[Q] MHL interferes GPS signal? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to connect my note 2 to my car stereo via HDMI so I bought a cheap MHL cable for galaxy S3 assuming it works on note 2 as well.
The main purpose of doing this is to see the navigation on the car stereo screen so I don't need to attach my phone on the windscreen. However, every time I connect the MHL cable the phone loses GPS signal immediately. I have tried it at home on my TV, same problem. So does anyone have a genuine adapter from samsung can help me to test if you can get GPS signal with it connected to your TV via HDMI? If it works, I may buy a "real" samsung adapter and through that cable to the trash.

Same with S3

I have exactly the same issue with an S3 - cheapo ebay MHL, as soon as I plug in GPS signal definately drops.
My cable has a standard USB plug for power, and an HDMI plug for the screen and a micro-usb for the phone. To start with I plugged the USB power end into my cheapo £0.99 USB cigaratte adapter from china. Instantly the GPS signal disappeared completely.
I have today replaced the cheap power supply with a more expensive Gifford PowerBolt cigarette USB adapter and now I get more signal, but there is definately still a drop. For instance the phone on its own will Navigate when located near my gear stick, but will not get a signal when plugged into MHL in this location, but I can navigate successfully with the phone on the dash under the windscreen with the new power supply.
I'm wondering if this supply is somewhat better than the crap from China but still too dirty.
Does anyone have any recommendations of an adapter that will give a pure power supply.
The other issue I am having here is that although my power supply can output 1 AMP which should be sufficient to support MHL, GPS, Bluetooth etc and charge the battery, the phone is not detecting this supply as AC so only using 500MA from the supply, meaning the battery drains and eventually runs out on a long journey.
I know this is due to the middle two pins on the USB side of the micro USB on the phone not being shorted, thus telling the phone it's connected to AC and to draw the higher current, my MHL cable clearly does not have these pins connected.
Does anyone know of an MHL adapter/Dock/Cable that has full USB connectivity and MHL connectivity?
Hope this sheds some light, hopefully we can get some suggestions on good quality power sources to cure the interference and a good MHL adapter with every pin connected to the phone to allow for AC power mode with MHL.

We must be using the same product. My one comes in red cable. Actually, I really like the design cos one single cable solves all issue: charge+HDMI. If I use the genuine Samsung adapter, I have to connect both HDMI cable and USB charging cable. Now I use the aluminum foil from my kitchen to wrap all three ends of the cable and it makes the GPS signal a little bit better. I have ordered some ferrite core clips from eBay hope this can solve the problem.

Stupid GPS!!

Any update on this from your end? Did the ferrite core clips work? I have found some more info that this could be caused by the fact the HDMI do signal is grounded to the external lcd display, which in turn is grounded to the cars chassis (either through wires in a harness or directly) and then the phone is also grounded to the power side of things, and because both are grounded to different points on the car this creates ground potential difference. I don't really know too much about this but am told that this will almost definitely interfere with the signal. I have been advised to ensure the lcd display and the power cigarette adapter are grounded to the same point on the car. So I have hooked up a cigarette lighter socket behind my LCD and then grounded both the LCD power and the cigarette socket to the car radio harness at the same point then plugged in the power adapter into this new socket, unfortunately this has not made a difference. The next step I am advised is to ground them directly to the car chassis to achieve a better ground connection.
The problem still could remain due to the fact the circuitry in the in the lcd may cause resistance and cause ground potential difference regardless of both the phone power and the lcd power being grounded to the same point on the car.
I am wondering if connecting the ground of the hdmi port on the lcd directly to the chassis whether this may help?
Do you understand any of this? Does it make sense. Doing my head in!!!
If your ferrite cores helped let me know or if you have found a better MHL adapter that would also be good!!

No, unfortunately the ferrite core clips don't work. I cannot find any better solution than the aluminium foil wrap now.

any solutions?

yes, I solved this issue by replacing black 1.0 MHL with new white 2.0 MHL I got directly from Samsung.
Samsung tech told me that for 1.0 MHL it is expected to cut signal when it's in HDMI mode as TV doesn't expect any GPS

[Q] Captivate Glide Reboot when Plugging in MHL Adapter

Running SGH-I927RUXKJ5_STOCK_ROOTED. Phone reboots when plugging in a Micro USB to HDMI MHL Adapter. Upon reboot phone operates normally but no display on the external monitor. Anybody have MHL adapter working on Captivate Glide? Thanks for any help.
I ordered mine on ebay.
Phone doesn't reboot when connecting MHL cable.
But no video output to HDMI ...
I'm running Rogers ROM + Cranium kernel.
Edit :
it works !
You just need to connect the adapter to the power supply.
Just tested it with a HDMI videoprojector.
Powerpoint presentation displayed full screen.
Video file as well.
No lag at all.
Didn't check if audio was routed through HDMI (the videoprojector I used doesn't support it).

