[Q] Text messages and calls not being received - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I've been having a problem with receiving texts sometimes and I recently noticed that it happens with call apparently. The issue is that I'm texting people back and forth and then all of a sudden I wont receive messages for a long time (couple hours). At some point, someone's text message will push through all of the other ones all at the same time. Sometimes when I assume i'm having this issue, I will send a text to myself and it will push the other ones through as well. Recently though I was made aware that during this "outage", I also was not able to receive phone calls at all. The signal is strong at all times (3-4 bars). Also happens when I'm home all day and not changing locations when it will suddenly stop getting texts and calls. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? I restarted the phone and changed cell towers with the Airplane mode many times and the issue continues to happen at random times. It is really inconvenient. Suggestions?
Technical details: I use the stock 4.1.1 Rom that comes with AT&T S3. I do have LTE in my area.

And now it has happened 3 days in a row but at different times of day. This is a huge problem for me as I use my phone a lot. Any help would be appreciated

You still have your IMEI number via settings -> about phone -> status?

That's weird. Re-seat your SIM card, if that doesn't do anything then take a trip to your nearest AT&T store/dealer and have them swap out your SIM card and see if it still occurs after that.

I had a similar problem a while back and it happened to be a network problem with my carrier. Gave them a call and all is fine now.

It happend to me too. I went to att store and get new sim. No problem for last 15-20 days. Looks like i got stronger signal too.

Just to give anyone interested in this an update:
I went to the AT&T store today and told them my issue so they told me to go to the nearest AT&T device support center (which was really far away). People over there told me they heard about this issue many times over the past couple of months. The guy working there had a S3 and said he has the same problem. They received an email from the higher-ups this morning specifically talking about this random outage thing I have and that they are currently working on it. They were told to not exchange phones or sim cards because of this since it wont help. The issue involves a combination of Network and Jelly Bean software problems and happens on all new LTE devices that have Jelly Bean from AT&T. They told me to check periodically if there is a solution.
I guess I just gotta wait. Unless someone recommends a ROM that is not based on the latest AT&T jelly bean?

Bumping it up, both me and my wife have had this happen. From what im read its a pretty widespread deal.
Anyone know of a work around at least until they fix it?

Keep us updated
Same problem here - switched from Verizon to AT&T last month and started noticing this problem a few weeks ago. Back then a Google search didn't find much on it, but this thread looks promising.
Just to add my two cents: I'm on a rooted S3 with task650's AOKP (4.2.1) build 12.23.2012 (link). Made sure to flash the modem for my phone (I747UCLI5 from here). Problem: phone randomly won't receive calls or texts. Sometimes calling someone will fix it.
I read somewhere that on AT&T, calls and texts are received over 3G and sometimes phones have difficulty switching from 4G. Anyone know if this is true?

Do a full wipe /system, /data, /cache, /dalvik cache. And your problems should be gone 9 times out of 10 that's usually everybodys problem

Seems to still be working fine.

I started a thread on this also and just yesterday received some info from AT&T tech.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2123974

guys,
it is an ATT issue,
here is a temp solution for a fix:
1) With phone on, take off back cover and press your SIM card so it releases from the spring. It won't come all the way out as it's blocked by the battery. This seems fine - I didn't bother trying to force it out as I didn't want to break anything...
2) Once you see the message that the SIM card is removed, go to the dialer and dial *#2263#
3) You should see a menu with band selections. The current setting is "Automatic". If you switch to "GSM All", you will be EDGE (2G). If you switch to "WCDMA All", you will be on HSPA+ (3G, though AT&T and others call it 4G).
4) Press the SIM card back into place until it clicks. For whatever reason the phone will not recognize it until you reboot. Upon reboot you should see your new setting in effect

TMobile US Random Reboots

So I'm having an issue that is starting to drive me nuts. I have 2 Defys. One is my work phone, one is personal. My work one has been fine for 2.5 months. This prompted me to get one for personal use. However within the last week I have started having issues with both of them randomly rebooting. Always within 10-15 seconds of each other. Work one is original rom, factory reset, unrooted. Personal one is rooted, .360 update, and a bunch of apps. On my to work and back home I can always get them to do this. I get a beep, no service notification, and then approx 2 minutes later they reboot. during this time they are extremely unresponsive. Already called TMobile thinking it was a tower issue, but all checks out well on their end. It's driving me nuts. Has anybody had this issue, or know how to solve it. I don't think its the phones. On wifi they run fine all day long.
Have you tried the newer uicc SIM? Was told by the pda team I should switch over. I told them I was experiencing a reception issue. Since both your phones have gone nuts at about the same time it's either service or aliens. You might try one sim swap and see if it helps.
Both of them are brand new sims right from the box. From what I've gathered they already are the newer sims.
Let me share my experience about random reboots. I had also put it up in here but didnt get much response.
I narrowed down after a lot of experimenting that the reboot happens because of one issue - "The phone tries to reconnect to data network while there is very low signal and suddenly goes into a boot"
It somehow boggled me for months on how this could happen only to me when none of the users in this forum had anything like that. I changed the phone too. But the reboot continues. I got an app called Shutupbattery which can automatically switch off data network when network strength is below a certain limit (i set it at -102dbm). This seems to have slightly impacted the rebooting process. I see some improvement but also not satisfied with this app. It still does not completely shut off the data network on the cut off value and hence the phone does manage to reboot again.
I am trying a few combinations of values and seeing if I can arrive at a conclusion. Let me know if this was useful. For me this is something like a deal breaker and I am feeling of giving up the phone or changing the service provider.
I can tell you for a fact that it has to do with signal strength and data. However 4 days after I discussed this with TMobile Tier 2 support, they dispatched techs to the tower and since then...no more issues. The few other towers I have had issues with I've done the same thing and all of a sudden the problem disappears. I've been very happy with the support. Better than ATT ever did. I suspect it has to do with their implementation of 4G. I've noticed when it does this I get a momentary connection to HSPA before the phone drops back to UMTS then GPRS. You can get to this menu bu going to *#*#4636#*#* . Otherwise call Tmobile.

