LG Optimus G Wireless charging? - Sprint LG Optimus G

I decided to get this phone over the S3 for a multitude of reasons, but one thing that has bummed me out is that I can't do the mod to use inductive charging. Is there a chance a case could be made to plug into the bottom of the phone to do this? Or any other way to crack the phone open and mod for wireless charging?
I didn't put this in the accessories section since modding might be an option.

the case option is possible using an induction coil but care would have to be taken to make sure the proper voltage and amps are flowing through the coil before plugging it into the bottom of the phone. If you can solder it should be possible to mod it directly into the phone. I put up a quick design for a case using my autocad but I haven't had time to do much of anything besides xda read/reply...

I'm curious about this too. I looked in the service manual and found a similar power point used in other mods for the touchstone. Has anyone tried to mod in this way yet?

what is the reality of this for our phones?

From the pictures posted in this forum for the disassembly to get to the battery, our phone does not even have the same contacts as our sister phone (Nexus 4) to accept a wireless charging coil. Wireless charging would have to be added to this phone by tapping into the USB port either internally via a hardware mod, or externally with a low profile USB port and a charging coil integrated into a case.

hmm.... well, I guess that makes sense since pretty much nothing else on this phone is the same as the nexus 4, except of course that LG makes them and they both have a glass back.
I could swear that somewhere in XDA I had seen someone do a mod like this to the AT&T version and now I can't find it. I need to cut the lucid dreaming apparently.

I was able to put the coild and little magnets in the back of my phone case... so now it sticks to my touch stone... I have not soldered any wires to 5v or grnd on on the phone at all.. That is beyond by ability currently i will look into it. Looks like the nexus 4 has simple prongs already there (for the orb) but they did not include those prongs in the optimus g sprint or att. so either me or someone that is far more skilled will need to figure out where those points should connect to before doing so.
Sorry guys didnt take picture i was a little early to work this morning and did it at my desk before work started. took about 30min. (remember no wiring just simply put coild and magnets in my phone so it at least sticks to the touch stone in my car)

Thanks for putting that together!

Take no offense to this, because I'm really not trying to be rude, but that looks terrible. But if it works for you, that's all that matters.
Anyways, I'm trying to get the palm inductive charging coil working internally on a bad esn LGOG that I have. I haven't had time to take it apart, but it is on my to-do list in the near future. I still have my old pre, a spare back cover, and a touchstone.

Sure! As soon as i get a chance ill record it, most likely this morning, thanks

I think that if we follow the same fitment guidelines as in that N4 tutorial, we should be okay. The internals look very similar. We'd probably have to tap into the USB port's power for it to work, as we don't have the Qi charging coil.

okay i saw the webpage and it is doable, i just bought a micro soldering iron tip and a kit to open the phone (again) carefully... now if you could somehow tell me on the micro usb which two are the power pins so i can solder the two wires there and then to the coil, with that ill make it in a day... i made my little prototype in half an hour or less. Thanks!!!

That I don't know, but that's something that I'm guessing that is standard throughout the micro usb standard. They all should be the same across the board.

Alright, I think I have it figured out. You'll notice that the dude from the Nexus 4 tutorial soldered his red wire onto the side of a black diode labeled "A/W". After taking apart my spare LGOG, we have that same A/W diode (it's microscopic), but it's angled a different way. I think if you solder the positive wire on the the pin that's on the side of the A/W diode facing the battery, and then ground the negative wire onto the exposed copper plate that's next to the screw hole (and right next to the A/W diode), this *may* (no guarantees) work.

I Guess i did it!!!! i soldered the two wires to the tiny diode and then to the palm coil that i just got today in the mail. everything works but there's something hard to do and that is fitting everything in there, i already tried and had no luck the thing has a little back belly lol.

Awesome news. Pretty cool. I wonder if the same thing would work with a Qi coil. Qi is probably the way to go because it definitely has a thinner profile, and plenty of OEM's are coming out with charging bases for it. You also don't have to align any magnets for it to work.