I can confirm that audio works. Anything you can see or hear on the phone goes to the TV.
I get video but no audio but that might be because of my audio setup.
I have tried it as well with a MHL adapter I bought at Monoprice and you do get audio. I have noticed sometimes it does not work though when I plug it in. I do not know why. I am wondering if the MHL adapter I bought is flaky or if Our phone is sometimes picky.
i checked the connection, video and sound work great.
No connection loss.
Connection works everytime I connect the cable.

Have you any issues with the length of your HDMI cable I found 3 feet works but 10 feet does not did not try a 6 foot as did not have 1 at the time. I think it can not be to long as it needs power from the micro USB and too long may not have enough power. Just curious on the length of your HDMI?

The cable I used was 6 feet long.
It worked great. It had no impact on video quality or sound quality.

Are you asking where to download SGH-I927UCLG9, or are you asking whether SGH-I927UCLG9 is compatible with hdmi, or what are you asking?
What makes it work?
Is the MHL functionality connected to the ROM you use, or the device? or both? I have a kitkat rom and was hoping that would make it work, but it doesn't, and didn't with the official Ice Cream Sandwich version either.
I don't have an MHL adapter, but I'd try cleaning the USB connector on the phone. The reason I say this is that my i927 would sometimes have trouble connecting to the PC by USB and often, when receiving a phone call, it'd switch to car mode, as if I had a car accessory connected.
I cleaned the connector on my phone by rubbing the contacts first with an x-acto blade, then with a piece of paper with WD40 backed by the blade and finally with another piece of paper with ethyl alcohol. Don't forget to remove the battery before trying this and be very gentle to avoid breaking the connector.

micro female/male hdmi and usb for Lapdock

I bought these on ebay. The HDMI is short but worked but when I connect both cables to lapdock, the USB is not being recognized so the keyboard/mouse is not working. I want this just to act as an extension so I can use full lapdock abilities with cables. Any idea what's going on (cable charges on plug but does not charge on lapdock)? Maybe someone has better usb cables.

why wouldn't they? Cheap build quality that doesn't include the data wires? Hell I'll be willing to splice two cables together to get our desired effect, the only problem is that cords with a female micro usb are incredibly hard to come by
So that is what you think it is? No data on the usb cables.

the only reason that is my suspicion is because there are many "charging" products out there that don't really need data. Why there would be a need for such a small charging extension cable is beyond me, but it's the only solution I can think of, but I have no way of confirming or denying it either. The ebay descriptions seem to imply that the data wires are there, but we all know how reliable ebay can be...
Another idea I had was that it might be sensing the resistance in the cable, since, if I remember correctly, that was how some think/though the car dock puts the atrix into car mode without a magnet as is/was commonly used. Again these are just ideas.
Or the cable is just so poorly made that it's defective...I honestly have no clue
Has anyone got full lapdock capabilities using extension cables? I can only get the screen working and not the mouse and keyboard.
The HDMI extender was the hard one to find. There are other micro USB extenders out there, theoretically with all wires connected....

Kind of makes me wish i hadn't hacked up my lapdock to work with the Otterbox
Where did you get your HDMI extender? I got mine from All4Cellular but it's quite short. Will have to get another HDMI one if the usb cable you recommended works.

Here's what I am thinking about doing:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/140626354628#ht_2821wt_1177 or http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-HDMI-...ultDomain_0&hash=item415eac6dc0#ht_2821wt_980
http://www.amazon.com/HDMI-Female-M...YPB4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1329854686&sr=8-2
then the hdmi cable that came with our phone:
http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Stan...QTA8/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1329854856&sr=8-8
The HDMI certainly looks like it may work but the reason I didn't buy that product from ebay a few weeks ago was because it was $50. Now miraculously, it's only $6. Maybe I'll get that if the USB cable I just bought that was suggested works a few posts back.

The HDMI cable seems to work. On the lapdock, with just the HDMI cable hooked up, it functions like it was it's an entertainment center.
The USB cord will need to be modified a little bit. I can't get it to seat right on the USB jack of the dock. I'll need to shave it down a bit as it doesn't sit down snugly.

