so confused - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I am sorry if I sound like a noob, but I am. Thank you in advance for all your help
So i was able to root my ATT G3 using Skunk Apes easy root guide. I was then able to download Busy Box, ROM Manager, Titanium Backup, and Superuser based on a thread by the Hulk. I have backed up all my apps and I am not sure where to go at this point. I want to be able to clean out the bloatware and open up the tethering to make my phone a free mobile hot spot, so I can use my Asus TF300 outside the house.

If you have installed Titanium Backup, there is options in there to freeze or remove Bloatware. In Titanium Backup, select the "Backup" Tab. Find which bloatware you wish to remove and select it. You will then have options to "Freeze" or "Uninstall".
You can use this app for tethering over WiFi: WiFi Tether for Root Users from the Google Playstore
Alternatively you can also flash a custom ROM. =)
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!

It's possible the Wifi app I told you about is incompatible with your device. There is a native work around that might be good for you, but you would have to have a custom recovery. The directions are below if, and only if, you have a custom recovery such as Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP) or Clockwork Mod (CWM).
Also, you can download the following app for "freezing" your bloatware. Freezing is essentially a reversible way to remove bloatware from your phone. This allows you to undo something if you freeze something you need later. App Quarantine ROOT/FREEZE
Now for the tethering: You can download this: Click on the link under the OP's post labeled "Download Below"
Once you have the zip file, place it in the root of your Internal Storage on your phone via USB MTP. Boot your phone into Recovery Mode and select "Install from ZIP" choose the zip file you just placed in your internal storage. (Should be: /sdcard/name_of_file.zip). Once you have finished that reboot your phone and use the "App Quarantine ROOT/FREEZE" app I previously mentioned to freeze the "Tethering Provision" app. Once you have done that you should have native tethering capabilities through your settings menu as if you had paid for it.
=== If you do not have a custom recovery ===
You only have two options....
1.) Install a custom recovery. I recommend TWRP, but that is just my preference.
2.) Go to the Google Play Store and search for "Root Tether" and sort through each of the apps that come up and try to find one that may work for your device. (I would read the reviews.)
=== ALSO ===
You can also just download a custom ROM like CM10.0.0 and it automatically removes the bloatware and gives you a more pure-like android experience. CM10.0.0 also enables native tethering automatically.
If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask. =)
EDIT >> I found the following site that may help you in determining which apps are safe to freeze. http://www.s3forums.com/forum/galaxy-s3-apps/434-bloatware-applications-safe-remove-root-required.html

Well ROMs come in many different flavors. It depends on what you like. If you like a pure android experience (with some extras and mods) similar to the Google Nexus devices, I would recommend CM10.0.0-Stable (for a daily use ROM).
CM (CyanogenMod) has more up to date versions, but are very buggy and not recommended for daily use until the bugs get ironed out. The CM10.0.0 is a 4.1.2 based ROM and the more updated version CM10.1 is a 4.2.1 based ROM which is the buggy ROM I mentioned.
If CM doesn't sound like your thing you can view these forums to see other ROMs:
| Android Development
| Original Android Development
If you DO like the sound of CM, you can follow my below steps:
==== WARNING ====
I am not responsible for anything that could happen to your device in the event that your device is bricked or no longer usable. I also advise that you read all stickies on the forum before moving forward with the below steps. These steps are specifically detailed for the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3 i747 (d2att) phone. If you do not have this phone, disregard the following information:
==== END OF WARNING ====
To install TWRP (which is what I prefer) follow these steps:
1.) Download Goo Manager
2.) Open Goo Manager and grant super user rights.
3.) Press your "Menu" button and select "Install OpenRecoveryScript"
4.) Possibly grant super user rights again and repeat step 3.
5.) Confirm you are sure you wish to install TWRP
6.) Confirm yet again you are sure you wish to install --AND-- make sure the file is: openrecovery-twrp-2.3.3.1-d2att.img
7.) Sit back and wait. Goo Manager will take you to the Goo website and download the .img. It will then reboot your phone and install the image. You can follow the status of the download in your drop down task bar where it is downloading.
Once the image is installed you can confirm by booting into recovery mode by shutting down your phone, then with the phone off press and hold Volume Up, then Home Button and then Power button simultaneously. Once the phone vibrates you can release those keys and you should be presented with a blue screen with the "Team Win" logo.
You can then click "Reboot" then "System" from within the recovery. Your phone will boot up into the system. Download these files if you wish for CyanogenMod CM10.0.0 Stable:
CM10.0.0 ROM: http://get.cm/?device=d2att&type=stable
Google Apps: http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip
Once you have downloaded both of those files, move them to the root of your Internal Storage on your phone.
Reboot into recovery as explained above and follow these directions:
1.) Select "Wipe" then select "Cache" and Swipe to Wipe.
2.) Then repeat with the option "Dalvik Cache" and "Factory Reset".
3.) Once you have fully wiped the device select "Install" and then select "cm-10.0.0-d2att.zip"
4.) You will then get a confirmation, select "Add More Zips" and select "gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip"
5.) You will then get another confirmation. Then "Swipe to Confirm Flash" and it will go through the process.
6.) At the end it should say Successful and "Reboot" Select "Reboot" to boot into the new system.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask =)

