Wireless charging - again - Galaxy S II Accessories

Hi,
I'm new there, get Galaxy SII about a month ago. Since the beggining I'm using the Otterbox Commuter case and trying to connect charger in the total darkness makes my angry too often, I wanted to get wireless.
I know that there are some topics on xda already but none of u decided to go that way - IMO the easiest way.
I've used my Otterbox case and Powermat Wireless Charging System for Blackberry Curve 8520/9300 (u can find it at Amazon, search for B00462QB4W at really nice price ~6 pounds). Basically, u just need to take out coil and electronics from the blackberry cover with the socket (yes, that tiny socket on side of the cover) & pull out micro usb<->electronics connector. Now u can bin blackberry cover as ts useless now.
Next the worst thing, I have to cut out some more plastic on the hard part of the case and connector, to make the usb plug more in the middle(it not gonna fit as u get it) - making all fit properly was the hardest thing.
Easy - stick coil with PCB on the middle of your case, remember about socket which have to be exactly in the middle of the cutout for charger. I have used some super glue to stick this socket to case.
Now easy - X-acto knife and cut out srubber part of the case - need space for electonic - until I did it there was no chance at all to put phone into case.
Everything done - time to test wireless case for SGS2 and... it doesn't work
Quick check and the problem was between plug & socket on the case - the solution was to put some rubber from the case on the connector which isn't too thick.
I've put phone again into case, put on the Powermat plate and... it's charging finally
All that work took about 25-30 minutes.
U need just some super glue, sharp knife, sandpaper, site cutters can be also helpfull
If u don't feel too much in DIY stuff this way gonna be the best for u - No need to solder anything
Any questions? Feel free to ask

Yeah, nice work, but I wish to see video or photo because it is easy way to understand the idea my friend

DIY Vibrant Dock for $5 in materials

I got my Vibrant last week, and I needed a contest entry for a contest over at Instructables, so I hacked up a cheapy iPod dock into an awesome dock for my Vibrant.
The speakers are great for desktop use at work, despite being so cheap.
Unfortunately, I can't post a link to it ... so here are some pictures instead.
Not bad, how do you feed audio into those speakers? Using the AUX jack on the top of the Vibrant im guessing?
Yeah. It's not shown in the pictures, but that speaker set has a built-in 3.5mm cable. You just plug it into the headphone jack on the Vibrant.
NICE! I love instructables.
Is that Sugru for the bumpers? Trying to think of things to do with my samples - neat stuff.
Anyway, awesome dock. Need to keep my eyes open for a cheap dock like that.
Yeah, the Sugru is for the bumpers. I also used it to cover the rough edges of the cut plastic, and to give traction to the feet and stabilize the bottom of the speakers (they liked to rock forward when the phone was placed on the tray).
Those speakers are linked in the Instructable ... I can't post links, but if you search on Amazon for "folding speaker set" and then sort price lowest to highest, you can get those speakers for less than $5 including shipping. They have black ones too.
I happened to get the white set for free from a giveaway. The sugru was free too, so in my case, this dock cost me nothing but a USB cable.
Here -- I think this is your Instructable: http://www.instructables.com/id/Hacking-Cheap-iPhone-speakers-for-Android-Dock/
And the dock: http://amzn.com/dp/B000C8TSCQ
Might need to try making myself one of these too.
Personally, I'm hoping for a rotation mod (like CM has......it'll probably have to wait until CM6 is ported to it) that'll allow for the phone to be upside down. When that happens, I'll try to basically make this, but with a mount for the phone to actually dock into the connections.
If/When I ever get the ambition to do this, I'll definitely be using this instructable as a starting point.
THANK YOU!

