100% Stock, Stuck at "X" Logo on boot. "Dead Android" w/ Exclamation (!) in Recovery - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

100% Stock, Stuck at "X" Logo on boot. "Dead Android" w/ Exclamation (!) in Recovery
Can someone please help me, PLEASE!!
I just want to be able to download the data from my phone, I don't care about getting android working again right now, I just want to download my photos and videos from the phone. I have a Verizon Galaxy Nexus that's completely stock, including locked bootloader. I tried using the toolkit and I am able to have it see the device while it's in fastboot but I can't do any of the functions because it wants to unlock my bootloader which will erase all my data! I was just swapping the battery on my phone when this happened. I wasn't trying to do anything special, it was just supposed to be a normal boot up but it just got stuck on the "X". I'm running 4.1.1. My stock recovery shows a photo of a dead android and an exclamation point. It looks like this: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jF4CgOU8c...ASKg/m6YOuDRcs4g/s1600/AndroidRedTriangle.JPG
Can someone please help me? I will seriously send you a paypal for your time, just please help me the data from my phone. I am somewhat savvy, like I said...I am in fastboot, my drivers are installed, and the toolkit can recognize my phone without any issue.
Thank you soooo sooo much in advance!

Why don't you just boot into stock recovery and just wipe cache. Maybe some rogue app is preventing your boot up.
You will not lose any data by only wiping cache.

My stock recovery shows a big "!" with a dead android. It looks like this.

I think this might be my only option once I get the phone working again.

What steps should I take right now though?
Thank you again so much in advance.

Don't fear....
Even if you unlock your boot loader your data is not actually gone. But let's cross that bridge if we get there.
First things first: take your battery out, take your sim card out, put your sim card in and put your battery in. Boot up the phone.
If that doesn't fix you then the next thing to do is try safe mode. Power off the phone. Then, press the power button and BOTH (yes both) the volume up AND the volume down buttons. Hold them until the phone boots up.
If that doesn't work write back. Don't worry though. Your data is safe.

First, thank you so much for replying.
I should have been more clear in my original message, I took my battery out and sim card in and out over 10 times and I even let the phone sit there for 30 minutes while it was at the X animation to no avail.
I have now also attempted a safe mode boot 4 times with no luck. During my safe mode boot attempts, the phone vibrated a few times but the display just remained at the X animation. It even did it after I let go of the volume key. I'm not sure what to make of this but I attempted it twice with holding both volume keys down as soon as the "google" logo appeared and twice with just the volume down key as soon as the "google" logo appeared. Same thing all 4 times, just sits at the X animation.
What would you recommend as a next step to recover the data? I really only care about the DCIM folder, nothing else matters that much.

When you see this, press power+ vol up to get to the stock recovery menu. There is a wipe cache option there. It may take you a few tries to press both buttons at exactly the same time, but keep trying. No need to reboot in between tries.

Thank you for your reply. I was able to get there and I formatted my cache. After that completed I chose the option to reboot the phone. I didn't do anything special during that reboot like trying to hold the volume down button as well for safe mode, I just let it go. It sat at the "X" animation for about 15 minutes before I gave up and tried it again holding the down volume button, again...no luck. I tried it a third time with holding the down and up volume buttons, no luck.
Any other ideas? Again, I know I've said this a few times but believe me when I say...I really appreciate your guys' help.

I think you need to get into fastboot, unlock the bootloader (if it isn't already) and put a clean factory image on. You'll lose your data when you unlock, but there is a thread in this forum on recovering that information. If you're already unlocked, just flash the boot and system images individually - it may clean up whatever is corrupt.

I tried this, it recovered only 36 files out of a 28 GB data file, and the files it did recover were all just files that have been on the phone since I unlocked the bootloader, flashed a custom recovery and flashed a stock OS so I could boot up and do all this. Frankly it seems like the files recovered were all the ones that were on the phone since I flashed a rom, none of my previous data are there. I followed the instructions to a T. Am I doing something wrong? Is the recovery software limiting me somehow because I am not using the paid version?
You have been so kind and helpful thus far, please assist me in figuring out what else I can do.
Thank you!

You can unlock your bootloader using omap flash, doing so will not cause you to lose tour data..................................

No matter how many darn times I try or how many different recovery software suites out there I try, I am getting nothing back. This is so disappointing. Can anyone please recommend something to me? A better data recovery solution? A better way to extract the data from the phone? Anything. I am desperate. I am contemplating going to a legit data recovery center and paying the $500 cause I don't know what to do anymore but I don't even know if they'll be able to do anything.