That is correct. however since he is still stock he may not have made any backups. Once you flash TWRP you can make a backup, and I would recommend doing so.
TWRP 2.3.3.1 is compatible with the upcoming 4.2.1 JB folder structure and has a touch UI that blows CWM's touch UI out of the park. You can also flash up to 10 zips without having to go back and do it manually each time.. Its much more automated.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but you will never be comfortable doing things like flashing ROMs until you just take the time and read, watch videos, etc. I personally like Clockwork for recovery but to each their own, as previously mentioned. It'll take a while at first, but in no time you'll have it down.
Lots of tutorial videos and a great place to start: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728824&highlight=heimdall
Props to appdroid for the videos btw

You can also switch between ClockworkMod & TWRP to use an old nandroid in a pinch, so you may want to save them for a rainy day disaster or walk down 'memory' lane :clever:
Edit: Just be sure to label them, at least with what version of android & what ROM

[Q] Noob Q on Rooted EPIC Phone (Sry in Advance)

Again my apologizes in advance for these questions but I am struggling to sort through all of the threads & determine the best course of action.
I went through this one step root process for my Samsung Epic: SDX-Deverlopers forms. Can't post link due to noobieness. If you good to their website the thread is titled "Author Topic: One click root for the Epic 4G! v2.3.0 Now has Superuser.apk!" first post dated August 31, 2010, 11:23:06 AM.
Now that this has been complete I am trying to do a couple of things.
- First I want to move apps to my sdcard. Since I am on version 2.1 this does not seem to work. Is there a work around on this?
In doing some reading it seems that one of the main suggestions to do once you root your phone is to create a backup so that you can try other mods while not losing everything. The app Rom Manager is suggested however I am uncertain if this is the preferred method for EPIC.
What can I do with the Superuser app?
Since I am the ultimate noob here if anyone would like to provide suggestions on roms & other things that they have done with their rooted EPIC that they have found to work well & be worth while I would greatly appreciate the feedback.
Again my apologizes for being such a noob however I will with your help pick up on this relatively quickly. Thanks!

Firstly, thanks for posting in the right section...
The one click root has been updated many times since th one you've downloaded, the latest version is 2.5.5, and includes flashing clockworkmod, which you can boot into to perform backups ad restores, as well as flash custom ROMs to the phone.
Superuser.apk is an app whose sole purpose is to ask your permission for a root privileged app to run. It is a safety precaution so that rogue apps don't use root privileges without your knowledge.
There are many ROMs to choose from, but the major decision for you is whether or not to run Froyo, which is still beta and unofficial. If you wish to run Froyo, you'll need to use the Windows program Odin in combination with a DK28 tar that updates the phone to Froyo.
Whether or not you stick with Android 2.1 (Eclair) or 2.2 (Froyo) is up to you, there are good ROMs for both versions. Before making any changes, it is always a good idea to backup any important data, as a lot of ROMs will require a data wipe to function correctly.
I would highly recommend reading the xda Epic wiki, and you'll find a lot of info and links there.
Good luck, and welcome to the community.

Drockstar had some good info.
To answer a few questions:
2.1 can not install app to SD. You need 2.2
Yes, 2.3 is an old cwm. 2.5 is in the epic wiki. Gves you root and cwm 2.5. You need to Odin to stock dk28, then use one click root in order to install custom roms tha run on froyo.
You should backup in cwm before using odin. So that you can save your apps and data. Once you odin and root, you can go int advanced restore to get your apps back with their settings. I use titanium backup along with cwm for backing up. Works great for me. Like Drockstar said, the wiki has everything you need. Just follow the instructions step by step. Also, randy shear has a ton of youtube vids giving how-tos and demos. You might want to check out his vids.

Ok - thx! In order to update to the most current one click as shown on this forum under the article title: One Click Root & Recovery for the Epic 4G! v2.5.5 Now has ClockworkMod Redirector!
Would I need to uninstall the old version of the one click root that I have or should I just install as I did with that one for v2.5.5?
Thanks again!
You need to Odin to stock, then use the one click. Again, backup in cwm before you odin to stock so you don't lose your apps and settings

When you say backup in cwm what program is that referring to. Do you mean ClockworkMod Launcher? I have ROM Manager & Titanium backup. Once I ODIN how would I restore? Thx!
I'm referring to backing up via cwm. You should restore only after you have the setup you want. If you are flashing a rom, restore after you have flashed the rom

Everyone I am struggling on this. When I shutdown then after shutdown hold down on start, down vol & camera buttons I get the recovery mode however I only have four options as follows:
- reboot system now
- apply sdcard:update.zip
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
What am I doing wrong as I need to find the backup option. Also what would the update.zip be?
Very frustrating...I just need to get this old root out & then it will be smooth sailing. Thx again everyone!
You're not rooted, that is the default recovery not clockworkmod
Cwm = clockwork recovery mod
Open rom manager and see if you have option to flash recovery at the top. Once you do that you should be able to get into cwm recovery.
To the guy above, just cause you don't have cwm doesn't mean your not rooted

If your phone is rooted and you've downloaded rom manager and flashed cwm recovery then shut your phone off. Then hold the power button + camera button + volume down. This will take you to the cwm recovery. I kept getting the normal blue recovery until I read that I had to shut my phone off and hold those three buttons. Even under cwm when I pressed reboot into recovery I went to the normal blue one. You need to press those three to get to the cwm recovery.

