[Q] - Note 2 Noob - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there,
it's now been 1 week since I have my new Note II. Must say: awesome
I know that I haven't discovered all phones feature but I'm exited to discover them. Last cool thing found out: Say "Cheese" to make a photo
I've got some question :
1) Actually I've got a TPU case but I would to change it. I'd like to have a Diary Case but I could not find any usefull. The biggest problem was to extract the S-Pen with the diary case I've tested. I'd like to have one that does not have this problem and that have a hole to hear well calls without open it. It should protect well if it accidentally fall down (but I didn't like things like Defender Case). Could you suggest anything?
Optional : Have the possibility to put the phone horizontally
2) When I press the Home button, when it is in stand-by, I must wait 1 second before I can unlock my phone. Why? I'd like to have it immediately. I already disables S-Voice, anything else to do?
3) I'm searching a little bluetooth keyboard, not little as the phone. I was asking me: should I search for a keyboard with trackpad or is it not usefull? (I need the keyboard mainly to take notes)
4) S-Pen : Do you manage to write properly? Is there a cheat or anything? :silly: I've have tested to write something but it seems hard for me
5) Are there any Must-Have apps for Note 2?
6) I've have got problem with the stock email app. Doesn't download mail even with syncro on etc, I delete the email and then he re-download it. Is this normal?
Thanks a lot guys :good:
PS. Power to the Note 2!!

I cant answer all the question as i do not have any knowl3dge about the accesories for note 2
Ques2: try and go to the developer option and turn off all the animations or maybe change it to ×0.5
Ques 4: yes, but i have heard that some have got a too sensitive s pen, and if you have that you should get it replaced
"If i have helped you, just hit the "thanks" button pls"-sent from my GT-N7100...some guides here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2055827 .... drop some question here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2055736

Adding another Q..

1- you should really visit a accessory or mobile shop which keeps all kinds of stuff, there you'll see variety. seeing just the pic and ordering isn't gonna satisfy you
2- I really hate when people curse about waiting 2-3 seconds for a job to be done. i mean how long can be one second
3-you should search galaxy note 2. in my opinion lend a normal Bluetooth keyboard and see if it works with your phone. i read it's possible, but try it first.again accessory store could help. i saw a apple keyboard being connected to note 2.
4- you gotta practice with the s pen. i have used the phone for 2 weeks, and with continuous typing(swype) i manage to write well. do try swiftkey3 and swiftkey flow with pen. they are good apps.
5-must have- no, there isn't actually much use imao, according to my daily use, maybe for others it is. yeah i do make drawings for time pass or write memos instead of typing them in my stupid and not understandable by normal beings , s note and paper artist are enough imao. if you do a lot of video viewing or are new to android air view might help or really are a multitasking user or a busy one, multi window should be a delight.
6-if you can normally use it now just don't give a damn what happened
hope i helped you. if i did hit thanks

Create your own list of 'must have apps' according to your preferences.
For me it would be Opera Mobile, Kindle, Kobo, UB Reader, Google Translate, Merriam-Webster, Advanced English Dictionary and Thesaurus, Quickoffice Pro, Note Everything, Currency, Astro File Manager, Endomondo, Sports Tracker, NBA Game Time, MX Player Pro, Winamp Pro, PowerAmp Pro, Sound Hound, TuneIn Radio Pro, Convertor Pro, Gallery Lock Pro, Smart Tools, a dozens of games and of course xda premium

There is a must have list of apps thread in the themes section
scribbled from my note 2 (N7100)

Probably one of the BEST contact programs and keyboard you will ever use

I found this Contact Manager just today while I was browsing online.
http://pocketcm.com/index.php
It works great on my 8525 and is all touch activated, kind of resembles the iphone. Works nicely. There is also a keyboard program that copies the iphone as well.
Just thought I would share with the community.

I like it also, but I find it difficult to scroll precisely. Sometimes it goes 10 contacts ahead, sometimes 100!
And it is a litte difficult to really close it.
The keyboard I really like.
There are big threads running in the General section.

