My Asus VivoTab RT 64GB is playing up and I cannot refresh or reinstall the OS as I get an Insert Media missing files error (see photo). Obviously Windows RT tablets don't come with external media with the OS.
I would be eternally grateful if someone could copy the recovery files to a usb (an option given in the OS) and then upload the file to either skydrive, drop box or other host for me to download. Once downloaded, the file can be deleted from the host. I think the file is between 3.5gigs and 4gigs. I could then re host it for anyone else who needs it.
Please, I have contributed a lot to the xda forum and would really appreciate some help.
FYI I had sent my tab to Asus for repair and it came back with the ability to not be able to refresh pc and I am furious. I don't want to send it off again and be without it again for another two weeks.

Sorry, I don't have the tablet, otherwise I'd be glad to help.
I have the x86 Windows 8, and it has the option to create recovery media (I used USB). I gather this is how one would create the files you need? It is probably a stupid idea, but have you tried creating a recovery media (assuming you can get to those menus)? The recovery data should be somewhere on the disk, so it might work.

I plugged in a usb to make a recovery usb but it only copies files to boot up and not all 3.5 gigs worth. The option to copy the recovery partition to usb is greyed out so I cant check it. When I use Disk Management, the recovery partition reports 4 gigs and is healthy so can't on earth figure out why I cant make a recovery usb. is there a way to show the recovery folder and manually copy the files? I uses security tab to get adminsterative rights to show the recovery folder in C:\ but the folder is empty.

My system said I needed an 8 Gb USB drive (but recommended 16 Gb). How big is your USB drive? It may be grayed out because there isn't enough room on the drive.

I also need the recovery file as mine cannot boot into Windows now. When I turn it on, it goes into automatic repair and later prompt that \windows\system32\winload.efi (Error code: 0x0000001) is missing or contains errors and will require recovery tools to repair it.

Any problem with torrent up the files?
I'm also looking for the Asus vivotab recovery image. The Surface image does not load the wireless drivers for the Vivotab. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I thought you could just refresh it to factory settings with in the os?

Strictly speaking, the OP didn't mention trying Reset (only Refresh and "reinstall" which may or may not have been Reset) but if those didn't work, it's highly unlikely that Reset would. Please do at least read the first post before commenting!

Was ( and still am) curious why Google choose MTP over MassStorage. The other member (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1023153) did some tests with interesting results. Can confirm that got similar results for MTP's favour ( transfered same video,music,pdf files to GN and HTC Sensation).
I don't think that was the only reason for Googles decision.
Also find out one very annoying experience with MTP : you can't edit file on phone memory. It has to be transfered to PC, modified and put back to phone...

It allows them to lump all of the internal storage together since MTP doesn't require the partition be unmounted with the phone.
Many people have phones that were partitioned poorly (N1, Vibrant, etc...) and after you install some apps you get an error that you've filled up your space (even though your phone still has 10GB free).
They hacked around it by doing Apps2SD, but even then, it wasn't perfect.
This new method allows them to utilize the full 16/32GB of storage however you want without any additional requirements from the user.
For most people that just want to copy their pictures off the phone, MTP is a lot smoother. It 'just works' and let's them get by with their day.
Unfortunately, the new way isn't perfect. I use Ubuntu for example and am having a hell of a time getting it to work. I eventually just gave up and installed a Samba File server instead.

@tjhart85, you can get mtp working but you just need to compile the latest libmtp from source, libmtp that's included in the ubuntu repos is an older version.
i think I'm the minority here in that I actually like MTP.
The fact that I can unplug the phone, and it's ready to go is worth it. I hated the media scanning tool from gingerbread and before. Now the phone is ready to go when I unplug.
It lets the entire phone be one partition, so there are no annoying issues with multiple partitions for system, apps, etc.. It also lets the phone be used while its connected and transferring to/from the device. Also, no more mounting/unmounting and waiting for the device to be available.
It overall just removes headaches associated with files not being able to be accessed properly because they're on a different partition or on the SDcard (such as no widget support from apps installed on SDcard).
I also don't get the big deal over MTP and actually prefer it. I have a mac and haven't run into any problems. The file transferring didn't seem any slower and if anything seemed faster so I don't really get why everyone seemed to freak out when it was originally revealed.

I haven't tried this, but it does look promising:

It sure sounds better than setting up a samba server, and since it's based on adb it can be made to run over wifi (although I'm not sure that is recommended).