Yeah, rotation upside down would be awesome. If that were the case, you'd have to lose part of the tray in this version. But I do have a set of desktop computer speakers that are USB powered ....
Nice
Where did you get the clock app?
It's called Digital Clock, you can get it on the Market. It's a free app.
I also have those speakers. I can honestly say they are very cheap but good for the money. If you don't feel like waiting for shipping just go to wal-mart, they are packaged with some of their shirts for about 7 bucks

Hey bro, what case are you using, and where did you buy it from?
I'm using the Jelly Case by Amzer ... got it at Amazon: amzn (dot) to (slash) aTMvCj since I can't post links
By the way ... voting started today at Instructables, so if you're a member there, I'd love to have the votes!
Sugru substitute
You can use Goop or other similar type instead of sugru. There is also liquid handle sold as well. You can buy it at home depot or other places like that in adhesives section. there area bunch of these poly urethane polymers. Basically all you have to do to form it is use wax paper to create the depression shape desired.
BTW. You mentioned USB speakers. I have hooked those same speakers up via usb (just strip on end and shove it where the overall + and - of the batteries would be). Take very little electrical knowledge, but I would look it up if you haven't messed around with wiring things up, but I love turning things into USB powered. Although I wanted to put a mini-usb connector on mine and have yet to do it, but just say, for those of you out there, these speakers run off USB just fine.
Well when you buy them from amazon they come with a usb power cord. I didn't get mine from amazon.

For the minimalist's out there.. car dock

I've always been a minimalist when it comes to accessories.. covers/cases/car docks. Anyway Here's a simple solution I've been using since day one with my Evo. Simple magnet holder.. Below is the link.. $5.00 . Take off your battery cover... the Metal plate the size of a quarter with adhesive sticker sticks to your battery... then put your battery cover on. Then put the magnet anywhere on your dash.. it's black and a half inch thick .. about an inch or so in diamater.. it also has an adhesive sticker. It pretty inconspicuous.. I have mine right above my radio on the dash. It's perfect.. the magnetic strength is strong enough it has NEVER fallen off.. also it's great cuz you can just turn your phone in portrait or landscape without issue. Also the softouch oem battery cover doesn't scratch from putting it off and on.. like I thought it might. So easy to just set it against the dash when getting in the car and pulling it off getting out.
http://www.amazon.com/Cellet-Retail-Packaged-Universal-Magnetic/dp/B000KNLG3M
Yeah it kinda sucks there is no power to it.. But I just have my cigarette charger there so I can just attach it when needed.
Looks really cool, I might try it out.
hey op, mind sharing a couple picture of how your phone looks with the attachment? thanks!
I too would love to see how it looks attached to your phone. If you could provide a closeup shot of the adhesive attached to the back of your phone as well as a pic of the phone sitting on your dashboard that would be great.
Thanks!
I used one like this on my old TP2 and I loved it. You only have a little piece of metal on the back of your phone and the magnet attached to your car is really strong. Thanks for the link, I might pick up another one.
I'll attach a pic tomorrow.. don't have a camera other than the one on the phone.. I'll use a friends camera tomorrow for a few shots.
and that magnet doesn't mess up navigation by throwing off the internal compass or whatever?

Looks like they must have changed the price. It says $7.13 + $2.35 shipping.
Here's someone on ebay selling these. $3.29 + $1.95 shipping, and a discount on shipping if you order more than one. I just ordered 4 of them and it came to $17.96 total with shipping.

Yeah that would be my worry... magnet that close to electronics.
I shouldn't cause any issues for the phone itself, but the compass is likely affected. The Palm Pre has little metal tabs in the case in a similar fashion and it doesn't suffer any bad side effects of being on the touchstone (magnetic connection + inductive charging) but the Pre doesn't have a compass.
Just ordered 2 of them to try out, total as under $10.00. One of the advantages is that I think I'll be able to attach my EVO to my multitude of touchstones, even if it can't charge. (yet, may do that mod if I keep the EVO)
Thanks for the tip!

Inductive Charging for the Galaxy Nexus! Palm Touchstone

I followed these instructions and it was a resounding success!
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...us-mod-palm-touchstone-without-soldering.html
One thing to note: I have the extended battery+cover and while it did technically fit under the back cover with the extended battery+cover it didn't feel right to me(it bulged out a bit) and the there was a gap on the underside of the camera from the back being pushed out.
I switched back to the regular battery and kept using the extended battery case with the inductive coil and there is no bulge or anything, worth dropping 300mah for wireless charging IMO
Edit: Shaved away more of the back grid(and trimmed some copper tape that was kind of interfering with the cover closing) and all is well with the extended battery!
I did the same thing but I also shaved off the "grid" on the back of the door.

