... (I hardly ever use more then 2GB a month anyways) but, I think they should let us have free tethering with unlimited data and then they can slow us down after 5 GB. It would be a way so in emergency's it would be available and I wouldn't have to worry about incurring an addition cost.....
As for the we paid for unlimited argument... for me I never really use that much but I see the validity of the argument.
My proposal is simply: sure you can tether, but if you blow though all your data we are going to slow you down..... little steps my friends little steps.

I'd ask about markets with slow HSPA+ speeds. I'd heard that there's a difference between "HSPA+" and "HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul". Are they rolling out this "enhanced backhaul" to more markets, or are they just focusing on their slowly growing LTE?

I agree with you. I have AT&T's grandfathered 'unlimited' plan but I have never gone above 2GB in a month, except two months ago. I was travelling for business and tethered my laptop to my phone to stream some online videos and pushed 3GB while tethering. I got a letter in the mail next week telling me that I couldn't do that again after the 30th of the month or they would convert me to a tethering plan. I'm not asking to let me tether on my unlimited plan to let me push tens of GB's, I simply want to be able to tether my tablet or laptop while traveling for work.
I was going to get the 3g Nexus 7 but settled on the GN2 since I wouldn't have to either a) but a tethering plan for my SGS3 or b) buy a separate data plan for my new tablet. The GN2 solves the tablet issue for me (probably a separate thread altogether).

Tell that to our One X and Atrix compatriots. Carriers dictate locked bootloaders (and the inability to unlock them, like at htcdev.com)

Ditto the need for faster OS upgrades from AT&T. If they want to keep customers, they'll have to learn to be more nimble. (Painful for a huge corporation, but it can be done.)

Tell them to lose Isis. The people want Google wallet, not Isis.

I would like to see the primary line on a family plan get back the 12 month upgrade cycle.
Also, I think phone warranties should last at least until upgrade eligibility. Or, they should let people upgrade early if their phone breaks between warranty end and upgrade eligibility.

Faster firmware updates, better communication about when we are going to get updates (Why do Sprint and Verizon have multiview, for example, but we don't? AT&T isn't saying anything about it), removal of bloatware from the ROMs/stop tinkering with ROMs, and find out why we don't have original packaging (anyone else miss their Samsung Tin or headphones?). You might also suggest unlimited LTE plans with 2-3 Gig plans for fallback 3G.
As an aside, I am happy with AT&T :good: as a carrier, and not only is my whole family with them, but so is my business. I can say (without any other connection to AT&T) that I have received exceptional service when I go to my local AT&T store.
I wanted to make sure and mention the positive because i have found more traction when bringing up some positives in these types of discussions, versus sounding like i am blasting them. I hope this helps you.

I think in the big scheme of things the xda members are a fairly small segnent of the business, but that being said, we're not a bunch of dummies, we're all very up to date on what's available as far as equipment and which carrier has which features. So we're small, but educated, don't assume we're unaware of what other carriers are doing and what our phones are capable of.

1. Support Google Wallet
2. More options for data plans. As previous poster said, Allow unlimited data plans that have LTE for up to X amount of GB, then fall to 3G. Maybe even fall to EDGE after 10 GB.
3. Forget tethering nonsense. Data is data, does it matter whether it through the phone or tethered to a computer?
4. Maybe institute tiered fees to allow earlier upgrades of hardware while under contract. Maybe 100$ fee after 6 months, 50$ after a year, etc
5. Most important - faster OTA updates!!!

Plans to bring back favorite numbers? ie. unlimited calling to numbers saved as favorite numbers...
It's still offered on other providers(verizon) and i dont want to pay $30 for some messaging plan with free any mobile to mobile..

Give us tethering without having to pay extra for it.
Approve Samsungs firmware updates quicker.
Give me my Samsung original packaging, I want my headphones.

Tell then to update their piece of crap micro cell

I have Wireless Tether for Root Users installed but when I try to search it on the Market with mine or anyone elses phone, it's not there.

Actually sprint finally disabled it for us. It was reported on a couple tech blogs. Sorry I don't have link since I'm on my phone to show you.