It seems not all folders are appearing over MTP.
For instance my TitaniumBackup folder stored in /sdcard does not show at all and I'm not sure why. It might be because the folder contains no files the phone can work with? I honestly have no idea.
This was on Windows. Not Linux or Mac. So it seems to be a MTP-issue, not a platform-issue.
I had to adb shell in, create a tar of that and then adb pull it out to get it.
So yeah. MTP has its flaws. Hence me working on a workaround:

If I were to nitpick I would have to say that technically speaking that was always true, but yeah, now you actually have to manage that transfer manually and that sucks.
But you can use the memory on the phone while transferring from pc!

can I ask what exactly happens when you plug into a MAC? Eg, do you have to launch ATP, does it appear in Finder, does it launch iPhoto automatically? I'm just trying to get a picture & short of taking my MAC into town ... has anyone YT'd this?

MTP also solves the 4GB file size limit. With USB mass storage all phones have FAT32 for their data partition in order to be compatible with most computer, but that means 4GB file limit.
With MTP the file system isn't visible for the computer, so the phones will use a good filesystem like EXT4 also for the data partition.
Just got a brand new Galaxy nexus today and haven't got a chance to root it yet. But i was seriously appalled by the fact that it doesn't support usb mass storage, which i did not know before buying it.
I just wanted to know, will rooting make usb mass storage possible?

ROMs are transferred to the phone via MTP on Windows, just like music and videos are transferred.
MTP is the replacement for USB Mass Storage. You can still transfer files back and forth.

MTP does not transfer everything.
Try transferring your titanium backup files from your Nexus to your PC via MTP. I dare you. They're NOT there when you look at the Nexus from the PC-end.
Extracting stuff via "adb push" works fine though. This, and not having a drive-letter (so that things cant be scripted) was one motivation for me to start working on this thing:

Google/Samsung switched to MTP because now the OS and the files are on the same partition. So if you would mount the whole partition as mass storage your android would get down :-D
Maybe it could work with creating a new partition?

Just transferred my contents backed up by TiBu. Works fine.
You are right, they are not viewable from PC to phone. They transfer and copy fine (entire directory).

tried this many times. titanium transferring works perfectly.
Well, my problem is I work on pc's , sometimes a customer's machine doesn't get the Ethernet or wireless drivers after and install. I would normally download them on my droid x and use mass storage to transfer the file over....that works in windows 7...NOTin xp.

it's called a flash drive, have you heard of those?
I'm sure the OP has heard of a flash drive. However it would be much easier to just mount the phone like he has done in the past to transfer the downloaded file. Fishing out a USB OTG adapter, flash drive, and transferring is just extra steps.
Yes, a flash drive is probably the best bet for now... but I see why the OP finds it less than ideal compared to what he was used to.
Perhaps someone will come out with a custom ROM that has a new partition scheme to allow UMS. I personally wouldn't mind having a little 512MB partition on here for just that purpose.

No no no. Keep the files on the flash drive. Plug it into the computer. Win? Or if you need to find new drivers, you surely have a laptop you can use at work. Faster to find + download then using the phone anyway.
Having your phone + USB cable to hook it up to the computer is more cumbersome than just keeping the drivers for your work on flash drive
What if you need to transfer different files back and forth, and don't always keep a flash drive on you? I found with my HTC Desire that having mass storage was very useful for when I didn't have a flash drive... Admittedly, I can use my gnex for the same thing as all computers I use have win7 - but that is beside the point!
Surely it is possible to create some app, so as far as the PC is concerned it is connected to a USB device, but on the phone something else is occurring? Through some buffer or something...
I'm interested as well, as I'm having some trouble setting my Fedora laptop to talk as MTP. I'm comfortable transferring files via ADB but it can be a chore, and obviously none of my friends will have adb on their computers so transferring files socially will be a little hampered...

I have done that.. and then it stops to tell me cant copy/transfer files > 4GB because FAT32 does not allow it (Partition type limitation)
I even tried FTP'ing the file to the device and it stopped at 4GB exactly
Have you formatted your card differently?
are you using windows to transfer/copy the files? (I am)
do you use the standard windows copy/transfer method? (I am Using TerraCopy)
just plug the usb to pc and format the sd card as NTFS and you can remove the limitations of 4GB

Won't that affect how apps are installed as well? AFAIK most devs optimise their apps for FAT32, as it's the default format of the storage.

as I have read on another Forum post that once they formatted the Card and rebooted.. the card reformatted to FAT32
@dr9722 could you please state all your system specs that has allowed you to transfer the files
including the model of your HOX and the ROM maybe this affects it as well (dont know why it should??)

if it still isn't working later theres loads of other pages that show ways to do it just search google for how to split mkv files

It'd have to be formatted as exFAT or something. I don't know if it's doable, but that's the only way I can think of. Or possibly as ext4 and do file transfer via MTP.

yes I can zip it and split the files into varying sizes but then it defeats the purpose as I would like to move the file as is (time saving)

if i'm honest, i don't think it's possible without a rom mod - maybe ask a rom developer if it's possible.
you would need to modify a lot of stuff so it all works together properly, and that's if its ntfs.
exfat would no doubt be easier on the android side to implement, but then you'd need an app on windows side to be able to read that (win7 might actually include exfat support actually...)
still it's not something possible by means of just an app etc i don't think.

dont think this is specific mkv splitting so you wouldn't be able to watch the split mkv, you'd need to go onto a pc and merge the files before you could watch it, which would then leave you with a file that is once again too big to fit onto the phone :silly:

Accelerometer is a sensor that defines a devices's position, so it gives you ability to use such functions as screen auto-rotation. And the bug is that sometimes this sensor stops working until the next reboot.

