[Q] connect wifi tether in infrastructure mode vs ad-hoc. Can it be done (yet)? - Sprint LG Optimus G

After taking a trip to the darkside for a year or so (IFail), I decided to rejoin the force by purchasing the Optimus G, mainly for wifi-tethering and more control over my actual phone. I can connect my phone just fine to my Mac (the Optimus appears under devices in airport), but cannot get my Kindle, nor my X-Box to connect to the wifi. Is this an ad-hoc vs. infrastructure connection issue?

Can anybody help with this issue?

Not sure I can help with your ways, but Wireless Tether, from the Playstore, works good for me. You have to have root. Settings are; ics/jb generic, wlan0.

Most wireless tether apps use ad-hoc, which only works for PCs and PSPs it seems like. The built in version you pay for works on some phones like my old evo, but we hack to unlock that first to not pay. I will check it out when I get the chance and see if I can do the same thing.

Wireless modem

I know tethering you can either pay for or root your phone, but I just bought a laptop and broke the external wireless card, are there any 3rd party apps available so that I can connect my evo to my pc via usb and use my evos wifi too connect my laptop to the internet through my wireless router at home? Any feedback Is appreciated.

you can use pdanet its free on the market. you just install it on your phone and then on your computer. it works on windows and mac.
running from the pc now...thank you boss

I just use the built in usb tethering. It supports connecting to wifi. My school's network is acting up and my laptop wouldn't register properly. Using my Froyo Evo, I just turned on USB tethering while connected to wifi and got great wireless speeds. Best option in my opinion.
Didn't work without pdanet.....pc would recognize phone but not its ability to use it for its wifi connection. Elaborate?

SGS2 & PS3: Compatible?

I'm trying to watch Netflix on my PS3 via Epic 4G Touch using Wifi Tether, but the Playstation doesn't see my rooted S2 when searching for connections. When trying this with my EVO 3D, the Playstation sees it just fine. In fact I'd use the EVO except for the fact I can't maintain a good enough 4G connection to stream from it while my S2 is able to get a stronger, more consistent 4G connection. Is there any way to setup a wireless connection between the PS3 & S2 using Android Tether, Wifi Tether, or the like for a 4G connection using only the phone (no router) as the hotspot? I can connect to other devices without issue. Any help is appreciated.
TIA!

Wifi tether uses an ad-hoc connection which the ps3 will not connect to. As far as I know, none of the wifi applications will tether using 4G and infrastructure. The hot spot hack uses a infrastructure connection and will connect to the ps3, but is only 3G for now.

Thanks demonlordoftheround.
Hmm. Yes as you said, I can wireless tether the PS3 over 3G (too slow here) with my S2, just not 4G. So I'm guessing this is a hardware limitation on my ET4G as opposed to the EVO then? Because I am able to use Wireless Tether with a 4G signal from my EVO to the Playstation. The EVO just won't maintain the 4G connection like the Samsung. Is this something a future software/firmware update could fix on the PS3 side? I'm trying to decide if I should continue my Netflix subscription or not as this is my only internet connection.

The other way you can do this is by using a laptop. Simply go to the connections settings on your laptop and bridge them. Then just tether ur phone to the laptop and plug the ethernet cable from pc to ps3. There is a youtube video on how to do this.

That might work using the wired tether google app. Wired tether works on 4G. I had tried to do this once but couldn't get the bridged connection to work. Don't have the ps3 anymore so I never followed up.

Maybe a difference in xbox and ps3, but I can tether via wireless tether to my xbox using 4g. I get Netflix, hulu, and can play games online with no problem. Wireless tether is basically the same as wifi tether with using ad-hoc. Wireless tether isn't in the market though, its been blocked by all of the carriers. Its in the blackmart app.

Yes. Bridge your connection to a PC then pass-thru to ps3 with cat5/Ethernet cable. E4GT... it only takes a few minutes & you'll be able to tether on 4g connection!