I did a touchstone mod for my Droid Charge, but I value NFC (and the warranty) too much to do this for my GN. Nonetheless kudos to the OP cuz I definitely wanted to attempt a touchstone mod for this phone.

Nfc is intact if you follow the guide. Also I didn't notice any tripwire stickers or anything inside and their is no soldering so I so I don't see how they would know I opened it up.

Even with that big coil in the way? Nice! I may have to attempt this at some point then, though I really don't want to give up my extended battery in order to make this fit...
It does fit without the extended battery removed its just really tight and the back doesn't fit "well"(its especially hard to get all the tabs to stay in when you first put it on). Trimming away some more of the plastic may help. I'm probably going to try that at some point.
Aren't you fritned of dust comming between your screen and the phone now you've opened it like that ?

The screen stays attached to the rest of the phone, all you take off is the plastic "ring" around the phone.
Brilliant! Copper Tape is a great idea. Seems this would be pretty easy to do. I just need the Starter Kit and the copper tape....
I got this to do the similar mod, just one wire and copper tape is needed, and the warranty isn't voided, this replacement part only cost me a few $ from china.
one wire to solder the pin indicate with the white dot, and the copper tape just needed to touch the sim card holder, the two ends goes to the two connectors on the touchstone coil.
just a simply explaination.
will do the mod later on.

This looks like it would be a lot more involved,
1. It would require VERY precise soldering job to the back of the USB. This is way beyond most people's abilities.
2. It requires you to remove the circuit board from the screen whereas the other method does not.
On the other hand your method probably isn't capped at 500maH
it's a straight forward take apart, even if i mess up the part, it goes into the bin, that why i got an extra piece.
just a blob of solder on the usb and two on the touchstone coil, if you search the net, it's the same method that was used on the i9000, even the usb will work and does not affect any function of the phone.
I modded mine with the Palm/touchstone mod. When I first did the install, I was getting the bulge as mentioned.. after shaving down the back cover and doing some repositioning - it fits fine. No bulge, no extra pressure.. you wouldn't even know it was there.
Also installed the stronger magnets. This way, I installed the touchstone in my car as a car dock and used tasker to launch car home when docked.
Probably the best mod I've ever done. Very simple if you follow the instructions in the link.

They don't seem to on mine. Also, order a few extra magnets because they trend to break if you drop them.

Why does this have to go into the phone and void the warranty. Personally I use a case without cutouts for the pogo pins so i can just attach the tape to the pogo pins right?

[Q] Magnetic fridge mount?

I'm getting a free Galaxy Tab 3 as a promotion from Time Warner Cable (which I assume is the 7" version based on the statement on their website that says "$199 value") and thought it would be kind of cool to use it for recipes. The idea is that I would use Pepperplate, and use Smart App Protector to keep the screen on while Pepperplate is open. The part I haven't decide on is where to put it. At this point, the most practical thing seems to be to get a case that has strong magnets fastened to the back, which could remain on the tablet at all times, and when I want to use it to cook with I could just slap it on the fridge. But I haven't been able to find any cases that seem to fit this need. Does anyone have any suggestions for this? Or suggestions for a case that may be ideal to Gorilla Glue some neodymium magnets too?
The under-the-counter mounts don't seem to be a good solution because I would like this to be portable when it needs to be. Also, I'd love to hear if anyone has any suggestions on how to implement some method of charging while it's on the fridge, though this is not too important to me and is more of a curiosity than anything else. I was thinking perhaps if the tablet is capable of wireless charging, having magnets around the edge and a wireless charging base on the fridge that would go in the center, then trying to find a way to run the cord along the edge of the fridge door. And if it has NFC (which unfortunately it looks like it may not) perhaps I could have a tag on the fridge that would trigger Pepperplate to launch.
This is all just for fun, but it would be really neat to have some sort of set up where I could just slap the tablet on the fridge and have it do its thing. The biggest priority is finding a case that would be magnetic or easily modified to be magnetic. Any input is welcome. Thanks!

here's how I would do it...
Get yourself a (or 2) cheap TPU cases. I have one called BoxWave. 5-6 bucks.... Ebay or Amazon
A semi flexible stiff rubber (TPU) case that the Tab gets fitted into..just like the supersoft silicone cases, but the TPU material is alot stiffer, but still flexible enough to get it on and off your tab easily..
then get peel and stick magnet strips for any hardware store..Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, True Value, Ace... wherever
Stick the magnets to the TPU case and let them set up for 24 hours before putting the Tab in it and putting weight on it..
if youre scared..
Gorrilia glue will work too.. remember.. it's just a cheap case and worth the sacrifice..
Then there ya go!! slip the Tab into the case and stick the Tab on the Fridge!!!
Good luck and be sure to post Pictures of your success!!

