Looking for a microUSB to sd card reader, usb slot and microUSB charger port?? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi,
I saw a plug (green colored) quiet some time ago on xda that would attach to MicroUSB on the phone and on the back end was another MicroUSB for charging along with USB slot, card reader. It used to be under or around $10.
Does anyone have a plug like that, i am thinking of using it with my GNex.
Thanks,

It's called usb OTG.

I don't believe that the phone can charge while performing the OTG function. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I was wrong. I ordered an OTG Y-cable and it arrived today. I plugged it into power first. Then I plugged it into the phone and it started charging. Third, I plugged in a USB stick and it mounted (using the help of the Stickmount app).
I then watched a movie from the USB stick and watch the charge level go up 4 percent while watching.
Awesome!
I am on Franco's kernel but I don't think that matters as long as you are rooted and have Stickmount installed.
Edit: This is the cable:

USB host cable for $5 on Amazon with Prime (works)

So, this works:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005FUNYSA/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details
However, it doesn't work for everything. A mouse works, but a USB Flash Drive doesn't seem to work, nor does another USB device that does work on the Acer A500 Android tablet I have.
So... Yeah. Just thought you guys would wanna know. I'll look into more devices. I know Honeycomb supported all kinds of USB devices (hub, flash drive, mouse, keyboard) so I'm a little surprised the flash drive didn't work. I'll let you know if I find anything else out. Might just be a driver issue we can work out with custom ROMS. Obviously the communications is working since the mouse works. It could be a power draw issue. I have a USB power meter and the mouse draws 20ma. The flash drive that doesn't work draws 60ma.
-Taylor
UPDATE: Works great with a device we are developing at work (basically a USB hub and FTDI chip combo board if that means anything to ya). It draws about 62ma, so the flash drive issue must not be due to power draw.
UPDATE 2: Rooted users can easily mount flash drives using the app StickMount in the market - its very clean and works well! Thanks to user [esoomenona] for the suggestion.

Actually it looks like no. One of the reviews points out its not a USB OTG (On the go) adapter. USB On the go is a USB port that can act either as a device (plug it into your computer) or as a host (plug in a mouse, etc). In order to tell the phone which mode to be in, USB OTG connectors need to have one of the pins hooked up to ground. Unfortunately not all of these adapters do (I have no idea what they're good for if they don't) and it looks like that one doesn't. But someone linked to the one on DealExtreme that might work.

Shoot, I paid a little over four bucks for that same one from the same company, on Newegg. I should've looked at Amazon as well. Oh well...
Okay, so I received the cable I stated above, and tried to plug in a microSD card via USB adapter, and it didn't work. After a bit of googling, I've come to think of two options for why it doesn't:
1. The cable doesn't work
2. The OS doesn't seem to mount them automatically. I found an app called StickMount on the Market, but it requires root, and I haven't rooted yet.
Anyone know anything about this?

Well I mentioned in the first post that USB flash drives don't work. A card reader is going to have the same issue, as they're basically the same. I think its related to the phone not having its own microSD card, and so it lacks the drivers to mount storage properly. Which still seems silly to me if the device has USB host support, they should include those things!
Plug in a mouse. If a mouse works, the cable is fine.

I honestly think this is going to be it...because of internal storage it doesn't come with the native ability to detect external storage. I'd imagine that app would allow it or that it'll get pushed out as an update down the road...maybe a MOD will get made too if it takes too long.
Either way, when mine comes *crosses fingers for tomorrow* I'll be rooting and post back the results.
Oh damn, StickMount works! Plug in a USB drive and stickmount will pop up asking to run. Then it mounts the drive and my file browser sees it. Then you unmount the drive before unplugging. Wish it was native but this is pretty damn simple. Thanks for finding it!
I was a bit skeptical since the USB drive doesn't even light up when you first plug it in, but once you run stickmount its all good!
Go ahead and root that thing! Just note rooting will erase the phone, so back up first!
I had a Micro USB to USB female for my Nook Color for UBS host. Tried it. Worked like a charm. It even drew enough to power a hub, the keyboard, and the mouse. I was shocked. Im going to but a splitter and use a MHL out to HDMI for 1080 goodness.
Got mine on Amazon for $1.46. Works well (I just wish it was a cable and not a plug though(.
I'll have to see how this works out, ordered the cable.
I have an externally powered USB hub that I can plug into the USB OTG cable.
This is great, I've been looking for these cables. Thanks!
Edit: Does anyone have any idea if you can use an MHL adapter for HDMI at the same time as one of these? I see that some MHL adapters have charging ports, but I don't know if they support data.

