I have a problem with my Tmobile g2 running 2.2, it is all stock no modifications whatsoever other than handcent and fancy widget.
The problem is I can not connect to 3g or hsdpa network when I am at home. By this I mean the cell tower that provides service when I am at home. I have txt and calling capabilites but I have no data whatsoever. I have to manually switch to 2g or edge to check email or use the browser. I have called tmobile and they keep telling me that the problem is with my phone, however when I am 2 or 3 miles from my house and it goes to any other tower on the planet everything works fine.
I have searched the g2 forum here but could find no answers. I apologize in advance if this has been indeed covered or discussed to death and I have just failed to find it.
I did find the *#*#4636#*#* option and when it is on 2g I can run a ping test and it finds the server just fine, but on 3g it always fails to connect. Again this only occurs of course when I am sitting at home!
Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this or point me in the right direction because leaving it up to tmobile has proven to be fruitless.
It might also be worth mentioning that i replaced the sim card today as well, this too had no effect on this phenomenon.....
My mom's nexus s has the same problem. Only difference is that when i walk out the door i get 3g. Once i walk back in, I get edge...... I think its might be just tmobile frequencies poor ability to pentrate walls.
Sounds like a problem with the 3G network in your area, or just a weak signal there.
I know its not the signal strength, I always have full bars at home Its something to do with the network....

Full bars on 3G or 2G ? If you have full bars on 3G then it sounds like a network problem.
I have the exact same problem, but my building is probably over 100 years old with 300 coats of lead paint on it. It depends on your building. Signals can bounce off of mirrors for example and other materials. The more material the signal has to go through, the more attenuation happens.
I have a similar problem, my G2 can't maintain a consistent connection, I will go from 4 bars of HSPA+ to 4 bars of Edge to nothing (lost connection to network) and it will jump around wildly between these three states (every few minutes). My wife's MyTouch 4G doesn't do this, my G1 did not do this, our kids (dumb) phones have consistent connections.
I know it's some interaction between my phone and the TMO network, I'd say it was a defective phone except the only place it happens is inside my house.
I wish that TMO offered a microcell.
There is no reception problem, I have had the phone working here for awhile and it always has full bars, like I said I can hop in the car and drive a couple miles and it works just fine. Tmobile finally got back to me today and said they are having their Engineers troubleshoot the tower that provides service when I am home. I hope they get this fixed soon, they said 72 hours.......

I've had my HOX now for just over a month and i'm loving it. One thing that is slightly bugging me is that occasionally the phone signal will completely cut out giving me an 'x' where the signal strength normally is and telling me that I can only make emergency calls only.
This will correct itself within 30 seconds or so and go back to giving me a signal. This doesnt happen all the time which has made it harder for me to diagnose. Do you think it is a problem with the sim card (Orange UK network) or is it likey to be an issue with the radio software?
I never had an issue with Orange on my Desire although this is a different SIM card.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I think this is a common problem I'm on Vodafone and this happens to me. I applied a fix when installing insertcoin Rom a while back and it doesn't do it as often now.
I'm glad this has been mentioned now because my One X (On Vodafone) drops connection all the time. The amount of times that I have been somewhere and needed to transfer money through the Natwest App and haven't been able to is getting annoying now. As I am not rooted I can't try any fixes but I have found by using GSM only around where I live, it won't drop signal half as much or often. I don't have a 3G mast near me so its always dropping connection switching between the two as opposed to a smooth transition.

You are not alone. I'm on Orange UK and have seen this problem on quite a few occasions. Unfortunately, as yet I can't see any pattern to understand when it happens or what causes it.

As it seems to cover more than 1 network, could it be a radio issue that is addressed in a future firmware upgrade?
It is definitely not just you. I'm in Malaysia on the Maxis network and have this problem as well. It happens randomly - at the most it happens twice in a day.
Do you also sometimes get the message 'Preparing SIM card...' at the bottom of the screen?
I brought my phone to the HTC service centre and they offered to take it in to test the radio. I will do this when I get back from my holiday and keep you guys posted!

I do get that message at the bottom of the screen. I'd be interested to hear what the outcome is once you've had your radio tested.
Yep, it's the [email protected] radio firmware HTC has provided us with. Radio 2.05 is much better. HTC are useless with updates. I've had problems with my network connection for 2 months!

Except I am on Tim @ Brasil.
This is nearly always down to signal.
If you're in an area that has decent 2G signal but fluctuating/low 3G signal then the phone will keep trying to connect to the 3G signal. Sometimes it'll be too weak and not be ableto connect and will stick with the 2G signal. If the 3G signal is only just strong enough to connect the phone will switch to 3G mode (dropping the 2G signal). Then it'll realise that the 3G signal is too weak to do anything with (showing an 'X' in the signal area) and drop back to your full 2G signal.
3G signal is breathable which means that if lots of people are connected to the 3G mast then it's signal area (i.e. distance from mast) is reduced. If no-one is using the 3G mast then it's area is bigger.
Perhaps your signal is breathing in and out of use where you are.
Obviously the radio can have an affect too, but with so many people using the same radio software there are going to be some it works well for and others it doesn't.
Personally, I keep my phone on 2G/GSM Only for most of the time and then switch to 3G when I want to use data. I hardly ever get problems with signal, and if I do I shrug and put it down to the coverage in the area I'm in.
P.S. Saying this, my 2G signal seems to drop in and out when I have WiFi turned on. Usually when I'm using wifi I'm not making calls anyway so it doesn't bother me...