That sounds like a fantastic way to do it. I was very uneasy about magnets because of two things: the first is that I was afraid they would separate and the other is that I thought I'd need magnets so strong they may damage the tablet. Gorilla gluing them to a case is perfect because it's strong, doesn't damage the tablet, and doesn't require ridiculously strong magnets like I'd need if I had something like a metal plate inside the tablet that the magnets would need to stick to. I wish I'd seen this post a few days ago, because as it turns out I have already started another plan, which I've already ordered the parts for, but I'm strongly considering cancelling my order to give your method a try. The one thing that makes me hesitate is that with the new plan, I've come up with a way to hide the cord, whereas I was unable to think of a way to do this when it's on the fridge.
Here's what I put together: I have a cabinet directly on the left of my stove (as opposed to the fridge which is directly to the right of it). The cabinet starts about a foot and a half off the ground and comes up to about my neck. The idea is to mount it on the cabinet door and hide the cord in the cabinet, and the specifics are as follows. There's no power source inside the cabinet, so I was going to drill an extension cord sized hole in the back base of the cabinet to slip an extension cord into. Then I'd drill another (smaller) hole in the door for the micro USB end of the charging cable. Next, I'd put the power cable together, and it consists of 3 parts. The extension cord, a USB-to-power adapter, and a micro USB to USB flat cable that I've orderd. I ordered a flat one so it can go behind the tablet without being very visible. So once I have cleared a path for the cord and put it together, I'll run the cord from the wall to the hole in the door, and staple it along the edges everywhere in between so it's not in the way. Finally, I'll mount a TPU case on the top part of the door by drilling holes and screwing it in, securing it with hex fasteners on the other side of the door. I've included a simple MS Paint rough draft of what the finished product will look like.
The idea is that it will be mounted on the door, the cords won't be visible, and it will always be connected to a power source (unless I remove it temporarily). I'm not too worried about frying the battery since there are not many instances that would require me to remove it from power so as to rely on the battery. I hate to be so OCD but visible cords are a bit of a bother to me. However, if you have any ideas as to how I may hide them with the method you mentioned I'd be happy to hear them since your method sounds far easier and less destructive, and probably an all around better option if it weren't for those pesky cords! Also, since my tablet hasn't arrived yet I can't check this for myself: (if you have the same tablet) does the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 have NFC capabilities? I couldn't find anything saying it did, but I couldn't find anything saying it didn't either. If so, I'd put an NFC sticker on the inside of the case and create a set of tasks in Tasker so that when I put it in its home it goes into "Kitchen Mode". Anyway, thanks for all your help and suggestions, and whatever I end up doing I will definitely post a few pics to show it off!

Yes.. I can see that fastening a tpu case to the cabinet door would work out good... and hiding your cord is a neet way too... too bad that your cabinet door will have to have a huge hole it it behind the Tab...
Maybe mount the TPU closer to the edge and run the Micro USB out of the tab, and a U-turn BEHIND the cabinet door instead of thru it.. your tab will be off center from the cabinet door... but and now remember... it's stuck there. when you pull your tab out.. you'll have an empty TPU case with 4 screws hanging on your cabinet door.
Ive seen stick on magnet strips here about 1"X4".. peel and stick.... I think 4 of those on a TPU case... perfect.. cause you can snatch it off the fridge anytime. carry it away.. stick it to the stove hood..... anywhere.... screwing to a door is semi permanant.. .. Ill go so far as to suggest 2 TPU's... one magnets on the back.. and 1 screwed to the cabinet door.
Subscribe to this thread and it will notify you of replies immediately....
good luck.. keep the ideas comming...
by the way... I thought we were talking about the 8 inch tab3 not the 7,,,,, my bad... I have an 8 incher