Using MHL through a splitter won't work based on how MHL works. You either get USB or MHL. MHL does not use USB-compatible signaling.

USB cable "OTG" not working am I doing it wrong?

I got a Micro-USB to USB (female) cable form ebay... from China (I didn't know until I chekced later. I usually have the "UK sellers only" option checked).
Anyway, after an eternity, it arrived today. But, it doesn't work when I plug it in. Nothing happens. My Sandisk Cruzer doesn't light up when I plug it in or anything.
I was on the ninphetamin3 Kernel, and I've tried the Siyah kernel, just in case it's the kernel that was limiting functionality... Apparently it's not because it still doesn't work.
It only cost a couple of quid, but is there something I might be missing that I can check before buying another from the UK?

That is not necessarily an OTG cable... did it SAY it was an OTG cable? If not, it probably isnt. Pin 4 and 5 need to be connected (in the micro usb side) for it trigger OTG functionality. if it is not working it means one of 2 things:
1. You didn't buy and OTG cable, you just bought a cable with the ends you wanted, but without the funtionality
2. Something is broken on your phone... test that cable in another phone with OTG capability (go to a verizon store if you have to)
3. I think i remember seeing you need an app to use some flash drives (keybaords and mice work without any app, i can attest to that from experience)

1. cut open the micro USB, and connect pins 5 and six

It looks like it works! Both the phone and my 64GB flash drive are being powered via a USB charger connected to a Y-cable. As far as I can tell, the phone battery isn't being charged and may still be draining a bit--this may depend on the current delivered by the USB charger. But I've been playing music for hours from an attached USB flash drive with my screen on and the battery level is still sitting at 98%.
I've attached ZIP files with a boot image containing the kernel. The yakju boot image was created by replacing the stock kernel in a Nandroid boot image obtained from the Galaxy Nexus described in my sig. The other boot images were created from the boot image included with the Google factory ROM. I can't test these, so use with caution. NOTE!!! Make sure you do a Nandroid backup of your phone before trying out the attached boot images. Things can go wrong and you want to be able to recover.
This was posted earlier in the thread, but credits for the kernel code tweak, along with details, go to the contributor to this thread
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/30615-can-you-charge-usb-host-mode-simultaneously/
Have fun!
10/09/12:
I've added two more ZIP files. These contain boot images with the code modded such that the phone battery is charged when using the Y-cable. NOTE: The phone will think it is being charged any time a USB OTG cable is connected. I haven't figured out a way around this yet. This doesn't really hurt anything, except if you have your phone set to stay on when charging, you could end up running down your battery! Important safety tip.
10/15/12:
I've replaced the previous ZIP files with two new ones. These contain boot images for takju and yakju JRO03C/4.1.1 that provide USB OTG+charging, with the added benefit that you can still use a standard USB OTG cable to connect an external device. As in the stock kernel, the phone will provide power for the external device. In other words, the new kernel in the ZIP archives auto-detects if there is a charger attached via a y-cable and uses it to power the external device and charge the phone, if it's found.
I've also fixed the problem where the phone would show a charging icon in the notification bar if a USB OTG cable was attached without any external device connected to it.
NOTE: THESE ZIP FILES ARE NOT MEANT TO BE FLASHED TO YOUR PHONE. These files contain a file called boot.img that can be flashed to your rooted phone from your computer via ADB with the commands
fastboot flash boot /path/to/<boot>.img
fastboot reboot
You can learn more about using fastboot at http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/wiki/Fastboot.
12/28/12:
Version V4 is replacing V3. This new version fixes the bug where detaching external power from the USB OTG y-cable or USB hub wasn't detected by the phone. Now, when power is detached, the phone switches to battery power, including supplying battery power to any attached USB devices.
Note that the reverse is not true. If you connect external power when the phone and external USB devices are being powered by battery, the phone will continue to use battery power. The external power is not detected. When in doubt, disconnect and reconnect the USB OTG cable to cause the phone to recognize what's attached.