You could have just transferred files using adb and then a factory reset on your phone with the recovery.

[Q] Gnex wont boot. Cant flash from fastboot (too many links error)

CDMA GALAXY NEXUS> Hey guys, I was running Romanbb's 4.0.4 build earlier today. I clicked on a video (which may or may not have been on a porn site) all of a sudden my screen went all wacky. Where it was kind of fuzzy and running diagnal across the screen. I could only see part of it. I thought I might have gotten a virus or something because i have never had one of my devices do this before. So I immideatly rebooted the phone into recovery and wiped eveything including formatting system. I went to flash a nandroid I had of black ice and in the middle of flashing that my phone rebooted itself and stayed there (bootlooping at the google logo) I can get into fastboot and I can get into recovery about one out of every ten times but I cant do anything in recovery because the phone turns itself off insted of booting recovery most of the time (I have clockwork touch) When I do get into recovery without it turning off it reboots if I try to flash anything. It seems to be stable in fastboot (thank god!) but When I get it connected in Wugs Root tool kit and try to flash the stock image it goes through the motions and says FAILED on every step exept the first (which I believe is checking radio). It says ( error too many links) on the first two) and I cant remember the error on the last four but I have tried it a couple times so I can replicate it if needed. Can anyone tell me what to do from here? I really appreciate in advance!!! If this is a hardware error then I would like to get it back to stock to get it replaced. It is weird that it happened while running a rom. Its not like I messed up while flashing or anything.
ADB will recognize it in Fastboot. I already set all of that up when I rooted. when I try to flash the stock+unroot option on wugfresh's toolbox it errors out on every step like there is something wrong with my internal sd on my phone? Im wondering if I should try odin. IDK? Im hoping somebody who has seen this or had this happen before will save the day and tell me what to do.
lol why did you rush into CWM and start wiping things? you should have let it reboot and it probably could have been a one off..
you can try this http://rootzwiki.com/topic/14145-od...actory-odin-restore-402-with-radios-unrooted/
It is stable in fastboot but in cwr it is still geeking out
It still is glitching in cwr. most of the time it either turns off or reboots when I try to go into cwr. i can wipe but if I flash anything it freezes at the point where it starts writing to storage. I have never seen anything like this before.
I have now tried oden as well
It looks like it is a problem with the hardware. The phone is only a couple months old if that. So I really wish I could flash the stock image or at least get rid of cwm. but that is not looking likely. Here are a couple pics of odin showing the problem. Any guidace would be much appreciated. This SUCKS
Why in the heck are you trying to use Odin?
I can only get into fastboot and odin.
CWM wont let me do anything. it crashes and reboots into a bootloop if I try to flash anything. The poster above suggested odin. I dont know what else to do. Please help if you can!
Can you get a screencap of when it fails fastbooting the stock images?
yes
yes, give me couple min and I will post it. Thank you!
I guess I cant. This is all I get now

How are you attempting to access fastboot?
Vol + and Vol - and power all at the same time
Vol + and Vol - and power all at the same time from powered off
And oden was Vol - and power at the same time from powered off
Now no matter what I push it goes to the screen with the yellow triangle.
That screen says you (now) have a corrupt partition.
At this point, you must use Odin, which is unfortunate. What URL did you use to download the image? The current image in that thread was on multiupload.

during my rooting attempt I had a problem with the two vol buttons. It was quite frustrating. Keep trying them and try pressing the power button a fraction of a second sooner.
I downloaded the one later in the thread

I can't help but I wanted to share that I had a similar experience. I was bonne stock and clicked on a you tube video and my phone immediately shut down and tried to reboot itself, but only would boot loop. I had to manually reformat my partitions to recover. Sounds like your case might be even worse. Still don't know what my problem was.

Thanks. Any feedback is appreciated.
so you can't get into bootloader or odin screen any more? if so try using a Jig it works to get the phone into odin mode for me. i used the same usb jig i made for the captivate.
I got the same suggestion from someone else. I have to wait until radio shack opens in the morning and I will give it a shot. Otherwise, I went by verizon and they are having samsung send me a replacment. I would much rather keep this one if I can though
I tried flashing the stock image from fastboot and it failed though when I could get there, and I also tried flashing the stock image through oden when I could get there and both failed multiple times so I don't have much hope. I think something broke.
I am headed to radio shack now. Be back soon with a answer as to wheather I can save my baby or not.