Powermat Mod for MyTouch 4g

Can someone give me a hand here.
i have a powermat received which has 2 wires on it a red and a black, and i am trying to find a way to connect theses wires to the 3 side pin connectors on my MyTouch 4G.
anyone have any ideas on how to do this,
Please all help is greatly appreciated
Lol that looks like my pic lol.. I wanted to do a powermate for my phone to, but jus a fyi, you wont get a AC quick charge from the pins, it will be a usb charge..
But all you gotta do is what you see in the pic, red pos on the left pin next to volume rocker and neg on the pin next to the usb port.. If you want you can put the neg on the middle pin also, that will activate desk mode when you charge ur phone..
Good luck, and show the final product when done..

yeah i got that i idea, but how would i be able to keep it hidden?
I just went and purchased the PowerMat Door for the Droid X and as you can see in the pics below it has a Micro usb connector on the battery door it self.
Maybe cuttign a custom sized door to fit the MT4G, what do you think?
you see what i amtalking about?

Sorry for the late reply havent been on here for awhile!!! Ummm the hardest thing would be to find away to hook it up to the pins.. I know there is already a power extender thing for the mytouch but looks ugly lol.. I would say try to get another batt cover for cheap and see if you can mod that with the power mate..

I prefer to use touchstone kits for modding from the palm pre, I find it charges my device the same speed as the A/C charger when I hook it up by soldering from its leads to the usb port on the device. It may require a nearly complete tear down of the device, but that gives you all the protection of the charging circuits and the fully charged message on android etc so your device will stop charging, if you hook it up using the 3pins on the battery connector then you are bypassing the charging circuits, possibly with disasterous effect, but certainly with no way to stop charging other than removing it from the charging mat.
Hope that makes sense...

I have many touchstones from the palm pre (my old phone). This is a great way to do the mod, wondering if you have any pics of internals after a mod (any phone)

Wireless charging mod.

I cannot wait for the official galaxy S3 wireless charging kit to come out.
I got inspired by the Galaxy mod that was done by using parts from a Palm Touchstone cover.
ww.qianqin.de/2011/09/28/high-waf-inductive-charging-mod/
I am pretty sure, that I don't need to do an intrusive operation as the one in the link - I believe that Samsung made pins ready for it under the cover.
Does anyone know what the two 'pins' that are exposed to the left of the battery are for?
Thanks!
There are countless threads regarding the "pins", wireless charging kits, and that mod.
I have a touchstone. And a back, and would like to see if anyone has applied this to the S3 and made it work

I have a feeling the wireless charging module will interact somehow with the two pins next to the battery. I was planning on attempting this mod using these pins but without a multimeter i am unable to tell whether these pins can be used and which way round to wire them up. If anyone can assist i would be grateful.

Yes. Countless threads about the mod for the Galaxy S, but I haven't been able to find anything about pins on the Galaxy SIII.

I have finally managed to find a page that claimt that the two pins next to the battery indeed are for wireless charging.

Only problem is, I don't know Trusted Reviews - so I don't know how 'Trusted' they are?
All I need now is to find out which pin is 0V and which is +5V. (I'm pretty sure that the current is the same as the Palm cover provides.
Every accessories are always made for on pin, hdmi, wireless kit etc. Always Samsung market tactics.
I wish you'll do it.

Yes it works, it will be a little slower, im only seeing 450mah going in as opposed to about 1000mah
But that doesnt matter in the slightest as i mostly charge overnight
that is great news! That does not look too difficult and it looks as NFC is not touched. Just the translation is difficult and not knowing what samsung wireless charging is about.
I also wonder how snug the fit is after adding the magnets from the touchstone back cover?
I will post details soon when i am back home

yes he did, i'm gonna try it with just tape - his solder blobs seems to be huge and because of the the cover makes this bulge... maybe then it will fit perfectly
the samsung wireless charger looks nice but i like the idea with the magnets of the touchstone!
please post pictures and a possible video. This is so interesting!
i'll do as soon i get the touchstone kit and have some spare time to do this (hopefully on sunday...)
what happens when you place an induction charging compatible device on an induction cooking range? Will it charge the battery, or will it overload the circuitry and destroy the phone\battery?
I wonder what happens when you plug in the phone with usb while it's inductively charging.

