[Q] ROM bible for the GS3? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

So, with so many ROMs out for our beloved SGS 3, how could one decide which ROM they want to try? trying all the ROMs can be time consuming, so i remembered a ROM bible thread from way back in the HTC G1 forum. basically, each individual ROM was rated based on stability, speed, battery life, force closes(not really a problem for us, i imagine), and overall daily use friendliness rating. are there any gentlemen who would like to start such a thread? i'm not a developer by any means, otherwise i would gladly take lead. anyhow, here's the thread\ROM bible:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=668090

I have the next few weeks off, well starting tonight, and might take a stab at it, if someone wants to team up and share some thoughts on how to break it up we can easily knock something nice out with in a week or so im definitely in. Ive read almost all all threads im an avid AOKP/ CM user but need wifi calling in aome areas so try a lot of the TOUCHWIZ based roms also.

Haha what a bad idea.

If you'd like to PM me with rom you have used and or like to use and are willing to test. I've tried almost all TW ROMs besides maybe 2 of them, CM based I haven't tried the ones with Paranoid in it besides PacMan ROM I did try that one.

In my experience there are two subsets of ROMs.
1. Custom Roms (AOKP / Cyanogen mod / Paranoid Android): Most customizations less stability
2. Near stock Touchwiz(TW) ROMs or AOSP: Best stability and generally less customizations
What I suggest to people looking to install a ROM is to stick with a AOSP ROM that includes some customization, sure AOKP / CM is awesome and I love what they do but their ROMs are flaky and problem prone. My problem is that I really hate TW ROMs due to the lack of functions that I really enjoy in custom roms and the lack of being able to change certain features.
-Drag across the top to change brightness: Fixes my issue with auto brightness
-Hold back to kill
-Toggles
-Circle battery (though I think this is also in some)
-no annoying lockscreen -.-
One ROM I am looking at is Liquid Smooth because its an AOSP ROM with some AOKP customizations. Unfortunately for me that the only version so far that I have used with little issue is RC8 (with CM kernel) but I hear others have better luck than I do.
Also would like to point out that JB is being released (or has been) so some roms should improve on the stability.

Which rom to chose?

I wanted to ask you guys which roms are you using and why
back when I had SGS2 on AT&T (international) version I used to change roms a lot because some looked nice and i remember when first trying ICS on SGS2. Anyway I am running AOKP B29 battery life is really awesome on that one but I get bored of it -_-
I wanted to try MIUI and I did try but it's really slow.. I heard MIUI is popular with theming nd stuff
any recommendations?

Well what is the benefit of stock.. no extra mods at all...
AOKP seems to bring some features but I am all about the looks
go back to AOKP B29 until MIUI releases a FULLY FUNCTIONAL stable daily driver.
then use ADW EX to customize ur screen how ever u like.

+1 for AOKP... not a huge fan of MIUI at all.
And no, don't use ADW EX. Apex Launcher on the market is free and is optimized for ICS.
ADW EX hasn't been updated in months. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...51bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5hbmRkb2VzLmxhdW5jaGVyIl0.
aokp is probabely the most feature rich and popular and usually has new features in each build that other roms add to their next builds. It's pretty stable (especially in milestone builds) and works well. Speed is same as stock in my experience. frequent updates which is nice.
gummy has same features more or less in a different package and also comes out with unique features from time to time. Pretty similiar to aokp if you ask me.
Liquidsmooth is 90% aokp but it feels a little faster due to some tweaks. It's much more buggy though imo. I've heard a lot of people with wifi, gps and nfc problems. It also lacks a little polish. I'd wait this one out.
CNA (codenameandroid) doesn't have any new features because it's 95% kang of aokp and gummy. It's probabely the most feature packed. It is surprisingly stable though: probably because obvious bugs in aokp and gummy's new features are resolved before they are released with cna. It doesn't get a lot of respect in the community due to kanging but if you don't care about xda drama, it's just as fine.
BAMF is a little different from aokp and gummy. It doesn't share a lot of code with them and has it's own toggles and settings which are kinda nicer. It lacks a lot of aokp/gummy features but has most of the important ones. It also has some unique stuff baked in. It's as stable as gummy and aokp milestones but the updates are much less frequent. bamf devs prefer to do a lot of testing behind close doors before release. If you are a crackflasher, stay away. Speed is ok.
CM9 Nightlies are WIP. It has very few features and a lot of place holders. Stay away unless you really like the cutting edge.
MIUI is nowhere near fully function. It's fine to have a little fun with from time to time but definitely not a daily driver. Wait at least 2-3 weeks for this one.
My personal choice: Black ICE, which is basically aokp with a dark theme. you can find it at rootzwiki.
that's pretty much all the popular gsm roms. I don't know about lte specific roms.
My vote goes for Axi0m Patient Zero
I suggest using the search function or perhaps waste time just like everyone else and try different roms, kernels and mods. im sure there are numerous threads that start out like this, Hi! What ROM/Kernel would you suggest!?
Sheesh....some ppl are becoming lazy in READING and SCROLLING thru other threads that have already been answered and solved. I guarantee another thread SIMILAR to this will pop up sometime soon.
Google search and XDA search is ur best friend. Learn to use it. Since you have used MIUI b4, im sure its not that difficult to try the other roms out there. :banghead:

I use stock 4.04 too. But I'm not a fan of flashing a different ROM everyday so may be that's why I love stock.
Im using AOKP latest version now - is great as keeps all the looks of stock but with the extras that stock should have had to start with.
Looking forward to a "daily driver" version of MIUI is out - so much better for theming.