I had a similar problem as you. Upon getting the phone I rooted and used the FreeGee app from the Google Play store to unlock the bootloader. Everything seemed fine and dandy, until one day when I let my phone's battery drain completely. Pluggin it in to a wall charger resulted in the failed boot where the LG logo flashes before going to a blank, but backlit screen. Luckily, the first few times this happened, through a combination of quickly plugging and unplugging the usb cord and holding the volume up+power button, I could get it into recovery (TWRP). Then a simple cache & dalvik cache wipe, and the phone would boot up as if nothing ever happened. Very strange.
Well yesterday this happened again, however, this time there was no getting the phone into recovery. My previous methods of button mashing and plugging and unplugging weren't working. So, I decided to bite the bullet and use LGNPST to get back to ZV7. Now, like you mentioned, this failed boot would automatically happen, without pressing the power button to turn it on. So it was difficult to get the phone to stay off. I found that with the phone unplugged, if you continue to press the power button until the blank backlit screen turns off, AND continue to hold the power button for an additional five seconds, the phone would stay off and not auto power on into the failed boot.
Once I was able to get the phone to stay off, I pressed the middle of the volume key to depress both volume up and down, and then plugged a usb cord that was attached to my computer. This powered on the phone into download mode. Following the LGNPST guide I was able to get to around 67% complete before my phone turned off and an error message flashed on the computer screen telling me to power cycle the phone and reconnect. Well, the whole 67%/85% LGNPST failure is apparently common and not indicative of an actual failure; HOWEVER, my phone became completely unresponsive. It wouldn't power on at all. It didn't matter if the usb was unplugged or connected to the computer or wall charger. So, I was forced to unplug the battery. I followed this tutorial and successfully disconnected and reconnected the battery cord, and the phone shot back to life. It even booted up into the factory stock ZV7 rom. I guess that LGNPST was successful. It looked like I was on my way to returning my phone to breezy's deodexed ZV9 stock rom that I was previously running.
I went ahead and re-rooted, ran the FreeGee app again, and rebooted into recovery. Then I made a backup and attempted to flash my new rom. Now, I think this is where I royally screwed up. I was pleasantly surprised to see my screen layout and all of my settings still intact after LGNPST back to ZV7 and thought I could just wipe the caches and ignore the factory reset and system wipe before flashing. Perhaps it was this, but part of me also thinks there might be something wrong with my battery draining extremely fast in recovery.
I proceeded to flash and all seemed good, but rebooting resulted in the LG logo failed boot that we have already discussed. So, I went ahead and repeated the LGNPST-re-root process numerous times (switching to the freegee 0.5 batch file instead of the app). Everytime after the first initial restore, I could never get my phone to enter recovery. As soon as I rebooted after using freegee, the phone would be soft bricked again. Sometimes I would get the LG logo thing, other times I would get the dreaded alternating flashing red notification light and soft keys. A battery pull was usually required in these circumstances before I could get back into download mode to start all over.
I was about ready to give up when I took to the LGOG irc channel. That's when Xboxfanj stepped in and helped me out IMMENSELY. Over the course of several hours, he walked me through flashing some partitions in ADB. At times it seemed like there was no hope and that I should have just returned the phone, but he failed to acquiesce, we pushed forth trying a couple of other bootloader options. The new bootloader appeared to have fixed the phones erratic behavior with powering on and off, but I had no rom to boot into and no recovery. Xboxfanj recommended using fastboot to flash over a recovery. Once in the new bootloader screen my Windows XP machine detected new hardware and wanted some drivers. I attempted to use the [ADB/FB/APX Driver] Universal Naked Driver 0.72, but XP indicated that I was missing 'winusbcoinstaller2.dll'.
I grabbed winusbcoinstaller2.dll from here and all was good. Fastboot recognized the phone, I was able to flash recovery and subsequently boot into recovery. From there I reformatted the system, wiped data/factory restore, wiped cache, wiped dalvik cache, and flashed breezy's ZV9 deodexed rom.
Fortunately, after around 7 hours, I am happy to say my phone is back to being rooted, unlocked, and running ZV9. It powers on and off properly and can get into recovery without a hitch. I'm still curious what will happen if I let my battery drain completely. Perhaps I'll try it some time this week. I'll be sure to post back here if/when I do that. All in all, it was a harrowing, but educational experience.
Anyway, just wanted to give a big THANK YOU to Xboxfanj! You really are the man :good:. Thanks for your patience and determination.

HELP !! Phone doesn't boot past recovery !