If anyone could provide a link to a stand alone clockwork (& believes that is the best course of action) pls send it to me as a pm if it will not allow you to post on the forum.
Again I am sorry for clogging the board up with this however I am stuck. Once I get the clockworkmod setup & then ODIN I will be on my way. Thanks again!

Thank you for the suggestion. I have tried this & it takes me to the blue backup screen as you mention. I need help finding a stand alone download for clockworkmod to try to fix my mess up.
You could put the 1-click root w/ cwm on top of the root you already have. I remember reading that it can royally screw your phone though. Its hit or miss. I personally wouldn't do it.
If you don't care too much about losing settings and saves (like game progress or settings on an app), you may just want to flash odin, do the one-click root w/ cwm and flash a rom.
I have found that backup apps like titanium and my backup are a little spotty with their data restoration capabilities. Nandroid, which is the backup/restore used in cwm is the best.
You could try to backup using my backup before you flash odin. No promises that you will be able to restore all of your data (apps, game progress and settings) with my backup though.
The reboot to recovery option doesn't work on 2.1, you have to power off and use vol down, camera, power. Now that you installed recovery from rom manager it should work.
Edit, to be clear, if you select reboot recover on 2.1 it goes to samsung recovery. If you power off and then hold the 3 buttons you'll get cwm recovery since you flashed it in rom manager.

The reboot to recovery option doesn't work on 2.1, you have to power off and use vol down, camera, power. Now that you installed recovery from rom manager it should work.

Unfortunately even after flashing cwm & then restart (after shutdown) with the power, down vol & camera button I am still getting the blue recovery screen. Perhaps applying the update.zip would give me the cwm? Would anyone suggest applying update.zip?
If this doesn't work I will just ODIN & set every back up again so as not to waste more of everyones time on here. Again many thanks to everyone for pointing me in the right direction.
I'd try running the 2.5.5 root first, if it works great, if not you'll have to odin but you were gonna do that anyway.
You might want to install odin and the samsung drivers and verify it can see your phone before anything has the chance to go wrong, that way you know you are ready to fix any problem that might come up.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
One more question... In regards to doing ODIN do I need to have anything special selected i.e. enable USB debugging or checking Unknown sources (allow install of non-market applications)?
Are there any other things I need to think about or setup aside from the phones drivers prior to ODIN?

[Q] Flashing Jedi X6.1.2

I have been reading all day... I'm wanting to flash the Jedi X6.1.2 ROM. I'm still not sure what I need to do exactly. Do I download all of those files to my phone and do everything from there or is part of this process done on the PC? I was reading in a separate part of the forum about having to download Odin (I believe) and using it to flash the ROM? Also, I use AT&T, I'm assuming that's the carrier files I need but I don't see them on the Jedi ROM page. Does this mean I can't flash that ROM with my carrier? When it says desired modem, does that mean that's optional or I need to pick one? And do I have to do that at the time of flashing the ROM or can I do that at a later time? What is nandroid and what do I use it for? Next, what is the factory data reset and how do I perform it? I've downloaded CWM (ROM Manager), is this the right app and do I use that app to wipe the system? How do I actually flash the system? How do I wipe the cache and what is dalvik? What permissions need to be fixed and how do you do that? How do I flash the carrier files, modem and add-ons? Do I need to do that at the time of flashing the ROM or can it be done later?*
This is my first attempt at flashing and have no idea what I'm doing, even after days of trying to figure it out. I have a gazillion questions... This forum is amazing and everyone is super helpful, but it's not really newb friendly. I think it would be nice if there were some kind of general flashing guide or maybe a general FAQ (I looked and couldn't find any). I didn't find the search function of the forums too helpful. It seemed that the results weren't even anything close to what I was looking for. Anyway, thanks for any help in advance and sorry about all the questions.

You really need to read some more. Start with this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987541 , there are a few how too's there and a newbie guide to terms. For now you only need to used odin to install a recovery (CWM) or clock work mod. This is what you use to make a backup (nandroid) of your system. Then following the instructions on the rom of your choice, use CWM to install or flash the rom. Do some more searching on how to install roms and what bricking your phone means. Not trying to scare you, it's not that hard, you just need to understand what you are doing. Read some more then ask a few questions that you don't understand.
Suggest you do as Kebran suggested and read some more.
To add/expand upon what he did explain:
Odin is only needed to flash root and recovery.
All backups, factory restores, wiping caches , fixing permissions and flashing roms will be done through cwm.