I think 4 of those on a TPU case... perfect.. cause you can snatch it off the fridge anytime. carry it away.. stick it to the stove hood..... anywhere.... screwing to a door is semi permanant.. .. Ill go so far as to suggest 2 TPU's... one magnets on the back.. and 1 screwed to the cabinet door.

good luck.. keep the ideas comming...
by the way... I thought we were talking about the 8 inch tab3 not the 7,,,,, my bad... I have an 8 incher

I do like the fact that your way doesn't involve destroying parts of my kitchen! I'm thinking now that if I find a way to fasten the USB cable to the fridge in a semi-permanent manner it may not be so bad... The cord is white, like the fridge, and with it being flat it may be less noticeable. I wonder how it would hold up with the door being open and closed, as in whether or not it would slide/fall from the repeated movement... This is going to be a tougher decision than I initially thought! At least there's time to figure it out, the tablet won't be here for like 2 months.

Please do post results! Sorry I didn't see the reply again, I did subscribe to the thread but I must have missed the email... now it's been a while! Anyway, the 2 month period is just one of the hoops TWC makes you go through to get something free. It will be the 7 inch tablet. I am actually on the phone with them now trying to get them to honor their agreement and it's like pulling teeth. But they are either going to give me a tablet or I'm not going to pay my bill for the next 3 months to make up the difference and I'll buy my own damn tablet! Anyway, I intend to post photos when it's done. I've got everything set up, I just need a table to go in the TPU case.
UPDATE: Just got off the phone with TWC after an hour and 36 minutes, and they told me that they are going to "pass my details to the correct department" and I'd get a call within "3-4 days". Funny, as I pointed out, that was the same thing they told me 8 days ago, after another equally long phone conversation. Anyway, to sum it up they are giving me a credit equal in value to the tablet and I'm debating between the Galaxy Tab 3 (7 inch), which was what the promotion originally offered, or the 2013 Nexus 7. The Nexus has gotten great reviews, is there anything about the Galaxy Tab that you'd recommend over the Nexus? I know I'm kind of getting off track here but I'm just curious.

well that looks pretty cool, now that sits right in the middle of your cabinet door? How did you mount the case to the door, I don't see any screws on the backside of the case that went through the cabinet door with I'm guessing nuts on the other side..I will look for the magnets today at to hardware stores on the way home from work

Thanks! It's actually a flip-cover case, so the screws are in the cover part, which is flipped over behind it. then I drilled a small hole for the micro USB cable and ran that along the edge of the inside of the cabinet. Now that I'm debating getting a Nexus 7 instead (TWC just gave me a credit to my account in the amount of the tablet, so I have up to $200 to go toward any tablet I want at this point) I'm considering using a wireless charging pad so all I have to do is place the tablet in the case, though not sure if that would work through a case. Still playing with ideas, and if I do the Nexus 7 then I'll need a new case, but thankfully, they're cheap!

Ok... lets try this...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jD25aOvicI&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Now, my fridge finish is textured and not smooth. Kind of like a course orange peel,
So I think the grip was not as strong as if it were a smooth surface. If I were to keep this, I would go with a 1 inch wide magnet instead of a half inch which was $1.59 for 30 inches X 1/2".
Good luck!

Looks great! When you say the grip isn't as strong, I'm wondering, did it slide at all when you opened and shut the door? I didn't see any movement the first time you shut the fridge door and it didn't seem to be in a noticeably different location so I couldn't tell if it did, but that's my primary concern with the magnet method, so if it stays in place then that looks like a perfect solution.
On another topic, what app are you using for the dialer? As I understand it (correct me if I'm wrong), the tablet itself does not come with a dialer, and that was something I was planning on looking into down the road - particularly one that can be used with Google Voice. So my questions are 1) what is the name of the app and 2) does it allow Google Voice capabilities? I know that Google Voice is going to disable third party apps that use its service in a few months, but in the mean time it would be cool to use it to make calls.
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to make the video, and I really like how you have it set up.