Sprint's backplate covers the inductive charging leads - Successful Mod!

Which is one feature i really would have liked.. but popping the back open, I see the two leads for NFC, but the two leads near the right side of the battery for inductive charging on the international version is not on the Sprint version.. sad panda face
-- UPDATE -- Successful mod
I had to order a Sprint specific backplate from ebay
So I got the Nexus Wireless Qi Charging Orb.. and I drilled two small holes in the spare Sprint backplate I had.. I then proceeded to use some copper foil, folded it up a few times, and placed them in the hole with the sticky part on the housing. I then made sure the bottom of the folded copper was down enough to make contact with the contacts on the motherboard. Closed it up and then placed the receiver in the holes with the copper foil. Placed on the Qi charger and boom.. Wireless charging..
I did it this way so I can replace the middle housing and it won't look like I modded the phone if I need to take it in for repair.. Also, I can charge it with the Seidio Surface case on.

I dont know but sprint really *ucked this model up if they would have left it alone like tmobile we would have been fine Im looking for a solution to the wireless charging but i dont know if its going to be possible all because sprint wants to be different and difficult. Ive been with sprint for 15 years but my patience is wearing thin.
Im still going to attempt a wireless fix though
whats this need yall help
Can someone help me, I dont have the phone yet so im trying everything in theory, to get wireless charging going. so I have questions!
What is this box
Whats the box for it doesnt look like nfc or a speaker or a microphone so Im hoping its tied to some sort of wireless charging, maybe a cover with the charging pins underneath (wishful thinking)
Personally I think wireless charging is overrated. There's a cable plugged in somewhere to get the pad going. And you can't use the phone while it's charging. Well, inconveniently you can. And it charges quicker via a cable.

[Q] Adding Inductive Charging?

In your opinion, how hard would it be to modify a case/back panel for the Glide, so that it has inductive charging support? I just saw a video online of someone internalizing an iPhone 4/4S charger, with only slight structural modifications (it had the appearance of no case on the outside), and was thinking that I might be able to do it to my Glide. At the moment, I am using a Body Glove case, made of rubber-coated plastic (the only one AT&T sells/sold for the Glide), and my best guess is that the case is about 3mm in thickness. I am looking for no actual phone modifications here (except for wiring the case to the battery, and maybe a modified back cover), so does anyone have any thoughts/ideas/suggestions?
Interesting. There is a company selling those inductive charging mats. I believe there is a connector that plugs to our phone (micro USB) to work with it. You could buy that and try to modify the phone back panel and a case to add the necessary hardware.

I saw this, and figured that's what I was going to use. However, It looks as if the case for most phones adds quite a bit of thickness. I looked at another guide, which involved ripping up a Palm Pre back, soldering some things together, and using the Touchstone mat. As for whether or not that would work with a Powermat, I am not sure.

I've seen that guide, it was for the galaxy s3.
It looks like that phone has the two charging pins below the back cover; looking at the glide, I can't see them.
I fear we would need circuitry or at least more complicated wiring to make it work.
The one I saw was for the original Galaxy S. You may have seen a different one. The video I saw showed him wiring some things directly to the battery, if I remember correctly.
any progress
Hey there!
I found this thread as THE only one where someone imagining about the glide having the possibility to charge inductively.
any new info about it?
@a_p3rson: did you find a way to do it?
I would love to see it becoming true..