How to install a rom on the galaxy note 2 made easy
Steps are:
1) root.
2) install clockworkmod mod via odin.
Fortunately both steps can be done together here in one easy step.
http://galaxynote2root.com/galaxy-note-2-root/how-to-root-galaxy-note-2-easiest-method/
3) Once you have clockworkmod installed, you will have to visit the jedi thread on your phone and download the jedi rom onto your phone.
4) once the rom is downloaded onto your phone, shut your phone down and boot into clockworkmod by pressing volume up, home button and power buttons all together.
5) once in clockwork mod you will use the volume up/down buttons to navigate and then the power button to make the selections "install zip from sd card" and then "choose zip from sdcard"
6) Clockworkmod will then give you a list of all the files on your phone, and you will have to select them accordingly to find where you downloaded the jedi rom to and once you find it, you of course will make the selection to install it. Don't forget to use clockworkmod to "wipe cache" and in "advanced" to "wipe dalvic" in the order that is stated in the first post of the jedi thread under "instructions". This is important. Don't do things out of order.
If you go to the bottom of page 141 in the Jedi thread, you will find a long post that takes the instructions from the first post to flash the rom and writes them out in greater detail to make it easier to understand. Follow those in order and you should be fine. Also, so you can see it in person so to speak, try a search like "flash rom clockworkmod" on youtube and watch someone do it. If you can find it for your phone even better. It makes it a little more comfortable to do it when you've seen someone else do it first.
You do not need to worry about flashing carrier files with your phone because the Jedi rom is built around at&t already and includes them in the original download.
Some of your questions answered:
When it says desired modem, does that mean that's optional or I need to pick one? You don't need to worry about modem at all with your at&t phone. skip it.
What is nandroid and what do I use it for? Nandroid is a snapshot of your phone. When you boot into clockwork mod, you will see the option to "backup" your phone. You do this so if something goes wrong while you are flashing the Jedi rom, you will be able to go into clockwork mod and reset your phone with the backup you just made. That is called nandroid.
Next, what is the factory data reset and how do I perform it? Factory data reset is an option you will see once you boot into clockworkmod. Just select it using the volume up/down buttons and it will wipe all user data from your phone and put it back to the way it was out of the box. Once the process is finished however, you will still be in clockworkmod and can proceed to the next steps to flash the rom.
I've downloaded CWM (ROM Manager), is this the right app and do I use that app to wipe the system? Once you have installed clockworkmod on your phone using odin, you won't need to use the Rom manager app. just stick to booting into clockworkmod and performing tasks there. Later when you're more comfortable with the process you can play with rom manager.
How do I actually flash the system? Flashing will happen whenever you choose to have clockworkmod install a rom or addons or whatever.
How do I wipe the cache and what is dalvik? Both are optional actions you can perform in clockworkmod simply by selecting them. Wipe Dalvik can be found under the "advanced" settings. These need to be performed to help ensure that the rom you choose is installed correctly.
What permissions need to be fixed and how do you do that? Fix permissions is simply an option to choose once booted into clockworkmod. It literally only takes a few seconds.
How do I flash the carrier files, modem and add-ons? You can download the add ons to your phone after you flash the rom, boot into clockworkmod and follow the process of "select zip from sd card to install" don't forget to follow the apprpriate steps to wipe cache and dalvic, etc when you flash add ons.
Read twice, flash once.
Best of luck!

This helped out immensely. I had been reading page after page after page trying to figure out what each step was in more detail. This definitely pointed me in the right direction. As of now I've got my phone successfully rooted, now all I need is to do more research to actually flash the new ROM. I'm currently trying to back up my apps using App2Zip from Google Play. Do I need to back up just my downloaded apps or system apps as well? Do the necessary system apps come with the ROM or are none of them essential? Again, thanks for the help.
Why not use titanium backup. If you open that app, in the top right theres a batch option. On click to back up all appas and data

Does this also back up the bloatware or will this backup everything else so when I flash my ROM the bloatware will be gone?

Titanium backup has long been considered the gold standard to back up your apps. It will almost literally let you back up any and all apps, user or system apps, in every configuration imaginable. It will also give you the option to "freeze" your apps if you dont want to completely delete them. Even the bloatware. Delete it, freeze it, make a back up, restore it, its all there.
When you flash your rom, it will come with whatever the cook has baked into the rom. Usually, they will have all the bloatware removed. In the case of the Jedi rom, there is a link in the first post where the author lets you download any of the missing apps you want onto your phone, which you can then install (flash) using clockworkmod.
For what its worth, you make a backup of your system apps just to be on the safe side, but I've never had to use the backups of my system apps. If you ever get to the point where your system apps are messed up, it's likely you will be using the nandroid backup you made in clockworkmod to restore the phone back to where it was anyway.
PS, congratulations on rooting! did you use the method in the link I gave so that you also have clockworkmod installed as well?

