Woww - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

So I've been using this thing for a few days and all I can say is wow. I've never gone a day without rooting and flashing a Rom on any android device I've ever owned. I can't believe how smooth and amazing this thing is out of the box. Battery life is unbelievable. Ok so I wanted to ask is that even a point of flashing a Rom on right now? What are you guys currently running and had your battery life remained as good or is it worse/better?

Bunch of folks will tell you yes,
Me, as a seasoned Android user (4th phone) will say "not me".
I just can't see the point, at this point.
Maybe root for the sake of a rooted installation of Avast Anti Theft.
Maybe root and recovery to flash an OC kernel.
Personally I'm good just as I am.
Sent from my SGH-I317M using xda premium

Well with rooting u can install an international rom that has the multi window feature. Also the perseus kernel has the exploit fix and u can also di a hack for google wallet to work.

What's the deal with avast anti theft and root?
Sent from my SGH-I317M using xda app-developers app

Personally, I don't feel the need to really make any modifications to the software on my Note II - it works well enough out of the box that I will more than likely leave it stock and unrooted. Battery life is amazing thus far, moderate usage today and barely put a so much as a dent in it (which is a big difference over my S III, which I could run down in a matter of a few hours depending on what I was doing).

I myself thought I was going to have an issue with touchwiz due to coming from various HTC devices as well as a few vanilla android handsets. However, this device has been amazing. I did root it as I have a few apps that need said access but as far as a custom rom, no need.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app

I've had my Note about 6 weeks now. This is the first time I've came to the Note2 forum. This device is nearly perfect, for me, out of the box. I haven't found anything, yet, to make me want to root.
Sent from my Note II loaded with awesome sauce!

I did to get multi window and use titanium backup. I tried clean rom jedi and jelly thunder which im on now. All three worked great without issues. I like jelly thunder now because of the skin it runs is nice on the eyes. S-pen note taking is the main reason I have the note 2 so all these 3 roms retain full usage. Im on AT&T and have not noticed any change in battery life between the 3 roms and stock...

With a rooted installation, GPS can be turned on remotely via sms or web portal for device location and you can protect the installation itself even in the event of a full wipe. Kinda. Just an extra layer of protection.

Typically ill root a device to
flash a version of Android that isn't currently offered directly by the OEM, or simply to overclock a slower device. I'm ecstatic over this device as it is - stock.
I don't need root or some half-baked ROM with bugs.
If it doesn't improve my "user experience" then I don't want it.
Sent from my SGH-I317M using xda premium

I love flashing new roms but honestly this is the first time I have been hesitant because of how good a device runs out of the box. I can't wait till we get a 4.2 update

My 4th android phone as well and I agree with OP, the phone is unbelievable and is the first phone where I felt, "should I even bother rooting?". I only rooted it for the option to freeze system apps, use my backup from TiBu, and change my font (I hate stock font..), Multiwindow is a nice feature but not a necessity. I do like having a lot less system apps though.

i agree ...this phone is very smooth ...i did a no flash count root with no custom recovery... only so that i could have google wallet!!!!
if i didnt want wallet so bad i would not have rooted!!

Had to root and flash. Just doesn't feel right not doing so. Running Jedi romantic with the Asylum kernel and it's awesome. Have noticed extra batterydrain with the oover clock and this thing is smooth as butter

**disregard post**

I have been the biggest aosp advocates since day 1....now I dont care about cm or aokp. Lol!! I just miss my sliding toggles and weather panel from aokp

I've had mine for about a week now, coming from IOS then to the S3. I'm very impressed with it so far. I rooted mine the day after I got it and have three ROMs on it. I'm using CLEANROM 3.3 at the moment.

I unboxed mine and rooted immediately. Multi viewing is the bomb! I can watch YouTube and navigate at the same time in a split window. You gotta have it...root em baby!

It's a ROM. You can find it in the Dev section if you scroll down far enough. It's based off 2.35 and looks like ics. It's stable and fast. Someone else installed it on my phone. I didn't look for a new ROM til about a week ago.

It really does depend on your preferences. If you don't want wifi calling there is not a whole lot of difference yet. It is not like the hd2 days where there were several completely different fully functional builds to choose from and several flavors of each. Things are just beginning for the SGS2.

I been using stock rooted, but every time I flash a custom rom I end up dealing with some really annoying bugs. I also hate the fact that every time I flash a custom rom I need to setup my exchange & yahoo email again and again. any easy ways of doing this with having to set up and install every single app I use? (I usually use titanium backup)

I am in the same boat. I use 2 accounts on 2 different Exchange servers so I have to setup Touchdown every time I on install a new ROM. And I have 4 Android devices I use daily and have wiped each of them at least once this year.. I wish touchdown had a save configuration to sd card option..
I also have been wanting to install a custom rom on my s2 but keep hoping a 4.0 ICS will come out. I have it on my Asus Prime and Tab and would really like to try it on a phone..
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
The phone resetup does stink. The only way to know for sure that you are not causing your own bugs is to wipe flash the new rom and then re-setup the apps and accounts. I have had issues restoring my settings through titanium as well so I usually just redo it all manually. It is very disappointing when I get through that entire process only to find a bug I can't live with.
On the bright side I am really good at reentering my account settings, and I have greatly reduced the number of unused apps I have installed.

