[Q] How to get an official update on a T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2 rooted by Odin ? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

My T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2 was rooted by Odin, so the system said that the device has been modified, software updates are not available when I checked for the Software updates (for the new released multi-window feature, cool). The device is still with its stock rom but only rooted.
Is there anyway to get the device updated ? Thanks
Screen shots are attached:

I hooked up the phone to PC and updated via Kies. Works okay but I lost root, and device now says normal. There's prolly some way to keep root, but overall no big deal to me..

yeah, I tried Kies, but it failed, leaving me a screen saying that the update has encountered an issue and suggesting me to try rebuild the connection again, but actually the computer didn't recognize the device anymore. It ends up refleshing a stock rom using Odin. But the apps and data was still there and I got a OTA update...of course, the root was gone anyway ,thanks a lot.

Use triangle away, the the unroot option in superuser. Viola ! stock device ready for updates !

Hardware ID Missing after rooting......

Hello.
I used the Toolkit to root my Note 2, and I had to use option 4 on the rooting menu, Install Custom Recovery, Install via Recovery to get it to work. I tried several times via the Odin tool and Twrp recovery, and the phone kept booting into Android Recovery instead of Twrp recovery.
I finally used Odin to flash back to stock ROM that I got here, but, along the way, even though the Toolkit was able to connect to my Note 2, I get the Hardware ID missing, and I cannot connect to it any longer like I could after I installed the initial drivers.
Anything I can do and stay rooted?
Change usb ports or restart your device. Mine did it last night and I fixed it by doing both..
I have the same problem.
Changing ports and restarting in most cases didn't help and only in few cases I managed to access files on the phone via USB.
Any other suggestion how to solve this?
don't use windows..

I was able to gain root back using the toolkit. I flashed stock rom image I believe the ROM from the factory then flashed back stock recovery. Went back in after I updated and re-rooted to flash the triangle away. Now I need to unroot and after speaking with Sprint Rep on phone and trying a few things they advised me to take it to store to let them try it. I believe ALL of my problems started when I tried to use Mobile Odin Pro to flash the latest update to LJC (should I have been on stock recovery?). It started to flash then stopped and went into CWM recovery which is the recovery that the toolkit flashed. I for some strange reason was going to flash the update from there except I didn't have it in the right place on my sd card (couldn't access it GOD I'm a Dumbass!). God help me cause I'm too stupid to even understand what side loading is let alone how to do it. If some kind soul would take pity on me and pm me I could get a handle on the differences between HTC and Samsung. Anyway need to unroot now. Oh I keep seeing in the flash counter saying 1 but I'm on stock rom with stock kernel and stock recovery how do I get it to zero. Using triangle away. Anyway to check counter with stock recovery?
OH yeah does anyone keep getting "Internal Error Code 1500" in addition to the hardware id is missing?
Thanks to everyone that takes time to help idiots like me. I promise I CAN learn.

Thank you...Unlike user: dstenc, the above procedure fixed my issue. As has been the case many times, XDA helpful users to the rescue!
 :good:
Just to report that for now I've found woraround. I've installed old drivers 1.4.103.0 and now both Kies and file access works.
Still looking for final solution with latest drivers.
Could you walk me through your fix?