So if im hearing right... Backup everything in titanium just in case. Flash the ROM. Then flash any addons I want and I wont have to worry about picking and choosing system apps. Any necessary system apos should be included in the Jedi ROM?

Correct. Back up everthing in titanium, and you will also make a nandroid backup right before flashing the rom so you should be all set with back-ups. After you flash the rom, everything you will need to operate the phone will be there, along with a few extra fun things that the authors like to throw in and are usually fun to play with. After you flash the rom, the only things you will have to do are change any settings you want and install any apps you want from the market or the "goody bag" in the first post of the jedi thread, or your titanium backup, or wherever. The phone for all intensive purposes, will operate just like it did when you got it new, except better and with more features. The multi window is actually quite nice. :good:
Also when you restore your app apps from titanium do not restore the data. Only restore the app. Sometimes the data will mess up the rom.

Congratulations! Welcome to your new addiction. You can now use pretty much the same method to try out all kinds of roms. By the way, just in case you haven't already found the information elsewhere, in order to use multi window, hold the "back" button down for a couple of seconds. There is now an app named "Multi Window Control" in your apps that you can use to put whatever app your heart desires into the multi window function. After you choose the apps you want to add, open multi window, hit the "edit" button at the bottom and drag your selected apps into the multi window bar. :good:

Already haveset that up. One of the most awesome things I've seen! You can customize so much. I never knew you could do this until recently. It's freaking awesome! Will take me awhile to get this set up the way I want. But totally worth it. I just need to go back and flash the addons and then I should be set.Woot!!!
Flashing Kernel
I have a new problem with this ROM... I just upgraded my old 2gb micro sd to a 64gb SanDisk microsdxc. I read in the op of the Jedi thread that I need to flash a new kernel in order for it to work. I was looking at the time Perseus kernel since itsseemed to be pretty popular. I did some digging, and went back to the first link in the thread, went to the Perseus link in that thread, and I believe I have the zip I need (Perseus for i317). The problem I'm running into is that I can't find any instructions on flashing it. I found instructions usinga bbootloader, but that was for a completely different phone. Can anyone please point me in the right direction again? If I'm not mistaken, which I definitely could be, I should be able to flash the kernel in CWM? Any help is greatly appreciated.

[Q] Custom Rom Help

Hi all,
First of all what a great community with so much helpful information. I am new to android, just moved from 4 years of iphone. I have rooted my galaxy s 3 using the helpful guides on this site. I was wondering if someone could point me to a helpful guide on custom roms. From my understanding, all I have to do is go to the play store and download rom manager and then install clockwork mod and from there I can start using custom roms. Thanks a ton.

You dont have CWM yet? If you want you can just download Goomanager from playstore and install TWRP from there. That will give you recovery.
Then you can start playing with your ROMS.
If you want to use Goomanager just install it
open it
once it opens hit the menu button and select Install OpenRecoverScript.
Take a look here. Lots of info and even talks about TWRP and recovery

I have never used ROM manager. CWM and TWRP do the same thing. They are both recoveries that you can use to back up your ROMs and flash ROMs. I haven't used CWM in awhile as I prefer TWRP. Again they do the same thing but TWRP is a touch recovery. Little easier to use. Once you install either one you just download what ever ROM you want. I store the ROMs on my external SD card. Then you just boot into your recovery and flash the ROM you just downloaded.

I have a quick question about goo manager, I am try to point to my sdcard as the download location and it says that all the paths that I try are not valid. I have tried /storage/extsdcard/apps/goomanager but that wont work. Im not sure what the issue is.

RomManager and GooManager, and ClockWorkMod and TWRP are different kind of softwares.
CWM and TWRP are recoveries, as Jasvncnt1 said above. They are used to flash ROMs into the phone or flashable packages into a custom ROM, backup a ROM, restore a ROM, and some kind of other maintenance (fix permissions, factory reset, format SD card...). They basically are the engine used to customize your phone.
RomManager and GooManager are apps. They basically are front-ends to recoveries usable right from your ROM. (For example, if you flash a ROM from GooManager or RomManager, the app simply reboots the phone into your actual recovery and asks the recovery to proceed with flashing the specified package. Same goes for fix permissions, resets, etc. if they are available in the app.)
These apps also extend recoveries capabilities by offering some other useful functions like dowloading ROM zips from repositories, downloading Gapps packages, checking for available ROM updates...
Some people may find apps like GooManager and RomManager useful, but basically everything available in these apps can be achieved manually right from the recovery.

I believe the download path is case sensitive. extsdcard is a different location than extSdCard. Moreover, the download folder must already exist before you configure it as the prefered download folder in GooManager. So check the following:
1) that you have a /storage/extSdCard/apps/goomanager folder in your external SD card. If not, create it;
2) that you type exactly /storage/extSdCard/apps/goomanager, with the uppercase letters at the right place.

Am I the only one with these bugs?