I personally like all the extras that touch wiz has added on THIS phone. Normally I would run pure stock but I'm happy with this phone out of the box. It helps that everything I don't need or use I can go in and disable and not worry about it running or using ram. I'm personally stock, not rooted and content. First phone ever that I didn't feel the need to root. Just my opinion.

Exactly, I already own Gnex and N7. I'm fully aware of what AOSP roms are capable of. No way I want any of those roms installed on my Note 2. I bought this because I wanted all those features that's tied into Spen. This phone would be very bad without the stock features. If I wanted stock experience, I would've waited for Nexus 4 or stayed with my Gnex. I've been rom hopping for last 2 years and now I just want something that's good enough.
I have to admit, it becomes like an addiction. I would be looking for new roms and rom updates constantly everyday.

There are cherrypicks you can do with AOKP right now that gives apparently full functionality to the S-Pen.

Naah I like the stock ROM and its features and stock Android will never have Wi-Fi calling which is something I must have with work so I'll never put it on this phone
Wifi calling is great but it's voice is a dinosaur.
I'm using the multi window rom and installed 4.2 Gapps.
Used the 4.2 launcher then switched to Go for the eye candy. Still maintain the S-pen while having 4.2 camera, gallery, ect AND sCal, sGallery and others.
Battery seems to be on par with stock Touchwiz, 40% after 15.5 hours, and 2.5hours screen time.
Still not sure how useful multi window is but I do agree Paranoid and the note2 were meant to be together.
first phone that im actually keeping stock!!! Phone runs smooth and with no problems.... aosp and aokp just seem.......pretty boring now. I do wish to have the nexus navigation on screen bar.
For the advanced users(we know who we are) AOSP will be great I can't wait. It's pointless now a days to not have AOSP it's best to start clean then add what you want free up all the space/ram and have the latest updates. I came from S3 and wanted the quad core, 5.5, and RGB s-pen can stay docked for all I care. When it comes it will be great!

I rooted my s2 as soon as I got last year. I've run many roms. My favorite was Juggs 5.0. When ICS officially came out, I Odin to stock ICS. I rooted it so I could add my 15 toggle panel back on. There are a few apps I had that required root. I'm eager to get some JellyBean on it though. I did flash the google now and google ears. Those are pretty cool.

Same here. My last phone (LG P500), which has now gone to my wife, is rooted and I like to stay tuned to developments for it as well. I expect that I'll root once I get 4.1 for my T989D (assuming it comes), then see what custom ROMs can offer beyond that. I've been reading these forums for over a month now to learn the procedures and of potential pitfalls so I don't wreck my phone when the time comes.
This phone is quite a step up from the P500, so I'm pretty happy without root for the time being.

I'm guessing by this statement, that you are a young teenager. I am an Android user and have been for quite a while. I honestly prefer to live my life and not have to tweak a phone's core OS for it to work right. It should work correctly right out of the box. Having to reset my phone several times a day or deal with bloatware is not fun. The nature of Android OS to begin with requires de-bloat/hacking.
Anyway like I said this is coming from a SGS2 user and former iPhone user as well. Only reason I don't go back is iPhones are still physically small for my liking. That and I'm on contract with T-Mobile and live in a building with poor reception (need WiFi calling)
Bought the phone ... rooted it in less than an hour xD. But, after browsing through some roms, I am in stock now just because everything works. However, I do run some rooted apps that come in handy at times.
Battery
I wanted something close to stock, so I went infamous 3.0 and it's just as stable, but the battery life is so much better than stock ICS. Would never go back.
I think its insane to deal with bloatware. Its androids biggest flaw. And theaon reason I root.

Do you lose Spen functionality and / or Spen apps such as snote , drawing ect , Sbeam or say ability to swipe your hand over the proximity sensor to see the time and date on a sleeping device? Or any other note / note 2 exclusive features in jedi x romS?

you only lose wifi calling theres a stock n7105 rom thats like the stock tmobile one except theres no wifi calling instead you get multi window and faster speeds but all the features and all bloat apps are there just like stock heres the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2027923
Had it since release but have been patiently waiting for the ota because I lost my imei on my S3 and am afraid the same thing will happen to my precious GN2.

Im holding off from rooting, cause im one of those ones who daily use ISIS, and loving every momenrlt of it!
There's something Jedi like, paying for things just by tapping my phone at the register.