[Q] Should I Install CM 10?

I am a long time Android and long time CM user. I have been using an LG G2x for way too long and finally got fed up with it. I have a brand new Galaxy S3 arriving tomorrow and am trying to figure out what to do when I get it.
For those of you have have used both the stock OS and CM 10, what are the advantages of each? By rooting and installing CM 10, what stock Samsung features will I lose? Are there any you think I might actually miss? So just in general, I was hoping someone who used both the stock OS and CM 10 for a decent amount of time could explain to me exactly what I will gain/lose by rooting and installing CM 10 on this phone. Thanks!
Not a good thread at all to start up man, just try them out and see for your self. Every one likes different things so it's kind of hard for us to just assume your needs... you know what I mean? Lots like both for different reasons, some always revert back to a stock rom some always go back to a cm rom.

Leave it stock but rooted for the first few days to see what you think. Many think the extra features and that its stable and fast are worth staying stock based. Still a lot of others opt for cm or aokp regardless. Just give em both their fsir chance!

That is why I didn't ask if I should flash CM 10 or not. I very simply asked what the differences were between stock and CM 10. I am wondering what features I will have with stock that I will lose with CM 10 and vice versa. That is a very fair question to ask of people who have already used both. I am trying to avoid trying both by going through a hassle and having to reinstall my programs and reconfigure my settings multiple times if I don't have to.
You lose all samsung stock features. That should be a no brainer. No motion activities, no smart stay (natively) no touchwiz, no wifi calling. Vanilla stock is what it always is, clean, no bloat, and super fast... what I said wasnt in any way being rude. It was exteremly truthful, and to the point.

Wifi calling doesn't work on CM 10? I have been using it on CM 7 for my G2x.
So do you miss any of those Samsung features? I guess are they gimmicky or actually nice to have? From reviews, I have read that stock is really fast, so not sure if I gain speed by going to CM. Have you noticed speed improvements with CM 10 over stock?
I know but its so deeply integrated into framework and settings now its a pain. And no I personally don't miss those gimmicky features, but allot of people do. I stick to tw roms, because of battery. It always seems to last longer on stock based roms for me. Otherwise I prefer cm based roms. Lets just say I'll be moving to cm as soon as I feel it is closer to 100% in my eyes. Or the nexus 4 lol. And the only way I can feel it being 100% is by me testing it, not asking others. That's what I meant with my 1st post.

I have to agree with mt3g here. AOSP ROMs are not the same as TW ROMs. I used TW for awhile when I first got my SGS3 and flashed pretty much all of them out there. I wasn't concerned with battery use, as I consider myself a battery expert. I was more interested in performance and features that were exclusive to TW and AOSP. They are so different that the only way to really get to know each other is to test drive them yourself.
Now I am on LiquidSmooth (AOSP base) and I love it. I am getting massive battery life, have tethering (I thethered my tablet to is almost all day yesterday after a bad flash [on the tablet not the phone]), Theme chooser springs a bit of life back into the eyecandy part. <--sometimes people flash not bc they want a new ROM but a new look .
Will I go back to TW? Sure. I tested Doc's ROM before he released it and I like it plenty enough to run it as a daily driver. But this is XDA and what are here for?
What do we want? A custom ROM
When do we want it? NO ETAs!!!! :cyclops:

Very well said. :good:
I personally never ever ran a touchwiz or sense ROMs on any device I've ever owned for more than a day. I just missed the full control cm ROMs give. Ever since my HD2 I've ran cm7 up to cm10 on my s3. I really never notice the features being lost from a tw ROM mostly because I don't use them. Never really thought their "advertised" features were all that.

I stuck to stock ICS TW for a couple of days and I didn't enjoy it.
It just seemed too much and I wanted a closer to stock experience.
Made the switch to CM10. Greatest thing ever.
It's simple, effective, and works in pretty much every way that I would like.
The only thing that I miss from TW is the Messaging app.

May I know why? I'm right now with the Galaxy SI and on CM10, hoping to get the S3 and on the same dilemma. Right now my Skype works well on the CM10, Viber works only on speaker phone.
Having tried cm 10/aokp as well as TW ROMs for extended periods of time, I can say the following:
Although at first missing a certain TW feature might seem like a drawback- the feeling comes from what you're used to, and after a few days or week you will likely forget those features which you previously had which you thought were so important. For me the TW calendar (s Planner) was the big thing I was missing- since for a while I really couldn't find a good substitute which looked as good and performed as well! Finally I found one, so now I don't even compare anymore, but even if I hadn't found a substitute I'm sure I would have moved on at some point.
Point is, base your choice on the majority of the benefits that you'll get from the respective ROM. Personally, I like aokp/cm10 precisely because of its overall simplistic aesthetic ( I'm in love with the native jelly bean fonts used in the notification bar) and its native ability to theme. In terms of performance and extra tweaks, there are plenty of custom TW ROMs which are on par with the aosp ones (IMO). So I think it comes down to the overall feel/look, and pure personal preference.