Just because a bunch of people post about it does not make it so. It is speculation at best. I fail to see how the release of an iPhone would make Sprint block tethering apps on Android. Correlation != causation. Pretty sure it is because Sprint is trying to crack down on excess data usage in general and that was one of the easiest ways to do it. Sprint has made a ton of changes to their policies lately and everyone is blaming the iPhone for it. Nobody ever stops to think that maybe they have a plan and that the iPhone is simply PART of that plan.
The plan is to save a lot of money bc they have to pay $30+ million to apple for the iphone so this way they get more new contracts! This is why they raised the returning fee to $350 and 14 days bc they know that a lot of the new iphone users are going to leave bc the bad data service. They need the iphone to raise the share price so they can pay for the LTE.

Sure, that is true. But the two concepts are similar.
In science, sometimes you cannot get an unequivocal proof of something, but you may have good correlations between two phenomena.
A scientist may then use the following approach to prove that the two phenomena are directly related: review and disprove all other possible scenarios which may give the same experimental result. Technically it's not a proof, as it is essentially an argument from ignorance. But it's a very useful tool nevertheless.
I cannot see any other good reason why Sprint would disable wireless tether app in the market so close to iphone4s release date.

The key phrase here is "so they can pay for LTE". They are in the midst of expanding and strengthening their network and adding LTE coverage, this is why they need the money, not to pay for the iPhone. The iPhone is only a piece of their greater plan and all the cuts and changes they are making is to help see that plan to fruition.

While Sprint certainly needs money for infrastructure upgrades given the short-term-profit outlook that has ruined the economy in the past 20 years I'm willing to bet that Sprint cares more about getting more customers (with the iPhone) than they do about upgrading infrastructure for customers they already have.
How far apart are those priorities? Perhaps not very far, but, I think it's almost obvious that Sprint would care more about new contract customers. Though managing churn certainly comes into play here, that's straddling the line though. Some of that churn will be for Sprint's (previous) lack of the iPhone and some will be for horrid coverage and performance.
But what is going to cost Sprint more? LTE rollout and the rest of the new Network Vision or paying Apple for all of the (estimated) 20 MILLION iPhones they promised to buy at $30 *BILLION*....
...either way you slice it Sprint needs to cut it's costs in any way possible. I would imagine a $30 *BILLION* contract with Apple is certainly likely to accelerate their desire to cut some corners here and there.
But for all of the 'the sky is falling' types out there I wouldn't worry about smart-phone unlimited data any time soon. Now that Sprint has the iPhone as well it is an even playing field...now they just have to catch up with infrastructure and customers...and until they become at least #2 of the big 3 I wouldn't worry about "Unlimited Data" going anywhere. It's all they have to differentiate themselves...the iPhone only upgrades them to 'also ran' status.
...though, I don't say unlimited data I say "Unlimited Data"....you can replace the implied air-quotes with an asterisk if you wish. What "Unlimited Data" will mean in the future may change....but it will still likely be what we have now.
But, if Sprint were to happen ditch the "Unlimited Data" I'd bail to Verizon so fast it'd make a couple heads spin...I'm sticking with Sprint for what, the paltry $10-$15 in savings over Verizon???? Pfffft....It's the "Unlimited Data"...you take that away and I (and many many others I'd wager) wouldn't be willing to put up with their crap.

Let me help you since you seem to need the obvious stated.
Sprint clearly believes that the iPhone will lead to a significant increase in customers and thus bandwidth requirements. They are taking actions to prepare for these changes. cutting down on high data usage so that the network can handle three new traffic is almost certainly on their minds.

+1... not a conspiracy therapist type of guy but I too believe the introduction of the Iphone will/has change(d) how Sprint handles things.. My data speeds which were terrible to begin with have only gotten worse, which makes my tethering my Sunday ticket when I am out pretty ****ty...lol

It will always be available from GoogleCode...and v3.1 beta 99 works great. YMMV.
Everyone seems to be missing the OBVIOUS reason they would want to block tethering apps on the market that take advantage of rooted phones...
Sprint CHARGES people for the right to tether their phone. If you can root and tether for free, they are losing out on that $30/month tethering charge.
Plain and simple... That costs them a lot of money whether or not the iPhone is in their lineup.
I'm not saying I'm happy that they finally got smart enough to block apps that allow you to do things that violate the TOS, but its a pretty obvious reason.
Verizon and AT&T have been doing it for 6 months already.

