OT. Help me pick a tablet. - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hi all. It's not often that I start a thread around here. Feel free to keep this going for other people looking to spend their gift cards.
So I am between 2 tabs: Nexus 7 and Galaxy 2 7.0.
From what I'm reading, it looks like the specs are a little better on the Nexus but it's really hard to be a deal I found on a refurb Galaxy tab on Amazon ($170).
The lack of expandable storage and HDMI concern me a little with the Nexus but all reports seen to indicate that it's just an incredible device. Plus if I get the Galaxy tab i kind of feel like I'm just getting a bigger version of this phone.... though it does have official cm support.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance for your help with my 1st world problem.

I picked myself up a galaxy 2 7.0 refurb and I'm liking it. Just fyi, look at walmart online because they have it for $150 refurbish. Just check everyday because they restock often. I was thinking about the nexus 7 but two thing hold me off on it: the lift screen problem and the price.

What is the lift screen issue?

What are your thoughts on only having 16gb? I would plan on having a couple bigger games on it but wouldn't carry music or many movies.

You can pick up a moto Xoom for $219 on N1 wireless XD it has 32 GB of storage plus an SD card slot and a 10.1 inch display

Can't help with those choices but I have to gloat a bit...got an ASUS TF700 with the keyboard and am loving it!

I have the 7.0 plus tab and I love it. I bought my dad the nexus 7 16 gig and having played with it its a top notch device. If I were to buy a device from your choices I would pick the nexus but I would get the 32 gig one. I just believe you can never have enough memory. But I do love having an memory card and it makes everything so much easier. You can't go wrong with either device. I think it comes down to personal preference.

Galaxy note 10 since it has mulitwindow

I jist got 2 galaxy tab 2 10.1 for me and my oldest son for xmas. I have to say its a great tab for the money I like it alot better than my nexus 7 due to size and my moms nexus 10 which is the same size but is missing a few features in lieu of bigger proc and ram. Which on the tablet you dont notice really since theres not a lot of phone related stuff running in the background. They also have sd slots for expansion
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2

It's just my personal experience. I had the Tab 2 7.0 for about 5 months and now I have the nexus 7 since day 1. I have it mainly for the kids whether playing games or watching movies. I rarely use it for some reading and browsing.
I have to say there is no comparison. Nexus 7 is a LOT better. The screen is way better whether the specs, visibility, brightness or the dirt and finger print collection. Also, the speed and responsiveness. It is a lot faster and the touch is more accurate and responsive.
The tab 2 is better in terms of extra hardware. A microSD slot, a back camera and an HDMI port. So, if you can get past these, you have to get the Nexus.
I have 4 tablets now (well, the HP is now broken) and I never used the back camera except for testing purposes. Another thing is I never ran out of space. Of course this is very subjective. You can have a couple of 2GB games and that would clutter the space. Also, I have a Google TV and a Wii and they are my entertainment center (though not something to brag about).
So, for me, I would say: Definitely go with the nexus.
I never used a Motorola product, so I don't know anything about it. I just like the 7 inches size better than the 10 inches. It is lighter, easier to handle and the battery usually lasts better.
Hope this helps...

My gt2 10.1 is lighter than my kindle fire and barely different from my nexus 7. Having gps on it is nice tho makes turn by turn easy as hell to use while driving since I dont have to strain to see it. Plus the IR blaster is great my tablet now controls my tv, pc and satellite set top box. I dont use my nexus 7 much anymore between my note 2 and gt2 its become obsolete.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2

The Nexus 7 without a doubt. I have the 16GB version and I love it. I have used other tablets (Herotab C8, Asus TF 101) and have handled many others, and without a doubt the Nexus 7 is without a doubt the best I have used. Clean, easy to modify, and most of the development work is pretty stable. It is by far the best one going.

Thanks everyone. I just ordered the nexus 7 32gb from Amazon for $240 including a case. Now is a good time to buy.
Decided that hardware and probably 2 years of updates was most important. Can't wait to play Vice City on this thing!

Yes my toddler has a rooted overclocked tab!! As I used them a bit a 7 in tablet is perfect. 10 inch tabs are big and midas well get laptop out. 7 inch tabs fit in back pocket. Note 2 replace nexus 7?

