Hello,
I've been enjoying this phone a lot, and now I'm looking at rooting, custom ROMs and kernels, but I don't want to increase the flash counter.
I understand that if you simply flash for example this ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2029070) using ODIN, the flash counter won't increase. If you then flash the stock ROM and do a factory reset it is pretty much ready to return to the shop and still has its warranty.
Is this correct?
PS: I also read that you can install a custom kernel without increasing the flash counter using the "dd" command. Does this require root? Will simply reflashing the stock ROM give back warranty like before or does it require extra steps?

Flashing pre-rooted roms using the advance rooting guide won't increase flash counts.
And using dd in applying custom kernel also won't count.
Now that you have zero count you can still claim your warranty...
Just flash back the ROM from Samsung (downloadable via Sammobile.com/firmware)

I'm going to be a bit stubborn, though.
If I download a pre-rooted ROM, do I still have to follow the steps in the advanced rooting guide or can I just flash it straight away?
Does using the dd command to install a custom kernel require root access?

Most of the pre-rooted ROMs comes with pda and csc and you can flash it through odin straight away no more other thing to do...
and installing custom kernels using dd needs root (that's where pre-rooted roms comes in handy)

Okay basically, when I got my phone I used the toolkit to root my phone, busybox, and CWR on the phone. Now I flashed like so many different roms, I want to go back to stock, I realize how important to have a stable OS then a buggy one. How can I do this, do I need Odin? if so would this void any warranty?
I hear if you use Odin, then the device will always show that I voided the warranty. is this true?

If you want to go back to stock and keep root access, then follow this guide to the letter (skip the custom recovery part if you want to)

If you want to go back to stock without root, do the same thing, but use the applicable image from http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SGH-I747M instead. TLS is Telus, RWC is Rogers and BMC is Bell. None of these will void warranty because they are stock images. I've done this, using the rooted images, to make a backup that I forgot to make when I first flashed a custom rom and It didn't trip my flash counter. Flashing stock images, as I understand, is pretty much like doing an official update, so it won't trip your flash counter or anything like that and your warranty will be intact. Hope this helps!

You gave me some good info. I flashed my phone with odin using a stock image. However, I rooted my phone and it told me to use a insecure image. So to be rooted you cant use the offical stock rom? is this correct?

Even if you load your default stock provider ROM with Odin, you can still re-flash recovery and then flash SuperSU or Superuser (whatever app you prefer) and it will show your on a custom binary, but your OS is still stock + root. It won't affect the operation of the stock rom to my knowledge. Anytime I ever run into an issue, I just take my Telus Stock tarball and flash it with Odin, then I'm completely stock, including the bootloader and recovery app. Once I'm ready to start loading ROMs again, just flash the CWM recovery, it goes to custom, but your free to do whatever.

I was using the toolkit and it made me choose an insecure rom to give me root, busybox, and CWR. if I can just get the stock rom that came with my provider and have it rooted, I rather do that. I mean its not a big deal I guess if im using insecure rom, but I want to know why its called insecure rom. I want to know if there is a difference.

As I understand it, an insecure rom simply means it can grant root access. So if your rom is not insecure, and an application asks for superuser (root) access, it won't be able to get it. If you're insecure, and you have an app to manage superuser access (Superuser, SuperSU) then it can be allowed/granted as you like. As someone else said, if you're using the rooted rom, and you have an issue that you think might need warranty work, simply flash your unrooted stock rom and bring it in. The only problem would be if you had a problem that prevented you from flashing, but even then, if it was that bad, it's probably beyond warranty issues anyway. Again, hope this helps out, cheers.

First you have to root the phone and have CWM recovery that you flash with Odin, if you want to flash a custom kernel (wich is usualy a zip file). This will raise the flash counter. Flashing a kernel from the phone does not raise the counter. You can reset the flash counter with Triangle Away. A related issue. Those custom kernels like neak or note2core comes with busybox (in /sbin). Mybackup complains that it is outdated. So I installed BusyBox with newest busybox (installed in /system/bin). Obviously I have two busyboxes. I can delete busybox in /sbin but it will come back after reboot. How do solve this issue?

I just got an s4 on tmobile and I have some questions. I tried rooting it and ran into an error. I found an answer online, which was to flash a stock 4.3 rom via odin, then try the CFT autoroot. So it's all good and I'm rooted. I just have some questions:
1. Why was I able to flash a rom via odin, when all the rom installation guides I see require a CWM or some other recovery?
2. When I try to boot up into recovery I think it's the stock recovery and not a custom recovery that allows me to install a zip. When I used CFT auto root, I saw it booted into a custom recovery to root, did it just get deleted after that?
3. How will my root work with the 4.4 ota? When I check for software updates it says my phone has been modified so they aren't available. So how can I get the ota? Am i better off flashing a custom 4.4 rom? I want closest to stock as possible, so if you have any recommendations for stock 4.4 roms that would be great. Or can I flash the 4.4 stock rom as I did with odin?
4. How does tethering work with root? If I have unlimited data with 2.5gb tethering data, now that I'm rooted, can tmobile tell I'm tethering if I'm using a root tethering app?