So far, the best chance I've seen was using the induction sticker on the back for the Palm (pre I believe), and wiring it to the USB port. I think that would work pretty well, though I am worried with how it would affect the normal function of the USB port. If anyone wants to try it (and share the results), by all means, please do so!
EDIT: It wouldn't be possible to wire the sticker directly to the battery, right? Of course, without causing overcharging/overheating/general harm/etc. to the battery or any part of it?
just throw it out there i have a extended battery from amazon it is about twice as thick as stock batter new back cover has large empty space between camera and batter pack i mean could put flash drive with room to spare in there would be easy to add some new hardware in there if need be for you power matt bought mine of amaxon for 11.00

I seem to remember the sticker on the Pre being really thin - like paper thin. Plus, I really am against cosmetic things like that (e.g. large back, extended battery), so an extended back shouldn't be needed.
However, I do know that the guide that I found (for the Galaxy S) said that it was possible by just wiring the sticker to the charging ports in the USB connector. The only worry I have is if the phone's USB communication would be affected at all.
If it is possible to just directly wire into the charging ports, there appears to be an easily removable panel directly above the microusb port that would presumably give access to it. I'm at work right now, so I can't exactly check, just puttin it out there.

Did you ever see if it was possible to hook the induction sticker to the USB port from here? I just looked at the panel, and it actually looks like there is a sticker that contains some wires going to the main board on that plate, makes me think that it could be an antenna of some sort, and that it might be kind of hard to deal with.

[Q] Wireless Charging Mod Question

I have been reading some very interesting posts about adding wireless charging capabilities to a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Although it seems like every mod requires a touchstone coil, which also requires a larger back cover. Browsing ebay I ran across a "patch" of sorts that goes between the case and the battery to add the inductive charging. I was wondering before I buy it and rip apart my beloved phone. Could I just solder the "patch" to the pogo pins on the side of the phone and would it charge? Or am I missing a component? Thanks in advance for any help!
On Ebay it is called "Qi Wireless Charger Charging Pad + Receiver Kit for Samsung Galaxy S4 S IV i9500"
Also this is my first post, so any comments would be helpful too!
Isn't it for the s4? So I assume it doesn't work on the Galaxy Nexus..

That's what mods are all about, people have successfully mod the palm touchstone coil into their phone and it works flawlessly.
In theory this would work, but how OP are going to connect it to the pogo pins, that's another problem.

Oho Thank you. it very good
Well I was thinking that if you take the phone apart there is a spot where the pogo plugs connect to the circuit board. I thought I could just solder a thin gage wire to the leads, but does that patch have the correct circuits to supply 5v with the right amount of amps?

Check the specs of the induction charger.
Anyway for the touchstone mod, others used a copper tape instead of a wire.

I have a s3 a couple of the s3 qi cards. I have my gnex as a backup and did the mod myself. If you peal the top label off the card around the pins you'll be able to desolder the s3 connector and solder a couple wires. I used a couple fine wires I removed from a old ide cable. I then used a dremel tool to cut a small rectangle under the battery door and behind the pogo pins to connect the wires. I used a very small cut off wheel, took my time, and cut shallow and never took the phone apart. The pins are easy to solder to and much safer. This did disable my pogo pins, but I have no dock so I don't care. I have the Samsung OEM 2000mah extended battery and back cover. This leaves me a small gap to lay my wires without any battery door bulge. My ditztronic case still fits perfect and the wireless charging works great. Its worth noting that the qi pad will provide around 600ma, which is fine since the dock pins charge in USB mode anyway.
BTW, while I think the safest and easiest way to get to the phone's circuitry is to cut that small hole, you are putting a dremel to your phone so I am in no way responsible if you somehow kill your phone.

I got wireless charging on my gnexus
I struggled with this issue for a VERY LONG TIME and I got it down now. I made a video on how I get wireless charging on my G.Nexus easily. I even posted the links to the stuff in the description. The method is universal. I can't post links to outside sources so heres how you get to my video.