you will lose wifi calling, you will lose the ability to upload music straight from the music player to drop box, you will lose your mind, however, once you run a JB ROM and use google now for the first time, and you will go ape over the amount of customization available to cm10 users.
honestly, used "stock" for about 3 weeks when i first got my device back in july, flashed cm10, and never looked back. words cannot describe how amazing and feature-packed a cm10 ROM is...
flash hellfire 1.3 (if you don't mind the red), and give slim bean a shot if you don't want the red. I have had nothing but positive results with those two.
also, follow my guide in this section for the flashing process.
good luck.
WiFi calling
For me WiFi calling is the biggest feature, and extremely important. I don't have T-Mobile signal in my lab, where I spend most of the time and WiFi calling is the only hope. This is why I'm staying with the stock for now.
But if anyone can show me a way to get WiFi calling on CM10, I will be really thankful. Hate the stock rom from the bottom of my heart!!
-Thanks
The camera on cm10 is whats holding me back but once they come out with cm10.1 based on JB 4.2 then i think ill root and rom my phone.

Nexus Roms

Hiya everyone,
So I just became a Galaxy Nexus owner as of yesterday, and wondering what support is out there for this phone dev side as well whats everyones fav rom? I'm quite happy with the stock AOSP 4.2.1, however I do miss some customization of roms like from CM and AOKP when I was a S2/One X owner.
Wondering if its really worth that much of a change though however to go custom? I used to build on the S2 side of things so if there seems to be a strong community on the Nexus side maybe I'll reboot the old linux box.

Also tried all the 4.1 roms but the best that fits my wishes is CNA with a stock look and tons of customization, along with faux' latest kernel, 23m-sr
Paranoidandroid hands down, no rom on this site is comparable when it comes to speed, smoothness, customizations and battery life all rolled into one, others may have one of those better but none have the combination and NONE have the amount of options.
What I am using currently can be found in my signature below.
If you're looking for a stock ROM that's merely been rooted and deodexed, bigxie's ROMs are solid and popular.
If you want a lean, clean, fast ROM with only the most useful modifications, it would be hard to beat Rascarlo's ROMs.
If you want ROMs with mods galore, some of the most popular ones are CyanogenMod, CodenameAndroid, and ParanoidAndroid. But there are plenty of others with dedicated followers.
I'm using Mmuzzy's AOSP 4.2.1 with kmameguy's MODs. I have the nice CM circle percent battery and other MODs, with the stability of 4.2.1 (as stable as it gets ATM) and probably 15-20 hours on battery. I don't think there are a lot of customizations on any 4.2 ROMs yet, as they're dealing mostly with stability issues. I've tried Factory, Vanir's beta, Xylon, and others... none have been super impressive to leave Mmuzzy's...

PA3+ vs CM 10.1.2. Yep, another bummer. GSM only.

As we finally got CM 10.1.2 Stable Release for GNex (here), I'd like to discuss these two ROM titans.
I really like this PA3+ ROM because of its speed and really stunning interface, but I'm still swaying because of CM's team experience.
So, I'd like to hear, what you guys do actually think about this.
I outline the next main criteria for me when choosing a ROM:
Speed
Security
Battery life
I know that some of you already have installed and chosen the best ROM for you and I'd like to know your opinion.
So, looking forward to hearing from you.

[Q] Can someone reccomend me a lightweight kitkat rom?

Hey guys, I have an old Galaxy Nexus which is currently unrooted and on stock AOSP Jelly Bean. I'm from Europe so not sure about this Sprint/Verizon mumbo jumbo. It's started to get pretty slow and battery life is quite appalling. I've visited the development forum but it's all quite overwhelming - with loads of ROMs and variants of those ROMs, plus a bunch of kernels.
I dont really care for tiny customisation or the extra features of e.g. CM, just about performance and battery. Perhaps the only thing I'd like is Screen Mirroring (which, as far as i can tell, isn't enabled on the latest Galaxy Nexus SlimKat rom). Can anyone reccomend me a good ROM/Kernel that will extend the life of this once great phone?
Cheers
You are using a maguro if you are wondering I'm sorry but the only answer is to try for yourself.. Just download a ROM and see if you like it. If you dont then move on to the next. Same with kernels. If you want maximum performance or battery tweak some stuff with trisckster. Nephilimps settings are a good starting point.

Fair enough, i might give that a crack. In all honesty, I'm sure there are multiple solutions to my request, I'm just wondering what other people had grown to be happy with, so I'm not stabbing wildly in the dark.
I'm gonna say fancy kernel and Slimkat is a great place to start. I use fancy with max frequency at 1036MHz for good battery and performance. Slimkat is small, not too many features, and it has most bugs ironed out, so it's stable. If you really want good battery, then I would use a 4.3.1 rom. Take your pick there, I recommend Vanir.