Like I said that my fridge has a textured finish, so the mags were not getting a solid grip.
It DID stay up there. I even shut the fridge door hard once to test it, but, I'm suspicious, so IF,
IF, I were to do this set up on MY fridge, I would double up on the mag area. & yes, It did NOT move when I had it, just that I wouldnt do it full time without doubling up on the mag area..
My SM-T315 8" Tab came with the Samsung dialer installed.. ya see... It's actually an 8 inch galaxy phone.
Does everything the phones do just in a larger screen.
It has a sim card slot... I take the sim out of my smaller phone (ATT) and slide the sim into the tab 3 8" and BAM!!! The tab is now my phone...
Phone , data plan, mms, everything now comes to the tab with my same number. No need for google voice.
it cost a bit more than the wifi only ones sold at the brick and mortars here in the USA, but, I like the phone and mms features.
good luck

That's nice that it works as a phone out of the box. I use Google Voice as my primary number, which is a pain sometimes, but I like the fact that I can answer it from my mobile, my home phone and my computer, and when I call out from any of those it also shows the Google Voice number on caller ID to the person I'm calling (for the home phone, this is through Ooma Telo). Wish I could have the tablet work the same way in case it's closer when the phone rings. Did you have to order that through a special online service, or can you find that version on Amazon?

Maybe not Amazon.. I know they had the 311 which is the same but NON-LTE.... E bay has a bunch..
I got mine and all my international stuff from Negri Electronics. They operate in Las Vegas. Very good store and after the sale customer relations.
good luck deciding now.

I agree that removable storage is nice, but I wouldn't say it's a deal breaker for me because of the fact that I can get something like a Meenova to easily add more storage if I need to. At this point I'm leaning toward the Nexus because for this purpose, wireless charging capability seems more beneficial than removable storage simply due to the fact that it would be cool to not have a cord showing when it's mounted, and to not have to plug it/unplug it every time I want to take it down for a bit. Of course, the flip side is that instead of seeing a cord, I'd see the Meenova sticking out of it, but that doesn't seem as bad since I probably wouldn't need to have one in there all the time. Either way, I do appreciate the suggestion and I will certainly take into account the capability for removable storage when making my choice. Thanks!

Turns out they are backordered. In order to replace it, you need some needlenose pliers to pull the anchor out of the phone part. If you just rip it, you likely won't be able add a new one.

It's also very easy to replace the cover if you just undo the screws on the lower half of the phone and gently lift that part of the back slightly off. Just enough to have the space to fit in your new cover!

I haven't purchased extras yet but I can't see why the eBay ones wouldn't work.
I don't know of videos specifically for this but you can check out videos of basic S4 Active disassembling to see where the screws are etc. It's a very minor job.
Tonight I tried forcing one into place with an eyeglass screwdriver and it worked great, so I guess you don't even have to unscrew the back of the phone! You learn something every day

Wow that's very interesting. I just found that if I push the port in a certain way it closes fully. I shove the right side in all the way and then push up on the part closest to the screen and its very secure.

How long are you guys finding that your cover lasted for before needing to be replaced? I've had mine for over 2 years and I haven't had any problems with it.
Mine lasted for about 2.5 years (was slowly falling off, then ripped) the first branch of covers (same as you can find by the links in the first post) that has gray rubber insert was somewhat defective, it can be ripped easily and not closing securely all the time, so Samsung actually replaces them in service centers, I know guy who took his phone to service with faulty display and they replaced display and cover to one similar to Galaxy S5 with flat white rubber insert. I got new one from service for about 5$ and this is a newer one (same as S5's) and to replace it, you just need to undo bottom screws, then easily with fingernail you can lift up back of the phone just a little bit, and old cover (just a piece of it in my case) will fall off, so you just need to put the new one and put button screws back (decorative, round plastic bits you can take off with needle, there are tiny groove for it).

Can you post some photos of it? I'm wondering what's so much better about the new ones. I've had mine for 2.5 years as well and haven't seen any signs of wear and tear yet.
Well, first of all, the rubber base is secured better on the plastic cover itself so rubber won't gonna rip off as easy (mine riped off from plastic about a year ago, and now rubber itsetf brake) if you happy with yours, thats good because as for me I didn't had another choise. Before installing new cover I took pictures of new and old, here they are.
I know this probably a dead link, but is the port door made of rubber or hard plastic? It seems to be made of hard plastic.