I don't remember link. I googled so you might try that way.
Just FYI, even with older drivers I have sporadic Hardware ID Missing error, but far too less than with the latest version.
I'm posting this to keep it to the top of this board.
This is my second Note 2 in 2 weeks. I returned the first one because it stated Hardware ID missing, so within my first 2 weeks Sprint gave me a new one thinking that it was my phone. While at the Sprint store, and not yet rooted, we installed the unit and removed the unit 15 times to see if we could get it to have the Missing Hardware ID to pop up, it DIDN'T pop up once, so I thought I was good to go.
I came home and did the common root method that uses Galaxy Note 2 Toolbox. I IMMEDIATELY started getting the Missing Hardware ID again.
So now that we have it localized, what could be missing or creating a problem from the root procedure from the Galaxy Note Toolbox 2???
What I find really strange is that many are not experiencing this problem or they are just living with it.
I even tried the USB Switcher that appeared to install and does switch between Mass Storage and MTP, but although my PC makes the upward noise that sounds like it is installing and recognizing the USB Mass Storage, it doesn't end up recognizing it. It was ZATTA's build but he said it didn't work for his Galaxy 3 or Note 2 either.
Will anyone find a cure????
This will be no fun to have to deal with for the next 2 years.
Chime in PLEASE!!!!!! Even if it's only to insult me, I don't care if you have a cure.
Regards
Dave
if you do Google search, it's a known issue. From what I read, it's a driver issue. Some have had luck using the older Samsung USB drivers. You have downloand them, and install, and have your PC completely disconnected from the internet before plugging in your GN2 after the install. Appaarently the drivers on Microsoft's servers are bad; may be the wrong device.
I've done this, and still have the issue. I just find I don't have plug and unplug the USB cable as much.
What I have seen, the PC does connect to the GN2. It just doesn't recognize it as a storage device. It wants to use it as a modem, probably from the tethering capabilities with a USB OTG cable.
It may not be so much that it's not wide spread, but more that not everyone uses the GN2 as storage device or connects it their PC.
I dont think this is all due to Windows issue. This is what i notice before and after root.
If you have restore to Original Stock ROM, you will notice that your device doesnt encounter this issue.
If you have rooted your device Custom ROM or Flash CMW (this resulted as Binary Counter increased), you would have Hardware Missing Id issue. Somehow the MTP is not working.
If you have Flash your device with a pre rooted stock rom, there is no issue at all until you flash CMW where flashing increase counter.
How i notice this, i have root/unroot my device like 20 times since i got my device.
The issue is here is more of where Binary Counter Increase, in Windows 7 you would face Hardware ID Missing issue. Restart and connect to other USB port will not work.
Some how we need to no let the Binary Counter changed and Triangle Away is only useful if you want to return you device to original state.

Yep I think you may be on to something. Because when I rooted I tried both TWRP and CWM and then I had to go back to stock to get to apply the LJC update. Ever since I have had the chameleon error and Handsfree activation issues. Oh my counter always says 1 and I can't remove it with triangle away. I think it says custom binary yes and the counter says 1. I am using a laptop with Windows 7 and it now recognizes the device just can't stop the errors on start up.

[Q] ics update

I rooted and debloated my s2 not expecting an official update as with my vibrant. So now I hear ICS is in kies but it won't let me DL. Recognized my phone and said update available. Starts dling and at 100% lies just shuts down any suggestions ?? Thx in advance
firmware upgrade failure fix
Easiest fix its to use kies to do an emergency firmware restore. hopefully you made a backup before starting the upgrade. if not then you can restore to stock using kies and the model and serial numbers of your device located under the battery. leave the batter out during the restore and don't let the pc battery get low nor lose internet connection or you'll have a $500 paper weight. after the restore is complete you can use odin to reflash cwm and then reinstall super user binaries through the custom recovery. if windows gives you problems with odin, as it did me after working just fine the first go around then you probably need to update 7-zip if you have that as a file compression app on your pc. and if you do i recommend switching over to jzip instead. you can get it free just google it. let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be glad to help further.
I had no problem updating my rooted and debloated S2 last weekend. Make sure you update Kies first.

What was in the update? I got an OTA notification that there is a software update for my SGSII (running ICS 4.0.4). Why do I need to use Kies?
You don't need to if you got the OTA notification.

Gonna lose it - 4.3 "Security Notice - unauthorized access..."

I searched all yesterday and today and cannot re-root after upgrading from 4.1.2 to 4.3. I always do a ton of searchs no matter what forum I'm on because I don't want to seem lazy like some others out there but this is beyond me. I registered so I could make a thread and this is what I have and the situation:
Samsung Galaxy S3 SCH-R530U
US Cellular
upgraded from 4.1.2 to 4.3

baseband version R30UVXUBMJA
build number JSS15J.R530UVXUBMJA
SE for Android status Enforcing SEPF_SCH-530U_4.3_0010
hardware version R530U.01
Previously rooted using Odin, SuperSU, Titanium Backup Pro, ODIN_CWM6.tar.md5
I took the phone back to stock using unroot through SuperSU and upgraded from 4.1.2 to 4.3 OTA with no problems. I've been trying to re-root using numerous combinations (ODIN3 v3.07) and no matter what I do the Samsung Security notice blocks rights to SuperSU (beta v1.76) and Titanium Backup Pro so it won't root. This is the message I get:
"Security notice - unauthorized access to a secured area has been blocked. Tap to learn more."
The most recent md5 file I've tried is CF-Auto-Root-d2usc-d2usc-schr530u.tar.md5 but nothing else has worked either. I'm at my wits end and my brain is about ready to explode. I just need to be able to access Titanium Backup Pro so I can shut off a few programs and processes. Any help is VERY VERY much appreciated. Thanks!!!!!
TTT for some help please.