I can't take it anymore! I'm sick and tired of waiting for multi view update. This is absolutely ludicrous how we were the first US carrier with the Note 2 and the last with the update. So u know what? I rooted my phone today and loaded the Jedi Rom with multi view on it. At first I was one of those that wanted to keep everything stock, as I truly love this phone. It had everything I wanted except for the multi view. Im so glad I did this! Now I have multi view with all the apps. Awesome! This has truly opened up so many more possibilities. The only downfall at the moment is wifi calling. But I can live without.
So what say u dear fellow Note 2 owners? Are u guys tired of waiting or do u have extreme patience and are happy as Is?

I'm surprised you waited so long. I waited all of 1 day to root simply to make sure all the radios and speakers in the phone worked to be sure I didn't have to exchange my phone for another.
Any way to get wifi calling with the jedi rom? Wifi is a must for me.

Jedi Master roms have wifi calling.
Jedi X roms have multi-view.
You gotta pick one :victory:

Who prefers to stay on STOCK?????

i'm curious if anyone here on XDA prefers being on stock. How come? You don't like roms? root? Just curious on what people that love to stay on stock.
Thanks.
This thread belongs in the Q&A forum, not the General forum. (Also, your '?' key seems to be stuck.)
Gary02468 your number lock seems to be stuck. Qt pie.
I am kinda in that boat
I just got my note2 and have since flashed recovery / and clean rom however I tend to like sticking stockish till I know the water temp so to speak. I tried to just do the root with out changing the counter but OTA's killed my root. Hence the twrp and clean rom...
I just cant win... heh.

I love being on stock dont get me wrong I love the clean roms and root access but since I am coming as a long term iPhone user stock feels amazing and very open to be able to do so much personalizing to the device without having to get into roms is great but I do hate the boatware lol

Nice to see an iphone user do the swap
I gotta say its awesome to see an iPhone user move on over.
I'm staying in stock to keep the slow motion video feature. And because CM 10's camera is really glitchy

On many phones I have stayed on stock for stability and feature set. In many cases when you go to another rom (especially AOSP) you lose TW features, S-Pen, etc... and in many cases I find not everything is 100%
That said the Note II development is fantastic. Many of the TW based roms give you everything you get with stock, but with more. AOSP you lose the TW feature set but it is amazingly stable and fast with a whole lot of other features.
With my S3 I could not find a single rom that I did not have problems on, but with the Note II I have a harder time deciding WHICH rom to use :good:

I agree with this guy. Even with my acer liquid mt when I rooted it and used the leaked gingerbread rom for it, the camera (which i use a lot got messed up and would over expose the pictures to white messes of garbage) and I noticed that after switching back to the normal stock rom with root, the camera would screw the video with red green and blue lines...gross I know...
And plus, just like my old ipod touch 2g (which doesnt work cuz the battery is dead. big surprise CRapple) it looked as normal as it should, but behind the curtain, the device was screaming at me to stop, every little tweak, hack, or anything I could do to the device. (Except install android on it because the project cut off 2Gs)
So what im saying is, its more fun to screw with the stock app.
Dont like the boatware?
Download a root app uninstaller.
Dont like anything about most devices?
Someone else doesnt like it either, and theyre smarter than you and figured out how to change that.
Root all stock roms.
Maybe one day, they will have an option to come rooted and unlocked.

For me 1st time I'm on stock. I like it and don't see a need for change I did root it. On my SGS the minute I go it I put a rom on it.

I did until I discovered PA battery life. Been 5 hours of fair use, mostly as a media player, connected to data. Battery is still at 84%

I hate stock as soon as another ROM handles all I want. I have a toddler. I need camera function. As soon as cm10 fixed it a week ago. I will never go back to stock again. Only 2 features I miss are page buddy and mhl. Page buddy probably can be modded in though
I love the new features they keep adding instead of stock. And I love a 150meg download instead of 700meg

The lack of mhl in cm or aokp keep me on stock based roms

The same day I purchased my Note 2, I had it rooted and has TWRP installed on it. Day 2 I was flashing roms. I guess I just really like to tinker with my phones, because where was nothing wrong with stock!
C.FLAT, "I'm staying in stock to keep the slow motion video feature. And because CM 10's camera is really glitchy"
If you are that concerned with the camera features working why not flash a ROM like Scrosler's CLEAN ROM ATT SE. It made from ATT base. Completely stock without the bloatware. Everything works perfectly and you are not at the mercy of your carrier to recieve OTA's instead your at Scroslers lol. But seriously, I would much rather get/wait for updates from a DEV here on XDA (Where I can talk directly to the DEV and or people in the thread also using the ROM) instead of waiting for carriers to take forever and you can't directly talk to the team of people who made the Official ROM . So for me if you want stock look and feel with no bloatware and is more customizable than actual stock I would go with a ROM based or made from complete stock base. Just my 2 cents
Slow motion on jedi

besides the excellent support miscom. Thanks miscom
I'm on stock cause I got no reason to be otherwise. Everything works as intended, and the so-called "bloatware" is in reality a complete non-issue.