Hi,
I'm new here so please go easy on this "noob"
It was my first to unlock and root my phone, followed by flashing a stock ROM (Which is exactly why I rooted it)
I flashed this JB 4.2.2 stock build [ROM] [OTA][GSM] Android 4.2.2 JDQ39: Rooted | Galaxy Nexus > XDA for my Galaxy Nexus
Now...
I can't disable Next-word suggestions in the Language & Input -> Google Keyboard Settings
Also, I noticed a few seconds of lag when pressing the power button to unlock the phone, when viewing recent apps (via the soft-key), and when opening the Camera too
Also, when I choose the "Recent Apps" soft key.. it's as the app that's currently being used is minimised and the homescreen is shown without any icons
The Build came with Busybox pre-installed and now its gone after a day of using my phone... I literally can't find it.
I searched in the play store "BusyBox" and the result is 3 different apps with the same name!
Any Advice?

go back to recovery, format/wipe /system partition, reflash rom.
For your reference, a good app to install bb is stephen (stericsson)'s busybox installer (play store link). Obviously, it needs root.
Next time, read the stickies.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812959
How do I get “root”?
If you are booted into a custom recovery (recoveries will be covered later), root is enabled by default. If you want root while booted into Android, you will need to place two files on your system partition: an “su” binary which grants root access, and a superuser app that manages that access. The two that are available are ChainsDD’s Superuser and Chainfire’s SuperSU. Usually these files are packaged up in a zip file that is flashable using a custom recovery, but they can be flashed manually using ADB. Both of these methods will be described below.

As you probably noticed by now, you didn't need to flash a full "custom stock ROM" to root.

For your reference, a good app to install bb is stephen (stericsson)'s busybox installer (play store link). Obviously, it needs root.
Next time, read the stickies.

I'm totally new to this rooting &/ flashing thing, so please go easy
So, what you're saying is that I should boot into fastboot mode, wipe system partition (this will format the whole SD card right?), install the same ROM again?
I guess I'll need to install Titanium Backup to backup my apps and settings, I'll have to search for an article for the best way to do it as well..
Can I do it like this:
Open "Rom Manager", Select "Install ROM from SD Card", install it.. ???
PS: Do you have a recommendation for a better ROM, perhaps my choice of ROM wasn't correct...

You can wipe the system partition in a custom recovery (dont know if you can with stock). And yes you could flash via ROM manager but I wouldnt recommend it. I am on XenonHD 11.1 and loving it. But roms are a personal choice so there is no 'best' ROM. Just try out.

The tutorial I followed didn't mention using the ROM manager, but I had not choice.. becuase whenever I went into fastboot mode manually, it got stuck on the screen displaying Google (I waited for minutes without any luck)
How would you recommend CyanogenMod 10.1.2 against the stock 4.2.2 which I have currently?
I read these threads as well whereby they said that there is no "real" solution to the issues:

Mr., please, read the LINK i gave you! THIS ONE ->>>> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812959
If you read it, you'll stop thinking you need to be doing anything at this point in FASTBOOT interface! Like mrgnex says, you need to be on a custom recovery to format /system. (Have you read the link yet? By now you should know that the /system partition and the /sdcard/ (aka userdata) are 2 different things!)

Stop! THERE'S NO NEED FOR FASTBOOT HERE!
Thanks Guys for replying.
Yes, I read the info in the link, it was very helpful.
I'm still confused though.. "Fast boot" and "Recovery" are they the same thing?
I tried a "fix" mentioned by someone about using a live wallpaper such as "Water", I tried it and it's been 1/2 hour and it's really smooth compared to before...
Yes, I do have a custom recovery, actually I don't know why, but It seems I've got two according to ROM Manager.
It says I've got Clockwork Mod Recovery & TWRP.
I also tried going into recovery (Volume up + Down + Power) and it worked this time, when I select recovery, it goes into CWRM
I also did a bit of research about CyanogenMod 10.1.2 and from what I could gather it's liked by people a lot.
I'm guessing that definitely some time ahead it'll get all "laggy" again, Is there any reason according to you why I shouldn't install it compared to the stock 4.2.2 I have?

So to get things clear:
No fastboot and recovery arent the same thing.
Vol up+down+power brings you into fast boot and not recovery.
Apparently you dont have 2 custom recoverys since you booted into cwm.
Cm10 is great. But there are many great roms out there. You can start off with cm and then (if you please) look further.
I dont see any reason to not install cm10.1.2 since a whole team built and optimized it. So basically it is a better stock.
When you think your phone is slow you should look into the custom kernels. Thats a different story which I will not begin before you want to

Thanks! Now it's definitely clear!
I'll download CM10.1.2 tomorrow and will decide to install it once Stock JB 4.2.2 starts acting up again.
In the meantime I'll read on about kernels, please keep don't close this thread...yet.

I've decided that I will test out the Rom that I have currently (4.2.2) for a few weeks, and then flash CM.
I wanted to know one more thing, Is it bad to flash ROMs to your phone every now and then?
Because I've seen people flashing different ROMs on their phone, I don't wanna damage my phone as I want it to last as long as I can make it.
(by "Bad" I mean... does it reduce the phone's life or it's hardware's life span)

No it can't. I was a flashaholic (until I discovered XenonHD) and my phone didn't got worse. Only overclocking the CPU and gpu can affect the life of the CPU or gpu (or both XD). Just do a fresh install everytime and read the post of the ROM of your choice to see what to do to get it working optimally. If you have any problems just ask.