6 months? Far longer so far as I know...but I've not had service with either of them for years.
While I know they could stand to lose $30 from each of us rooted tetherers I don't think that's how they would lose the most money. We are so small in number however our data consumption is likely in the top 1-5%. It's not the $30 they miss from us (which I'm sure they'd love) so much as the 15-25gb more a month that we consume over the average data hungry android user.
Sure, it's about money. I'm just not convinced it's the $30 they are missing so much as the terabyte upon terabyte that a tiny tiny tiny fraction of us are surely consuming in aggregate. Their hotspan plans and devices are now bandwidth limited, remember.

[INFO] VZW UNLIMITED Data - Tips from a Throttled Power User

I originally posted information on how VZW actually does throttle 4G data. They claim to only throttle 3G connections but I can see obvious speed adjustments in a specific line that I severely exceed the normal usage on, my connections are slower than a more typically used line.
I am fine with being throttled and was offering my experience in what the thresholds were, I posted because of recent news about AT&T and a lot of misinformation about unlimited data usage and carrier's throttling. I was trying to quell the fears from experience because I highly doubt a single one of you is throttled or ever will be whereas I am in the top 5%... probably the top 1%. – Essentially that I am on the carrier’s side in their right to do so and that it’s not so bad when it happens.
What I got was a lynch mob over my very atypical data usage. My data needs are far greater than any plan currently offered so instead of paying $500+ a month in overages I admitted in my post to using Wireless Tether. - This is where the pitchforks and torches came in. If you don't use this app then so be it, I am Frankenstein’s monster and you want to string me up... if you have ever used the app then put down your pitchfork, you belong at my side because there is no difference in using it for 1kb or 1tb.
I read my contract and the terms of my service and do not believe I have violated my specific agreement but if I sign a new contract then the verbiage would change so that I would be in breach.
Know your contract and understand what you are signing, some marriages don’t even last for 2 years… It’s good to understand what you are signing up for especially if you are on here looking for instructions to root your phone or how to install one of the MANY tethering apps for rooted and non-rooted phones.
Someone (mwalt2) mentioned that I could still get the Mobile Hotspot enabled with unlimited data so I called Verizon and talked to a half dozen people, only the online rep would confirm that the specific feature code he gave exists… This is the closest as I have come in a year to getting Unlimited Mobile Hotspot data.
My final conversation with VZW today, I talked to a really awesome rep who agreed that my data usage was high but never questioned why. Actually, he avoided mentioning or asking me any questions about my usage other than the initial “Wow, you use a lot of data”. He told me the feature code I mentioned isn’t available anymore and he couldn’t add it to my plan; feature codes don’t ‘expire’ because people who had it added while it still existed need it for their plan to bill properly. So he could see it but he wasn’t able to add it.
My attempt was to add the feature for Unlimited Mobile Hotspot data; he could only offer me a 2GB plan for $20 or sign me up for a MiFi for an additional $10 for the line and then $80 for 10GB (They only double the data on phone plans).
His final words were, “Just keep doing what you are doing. There are no plans to get rid of people with unlimited data and at very least, if they do eventually, you have until the end of your contract to use it.”
This isn't my free ticket nor should it be yours, I will take it for what it's worth.
MY FINAL COMMENT:
I was trying to help the community with a contribution few of you will ever experience but ended up just getting chastised, threatened and called names. I will close this thread by saying: The VZW reps did not have any bad comments, no names, nor did they threaten to kick my arse. They have a better picture than any of you of my usage as well as a clear understanding of what the policies and terms of my agreement are. Every single Verizon rep I talked to today was nice, didn’t threaten to terminate my contract or tell me that I don’t “Need to use…” whatever feature/app was causing me to use so much data. - This is why I am with Verizon; I was a human talking to humans. I did not, nor should I ever, have to justify what I use my internet for. – I am sorry I even posted this but I did learn a lot so it wasn’t a complete waste.

Don't be. Tiered plans have nothing to do with capacity and everything to do with keeping revenue per user up despite declining voice usage. It has everything to do with paying a $400+ commission to Apple for every iPhone sold. As you know first hand, traffic shaping can be handled without across the board cutoffs.
You keep fighting the good fight. Strangle their network til they take it away from you. Fight the man, because he's been fighting all of us for years. He will lose, first by giving us unlimited off-peak data back. Then, he'll give us unlimited 24/7 access back too. We've seen this all before with voice.

There was alot of speculation whether Verizon's unlimited data plan was truly unlimited back in the d1 days. Judging from the amount of data you have used I guess it is really unlimited I've always been tempted to tether to my Xbox when I'm away from a connection but thought it would lag to much.