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Will definitely be trying this. One question: can I still use the hotspot from my phone to wirelessly tether the bridged laptop and then ethernet out from the laptop to the PS? I currently have no issues when connecting wirelessly to the laptop from the GS2 while on 4G. The reason I ask is because I can only get the 4G signal with the phone sitting on a window sill and the PS3 & TV aren't even close to it.

Yes. I'd used pdanet (wired tether for more consistency w/ online gaming ) but it'll work with your current set up.

Or you should grab the new sprint hotspot hack (thanks maddoggin) http://forums.acsyndicate.net/showt...L13-Deodex-Odex-Hotspot-Mod?p=15886#post15886
Now 4G works... The standard WI~FI tether app is only adhoc but the hack sprint hotspot is infrastructure so ps3 will recognize it!

Nice find DaMV-P! You (& maddoggin) just made my day! I've been hoping someone could get our native tethering to work with 4G. This totally resolves all my issues. :-D
Thank you so much!

WiFi Tether (GSM)

I love the WIFI tether feature but what I don't love is how I can't view any basic statistics what so ever. Things like who's connected, the amount of data sent and received etc would also be nice. I've used apps like Barnacle in the past on other devices but I would like to stick to the native app. Does anyone know of a way to view the status of the connections made to your AP?

Tethering question

Hey everyone, just wondering is there is a way to tether via USB using wifi as the source of internet?
Sent from my Incredible 2 using xda app-developers app
Yes there is. It's built into the system settings (At least for ICS).
Sent from my vivow using xda app-developers app
It's called internet pass through I think.

clarification
Do you mean for the PC to tether though the andriod? if that is the case you may need to use something like EasyTether.
Yea, I want to hook a PC up that doesn't have wireless capabilities so I can use wifi on it. I'm running AOKP, I haven't tried to hook it up yet to see if it comes with this rom.

OK just an update, hooked my phone up to my PC and hit USB tether at the settings UI is force closing
EDIT: Using Easy Tether, I have internet but its intermittent and a little slow, but its a start.

There is an app on the Play Store called "Open Garden." It enables Wi-fi tethering on 3G or Wi-Fi for Free.
Before I had Ice Cream Sandwich and was rooted, I always used PDANet, it works great on both Mac and PC! If it isn't in the Play Store anymore, i'm sure you could find the .apk somewhere online. Best of luck!

Best Tether app (non root)

Hello i have a sprint galaxy s III and i was wondering if anyone has had success tethering a sprint phone to the nexus 7? My phone is not rooted, i would like to keep it that way if at all possible. I use FoxFi and PDA Net and it does connect to my Nexus 7, but for internet only. Google play will not update apps, facebook will not work, Netflix won't work, ect. I tried open garden, FoxFi (by itself), PDA Net (by itself) and nothing else connects. What is everyone else using??? Thanks in advanced!
Well I`m using foxfi and it works very well for me. I`m living in uk.

I tried out foxfi today for the first time. It seems pretty good, but I would like to here others suggestions as well.

That doesn't really answer the OP's post though. FoxFi doesn't look like a real internet connection to all apps though. Is there another app that does any better?

If I understand this right your wanting to connect your N7 to the internet via your G3, if so cannot you just use the mobile access point on the phone, i have the galaxy s and my sister has the S2, both have this options in the settings and once set up and turned on acts just like a wireless router, select it and enter the password on your N7 and your away.. works well on mine

The same on my S3 Nexus Combo, great having unlimited data and unlimited tethering data

I've never tried it, but how about PDAnet?
Foxfi Wifi Hotspot no longer works on my nonrooted Droid Bionic. I can only tether via blueetooth, which doesn't allow all of my apps to work correctly. Does anyone know of a Foxfi alternative?
My Foxfi works fine on droid x to my nexus 7. I don't know what you're talking about not a real connection....
Check it out though, foxfi is definitely awesome.