Hey all I'm looking at replacing my s3 and N7 with a Note 2. I don't have a problem with the size for a phone but is it big enough to replace a N7? I know this is really opinion based so that's all I'm looking for. I pretty much just use my N7 for watching YouTube and I don't want to watch it and feel like I have to strain if that male sense. Any opinions welcome thanks!
Sent from my SCH-I535
Hi. I think the best way to answer your question is that you have to try it out for yourself. Go to a shop and try an actual note 2 out. Screen size and eye strain are relative factors depending on the person and I consider it as a personal preference. Though I think the note 2 screen is big enough not to cause eye strain.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
I have both and I would say the You Tube and Netflix experience is better on the Nexus 7. Netflix is great on the Nexus 7 IMHO.
You could manage on the Note 2, but it is just not quite big enough for me.
After I have purchased my original note 1 about a year ago, I have never bothered with any 7 inch tabs

Maybe swap my ageing MBA for a Surface later on if that's convincing enough though.

Personally I don't think its big enough to replace the N7, it certainly won't be replacing mine.

Will you ever own a "normal" sized phone again?

This may be a repost, but if you don't feel like repeating... Don't lol.
I've been with my Note 2 for about 3 weeks now and this is truly one of the best "first experiences" with a mobile device I've had. I've been rocking a screen in my pocket since the old Windows "Palm top" days. Remember those Windows CE devices that looked like tiny laptops? I Even had a compact flash 56k modem (maybe 28.8?). Now that was the sh*t.
So yeah maybe some of the "first" mobile devices back then did blow me away, but man I freakin love this phone!
I picked up and played with my Evo3D and I just dont think I could ever go back. Holding a "normal" sized phone just feels inferior. Not to mention having the Spen. I "grew up" using a stylus so having it is just a huge bonus. Granted a good multitouch, capacitive touch screen is great and practically makes a stylus unnecessary. It's still great to have it when you want it.
So how about you? Can you go back to a 4.0-4.5 inch screen? Or are you a permanent convert?
Sent from my Galaxy Note 2 using Tapatalk 2
5.5" seems like the sweet spot to me. I'm with you on the Evo 3D, I pick mine up now and it looks kinda pathetic next to the Note II. :victory:

Yeah I could never go smaller. You definitely get very spoiled by the size. My girls 4s looks so pathetic next to this. I thought my epic touch was huge but even that seems like a toy now. I was going to wait for the gs4 but I'm so happy I made my move to this device. And by the looks of it that device is only going to be a 1.8ghz quad core with no Spen and smaller anyway so I don't think I'm going to regret not waiting lol! I've been at 1.8 since the day I bought it.

I dont think I could go back to a 4.5 or 4.75 screen. I could see myself trying out the GS4 just because it should have a 5" screen. I love my Note and the screen. I don't think I could go smaller but if I had to, a 5" screen would be my limit. And the only reason I would consider that is because occasionally the Note does not fit my shirt pockets lol.

I wouldnt ever be able to go back to a "normal" sized phone. My husband says the phone is too big, but I dont even notice it. I love having the large screen to watch movies on and take videos with.
I'm hooked on phablets I can't help but look at my EVO3d with contempt. My next phone will likely be the Note 3.
* I'm Rick James, *****! *
nope 5.5 is perfect!
I don't think I can.. I still keep my Evo LTE as a back up and from time to time I activate it to play with some roms and use it for a day or two and I can't wait to use the Note 2 again lol
I was an iPhone lover all the way. Got a new one every 2 years and was just now waiting for the next one to come out and I was going to buy it but then I saw the NOTE and in 5 seconds I had made up my mind to buy it and sell the iPhone. Bear in mind it wasn't JUST an iphone for I have a Macbook Pro, Apple TV, iPod docs, and so on..........but it was gone in a flash and I could never buy a phone smaller than this one, the Note 2. I also picked up a Note 1 I got brand new in the box, unopened for only $125 and threw it on another plan.
I do have an S3 which is almost as big but I am here just to find out how to root it and then I am going to sell it on a forum in my home city although its a great phone, its not as big as the note so i wouldn't keep it
Yes, its got to be a big screen all the way

New Nexus for the win :good:
For 70 dollars less for the 16G version, it's a souped up version of last year's Nexus 7. Basically older N7 with better battery life, better screen (not resolution), additional camera, microSD, stereo speakers, but runs slightly slower. I'm very tempted but will wait until CM10 is ported over to it.
I don't intend to ever buy another non-Nexus Android device. Just my opinion, but the developer communities are so much better for Nexus devices, along with fast updates, true Android experience, etc.
I ended up buying a new N7 this morning - I just couldn't help myself.
Though for only $150 the Memo HD 7 still looks like a hell of a bargain for the features it offers.

No it isn't. It is a piece of junk from what I've read. Great tab for a child or wife to serve a single purpose but not as a daily driver. The oddball SoC is not very good.