Sorry I didn't really know where to post it. I guess I should have put it there.
What I figured out is that if you want to close it, you just hit the hang up button and then it closes like with any other program really. And if you want it to scroll slower you just move your finger slower. I've been playing around with it all night and seems to be working out. Remember this is just a BETA version of it. So it has a lot of potential and it moves pretty fast.
There are threads already for it. Please research a bit before posting, Please read rules before posting http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=221545

Easy way to close it is to take it out of fullscreen mode. Then you can hit the x-button to close it like any other program.
thanks!
I just want to say big ups to all of you guys. I just recently completed some customizations on my (once boring) 8525. The pocket cm is wonderful and the pocketcm keyboard is a nice touch. I do have one question.
It seems that i cannot send sms' directly from pocket cm. Is there a way that you can sms your contacts directly from the pocket cm?
Thanks
just have to press and hold the send button in pocket cm for like a 2 second count and it sends.

PocketCM it's great, but about keyboard I think that "touchpal" it's better.
link for touchpal is http://www.cootek.com/intro.html

Child locks?

I picked up a Samsung Epic for my daughter who is 6, has helped her a ton with reading and spelling by the excitement of sending and receiving text messages from some family members.
On her phone I would like her to be able to access select items that I create widgets or short cuts too on her screens, however I would like her to not be able to access any "settings", market or any app I haven't set on her desktop.
Anyone know a great app to do this with?
The apps that I have on her desktop are:
Phone/Contacts/Messaging
Camera/Gallery
My Coffee Card (widget)
Picture Frame (widget)
Zoodles
Chess
Pure Weather Widget
Pure Calendar Widget
and a Flash light widget.
She quickly figured out the phone, how to work the market, change her wall paper, change her ring tones and most everything else..Would just like to limit her access and use of the device.
Thanks a ton!
http://www.appbrain.com/app/smart-lock-2-0/com.goldfishview.smartlock
http://www.appbrain.com/app/toddler-lock/marcone.toddlerlock
Thanks for the links, but not really what I am looking for. More of something that won't let her create any short cuts or widgets, not not access any settings and not be able to open the app drawer without a code.
Something like this might not be present yet, however I think it is something many parents would pay for.
You could try using a custom launcher for example adw launcher
U can place whatever u want on the desktop and there's a "lock desktop" option so nothing can change wich can b found by pressing menu on the homescreen
And then u can go to the adw settings > general behavior > system prefences. And over there u can uncheck any option u don't want to show up on the menu button so uncheck "lock screen" so it won't show up and ur daughter won't b able to unlock the homescreens to change stuff
Also u may creat a category for the app drawer and remove any apps u don't want her to open so it will only show the ones you chose to show up
And I guess that will solve ur problem..?

Why not? My 4 year old daughter is rockin' CM7 on her Nook Color and she's got my old Moment too. These are great educational tools as well as toys for big boys.

I have to agree. We considered it for a while, the pros and cons. After all consideration we went with it as an educational tool.
We didn't want her to feel dependent upon it or become overly obsessed with it however there was a void in her spelling and reading abilities.. Almost over night her ability to spell and read increased greatly!
She has played Angry Birds and watched Hanna Montanna vids from YouTube (uncle and aunts doing), however her options to text message and play Zoodles has been great! One of the cool things as well, we went out to a Starbucks and she set up the Chess board for us to play, she has Chess on her phone.
Thanks for all the feedback, will try out that idea with a launcher tomorrow.
Adw launcher would have the better options I guess for what you seek. Glad to hear someone else realize the benefit of android for kids!

Child Proof Gadget-Child Lock
A new app is there in google play store. It is also useful if your kid is playing with your android phone. It has all required features, with this its size is very small and it is harmless for your phone. It locks phones homescreen, calls, sms, settings everything which you don't want to allow the kid. it has a facility to create separate 'kid area', where kid can access only allowed apps.
App name : Child Proof Gadget-Child Lock

S-Note Question

Hi Everyone,
In the video below, at around 2:30, the S-Note app is launched and it opens a New Note at start-up. I haven't been able to do that. Whenever I launch S-Note, it opens a list of existing books by type, with a plus sign on the top right, which has to be tapped in order to create a new note. How can I configure S-Note to open a New Note automatically at start-up, like in the video? I appreciate all help.

Of course. What I found out is that there is actually no way of doing what I wanted. In the video, what happened is that most certainly the Notes app had already been opened and all the steps needed to create a new note had already been taken, and the app was running in the background. So then, in the video, when the app was "opened" from the Multi-Window, it seemed that it was being launched, but actually it was only being brought to the foreground.
Regards,
Alan
If you wanna open a quick note just hold the button on the s-pen and double tap the screen.