No if it is an untouched fully stock rom/firmware but there will be rooted versions of the stock firmware/rom.
Stay with root, you will be better off, custom roms are usually available within a day after ota updates

hey guys,
I need help asap! I tried using the video on this website to root my tmobile S4. I downloaded Kies, Odin 3.07, ROOT_M919UVUAMDL.zip, and CWM as recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.2-jfltetmo.tar, I did NOT install triangle away( i forgot). I went through the steps and passed in Odin. then, when I pulled the battery and booted in CWM i couldnt find the file so i went to the store to buy a sdcard. when I came home i re-ran through Odin and found the root zip on the external sdcard. I successfully installed the root zip and clicked reboot. my problem arose when it showed a "KERNEL IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING" in red, and a "SET WARANTY BIT: KERNEL" in yellow. it seems to be frozen in this screen and i can only use the CWM and Download mode. I have tried re-using Odin .
Please help!!
That's an old root method. You can either
1) flash a custom ROM and go about your business
2) Odin back to stock firmware and root with cf-auto root or towelroot

1) You can find tons of Custom ROMs here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-tmobile/development
You usually flash them to your phone via a Custom Recovery such as CWM or TWRP. Or, is some cases you can use ODIN. Read, Read, Read, Read before your flash. It is very easy to do, but you need to understand what you are doing. All Custom ROMs come pre-rooted.
2) You can download a stock ROM from here:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
Or, you can use Kies to download and install the most recent firmware for your phone.
TowelRoot is a new option for rooting stock ROMs that are version 4.4.2 (KitKat). This method of rooting doesn't trip the Knox flag.

Thanks for replying however, you do not flash custom ROMs via Odin, you need a custom recovery like twrp or cwm.. Stock firmware you do flash via Odin.. And their Knox flag is already tripped, wouldn't matter

Thanks for correcting me that most of the time you flash Custom ROMs via a Custom Recovery on the S4.
But, if I'm not mistaken you can flash Custom ROMs via ODIN as long as in the right format and you select the correct partition.
However, most of my Custom ROM history is with a HTC device, so I may be mistaken.

It is possible but 99% of custom ROMs are not made to be flashed with Odin, in the past two years I've only seen about 1. And it is also inconvenient

Just root it as posted in sticky thread.
You don't have warranty, so just don't bother. Use odin, root and install recovery, then rom.
You can flash stock rom via odin if you want, you can install custom roms via recovery.
I'm using TWRP for 2 years and never had any problem. You can also use Philz. For normal user it doesn't really matter.

Actually I found no sticky threads for rooting 4.4.2. Most of the sticky threads are dating since 2012 with 4.1.2 & 4.3.
However by searching I found 2 threads for 4.4.2, one of them is

This one uses CF-auto-root... but no mention about any custom recovery. Will I lose root or mess things up if I install TWRP after that??

This one uses the typical steps that I know, custom recovery then SuperSU. But it uses Philz recovery. Can I substitute it with TWRP??

The most important question: Why do you want to root?
If you like to flash a custom rom no need for root, any custom recovery - TWRP or CWM - flashed with Odin will do.

I'm not planning to flash custom rom right now, may be later.
I want to root to be able to use some apps that require root. Plus, having full control over my phone.
In odin you have option to choose recovery file - AP.
After flashing recovery just install superSU via recovery.
DO a backup of your device and EFS before you flash anything.

I don't know how to make a backup without recovery. So I flashed TWRP 2.8.6, took a backup then installed SuperSU via TWRP.
All went well except that I lost the signal and IMEI.
I found that I flashed TWRP t03gup while I should flashed t03g.
I reflashed the correct file then flashed the modem.bin of XXUFND3.
Everything thing is back to normal again except 2 things:
The icon of my service provider shifts place to the last app page after reboot, no matter where I place it...
The phone status shows custom (expected) but stays so even after using Triangle Away.
Is it better if I flash the stock firmware then recovery then SuperSU? ?? Or flashing the modem as I did was enough to straighten things up? ?

It should be OK just as it is now, but if you have 30min free time, you can flash stock, root, custom rom with full wipe to make sure you have everything straighten up

30 min or even an hour is ok by me...
I'll do it right away. Flash stock, TWRP recovery then root with SuperSU.
As for the custom rom it'll have to wait as I didn't make up my mind which Lollipop to get... I'm kinda confused about it very much. I can't decide which to get.

If you need your phone for business don't flash lollipop. Still in beta phase, so bugs are occuring often.

My phone is for personal use not for business.
But I think I'll follow your advice & give Dr. Ketan's V14 a try.
I did flash stock firmware then flashed TWRP 2.8.6 (correct file this time.. lol) then installed root.
I did backup my phone & EFS by TWRP. All is excellent now.
Now I'll backup my contacts, sms, apps & data using Titanium back up then go for Dr. ketan's rom.