I ordered the USB cable and experience this same problem, though I am waiting for my hdmi parts to come in (by April 6th I should have all my parts...). The cable itself works flawlessly as a micro usb extension cable when connecting it to the computer.
again as mentioned in the other thread, you want to be careful with the 5v coming out that micro hdmi port. for connecting back to your phone would be no issue, as the phone charges using this voltage, but hooking the lapdocks micro usb up to a host device probably wont appreciate the 5v coming back up the cable, where normally the usb device would be pulling power from said host, not providing it.
one suggestion is to just clip the red wire inside your micro usb cable/adapter.
btw the adapters i use do fit snugly side by side, without modification.
I've been following this thread for a little while now, and I wanted to share something I found.
I was looking at the Motorola Travel Webtop adapter. And I was curious to see whether it could be tweaked to suite our needs. I naively thought/hoped that I could flip the connectors in the device to make a small adapter to connect the Atrix to newer Lapdocks. Unfortunately as you can see in the pictures below (sorry not enough posts to link to the pictures) the two connectors are connected via a PCB not wires or a ribbon cable. Although I still have high hopes that I can de-solder the HDMI and USB connectors, and use a small length of flat ribbon cable to connect them and then re-positions the connectors in the case, to build a micro adapter to use the Atrix on the newer Lapdocks. Should this fail this will at least prevent others from making the same mistake, and solve the mystery of what's really inside the Webtop Travel adapter.
Do any one know if this Micro HDMI Cable would work for Lapdock.

Infuse 4g/ Galaxy SIII Vehicle Dock Charging Question

So I am planning on getting the Infuse dock for my S3. I want to hard-wire it in my truck so it is a clean install and wires are not everywhere. My options that I see right now are to splice in a cig lighter socket to the current one or the head unit power and then just plug in the car charger to that and run the wire behind the dash up to the mount.
I am assuming the power adapter that gets plugged into the cig lighter steps the power down from the 12v+ to the 3 or 4v to charge the phone correct? Or is this built into the part of the actual dock/mount that slides into the phone? If this is built into the dock/mount I could just run a wire straight down to the fuse panel and wire it in there without having to use a cig socket and adapter.
And another quick question....if I got a new head unit with a rear USB port I could just run a longer USB cable from the dock behind the dash to the rear input. Assuming this provides power, I could charge, use MTP, and stream pandora correct? Would this also replace Bluetooth hands free calling? I guess it would just be simple to pop the phone in the dock and have all those features and not have to worry about turning Bluetooth on and off and pairing. Plus I would assume audio quality would be better via a wired connection rather than Bluetooth.
Anyone?

The dock needs a micro usb connection, which is 5 volts. You have lots of options, from just plugging a micro usb car charger into the dock and lighter socket, to opening up that car charger and wiring direct to fuse box, to wiring a new lighter socket under the dash to the fuse box then getting the little adapter that looks like a rocket that plugs into a lighter socket and gives you a usb port. Combine that with a micro usb cable and poof. I did this last setup and it works great...

Power problem with mhl and 11 pin mhl hdmi adapter too large to fit with case

Hello,
Does anyone have a clue to this two problems?
1) I'm using the original power adapter to power up may S3 when it's connected to my TV. When I do it, I turn on WIFI and bluetooth (to use my bluetooth keyboard with touchpad). The problem is that the battery level drops a bit. Maybe 1% every three minutes.
If I connect a powerful charger (more than 1A) to the mhl adapter it will stop draining my battery?
2) Iv'e bought a 5 to 11 pin adapter to a MHL HDMI adapter. It works ok, but the adapter is too large to fit the S3 with a case. I have to remove the case every time I connect it to the TV. Anyone has tried to cut the adapter?
Thanks.

Yeah, I have both problems, and am using the official 5-to-11 pin adapter with a highly-rated 3rd-party S2 mhl cable.
1) I'm running CM10, and even though the battery icon says that it's charging, it still discharges while gaming (@min brightness). Plugging it into anything higher than 1amp doesn't help; I have a 2.1amp charger too.
2) Yep - the adapter's too wide for most cases, so I have to stretch the silicone lip of my Incipio Silicrylic case down to connect it, otherwise it just pops out.
I'll probably just buy a new 3rd-party S3 mhl-hdmi cable once they drop to $10 like the ones for the S2 have.

Note 10 Dex on Atrix Lapdock ( didn't want to hijeack the other HP Elite X3 topic )