I'll flash CM in a week or two, as I'm on a tight schedule currently, and I also wanna note down the average battery time I get out of 4.2.2
So... since 4.3 is now out, I was thinking it'd be better for me to flash it other than anything else.
I'll most probably download the stock rom from:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#yakjujwr66v
So far I came across this thread having the steps to flash 4.3
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2377307
But I wanna flash it and lose my data, so that it's as fresh as it can be...
Will that work if I use "wugfresh root toolkit"?

With the stock package there is no need for a toolkit.
Hell, there's no reason for a toolkit any time.

What was I thinking...
I apologize guys... I guess I wasn't thinking straight as its past midnight here...
So just to clarify stuff so that I don't end up doing something wrong:
-> Head into Recovery Mode (with usb debugging enabled... connect usb cable to phone and pc)
-> Wipe System
-> Wipe Cache
-> Install from SD card (select .zip file)
right?
Also, I performed a backup of the applications I have via Titanium Backup, They'll work on 4.3 when I restore them right? or do you recommend downloading them from the play store again?
Sorry for being such a noob, and Thanks for your responses!
backup everything from your /sdcard to your computer, titanium backups and a nandroid
the google stock package is NOT flashable in CWM/TWRP
if you follow the GOOGLE instructions it WILL wipe your device (remember that backup you made of everything?)
alternatively you can make sure and have adb/fastboot working on your computer properly, extract all the files out of the zip (including the tar.gz located inside), and in recovery, do a factory reset, then boot to fastboot, fastboot flash system and boot ....
as for Titanium Backup, there is a work around to get it working on 4.3, but root is lacking full power.

I'm full of excitement atm :victory:
I took a backup of my apps using titanium backup, I installed it but can't use it, it says I need root (which I already had before).
I read online somewhere that I need to root again, but I don't wanna lose all my data/ apps I installed again...
Any ideas?
If I use Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit... will I lose my data?

[Q] Question new 4.3 update to Note 2

I use to be with Sprint and have the Note 2 (Android 4.1.2) flashed.
I see now that the phone is asking me to apply the new 4.3 update BUT since it's been flashed to work with Cricket well I am having doubts
of doing it and pay for the re-flash again or not at all.
I really would like to upgrade but having to pay each time I get an upgrade is ridiculous so I am wondering if I can do a full flash OR root
myself.
I downloaded the Galaxy Note Toolkit 4.10 I believe a few hour ago and I am wondering if this is the right tool to upgrade and root my Samsung note 2???
If not, where can I find instructions (easy ones, even if I have to pay just a couple of bucks) but that would make the upgrade/root very easy.
I hope someone here can guide me what to do or where to go for such a task of doing my own upgrades and roots and backups and so on
Thanks in advance !!!
I am also on cricket with my note 2 but I did the flashing myself.
Couple questions for you.
1. Are you stock?
2. Rooted?
3. Custom recovery?
Now my experience. I got mine off ebay and did everything myself. While flashing custom roms I ran into the problem of losing my flashed info every time I flashed any rom. This turned out to be an issue with the baseband/radio I was using. Once I got the proper one on it was not an issue again. I have flashed everything available for the note 2. Nothing has made me lose my cricket service since the baseband/radio fix.

I did a root but it was a long time ago and frankly I don't remember a thing about it, I am trying to refresh my memory by readung more about rooting. To answer your questions 2,3 is no. On number 1, frankly don't know what you are talking about
I just took mine when I was with Sprint and to a store and they did a (partial I think) flash on it.
I get errors on username/password when connecting to cricket but that's about it.
Right now it's working with cricket and has android 4.1.2 but I want to upgrade to 4.3 and would like to learn(again) to do it myself.
I just need directions on how and if it's possible to do a full flash and root on this phone.
Thanks again
Well I can give you a hand in doing it all. I am at work today but am off tomorrow and will dig up everything you are going to need and put it in a zip on my file host. Then when we are both abke to get together online I will walk you through everything.
Will even help you get data going (although I have not made 3g work only 1x)

The zip should not be unzipped. You place it on your sdcard boot into a stock recovery with stock ROM and choose flash upgrade zip from external sdcard. Although this is not a preferred method the following paragraphs give better options.
Best thing if you want stock rooted 4.3 is to follow lorjays thread. If you want note 3 features use synergy rc3 from his forum. You will not have the Knox boot loader or files (which is a plus) with either. Just read the op of the one you choose and follow the directions exactly. Now 4.3 has its issues (mostly MMS and WiFi which has an Odin flashable fix) and note 3 features kills a couple of things adding contacts (flashable fix for that) and updating profile/prl does not work.
If you have other questions ask here, use Google search, or read both threads start to finish. Everything is covered by those 3 methods.