It seemed 'good enough' to me, but I only had 2 days with my phone on 2.05 and then my camera wouldn't work at all. So I sent the phone back for a replacement. Crazy it's still not fixed!
I've had 5 faulty phones now.

Which is correct, however any phone working correctly should manage to switch between 2G/3G without problems, i.e. you should not find the phone without a signal at all provided there is 2G coverage, which seems to be the case being reported here. My previous phones with 3G/2G never had a problem, and the HTC One X has been no different for me, it hasn't dropped it's signal, I'm on Vodafone in UK.

Settings -> Mobile Network -> Network mode then set to GSM only.

This is happening fairly regularly for me on UK T-Mobile. Seems to happen when switching between Orange and T-Mobile or T-Mobile and 3G T-Mobile. I've got a ROM that distinguishes between a 2G and 3G connection in the carrier name area.

Which, and what about it was supposed to be a fix? I'm using MaXimus 2.1.
It happens to me also. I'm on 3 in Denmark. They providing only 3G coverage in area. So far, I figured out that it's happening when I'm loosing signal completly (i.e. when I go down in concrete basement), and when I'm within coverage again, phone is unable to register on any network at all. Sometimes can help turn airplane mode on and off, or sometimes I have to turn phone off and on again.

I'm in the Los Angeles area where Sprint's 4G Network is just being built up. The service is terribly slow, even when on the 4G Network. My question/problem though is, I've noticed that when I go from one area to another, for instance if I'm at a shopping center and on tower that's 3G and then cross the street to another shopping center that has a tower that's 4G... my Data gets all screwed up. Somehow in the process of connecting to a new tower with a different speed, my Data always freezes up and you can't do anything for long periods of time. I'm talking anywhere from 5-10 minutes. I often have to put my phone into Airplane mode and reconnect to get anything moving.
Just wondering if this was a common occurrence? Or if this is just a result of Sprint's crappy network, or what.
On a related note, I've also noticed that even if I'm not going between towers, there are a lot of times when my phone says it has a strong Data Connection on either 3G or 4G, say 3 bars or so, and yet my Data hangs and I can't use the web. Any ideas what the cause might be?

The bars do not determine your signal strength. There's cases where people have no bars but data is still being transferred and get fantastic speeds. I recommend installing Speedtest and depending on your results you should call your network provider on the data issue

Yeah, I have Speedtest. The speeds in LA are awful. Usually range from 0.54 to 0.78 mbps DL on 3G. On 4G its about 8.7 - 9.13.
And thanks for the response, but I still don't understand what the connection issue is between Towers and I'm pretty sure calling Sprint to ask them what the deal is would be a waste of 3 hours.

I may not know what can cause this issue but I can try to help on making it a tad better. Check out my recent post on how to increase your data speed on the Note 2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2253340 and if your data does hang, try going into Settings, More Settings, Mobile networks, and just uncheck and check Mobile data. Hope this helps out.
Does anyone know how to have the bar indicator read HSPA even when I'm connected to LTE? To me, when I'm connected to LTE I could care less about signal strength because speed is all that matters. I prefer to know how my call would be, so I'd like the bars to read my HSPA signal and forget about the LTE strength. I like to know I'm connected to LTE but like i said, i could care less about what the LTE strength is. If anyone knows how or could point me in the right direction, that would be awesome if its possible. I've looked all over the place and couldn't find it, all the threads I've found tell you how to change the icons and such, which I've done. But this is something I do not know. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Signal bars don't have anything to do with LTE. Unless I completely misread what you said.

Reading this as you have written it, it sounds like you want to read the other car's spedometer on your dashboard and don't care what speed YOU are going at... (not very much of a useful report)............
It makes no sense and is most likely impossible due to the fact that the "strength" is read according to the frequency the radio is working.
Also, "Strength" is not the correct description of the signal bars shown, as it is a COMBINATION of available bandwidth as well as signal strength properties. You could be having a GOOD signal, but there are too many users in your cell service area so the bars are less of a quantity, but you still have service. It's too bad they didn't have a better way of showing that condition.....