Here's to let everyone know that dex on the Note 10 works with the old Atrix lapdock very well
In case anyone has one lying around and wants to see it in action, you would want the following accessories:
1. USB-C to HDMI adapter ( I opted for 1 with HDMI, USB 3.0 & USB-C in for power )
2. micro HDMI to HDMI cable
3. Female micro HDMI to Female micro HDMI adapter
Optional:
1. Modified USB A to micro USB cable ( more on this later )
2. Female micro USB to Female micro USB adapter
3. USB Cable + Charger to charge your phone
If all you want is to bring up dex on your lapdock, all you need are the HDMI connectors. You will want to use a Bluetooth keyboard & mouse to navigate dex and will not be able to charge your phone.
Going 1 step further, you can use a multi-function USB-C adapter with HDMI, USB OTG & USB in for power.
Here, you would modify a usb cable to give you access to the lapdock keyboard & mousepad. The lapdock was designed to be an all-in-one setup with the Atrix phone, so the 10 hour battery could also charge the Atrix. <-- That's our problem. So you will need to snip the RED wire in the usb cable to prevent the lapdock from potentially frying your phone or other devices.
Theoretically, you can charge the phone using the 2 usb ports on the back of the lapdock, but it's a trickle effect. It'll take forever and you won't be happy. I did it in a pinch & running any applications under dex still consumed my phone's battery. Plugging it into a charger, though, kept my phone @ 100%.
A big caveat here is the mousepad is NOT multitouch, so I still used my bluetooth mouse for the scroll wheel.
Here's where this becomes a lot of fun... the lapdock screen is great for running emulators in a decent window. I plugged in my shield gamepad with a usb cable into the back of my lapdock and was able to play pretty much anything I wanted to. Still plugged into an outlet kept the phone @ 100% while emulating 100%+ speeds.
The larger screen is also very nice for streaming tv/movies.
There is an option in the Dex control panel to output audio through the HDMI cable, so you aren't relying on your phone for audio.
Anyway, if you have one of these gems lying around, it's a great way to extend the value of this phone.

Annoyingly I have a Atrix lapdock but I'm not confident about the rewiring so found a good discounted HP Elite X3 lapdock. Only if someone sold the full cable and adaptor package on eBay for the Atrix
haha, it sounds more complicated than it actually is
just remember that the RED cable in the micro usb cables is power, so that's the only one that needs cutting. What I did was:
1. cut the usb cable in half
2. strip a little bit of the non-RED cables and twisted them together.
3. use electrical tape to cover each of the re-attached cables.
4. pull the red leads back onto the black sheathe
5. use electrical tape to go over the junction between the 2 halves of the cable.
All of the other components are things that are easy to order online, Amazon.

Okay I'll order cables and have a go!
Please confirm the 3rd item in your list is a micro hdmi female to micro hdmi female as elsewhere I have seen micro female to standard female. Thanks

Yes, I use a micro hdmi female to female adapter for my micro hdmi male to normal hdmi male cable.
Suggestion
My take on these DeX apps is straightforward: they’re not great. If you just use them for simple tasks like texting, copying and pasting small bits of text, or dragging and dropping a file or two, it’s fine. Pushing any harder than that is likely to be a recipe for sorrow, however, as things tend to get laggy pretty quickly. I think that’s more the fault of the desktop software than the phone’s hardware, but regardless, it’s slightly disappointing.
I don’t think that’s a reason to avoid buying the Note 10, which is still an excellent phone. But the experience did get me thinking: why did I and so many others have the objectively irrational hope that DeX would unlock new ways of interacting with your phone?
I think it’s because the idea of making a sole computer sits right next to flying cars in the “this is what the future will be” section of our collective unconsciousness.

Also if you can run DeX well on a lapdock, you may not need a Samsung Tab S6!.

I use DeX with my lapdock instead of my "real" laptop a lot of the time. My emails are on my phone, contacts are on my phone, pretty much all of the gaming apps I use are on my phone. The only time I ever really need my laptop is to play high end games that aren't ported to Android. Now, if only LoD would come out for the note10... :/
Does the Note 10 support the old 1366x768 resolution on the Atrix Lapdock? I remember getting it going on my Note 8 and it's not a supported resolution leading to really unusable low-res blocky everything on the screen.

Yup.
Okay, managed to get my old Motorola Atrix working with my Note 10+. Took a different route to the one described above as the female to female couplers are not easy to source. So I used the Rasberry PI cables for the Atrix and my Samsung Note 8 Dex hub, which was free with the Note 8. But I have to use a BT mouse. Otherwise a good solution. But I would recommend the HP Elite X3 lapdock instead if there is not much a price difference on eBay.

Hi, I'm trying to do the same. I've got a Note 10+ hooked up to my old Atrix lapdock. Note goes to a multiport adapter. From the adapter's USB-A output, I ran a cable to the lapdock's micro-USB. From the adapter's HDMI out, I ran a cable to the lapdock's mini-HDMI. With that, I can use the lapdock's screen but no keyboard or trackpad.
I ran a cable from the adapter's USB-C to one of the lapdock's rear USB ports, after snipping the red wire, but still no kb/m. The phone does charge like this though.
What have I done wrong? TIA.

The USB cable going to the micro-USB port on the lapdock needs to have the red cable snipped. What I did was to snip the red cable and pull both snipped ends back, then use a bit of electrical tape to cover that part of the wire so the snipped ends don't accidentally touch anything.
The USB cable(s) going to the rear of the lapdock are fine unmodified.
Dude/Dudette thank you so much!!! It's only because I came across your thread here that I decided to try and resurrect my trusty old lapdock, and now it works perfectly!
Thanks for replying so quickly. I modified the wrong cable - snipped the red wire on the USB cable running to the rear USB-A port. Doh!
