Root your Galaxy Y
Rooting is the first step to customise your device. Without rooting absolutely 'extraordinary' nothing is possible. Yes your warranty becomes void after that. So what?? You can always get it back after unrooting it. So chill. No matter where you read that its very risky or something like that, I'll say refrain from going to those sites. They are just putting unnecessary fear into your mind. Most probably they fear you could make your device function better than them. So lets go on with it. I've made it simple for you. Just follow the steps.
1. Charge your device more than 80%. Coz you still have a lot of work to do...
2. Backup your contacts, messages, apps and everything you want. For the contacts and messages you can just about use anything off the Play Store with a few stars and good reviews. But for the apps I would personally recommend the Astro app. Yes I know what you want to ask. It's free..
3. Download the zip file for root and place it directly on your SD card, not in any folder. Do not extract it.
4. Switch off your phone.
5. Press the Home button, Power button and the Volume Up button and keep holding it until the Samsung logo appears. Now let go of the buttons. You will see that some writings have come in red colour. This is called the Recovery Mode. Your touch screen wont work now. So don't panic if you touch the screen and nothing happens. Only the volume buttons, home button and the power buttons work now. Volume buttons for going up and down. Home button for selecting and Power key for going back to previous screen.
6. Select 'Apply update from sd card'.
7. Choose the file that you have downloaded and select yes.
8. After that you'll be taken to another screen where there will be an option 'Reboot system now'. Select it and be patient and wait for your phone to switch on.
9. Check your apps and if you see the Superuser app, it means you are rooted.
10. Now open it and update the binaries.
That's it. You are good to go. The proud owner of a rooted SGY. :good::laugh:

This Samsung Y GT S5360B is my first (ever) smartphone
I was trying to follow this procedure but I always got a message: "ERROR: Failed to write..."
I've tried with several files "update.zip" from other sites and also this one, does anyone has the same message? I'm not using the SD card that came with the phone.
Thanks in advance and sorry if it's too naive my problem.

You can install any custom rom made for your device... read the first page of rom thread you want to install before downloading it..

Yeah..like Deadly said..read the first page of any rom u r going to install to know about its features and installation process..just make sure it's for this device..and I would recommend reading the comments too..to know about the known bugs..if any..and how to fix them..

im completely new @ this android rooting thing............first of all i have a SGS2 from tmobile..... i rooted my device following a video i saw on youtube...in the description said somthing about this site so i went to the market and purchase and app called xda premium....ok so far so good......i dont know what to do with my device....dont know how to install themes( this why i root) the only thing i got to make was the wireless tether.......... other things like games,performance,al that stuff ,i cant make anything i made a clockwork mod or something like that because i thought of it as a mod for my clock LOL im new at this so please can somebody help me out?

it will start you up. Make sure that you follow each step CAREFULLY.
What you want to do with your phone to get you started is this..
- install clockworkmod recovery (This will be your safety net from bad flashing(uploading new roms))
- root your phone.
- start flashing! (WARNING: now, be careful not to flash any rom other than the T-Mobile t989 model or AT&T skyrocket model roms. If you flash any other roms besides these, you will brick your phone (say bye bye! to your phone).

dude not to be a **** but i wouldnt even do anything until you read up some more on how this rooting and installing custom roms **** works. especially if u thought cwm was a clock mod lmao. its all good tho bro just read up on everything u can and make sure u flash the right roms and mods to your phone. sgh t-989. and if you need any kind of help dont hesitate to pm me even if it is a stupid question. i want to see u try though, u get respect that way

i just want to install themes and free games and all that my phone is already rooted..... i have metamorph i believe its for themes right?
Being rooted does not mean you can start down downloading free games.
please make sure you read everything on stickies....and if you interested in doing some flash roms or kernels.....read all pages on that the thread....your future questions already anwsered...if you don't you will get flamed or redirected to use search...but don't give up to be part of this community...there are alot of helpful members so they will help you when they have time.

This isnt like an iPhone with cydia dude. main purpose of rooting is to customize your phone any way you want. I would also recommend reading the noob guide. Read alot. Donr want this to be an expensive brick for ya.

Ok my friend,ive had iphone all my life now im stucked with this rooting thing but ok it seems that i have to read a lot, btw i have a problem with my wireless tether app it wont work, the first time did work tho! If u want all ur phone to be Arabic u should flash cm10 or cm9 and change the language in the beginning of the setup.

Search button at the top of the page will give you all the info you will ever need...and then some more.
Just make sure you read it very carefully, read it again, and then again, and when you fully understand it...then flash the ROM.

And NO. Do not flash any 9300 rom on your i747 unless you want it hard bricked. They are 2 different devices with 2 different processors. Make sure you stay in the ATT i747 section, and don't get cross linked into the 9300 threads.

Well it should be compatible as both are same except for branding - i would suggest you try out as even if anything goes wrong you can flash back via odin

Oh man, my file is not a virus, it's just the classic Update.zip I modified the updater-script for 5660L model. In Italy we have a lot of 5660V model and you only change a letter in that file to make it work...
But you are right, trust no one expecially on the web

Maybe a problem with your update.zip file. Tell me weather you got CWM or not. If you are in clockworkmod and your update.zip has no error surely it will get installed without any errors.. Please tell me that you get CWM or not first.. Hit thanks if i've helped you..

To get this I Used my original firmware (only boot partition and recovery partition) and worked it with MTK droid tools.. And flashed the patched recovery with SP Flash tool.. Thats all.. you are done. Try it for different devices. The limitation is u can only get CWM 5.X.X(non touch) only with this.

To start with... I am just an end user only. I don't know the meaning and functionality of these CWM/ROOTBOX/ROM etc.. words.
I am using Celkon A97 and company launched it with Ginger Bread 2.3.6 and later on I went to Service center and got it updated to ICS 4.0.2/3. Now the warranty was also over and the service center guy will not upgrade to JB. So. if I want to upgrade to JB 4.3 version, what all shall I need to do ?
If you just tell me in simple steps --- like, to download 2 files - 1 for root and 2 for image file of JB .. How these 2 should be operated.
I am sure you got what I want to know - though .. Thanks a lot in advance...