Hello guys !
I have done something terrible and phone is not booting up part recovery now.
I had rooted the phone with one-click universal method without any hasstles and then try to reboot into bootloader by pressing VolDown+Power button.
Eventually ended up rebooting in original android recovery. I tried rebooting with option in that but it was not responding.
While trying it out, I mistakenly wiped cache partition.
Now NO MATTER WHAT COMBINATION I TRY, phone doesn't boot up past the recovery.
Please help me sort out this mess. I need to sell the phone.

If you don't mind maybe loosing data, LGNPST back to stock, and try again.

I posted this in the other thread you asked about this in, but here it is:
I wipe my cache partition all the time. I am rooted but still locked (I don't think that will last much longer). Anyways, in the android recovery with jelly bean, I found that you no longer use the power button for selecting or confirming. It's now done using the menu button below your screen (on the right) . At least that's how it works for my phone.
I hope this works for you.

Mate.. after getting the phone booted up I installed FreeGee app from Play store to get bootloader unlocked and flash recovery , but downloading recovery stopped due to an error. So I rebooted the phone and since then Wifi is not detecting my home wifi network.
I then tried to do erase cache partition and even factory reset but nothing helped.
Do u know what else I can do to get it right ?
Cheers !
I haven't fully unlocked my phone yet. Only rooted it. However it sounds like you might have to LGNPST to set things right. Maybe someone else that is more knowledgeable with this issue could chime in and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that might be your only option.
Sorry I'm not of much help for you on this one.

Thanks mate.. will try this
OK.. mate I tried the LGNPST method. Downloaded LGNPST and stock v9 bin file. Used it to flash the stock rom back to stock.
howvere even after full completion of the process without any errors , the phone stucks at LG logo forever. I have tried the process twice.
Is there something I might have missed. I followed the instruction to the line from the pastebin link. Do we have a different Dll for the stock rom then whats there in the LGNPST repository named LS970_LGNPST.dll or something ?
Hopefully this will get you going.
If you downgraded from ZVB to ZV9 heres some needed info:
If you're stuck at the 4glte screen: To get to stock recovery - Power off phone. You need to hold power button for about 20 sec to get it to turn off. Then press and hold vol down+power - The LG logo will come on, then the capacitive lights. Immediatly let go when the capacitive lights turn on.
It takes a few seconds to work. Data wipe/Factory reset. Reboot.
And if you happen to reboot into recovery after this upgrade? Use the "menu" button on the led lights (far right when holding it) to get it to accept your commands. power button won't work.
---------- Post added at 09:14 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:08 AM ----------
If that doesn't work try this.
Get into DL mode and run "teeny bin" from the post I sent you to, to get LGNPST. Try the main one first, then the optional one if it still doesn't get you into TWRP. You just might have one of those "haunted phones" that seem to be poping up.

Do u have a link of any stock based rooted deodexed rom for this ? I don't want to flash bin images via LGNPST but want the stock look and feel
Imperium and Lifeless are our only 2 stock ROMs so far. In the Development section. Both are very nice.

[Q] Screen flickering / Bootloop -> Is my Nexus dead? Data recovery possible?

Hello,
just some hours ago my Galaxy Nexus (SC-04D) rebooted while lying on the table next to me. After several sings of vibration I noticed that the phone doesn't boot completely.
When switching on the phone I get the turn-on-vibration, then the google letters are displayed. Most times the word "google" flickers from left to right over the screen (only the line where the word is supposed to be). Sometimes it boots further and I get the colored "X" displayed. This symbol starts flickering, too and if it went so far it reboots.
Here are two pictures I took from the phone failing to boot:
picpaste.com/img_0001_01-Rmm7kDYb.jpg
picpaste.com/img_0001-eoLqVoiM.jpg
The phone is running stock Android from Docomo. The phone is about 14 months old and has never been unlocked, rooted, modded, taken a bath, ... 'til now.
I tried starting with and without SIM-card, with and without charger attached and let it lie around for several minutes without battery between my tries.
Is there any chance to get my data from the phone or even get it fixed? Please give me a hint what I can do.
Well the Red exclamation mark means that there is a problem with the phone reading the build path. Since you have never rooted the phone, this would mean that the files got corrupt on the phone. With a non-rooted phone a Factory Reset is about the only solution, but is probably only a temporary fix. This is most likely caused by too many apps on the phone and it just freaked out on something eventually.
I think these options might work for you, however I cannot confirm since I have rooted my phone from day one and never looked back:
Power button + up volume= recovery
Thanks GPFboy for your fast response,

As far as I understand a factory reset results in a complete loss of data on the phone, right? So without root/unlock there's no chance to get my data from the phone? That would be really bad.