In all honesty I don't think of myself as "fighting the man". I just believe that we should ALL have a plan that fits our specific needs. They simply don't offer one for me any longer so I am forced to do something they frown upon.
I agree though, they screwed with the voice plans back in the early 00's and lost enough people, I almost jumped ship in 2001, they eventually brought back the unlimited talk and gave us more options like family share and others... SMS and MMS are the same way, they finally give me enough text allowance that I don't go over anymore but before it was either pay per text, 100 or 500... now I can pay for unlimited.
Someday they will bring back unlimited data or offer it at a considerable markup. Until then, I will continue using my data as I need it and will bail and go elsewhere if they ever cancelled it.

I play online all the time with friends... I actually have had my daughter watching Netflix or Amazon videos on the tablet while I play Halo online.
I only had and issue once when my phone decided to reboot mid-game.
I literally had more issues and lag when I had Comcast Cable.
Give it a try sometime... Keep in mind that at home I have full signal 4G LTE so you may not have the same full signal I do. My Ping times to the Live servers are around 60ms.

I tether on sprint and hit like 30gb but don't do it officially because they cap it. I wouldn't do it if there was an affordable decent service where I live there is only one ISP which is over prized. So sometimes its necessary to do things that are frowned upon when what you need isn't offered.

I play Xbox live off a terrible 3g connection just fine. I use at most 10 gigs a month if I play ALOT. I pay for an unlimited plan. Suck it if your upset because you came to Verizon late.
Edit: Verizon is capping the data because they can. Not because we use a lot of data because they can get away with it. They cap it and make you pay when you go over. They aren't doing it to be fair to the people who don't use as much they do it to make money.

Well I guess we need to wait for the exact info but there is some speculation that even someone on your family account changing phones could cause anyone on the same account to lose unlimited. My wife just recently downgraded from Android to iPhone (has had 2 HTC phones which both would not shut off the screen when she had it next to her face and she doesn't like the screen size of the LTE phones) who I guess now has a 3G unlimited plan down from a 4G plan she had when she was using my old Thunderbolt. While she doesn't use that much data and being forced into a tiered plan when she upgrades in 2 years won't be a big deal but I want to keep my unlimited even if it means buying phones off contract. The only thing that might make it ok is the $60 I pay now between both phones for data can be used for like a 10 or 20 gig bucket.
I will be pissed if they don't offer us AT LEAST the double data promo.

I think thats exactly the opposite of how its going to work, if you have a contract with them, you can make them honor it. If you do not have a contract with them, your screwed. Right now I am paying $50 for 10GB, if the "data share" thing comes through, I imagine they would charge you $10/each additional phone on your plan, you would be looking at around $60/10GB IF they are still offering the double data! That's a BIG if, you better call them right now. Normally $50 gets you 5GB.
It is what it is, these wireless companies are all the same. Personally I'm tired of the misinformation, online petitions and broken promises. When my contract is up and they try to move me or my 3G wife to another plan I'll let my wallet do the talking and go to the company that offers the best overall value.

The problem for me is VZW is the only carrier to actually have reception in my area, and everybody knows it, so they can charge whatever they want. I have a choice of paying VZW a super premium and always being able to use the device I am paying for, or paying a competitor and not having service.

I'm just shocked they won't let us use it through the rest of our contract. Giving people only a few months using it and making them switch mid contract is beyond awful.

I bought a Gnex on verizon a few weeks after it came out. I'm currently on a family plan and I'm the only one who has a smartphone on the plan (3 total phones, mine's one of the "added" lines). Currently I'm on a "month to month" I guess is what it's called. My particular line's contract expired at the beginning of this month and I am currently just paying my same charges with unlimited data, but not bound into the 2 year agreement as far as I'm aware.
What I want to know is how to handle it from here on out, if there's a way to even handle it well. I would like to renew my contract and be able to keep my grandfathered unlimited data through this garbage, which means I need to act immediately before they put this crap into effect, assuming it won't go retro active. So with that being said, can I just simply call and get my contract renewed for 2 years and that be that? Is there even a way to do that? I just don't want to blow whatever extra time I have on my grandfathered unlimited data.
I realize that all the information isn't there, but how would you guys handle this if you were in my position? I don't want to screw myself, I use 8-12 gb of data a month so this is sort of important.