I have same phone. Recently went to Slimbean (4.3.1). I have Triangle Away and it couldn't access root. I also used CF-Auto-Root. Used a root check app, it says I am rooted. Odin also said device passed. Super User says I am missing a binary and I need to root manually. Trying to find that info
If you find anything out please let me know. A root checker says I'm rooted but I can't access SuperSU or Titanium backup as the S3 is blocking it.
Did you get the Slimbean 4.3.1 for USCC and if so where?
There was just a new SuperSU update and it granted me access to everything. I asked if I wanted it to disable KNOX and I said yes. Titanium Backup works and so does Triangle Away. I think I'm good to go.
How did you update?

How did you update to 4.3? Did you use the simple update you can download to computer, or did you use Kies? I'm not having any luck with either. I chatted twice with a Samsung Tech person, but neither one had any help for me. Just thought I'd check to see if you could help me. It's not easy finding someone else on here with US Cellular. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I tried to download the simple update but my phone wouldn't update to the 4.3 so I did it over the air. You probably know but the OTA software update is in "about device." We have four S3s in our home and only one of them hasn't been able to get the download OTA yet. The only bug that I've found is when you start the phone it will show numerous downloads in the notifications and they will come back even if you clear them. The way to get rid of them is to go to the download icon (green arrow) and clear all the downloads and restart. Hope this helps.

I have downloaded the simple update, but get an error msg while trying to install to computer. (1152: error extracting) whatever that means. I uninstalled all Samsung anything from my computer, restarted, shut off firewall & Norton, downloaded again, but same thing while trying to install to computer. I updated to 4.1.2 this way, but keep getting an error on 4.3 update.
I tried to go through Kies. It updated Kies to 2.6, it said Kies3 was for 4.3. When I tried to hook into Kies, it refuses to accept my IMEI #. Says its incorrect. wth. The Samsung Chat Tech told me USCellular 4.3 update wasn't available yet through Kies OTA.
When I tried to get the 4.1.2 update through the phone, it would never give it to me. Even though I unrooted and used Triangle Away, it still knew my sg3 was modified. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Do you have any suggestions ? I'm not very tech savvy when it comes to these phones.
I'm sorry to bother you with this, but it's rare to find someone with USCellular on here. Thank you so much for your time.
I got the error message too so something is wrong with the download from Samsung/USCC. Just keep trying to do the OTA update and maybe it will go through. My GUESS is that Samsung and USCC stopped doing the update because of a couple bugs or issues. The reason I say that is I updated mine one day (worked), my wife's the next (worked), my son's the next days later (worked) and tried my other son's a couple days later and no update for him. I unrooted mine before the update without doing triangle away so I don't know if that really has anything to do with it at all. However, it does have to be unrooted if you do the OTA. Good luck!
I used Triangle Away, then unrooted. My phone still says 'modified' even though counter no longer says 2. When I try OTA through the phone, it constantly sticks on 'checking for updates'. I'm sure it's because it still says modified. I tried using Kies, my phone will not connect. Keeps saying my s/n is incorrect. I understand my IMEI has been corrupted.
I have started a thread on here for some help in how to get the 4.3 update.
Thank you so much for trying to help me. I will be eligible for an upgrade soon. I just may have to wait to have anything more than 4.1.2.
Again, thank you.

it looks to me like samsung are finally making a stand against rooting although i do not agree with this as i use an app called freedom and when i open it i get a security issue from Samsung
The only reason i left iphone for samsung was because i felt like they had something other apple with hardware and i was happy to do this as i could get root access but for now i see that this might not be possible for a while.
i recommend installing a normal superuser.apk and that might work but i cannot check this right now as i am out
i hope this little bit of information did help in anyway