Sounds great, I have another question:
I found the following 4.3 update : MK4 4.3 Full Flashable Zip
Which is the android 4.3 upgrade software, if not let me know. Anyway, I would like to use that one and if there is a better one let me know and if you have a link to it, better.
I understand that I need to place that zip file in the phone memory, then use the Samsung Skipsoft toolkit to root it and install such 4.3 software???
Let me know if I am thinking right on this...
Then that's it. I will have a fullly rooted cricket phone with andoird 4.3
Am I in the right direction?
Thanks

First off go into setting, about phone and give me your baseband/radio info. Depending on what this shows we might have to do a few other things.
Below are the steps to get custom recovery, backup current rom, and install tw 4.3. Although I want you to do some other things first just in case you lose your cricket flash. So read over the steps below and if you feel comfortable doing those then I will PM you with a couple of links to software and steps to make sure you have the needed info to reflash in case you lose your cricket info.
Okay I got the files and links you need.
1. Hope you have the drivers but if not these work on windows7 64bit (if you are using other windows version let me know and I will see what I can find) http://d-h.st/77G
2. CF-Auto root Which contains the Odin version I use. Just extract the files and then place the wifi patch in the same directory. If you need help using odin just ask. http://d-h.st/Twx
3. Wifi patch. You will flash this using Odin (put phone in download mode to use odin, power off then press vol-, menu key, and power at the same time) http://d-h.st/eo8
4. Custom recovery (philz modified cwm recovery) This will flash, backup, and restore every rom available for the note 2 without any issues
http://d-h.st/users/philz_touch/?fld_id=29060#files This is the download site choose philz_touch_6.01.2-l900.tar.md5
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2552653 this is the xda thread for his recovery
Now that you have the base tools time to go through the steps of upgrading. First you want to have 2-10 gigs free on your sdcard (if not backup your sdcard to your pc and then delete till you have 10 gigs free, this is needed to backup all your internal sdcard data)
1. Pick the Touchwiz rom you want. Plain stock 4.3 which you have the choice of odex pure stock or deodex (only known issue is mms, use any 3rd party mms handcent, gosms, hangouts, etc..) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541395 or 4.3 with note 3 features (again has mms issues) http://the-plattypus.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1&p=1#p1 r3 is the version you want to download.
2. Place the rom you want on your external sdcard (sdext)
3. Power off phone and then enter download mode (press and hold in this order vol-, menu, then power) it will take you to a warning screen press vol+ and continue
4. On PC extract the cf-auto root zip. Place philz_touch_6.01.2-l900.tar.md5 file inside that folder along with the wifi fix file. Now run the Odin3-v1.85.exe
5. Click on the button that is labled PDA then select the philz_touch_6.01.2-l900.tar.md5
6. Connect your phone to your PC and you should see a com port listed in the odin app
7. Click start and it will flash the recovery and reboot your phone.
8. It should reboot into the recovery app if not power off the phone and the press and hold vol+, home, and power. It will boot into recovery.
9. Now you want to backup your phone. Choose backup and restore, then custom, custom backup job, (you want to select ((put X beside)) backup boot, backup recovery, backup system, backup preload, backup and-sec, backup modem, backup /data data, backup /data/media)
10. Now select start custom backup job, backup to /storage/sdcard (this will take a long time)
11. Now go back to backup and restore, custom, custom backup job, and only select efs (now your phone is completely backed up)
12. Now choose Wipe data/factory reset, clean to install new rom
13. Now choose Mounts and Storage, format /data and data/media
14. Now choose Install zip, choose zip from /storage/sdcard then select the rom you decided (lorjays or synergy)
15. After install reboot to system.
16. Once it boots up hold the power button and power off the phone.
17. Reboot into download/odin (vol-, menu, power)
18. Connect to PC and open the odin program again
19. Click on the PDA button and choose wifi fix, then click start
20. Phone will reboot and then you will setup the rom
Now you have a rooted Touchwiz 4.3 rom
If you have any questions please ask before you start the process!!! If anything goes wrong your phone will be unusable till you can get me or someone else to help you. So please ask questions first!!!

Thanks for the steps, really appreciate it.
Ok. I might do it tomorrow since it's late here already but here is what I have done on my own so far. I hope I didn't mess anything
I have used the Samsung Note 2 Toolkit as mentioned in some of my previous messages and did the option 2 which is a
Root/Unroot option and selected the ALL IN ONE[ Flash insecure boot, Recovery, Root, BusyBox, Rename Restore Files ]
After following the instructions it rebooted and it is now rooted but still using android 4.1.2
I am thinking of using synergy-n2-4dot3_r3.zip since it's looks better and as you mentioned, has Note 3 features :fingers-crossed:
I am going to upload it via Kies Air to the phone the synergy-n2-4dot3_r3.zip file.
Tomorrow will continue...

Well, I did it !!!
I am trying the Synergy rom and so far it's looking great.
I wish I had 4G LTE capabilities since my cricket plan does allow such feature, but before I had 3G and it's working well so far.
If any trouble arises, I will post them.
Thanks !!!