Reading through all these sites and Shamu or shammon quotes sounds like people with 3g upgrading to 4g phones will be forced into the shared data plans. But hell either way were all screwed.

[Q] Possible "Unlimited" Data Coming to Verizon?

Hey guys,
First off I'd like to just recognize the XDA forums and its members for all of your help over the past few years as I've been rooting, unlocking, and troubleshooting my android devices. I started with the T-Mobile Dash (HTC Excalibur), T-Mobile MyTouch 3G, Sprint HTC Hero, Sprint Galaxy Tab (Original 7-inch), and now happily using my unlocked and rooted Verizon Galaxy Nexus running AOKP M5.
Anyway, i recently was on the phone with Verizon to bump up my data plan to the 10GB / month deal for $50. We ended up bullshitting a bit about how old unlimited plans are going away with upgrades, and how people want true, unthrottled, unlimited data. Now I don't know how much truth there is in this, or if she was maybe just trying to get my hopes up, but she mentioned that in the near future verizon is going to launch a truly unlimited family data plan.
Has anyone else heard of this? Now this was only a tier 1 customer service representative, and I know I've heard a lot of people mention how the tier one people are not given any information about upcoming promotions like this. But it makes me think that maybe if there is any truth to this, other customer service members must know of it too, and possibly have told other curstomers.
So i was wondering if anyone other than me has heard anything? And if Verizon was to release an "Unlimited" data plan (family or per device), do you think it would end up being throttled?
If they were going to release an unlimited plan why would they bother removing the current ones?
I think its full of crap... Verizon is trying to get ppl to leave the Unlimited plans just like AT&T... recently Verizon said announced that ppl on unlimited were going to be forced out of it. But with so many petitions going around Verizon decided "fine u can keep your unlimited data plans but when it comes to upgrades, you'd be forced to pay the phone at retail price" ..... I personally never get upgrades from carriers... I'm on AT&T and I haven't upgraded my line in about 4 years. Bought the Nexus One .. went for the Nexus S ... and Now The Galaxy Nexus... but if what the lady says is true then my guess is that Verizon doesn't have enough ppl on the 4G network soooo perhaps this Works to there advantage. And of course there will always be a Throttle. =P

Because it's a grandfathered plan that CDMA customers got for a relatively inexpensive monthly fee. And I don't believe they are doing away with the plan for CDMA-only customers, as that "problem" should automaticaly take care of itself in just a few generations of phones. I've always thought that it was just a matter of time before they stoped offering their loyal long-time customers unlimited LTE service for the same low monthly rate they've always paid. Othewise tens of thousands of people would be using it for their home internet service as the LTE network grows. I'm sure many folks already are.
I'm only speculating, but the "Unlimitied Family Data" concept does sound feasible. But I'll bet it will cost more than twice what the grandfathered customers are now paying for it. Perhaps significantly more.

Well, i know that currently i believe there are only per device unlimited plans. What I've heard is that those plans will be switched to a tiered data plan if you are still on 3G and upgrade to a 4G LTE device.
What the Verizon lady was saying is that they will bring back unlimited as a Family Plan add-on, so that you can pay, say $100 (total guess), and get truely unlimited data on every device on your plan.
For me, this would be great, because everyone on my plan uses at the very least 4GB of data a month. This adds up to be about $150 in data plans across all the devices. If we could consolidate our data plans to one family plan wide "plan" then we could save alot of money, and use as much data!

I know it probably wont happen due to the proprietary 4G LTE technology, but it would be great to see Google offer unlocked 4G LTE nexus devices directly (on the play market). I would LOVE to pay google directly for their device at a slightly higher price, and not have to worry about voiding warranty or contract by modding my phone. Plus id love to get the actual google back cover for my GNEX, instead of that ugly Verizon stamped one...
How many years must i wait for truely unlimited data so i can use my device and the internet the way it was meant to be used!?!?

That is what i currently do, I use my GNEX as a Wifi access point to get my laptop online. I ditched comcast when i switched to verizon and got 4G LTE a month ago. I am no longer attached to my wall
The current unlimited 3g customers only pay like $15, correct??

I don't see why they'd be bringing back unlimited data when they haven't offered it to new subscribers for quite a long time now. They've clearly expressed that they want to launch family data plans, but I doubt they'd be unlimited. It goes against the direction they've (and other carriers) been pushing.