Are you serious? I even successfully tried creating folder via it. Did you switched from Charge only mode to MTP? 'Cause in charge-only mode MTP device is recognized, but it is empty, without available storages. Or maybe for you it doesn't work because of Windows crappiness, lol. Linux is more friendly with Linux.

Yes, I selected MTP and use Windows.
Just empty window.
@FindYanot somehow managed it to work on Win 10 after enabing / disabling USB debugging.
Anyway good, that MTP not completly broken.

Just empty window.
@FindYanot somehow managed it to work on Win 10 after enabing / disabling USB debugging.
Anyway good, that MTP not completly broken.

There are often problems with Android on Windows that are absent on Linux. I had irritating issues with UMS mode in TWRP when I was using Windows (more strange is that it worked earlier and then suddenly my PC went insane when connecting USB in TWRP with storage mode enabled), but on Linux it works like a charm. And it is not the only example of problems in Android-Windows "relationship".
Guys I flashed the rom and it booted as usual and i went to next page of the setup guide i.e. add wifi in that i tried connecting to my wifi but while entering the password it shows unfortunately, aosp keyboard has stopped after i removed my wifi password and connected then it goes again to the first page of selecting country and i repeatedly pressed the yellow icon to proceed to the next page but its stucked on that page plz help me guys and do i need to do anything else?

Oh, there are a bunch! Wondering how it'll fare with the Android File Transfer on Mac. �� At least, ADB works, right? I need to update a few of my apps to support Marshmallow since they removed the Apache HTTP client (Google, must you really make things difficult? I spent an hour yesterday writing 75 lines of code just to add dividers between RecyclerView items... SMH). I'll most probably be shifting back to Lollipop AOSP by tonight. Anyway, if MTP works, I'll update you guys...
EDIT: So, no. Unfortunately, doesn't work on OS X as well. I didn't really expect it to, but then I was hoping that since it was UNIX, it would.
EDIT 2: So, it works with OS X as well! I hadn't selected the USB to transfer files previously.

For me MTP storage is working on windows 10 too. Sometimes it gives empty folders sometimes it work without a mess

It's done. I repleced original SSHD with SAmsung SSD.

Some users and moderator has asked me to add mote information what this is about.
Here is the very same text I have done for the whole package to do HDD/SSD preparation to use it as an internal Nvidia Shield TV Pro disk:
This is a guide to change Nvidia Shield TV Pro internal SSHD to SSD (or other 500GB drive).
This will only tell how to prepare SSD for this Nvidia Shield TV PRO 500GB. You have to also know how to open the device, how to take old disk out and how to put new to replace it. You also need a Linux computer with free SATA port to connect your drive to for flashing it. However there are not any screws to hold the drive and it has a common SATA connection.
Preparation takes two binary files to be put on the new drive. I have only done this for Samsung EVO 850 500GB drive (type MZ-75E500B/EU). I suppose this works with other similar drives too, but I can not guarantee it.
Here is what you need to do:
1. unzip start.zip and put binary file start.bin in the beginning of your SSD drive. I use Linux command DD to do this. If your drive is sdX the command will be something like this:
dd if=start.bin of=/dev/sdX bs=4M
2. unzip end_976574630.zip and put binary file end_976574630.bin to a proper place of the same disk. Again with DD it would be something like this:
dd if=end_976574630.bin of=/dev/sdX seek=976574630
3. put the SSD drive in your Nvidia Shield TV PRO and boot it up. Let it run about 15 minutes. It will not boot until you now cold boot it second time.
It takes a minute or two to boot this time and the device will come up as expected.
Enjoy your new Nvidia Shield TV PRO SSD !!!!
B.T.W The same procedure works with a normal 500GB HDD too in case you would like to use this type disk. So - this also works as an emergency backup in case the original drive will become defective.

Do you have a non-HD version? Then this will not work.
I have only made it possible to replace internal disk drive (SSHD) with SSD. This will not work with 16GB version but you need the 500GB Pro version to do this.

I would invest in a 500gb eventually if your method is tested and proven to work. Too bad the 256 won't work ?

I use Kickass kat.cr don't know about trackers I just click the magnet lol. Dropbox or Google Drive or any host site will work too