I appreciate the response. The thing is, the bars haven't been consistent with speed. At one bar where I work, I pull down 15 Megs, when I go to lunch at the Mcdonalds I have 5 bars of LTE and pull 15 megs. Bars on HSPA also factor in Call quality where as LTE doesn't because you can't make calls on it. The phone has to stay connected to HSPA because of this, I basically want to be able to see my call strength before Make a call. I've read in certain phones especially on Verizon and other carriers especially, they manipulate the signal this way to make it look better. That's what I'm after in a nutshell.
Just change the data settings so that the phone only goes up to HSPA connections. Basically turn off LTE entirely.
That will always show HSPA strength in the status bar because it will always be connected at HSPA signal strength.
He wants lte. But does not care how strong the lte signal is. He only cares about being able to see the hsdpa connection strength.
With that said, if you have lte, you more than likely have full connection to hsdpa. I've forced hsdpa while in a one bar lte zone and hsdpa read full bars. So if your data connection says lte, 99.9 percent of the time you will have full hsdpa connection.

If he wan'ts that then he can't have it. The radio can only connect to one signal type at a time. And the only way to know what the HSPA signal strength is would be to be connected to it so it can be monitored. So in any situation where it's possible to determine the HSPA signal strength, you can't be connected to LTE.
Unless you carry another phone around that's always connected to HSPA and use that as a refference, but that seems....dumb.

I was just wondering if it was possible My question becomes, if it can only be connected to LTE and not both, how do I receive incoming calls cuz I know that they don't do calls over LTE yet cuz they haven't launched VOLTE. Unless you were a lucky Mtetro PCS Customer. Not trying to be a pain in the ass, legitimately curious.

Your connection switches to hsdpa. If you set your connection to "lte only" calls will not work. So it switches before connecting. And about VOLTE, will we need a new phone for that to work or is it basically a T-Mobile side thing?

Seeing 4 bars of LTE signal strength on my phone is like seeing a unicorn.
I live in Upstate NY and I have the A705MN phone.
I have tried three different sim cards, all of them of course GSM compatible. The result is exactly the same among all three. I typically get 1 or 2 bars LTE.
My previous phones under the same carrier and same sim card were typically 4-5 bars. (The Wifi strength, BTW, is equal to what I've seen from my other phones.)
What can I do to improve the signal strength?
I've seen posts by those with S10's where they do something to disable specific bands. But I'm not sure how to do that on the A70 phone. I've tried the specific codes that were mentioned in threads for the S10, but those codes do not work on the A70.
Please help. As much as I like the Samsung otherwise, this factor might be the reason I return the phone.

Thank you for the screenshots.
I edited the access point that I'm using and changed it to LTE. But then when I go to select network mode, I cannot chose LTE Only. That option does not show up. I have tried rebooting after editing and selecting the Access Point, and I still do not see that option.
I have tried using apps such as 4g Network Only and have switched to LTE only, but that change does not seem to make a difference or the network goes down altogether.
Any suggestions?

There was a post in the forum for using settings editor app to enable LTE only option. It will enable this option for both sims.

The real problem with this antenna is that if I step inside a supermarket or bathroom then my connection is gone. If I'm traveling around the state of NY, in more remote areas, I'm sure I will not have a chance of any connection.
I would LOVE this phone if it had a better antenna. I can deal with the subpar fingerprint reader. Just give me a strong antenna like all of my previous phones and then I'd be a happy camper!
I decided not to return the phone so I am stuck with this phone.

Setting the band to lte only would help in better reception even at low signal strength. One thing I had noticed in lte band is its consistency in connection speeds and call quality even with low signal. I think this is because of the high bandwidth of the lte signals. But I'm not an expert in it. Try changing the band to lte only. It should work better.

But I'm trying to get better signal, rather than better reception with low signal.
There's got to be something wrong with my phone. It blacks out if I step inside a bathroom in a building and such and it's very rarely at 4 bars.
A thing I noticed. If I go and select 2g/3g only (switch off 4g lte) my signal reception instantly switches to full (4 bars) Usually I get around 2 bars with LTE active.
The strange part is that even with lte off I can still receive an lte 4g signal when outside..this is perfect for me as it means i have a really strong signal (reception) indoors but still have the benefit of 4G outside. I don't quite understand it tbh. I mean i have switched to "2g/3g only" yet i still see 4G pop up in the status bar on my commute, and it definitely receiving 4G speeds. I'm not sure if it's a bug or not but I kinda like it.

That's a terrific idea. Thank you for bringing that up.
I am implementing your suggesteion and it's nice to see 3-4 bars of strength again.
I don't need the fastest data connection. I just need a strong or secure basic data connection, since most of the time I'm not doing anything data intensive with my phone anyway when I"m away from a wifi connection.
But I'm not sure if my phone hops up to LTE at anytime.. I wish had the same "bug" that you do. I just started testing with your settings so I'll see if I can get it so that 3g is the preferred and basic network and 4g is the optional...
After another day, I'm back to LTE/3g/2g auto.
The general reception even for 3g or 2g is lower overall than what I saw from every other phone I have used. So in areas where I can expect to have a relatively low signal I get a particularly low signal for all bands, 4g, 3g, and 2g. That being the case, there's no practical difference if I cap my connection or not.
Samsung better warranty this phone. Does anyone know who I should call?
Since I bought my phone through an Ebay seller and the phone is West Carribean stock, not USA stock, which is where I am, I have no warranty on this phone.