Tab 3 8.0 update

I'm trying to update my tab 3 8.0 but I'm rooted. Is there any way to to update without unrooting?
It keeps saying this device has been modified no updates available
you could unroot if you're using super su. not sure how to do that with superuser.
if you've modified /system/app in any way you're likely to have issues as well.
There's an update? I don't see one....but...after ONLY 5 months with no love......kinda disappointed I got this thing. My Nexus 10's been updated numerous times in the same period.
Do you have a custom recovery installed? If you could download the update then you could flash it through your recovery. You can usually find firmware here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ (I don't see anything new) You can also use Kies to return your tablet back to stock using the emergency recovery feature. You have to run Kies from a computer and connect via USB cable to do it.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 factory reset questions...

I had to send my rooted Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 to Samsung for repair. I did a factory reset of my device and just received it back. My device was rooted stock prior to me doing the factory reset. It has been a year since I rooted this device, and I would like to know if someone could point me in the right direction for restoring root of my device. Thanks so much in advance.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/development/root-cf-autoroot-twrp-t800-t3079488
Thanks I have re-rooted my device.
Factory reset doesn't remove root anyway, so the device was still rooted when you sent it back.
Thanks everyone
Now that I am rooted again, I keep getting a popup about what I believe is a firmware update. I know if I install it I will more than likely lose root. Is it possible for me to get this update and retain root? If so, how can this be accomplished?
Thanks so much in advance.

My personal opinion is to just do the update and then reroot. To me; it's just a cleaner method and I prefer cleanliness when it comes to updating, rooting, and such.

Agreed, it's a triviality to re-root.
The update won't install anyway with root already installed.
Yea, forgot about updates not working when rooted. Just use Kies or Smart Switch to update and return to stock.
Sent from my SM-T700 using Tapatalk
I see that it is recommended to use Kies or Smart Switch. I have Kies on my windows computer, and it did tell me that there is an update available for my Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5. The update is ~ 1.6GB, while on the tablet itself it says the update is ~ 400MB. That's a huge difference in size. Any reasons why?
Also, it tells me the update can fail if the device is rooted- in which case my device is indeed rooted. Should I be concerned? Or should I use some other application to update the firmware on my device?
Thanks in advance.

The difference in size, I imagine, probably has to do with OTA updates only adding in the differences between the current version and the update version. I know Kies and Smart Switch completely overwrites EVERYTHING and does a 100% fresh install of every single file in the software. Make sense?
No need to worry about the OTA update failing during install since you can't do OTA updates when rooted. I recommend getting rid of Kies and installing Smart Switch. Smart Switch is faster and easier on your PC resources than Kies.

I've downloaded/installed Smart Switch. Right now it is backing up my device. Just to make certain I am understanding things correctly, I run the update using Smart Switch, and then after it finishes, providing it finishes successfully, I would then proceed to re-root my device again using the method from the other thread?
Thx

It has finished downloading and my tablet has rebooted to what appears to be download mode. On the screen of the tablet it says, "Downloading... Do not turn off target!!"
On my computer screen it appears that the computer is installing drivers. Also I just got a popup on my computer screen as well that says, "Failed to recognize software update mode...." - I think this is because my computer is trying to install the 2nd driver.

Yea, drivers being reinstalled might cause an issue. It may not finish doing the update. But; no worries. There's an emergency recovery process that will fix it. Give it a chance to finish on its own though.

I had already started the process again. I did get tablet out of download mode per the screen instructions. The update failed and would not continue. So now its telling me, "Downloading files for the GALAXY Tab S software update... Please do not unplug the cable connected to the PC."
So now it is downloading again, and is at 85%.

At least it should be fine now that the drivers are installed.
It has moved forward this time, and is saying, "Software update for GALAXY Tab S is in progress... Please do not unplug the cable connected to the PC."
Tablet is in download mode and no complaints about drivers.
Smart Switch is now saying, "Software update for GALAXY Tab S is complete. The device will now restart. Disconnect and reconnect the cable."
So, I have disconnected and reconnected the USB cable. The device is booting up, and on the screen of the device, it is saying "Android is upgrading... Optimizing app ___ of 225."