First of all Welcome to XDA.. and great choice. Note 2 is amazing.
Start slow. If this is not your first android, then start with what apps you already had on your prior phone,
Go thru all the settings, some of them are very cool.
Try the motion sensor help and tutorials.
If this is your first android get used to the android world. Key is to not hurry. and you will learn and get used to things.

hello and welcome to xda !
first of all try read to learn about amazing android features (root, flashing, etc)
if you have any question, ther's Q&A section
and don't forget to search before asking because i bet that all your questions had been asked before :fingers-crossed:
Hi there and welcome. To add on to what the other guys said, the best way to go is to just look through all the menus and get familiar with where the various settings and options are and what they do.
Look up some blogs or posts that go over the basics of android and customisation. For example alternative home screens like apex launcher and Nova launcher are quite popular and really great if you want to make your home screen really stand out.
Also look into alternative keyboards if you find that the stock keuboard doesn't suit you to well. Keyboards like swift key and thumb keyboard are quite popular.
And as someone else already mentioned, going through the q&a section is a good way to learn about any issues and questions others have already asked.
Have fun

Just get used to it. Don't rush. I also bought this great gadget a few weeks ago. If you are an avid reader download Kindle, Kobo, Aldiko Premium, or UB Reader and enjoy thousands of books. Look which browser suits you best. Download Opera Mobile, truly great browser. Download Polaris Office from Samsung Apps or get Quickoffice Pro or Kingsoft Office from Google Play. Get app Note Everything, looks like a must have app.

[Q] Is Samsung done developing S-Note?

The ONLY thing that makes me even think about buying a wildly overpriced Windows 8 tablet is the ability to use OneNote. The sad part is that S-Note is just so damned close to being a OneNote killer app but it seems like Samsung got 80% of the way there and JUST QUIT.
Let's start with the unreadable .snb standard. As far as I can tell, even .snb readers for Windows can't read it. Unless you export your S-Notes as .pdf''s you are pretty much screwed being able to view them on your Desktop. So why would Samsung choose such an obscure standard with zero compatibility? Next can we talk about Templates? How hard would it be for Samsung to include a Template Editor so the grown-ups can create and save their own Templates instead of being forced to use the few Samsung thinks we all want? How about being able to create and save typing styles? How about being able to restart voice recording on a previously created S-Note? How about being able to embed a recording within a specific spot in your S-Note? If I can embed a video why can't I embed a recording? One of the best things about OneNote is being able to search on written text. Samsung, any ideas on that? How about being able to place a typing cursor just by clicking the screen where I want it? How about automatically typing around pictures instead of over them? How about being able too cut and move blocks of text?
So much about S-Notes just doesn't seen done to me, but as far as I can tell, those crazy Koreans at Samsung think it's perfect as is.
Please Samsung, I don't want to buy a Windows 8 tablet but you are forcing my hand.
** I am hoping that the new Awesome Note app coming with the Note 8.0 will solve some of these issues assuming we'll be able port it to our Note 2.

Why don't u do the work and forward the post that you wrote here to Samsung ... you have a better chance of it happening i if you were to send your recommendations to Samsung ... Not many on here work for Samsung I am guessing ....
Maybe they just don't have creative people on this app. ... maybe they would give you something as a reward. .. never know until you try ... or you could learn Java code your own app and instant profit

Awesome idea! Please give me the personal email of the Head of S-Note Development at Samsung and I'll get right on that. While you are at it, link me to the Samsung Support Forums on their website - oh that's right, Samsung doesn't have Support Forums.
I'm so happy a super-connected guy like you came along to solve the problem.
Also, I really should have bought a Java book and rewritten the entire S-Notes app myself as you suggest. I'm so dumb. I could have made millions!

Why don't you do a search finding samsungs emails isnt that hard. Or you could just keep stomping your feet and crying about it. That's really productive. samsungs forum's aren't on samsung.com but Google can tell you how to find em if you actually, you know, searched.
Edit: just cuz I'm feeling nice http://developer.samsung.com/forum/en took all of 2 seconds searching "samsung + forum" on teh googlez
I like to break stuff!