Your phone isn't a replacement for a home internet connection. Quit being a cheap asshole and get an actual home connection. You're the reason why data plans are trending the way they are.

You must have not read your contract, which clearly states unlimited data on your phone, not unlimited data on every device you choose to connect to your phone.
I suggest taking the time to read your entire contract so you can find out everything you are doing that is clearly not covered by the agreement you signed with Verizon.

You have to remember that even thought you have "unlimited data", you're still sharing the same network tower as others and hogging up all the bandwidth isn't right.

Funny, I don't recall anyone asking for your opinion on this... i thought this thread was on the possibility of unlimited data coming our way.
OMG the world will end because people like me share internet to their computer! Do you guys realize that your on a website that specializes in stuff like, hmmmmm, wifi tethers? I understand their is a whole mess of more complicated things here, but honestly.... quit being so old fashioned. times are changing more and more each day. soon only big businesses will have data from the wall and everything will be wireless.
Also, why would they give us the ability to wifi tether if they didn't want us to use our data for it?

I'm an unlimited 3g user. I use wifi and Bluetooth tether, but only when I am in a place that doesn't have its own wifi or if my home wifi is acting up. Not all unlimited tetherers are bad. Besides, I pull in FAR more data streaming my music with Google Play Music.

The extra charge just for the ability to tether is BS! Just because i dont throw $40 a month to verizon to pay for a tether, doesnt mean im stealing data. I pay for the data no matter what. So what i use that data for and what device i use that data on should be totally up to me.

[Q] AT&T switched my data plan right away

After using my Note 2 for about an hour I got a text from AT&T saying they were switching my data plan because a LTE data plan was required. Previously I had an unlimited data plan. Sure enough, I checked my account online and now I have the 3 gb plan with $10 per 1gb over the limit. How can they do this? I don't want this? What are my options? I specifically bought the Note 2 paying full retail because I didn't want AT&T to know I switched phones. This sucks!!
I am pretty sure the recent fcc agreement with related fines for switching customers or forcing customers from their unlimited plans to limited plans was considered illegal. I would be *****ing up a storm and filing a complaint with the FCC, online. Wouldn't hurt to file an online complaint with the attorney general from your state either.
I had unlimited plan (non lte) which was grandfathered. After purchase of Note 2, noticed that I was put on a 3gb plan. I called AT&T and within 24 hours my unlimited plan was restored.
They switched me to the unlimited lte plan when I switched, att customer service was super helpful, almost too helpful. You might call them and see what they say.

Just spent an hour on the phone with two dumb twits (in India from their accent) of AT&T's customer service department. They said I had an unlimited non-smartphone plan and that they could not upgrade me to an unlimited LTE plan. I mentioned the FCC ruling ( http://bgr.com/2012/11/07/att-fcc-fine-data-plans/ ) but I don't know if people in India even know what the FCC is. Those people on the phone don't give last names or employee numbers so they feel they are unacountable.
I've been using a smart phone for the past 4 years but apparently I was still on the non-smart phone plan. They said because of that they can not switch me over to the unlimited LTE plan. So, what should I do now? I will not stay wit ha limited plan. I'll switch to T-Mobile first. However my AT&T Note 2 will not work with T-Mobile's system I think. Also, I'd rather not switch as its a pain in the ass. I really hope I can get this resolved. Do you think I'd have beeter luck in person at a store?

When I switched from my dumb phone to my smart phone 4 years ago I didn't tell them about it so I guess I was still on the unlimited data for no-smart phones. Well, how stupid they are to think I go through 20-30 GB of data a month without it being a smart phone (I did a lot of tethering during those years).
I bought my Note 2 online. I assumed they wouldn't know about the phone switch since they didn't know about my phone switch 4 years ago. I guess because the Note 2 uses a different frequency they became aware of it that way. Anyway, it shouldn't matter. I was on an unlimited plan before and I think it is not unreasnable to be on an unlimited plan after switching. God how I hate AT&T. I was playing cards with some friends earlier tonight and an AT&T ad came on the TV. I wanted to throw something at the TV so badly!