What is "too many"? I think there are about 35 apps installed atm. By the moment the problem arose wifi and 3g-data,BT,GPS were disabled and just a minute before I took a look how late it was. So nothing special.

then press (i think) power and vol up and try and see if you can wipe just cache.

ok, I tried that several time now, but it didn't work. The only thing when I select recovery and press the power button is that I get the google logo and then the dead android + red exclamation sign, but this screen is scrambled and shows flickering pixels as shown in one of my pictures in the first post. So recovery mode seems not to work for me?
Is there a software or hardware problem with my device?

You can try to unlock your boorloader and flash a custom recovery like cwm or twrp. Maybe that helps. You can always go back and re lock it.

He wants to keep his data... which, at this point, seems rather impossible.
If fastboot doesn't solve it, i would try omapflash, OP. That "flickering" doesn't look good.

Yes exactly this is the point. Since I don't have a current data backup the first thing to try is getting my data from the phone. I already tried temporary loading the clockwork recovery through fastboot - with the galaxy nexus toolkit and by hand(sdk) - but it failed ("Bootloader locked").
What I'm wondering about is the fact that the phone seems to behave normally in odin and fastbood mode but going nuts the moment it's expected to boot. Besides the flickering google logo and the "matrix-modded" dead android it even ended up in a totally green screen one time.
At the moment I don't dare trying to unlock/flash the phone because of being afraid getting stuck and ending up with the phone being in some kind of undefined / totally broken state. Initially I was in hope of being able to rescue my data but now i will try my luck with docomo support first.
As far as I understood omapflash is primary used for recovering bricked phones not even starting to odin/fastboot mode. But thanks to your hint I found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2016628 "Unlock bootloader on GT-I9250 without wipe and without root" This might bring some chance for data access.
I will try to get through 1 to 4 of the guide first and see how far I get.
If this won't work I might try to unlock, recover and try to "undelete" what's possible. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994705)
Does this order make sense?
Btw, having a dead phone is bad, of course, even when I got it new for 2300Yen but loosing some pictures i really liked and having no phone atm currently hurts more. Especially when knowing that I was thinking of copying all photos to my computer only one day before when I pulled only some minor important ones from the phone I needed for work and planned to do a full backup and unlock this weekend when I get back my 'Milestone' currently lent to someone else.
Once again something I learned. Backup! Even you phone.

It will work actually, I read/also replied to that thread! I had forgotten about it, sorry. I must say that if you had already read the stickies that matter, you'd already know about it.
It will unlock your bootloader, bypassing fastboot. Still, it's not for the faint hearted. I refered to omapflash because its a low level tool, it doesn't require the bootloader to be unlocked, and is able to restore the bootloader to working state, and I got there because you mentioned you see graphical glitches/flickering which may indicate bootloader partition failure and/or consequent corruption.
I think that's your best shot at trying to get your data back. After unlock, boot to fastboot and 'fastboot boot custom_recovery.img', and grab your stuff (if you can) from /data/.

Your hint was very helpful for me getting the right direction since I'm just starting to dig into all this stuff.
Unlocking went quite well. Writing back to the phone worked without a problem and after that it's shown as unlocked in fastboot mode.
It even started loading clockwork recovery with fastboot. But the initial cw recovery screen (their logo and the cw recovery footer) was already shown on a scattered screen (google logo + unlocked lock was fine). After that the usb port connected and disconnected several times, then the screen went blank.
May this be because of corrupted fs or defective hw?
From my understanding with omapflash one have raw access to the phones internal memory similar to with dd on Unix/Linux. So currently I'm trying to dump ("upload") the emmc from the phone - actually in smaller chunks since omapflash needs to allocate all the memory in advance for the upload and to prevent interruptions. This will take a while...
After that I want to try to 'cat' the parts together and mount the filesystem - might be possible to do this from linux since it seems to be ext4 filesystems

ok i'm in.
For future reference, holding all 3 hardware keys did nothing.
What worked was holding power, then once the Google logo pops up, continue holding power and also hold volume down.
Now to download a rom or system.img....

This system.img worked : https://mega.co.nz/#!PBIiEbBJ!bKpdHxegOVlde12nsu_ulEyRq7UsANLLQab1IZjLIGc

If you are not good with timing your button presses, you can just press Power+VolDown the whole time until it goes into the bootloader.

Most important thing is that you got it going again!! Just be careful with whatever you flash/modify in the future! If it does mess up in the future, at least now you know what to do. I guess that's the positive way of looking at it, this was just a good (even though scary) learning experience!!
