No and no.

There are some Chinese websites that can unlock without using htcdev but once you unlock. the phone will know that it has been unlocked.
If you relock. The boot loader will say relocked rather than locked so HTC will know that it has been done. Even if you don't use their tools to do it

Sign this petition to make a bootloader S-off

Please sign this petition https://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/htcbootloader
This petitiion is to ask HTC to make a bootloader unlock tool for the Wildfire S so users can do what they want with the device they bought including using modified boot, recovery and system images. I feel that HTC should not lock there bootloaders at all because once a customer has bought the phone it is no longer HTC's property it belongs to the customer after buying the handset. So please HTC allow use to unlock are bootloaders so we can modifiy are phones the way we want them to be.
This is for the moment only way to unlock the Htc wildfire s .
Thanks

Need some help please...

Hi guys,
I bought HTC wildfire S... Its a branded Australian version as i see 'NEXT' network logo on phone and box...
It has been unlocked coz i am using a different network in Asia...
Since it doesn't come in warranty, i want to Root it, and start installing custom roms on it..i know much about HTC sensation coz i own that too and have good knowledge of Android stuff...
Can someone tell me what should i do to Root it?
I saw in forums here that unlocking bootloader is via HTCdev and xtc clip...
I don't care about loosing warranty stuff but i want to enable ROOT and flash custom roms and remove the NEXT network animation on boot and remove all bloatwares..
Unlock bootloader and then root the phone. tutorials are in the forums.

Unlock & root only with registration at htcdev.com

Considering the One X/S as my next device.
I read somewhere that htcdev.com registration (and bootloader unlock) will void your guarantee forever, and based on experience I will need HTC service at some point.
Did I understand it correct, that in order to unlock the bootloader and root, I would need to register at htcdev.com. There no other way?

From what I have been reading just unlocking your bootloader won't void your warranty. But HTC will be able to tell what software you have installed in your phone according to this post HERE
So it's really up to HTC whether or not they fix your under warranty if you ever decide to use custom ROMs.

Hmmm...spooky!
So even if we manage to unlock and root without htcdev.com, HTC cache what roms we use in a hidden folder that cannot be flushed. I'm sure HTC is not going to use such information at my advantage.
If that's really the case, I guess HTC is no longer an option for me?
When I used htcdev to unlock my htc legend I was required to send what is a unique device token to HTC before they send me a unlocker binary file, obviously to me that device token tells HTC exactly which phone has been unlocked and is stored in a data base somewhere, so if you send it for repair, even if you do manage to get your phone back to stock again before, the records will show that the phone has been tampered with.
That's what i believe anyway.

Well I'm not sure about that. Maybe with S-OFF we can clean the cache, but not really sure.

Sending the token means you may have unlocked your phone. They don't void warranty for just unlocking your boot loader.

[Q] Relocked bootloader - warranty?

Hello all, I'm new on HTC One x and I wanto to ask you about warranty.
What about it when I'll relock bootloader and install all stock like rom, boot.img etc, will HTC take this to the service?
As i know bootloader will show "relocked". Service said they won't repair phone for free if there is "unlocked".
Some people get away with it while other don't.
I believe that if it is all stock and isn't running, in HTC's terminology (illegal software) then you should be ok.
Only one way to fins out......

Yes this is a very grey area !
When I had DHD it was much simpler.. I had S-OFF.. As i know there is no S-OFF method?
Can you tell me an example and issues when people had warranty repair?

Hello i had same problems with HTC one v and I unlock again with HTC dev they give the unlock code again...
Do the unlock process with htcdev.com again and you'll be provided with a new unlock file

at first, you will need the following things:
- Stock RUU
- Stock Recovery Image
- relocked HBoot
Foolproof way is relock bootloader and flash ruu that matches your CID. Haven't read back too far in this thread, feeling lazy, make sure your HBoot version is below 1.36 as I'm assuming you'll be flashing ICS. I don't believe there are any JB ruu's available to date.