Ok let me explain it a bit better. Lets say I have a flash drive (external storage, external hard drive, whatever you want to call it) I connect it to my phone with a usb to micro usb adapter. Now I have my ONLY micro usb connector in use, but after a while I'm running out of battery so I want to charge my phone BUT I can't since I can't remove my flash drive (because I'm using it).
Now I'm asking for an adapter or something that can let me connect my flash drive and still be able to charge my phone. like a 2 usb to 1 usb adapter for PC. Or like the adapter to connect 2 headphones in one headphone port.
I hope it's clear enough now.

Unfortunately, the answer is no. I've tried several ways to get this to work, with no success. I routinely mount a flash drive using a USB OTG cable and the Stickmount app in order to listen to my music collection. It works great, but USB OTG drains the phone battery rather quickly.
I even cut out a notch on my desktop dock so I could attach the flash drive while trying to charge the phone via the dock's pogo pins. Here's a thread discussing this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1651757
The USB standard does provide for a method of charging while using USB OTG via a device called an Accessory Charger Adapter. But I haven't found such a device available anywhere.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. If you do happen to find another solution, do let us know.
I don't think I have the bits needed to try it, but looking through the spec, I think you can simulate the requirements for the ACA.
Connect a 124K resistor from ID to GND on the micro side. That should tell the OTG host (the phone) to go to Charge/Host mode allowing the B device (memory stick etc) to work AND allowing the phone to charge... You will need to provide a decent 5V power connection. You need to power both the phone and the accessory device from this.

OTG cable male/female

Hi, anyone buyed an otg cable with male/female micro usb-usb 2.0 to connect external flash drive and keep charging the phone at same time?

Make sure you have a 'charge only' lead to the charger (Shows as 'AC connected' not 'USB Connected') or you'll find you won't have enough power to do everything.

Yes, i tried but i cant charge. I tried with other phone and works but dont have otg support.
The problem with OTG and simultanous charging is that you'll probably need a custom kernel supporting this.
Because if you use OTG (or a data cable respectively), the phone will only charge with 500 mA max. - this might not be enough to charge your phone while using power-consuming apps (navigation, games,...). If you want the phone to charge faster/draw more current, you'll need to short-circuit the data leads - but then you can't use OTG/data. Tricky...

I think that is not the reason because if i try to charge only didn't work, i think the charging cable is not compatible with moto g like some chargers specific for some patents.
If someone knows a cable like that to charge and use usb stick or something compatible with moto g I would appreciate.
The cable is probably working, but the kernel is not supporting it. If you use a USB y-cable, it will power a plugged-in USB stick / device, but not your Moto G. You will need a kernel or tomorrow supporting simultaneous data & charging. Have a look in the Nexus 7 sections, there you'll find more information about this.

You plug the USB C end into the Pixel and then use another cable to connect an older phone (presumably one you're already using with the older phone). Micro USB/Lightning into the older phone, USB into the adapter. The adapter can also be utilized for OTG - USB C into the Pixel, flash drive/other USB device into the USB port.

Also to use OTG. Plug that in, and you can hook up a keyboard, mouse, removable drive, someone elses phone, whatever.
Could someone clarify. I plugged the adapter in how I was directed by a thread at the "pixel community". The thread referenced a way to use the adapter to transfer files however I plugged it in set the settings to xfer files and nothing. Does the adapter go into the pixel or the (in my case) Note 7? The thread listed a way to make these transfers upon start up but I'm way past start up. I need to transfer a couple apps and a big phone log and a truck load of texts. Any help out there?