Never evereverever..never! call after normal business hours and or the weekend, you will get outsourced!...everever..never!!! My granddaughters Kindle Plus (1st Gen) fell victim to the known USB mini port failure,1 month out of warranty. My daughter called after normal business hours Monday..OUTSOURCED!!...ever.never. They told her it would cost her $150 to get it replaced , after a 1/2hr she gave up. She told me what happened, and I told here to call regular business hours. So she did the next day on Tuesday, not outsources, new Kindle Plus arrived this Friday no charge at all. They sent a return label to send the bad unit back within 30 day's. Go into an Att store. I have been in several where the people are really nice and will help you work through this. If you don't find this to be true, go to a different store and try again. Unfortunately, you might have wasted your money getting the full retail version of the phone. Why not just return it and get one through Att or Best Buy? Mine cost me $175 with the contract extension and I'm happy as can be. As for your true unlimited data, this might be the end of that! Welcome to throttling (but check out the thread on how to bypass the data limit). Whatever you do, don't stop until you've found someone who helps you convert your plan to a grandfathered unlimited one.

So you never had unlimited data for smart phones and your mad at att?! You been cheating the system for 4 years and your upset at att?! You have to have smartphone unlimited data to be grandfathered into smartphone unlimited data, it doesn't take rocket science.

After your explanation, I see now why you were switched. Here's what's apparently happening. Your smartphone before the Note II apparently didn't require LTE or report that it needed it, hence why AT&T gullible-y never realized you were using a smartphone. It's also possible that your smartphone was also on the 3G network only, which is what most non-smartphones use. Although the Note II can run on 3G networks, it would still report to the carrier that it needs access to 4G to 4G LTE networks unless you had told it not to, which seems you didn't within the hour of using it. Of course, you wouldn't have known this since you just got the phone. It also would have told AT&T that your IMEI had changed the moment you put the sim card in, which would have revealed to AT&T that you did indeed have a Note II, hence this situation.
Either way, there's no way around this situation as far as I can see unless you ask them if there's a way you can be considered as grandfathered into regular unlimited data. If you're a long time AT&T user, cite that you've been a loyal customer, but tell them you'd hate to have to go to another carrier over this. You would also need to be under contract.
No offense, and I'm guilty in another form of this in a way, but due to your circumstances, it can be perceived that you tried to cheat the system, which is in no way AT&T's fault, but yours, and you're just upset that you got caught.

If its unlim smartphone data it will be grandfathered if u bought the phone and it was manually swapped. If u have unlim smartphone data and put your sim in an lte device without telling att, the system will automatically add the 3gb plan. Its not made to add unlim even if you have it. If you upgrade at a store online or over the phone with unlim data you will keep it.

Until two days ago I didn't know there were two seperate unlimited plans (one for smart phone and one for non-smart phones). The reason I didn't tell AT&T I switched to a smartphone 4 years ago is because I thought I would lose my unlimited data plan. It was not to save $15 a month. I could care less about that. It hindsight I should have told them and been on the unlimited smartphone plan but I was so concerned that they would cancel my unlimited data plan I din't do that.

Well, I may have cheated the system for $15 a month it turns out but that was not my intention. My intention was only to keep unlimited data. Don't we all "cheat the system" here everytime we do something that the networks don't want us doing with our phones? Tethering, trying to get around throttling, even rooting can be considered cheating the system. I always thought that was part of the spirit of modding and customizing.

I like 'circumvented' better than cheated; it sounds less judgemental. Yeah, those may be my two options. If they are, I will choose option 2-- go to a different carrier. In that case, I'll be putting my 3-day old Note 2 up for sale I guess and buying one from T-Mobile.

I was using a HTC Touch HD. It was a great phone for the time and I installed Dutty's custom rom found on these forums. However a lot has changed in 4 years. I don't like the progress (or lack of it) with Windows and all of my 'must have' programs are now available on Android so making the switch was an each choice (and long overdue).

I'm sorry to anyone who misconstrued my remarks. I was upset with the customer service reprezsentative and her thick accent was not making matters any easier. Perhaps that is why I mentioned that she was probably in India. I certainly didn't mean to disparage all Indians and if anyone took it that way I am sorry.
A followup session with a rep today resulted in pretty much the same thing, except they're giving me $50 off my next bill. Really though, by that point I didn't even try that hard. I've decided I'll switch to T-Mobile because, even if I got to keep unlimited data with AT&T there would still be the throtttling issues to deal with each month. T-Mobile may not have the breakneck speed of AT&T (right now) but I don't need 50+ Mb/s.

I don't know.. AT&T didn't discontinue unlimited or throttled data back then.. You shouldn't have had any issues keeping unlimited data when switching phones unless you wanted to save $15/month.