Nexus because of the screen
Besides it's processor, what else concerns me are the edges of the Memo Pad 7 HD. Apparently where the back and front halves meet along the edges the back half plastic is 1cm wider making a sharp edge on the sides that dig into your fingers. Reviewers complain about this being uncomfortable.
I learned a long time ago (well 2 and a half years to be exact) that Nexus is the only way to go.
Yea my Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 was stuck at gingerbread. It recently got CM10 and barely. My only non nexus phone was a LG G2x, nuff said.

Nexus 7 vs nexus 5

Hi,
So I have a nexus 5 and love it. I've just been given a few hundred pounds bonus at work to spend on "gadgets" and can't really think of anything to buy, and I've always thought about getting a tablet.
I just wanted to ask, since I have a nexus 5 is there much point? The only benefits I can see are bigger screen, longer battery life and probably better for playing games and watching movies on. Is there any other benefit to having a nexus 7? Does anyone here own both and regret/recommend it?
Thanks in advance,
Jack

I own both plus a stay at home iPad 4. I get great use out of all of these devices.
Have both, the N7 WiFi version. The N7 does everything but phone calls much more conveniently when I'm at home because of the larger screen and extended battery life. If you're thinking about getting an iPad I'd recommend he N7. I had an iPad and replaced it with the N7 and have no regrets whatsoever.
I had a G'Nex + N7 2012 for the last year. Got my N5 last week and it made my N7 feel so sluggish I started thinking about getting the 2013 N7 with free shipping + $25 Google play credit. On black Friday I saw 32GB N7 on sale for $225 so figured I'd go for it. While it's still not as crazy fast as the N5 it's a nice upgrade over the old N7, and while I use my phone when I'm mobile, when I'm laying in bed or sitting at a desk I prefer the larger screen for other than phone purposes.
So yes, it's great owning both.

End of nexus 7?

Noticing that Google Play is selling out their nexus 7's and Asus is offering the bonus promotion for the nexus 7 along with other stores like Walmart dropping the price dramatically does it mean its on its way out? I know there are posts about the nexus 8"flounder" and such do you think its the end for the tablet? Should I pick one up now or wait for the n8? Walmart dropped the price in store to $215 for the 32gb version.

Is there any reason why it wouldn't be discontinued?
It's almost time for the summer refresh of android and a medium sized nexus tablet.
Do you want a 8" tab if rumors are accurate?
Is the potential release of android a64 a factor?
Do you want a HTC or ASUS designed device?
The 2013 N7 is nearing a year old, it has 2 major updates left expected in it's lifetime, with the summer one being one of them.
The 2014 N7/8 will definitely be more expensive as long as stock doesnt run out on the 2013 N7
(current price vs price of leftovers after release)
I would definitely wait on the 8! It's just around the corner and it will be worth the updated hardware and hopefully screen size bump.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I am not looking forward to an 8" screen. Those are not as good for HD movie viewing. Also the 7" is compact enough to be very portable. I would jump at a 2014 Nexus but not sure I would if it's 8". Time will tell but I need portable to be able to take it with me on Mass Casualty Incidents and Search and Rescue deployments.

I find 7" a bit too small and 10" a bit too big. 8" should be just right. If HTC is making it, that's just icing on the cake. If it's not too expensive I'll probably get one for my wife.
I think I would be happy with an 8" tablet since I it would be a 'nicer' jump in size from 5" phone. On the other hand it would stretch carrying/holding it one handed.

Right??? I get **** all the time by people who use giant tablets and I gotta say... Compensate much? Lol really though, this thing has more than enough power if taken care of, can take quite the beating as far as my uses go annnd it fits in your pocket in a pinch. My favorite thing to do is put it in a leather case and hide it in a pile of books. Can't do that with 10 inches. Kind of the motion in the ocean solution. If you catch my tide...

I love the 7 inch tablet, honestly would love a 7 inch phone that has the form factor of a phone not a tablet with very little bezzle. I think the n7 will perform well for a long while. I am in no hurry to upgrade. I am less likely to upgrade a tablet than I am a phone

Threw Kali on it and just use it for "pentesting" other than that I got some clip on joysticks from Walmart for 50cents so I'll use it to game. Its alright I guess I really really hate typing on it because of the lack of vibrations Haha. Just wish they'd put that in a tablet I love the tablet but its a bit slower than my nexus 5(which is understandable) lack of Rome(exciting) kinda bothers me but overall I'll use it until I buy the 8 lol also got a scratch on the screen a week after I had it and I have no idea how it got there.