error code 128 data call failure

This has been happening to me for the last couple of days. Out of the blue my phone will pop this error: Data call failure. Error code 128. Unable to establish wireless data connection. I have done some research on this error message and most of the things I found had to do with using the phone as a hot spot. I am not using that feature. I am using a custom rom that I have had on for a couple of months now. Nothing has changed on my phone. I have tried updating the prl and then updating the profile. I have pulled the battery and left it off for half an hour. None of the other phones on my account have this issue. It is particular to my phone only. Is it this something I can call sprint about and they can reset or do I need to flash my radio again or take it in to sprint?
Had the same thing happen to me today. Called sprint and they said there was a data issue going on in my area. I say its rubbish but whatever.

That's been happening to me all day today. I thought it was maybe the kernel I installed today (more freedom) but after seeing this maybe it was the earthquake on the east coast causing problems with the network?
I have been getting these errors all day today as well.
i've been getting it all day... I thought it was kernel
I keep getting that error to. Thought i messed up my phone. Guess it was the earth quake, That **** was crazy though, never felt one before. Anyway after it happened i lost service on my phone for like 2 hours, kept getting beeping noises when i would try to make a call.
Sorry to hear others having this problem as well but I am glad that it probably isn't my phone. I would hate to get my evo replaced with a newer one that can't be rooted.
I know running CM7 right now and getting no 3g speeds right. Lame. But I got wifi though.

It can be rooted! These Dev's don't let us down, come-on man.
This started happening to me after the earthquake. In NYC
you mean Virgina? But yes, the last few days especially today after the quake. Ivebeen getting it alot.
I just had to reinstall synergy because it started freakingout saying that my andriod process had stop working, and a media process stopped working. was driving me insane.
Yeah know issue with Sprint call tech and do ctms ticket and maybe prl update or maybe * 18. The issue may be cleared by now .
Just the last couple days? I been getting these errors on and off for months now... before I rooted, and bricked my phone, so I'd say it has something to do with sprint not having enough bandwidth... or something like that anyway....
data call failure error 128
My Evo 4G started getting this Data Call Failure Error 128 last week (Wed), also only when I unlock... It is only a message, but everything works fine afterwards. It would happen about 5 times a day.
Then I went to Mexico for the weekend (3 days) and was roaming over there. Not once did the message pop up. Everything was fine, roaming data, text messages, phone calls. Thought everything was fixed. Came back on Monday and once I was on the Sprint network, started receiving the messages again on unlock.
I updated PRL and Profile and everything. That didn't stop it. Tried changing from Sprint to automatic roaming and that didn't really do anything. I thought it was a couple of apps i had (like Green Power that turns off data and turns it back on) but uninstalled it and the messages kept popping up. Tried enabling always-on data and that seems to work but that drains the battery faster than usual. Been searching all android forums looking for others in this situation and it seems like only a Sprint/HTC issue (Evo 4G, 3D and Shift). This is getting very annoying. It happens about 5 times a day.
My wife thinks that it's Sprint fixing and adjusting their network getting ready for the iPhone rush.
Wow, glad to know that I'm not the only one. I think that I had somehow did something wrong with my phone. I keep on getting these Data Call Failure - Error Code 128 messages several times a day. I tried reflashing a new rom, then doing it again. Must not be the rom, but Sprint. Annoying!!!!
it was just a sprint issues
Also cannot call the *2 or the *4 automated lines to sprint, get a busy signal and pop up saying "network is busy try again later", but can get through to sprint on a landline just fine. Apparently I cannot connect to what the sprint tech says is the "automated lines". I continue to get the error code 128 repeatedly, whether on wifi, 3g or 4g, and Sprints only "remedy" is to do a factory re-set which I have read has not affect.

[Q] Has anyone experienced service cutting out frequently?

Well I got the Verizon LTE Galaxy Nexus a few days ago (on release day) and since I started using it, service will drop out intermittently. For example, I'll be in my house with 4 bars and a 4G LTE connection (the signal has always been very reliable here) and I'll be using the phone perfectly with no problems. I'll lock it and put it down for anywhere between 5-15 minutes, and frequently (not always) when I pick it back up and unlock it, the phone will say "Searching for Service". The same problem also occurs when sending text messages. I'll click the send button and the messaging app displays and error claiming that the message could not be sent. I try to resend the message a few times, and after about 10 seconds the phone says that service has dropped out completely. The last scenario with this problem is when I'm simply using the phone for web browsing, listening to music, playing a game, etc. I'll be using it and my service will randomly disappear. This happens on WiFi and when I'm using mobile data. It also happens at home and while in other areas (with good service or bad service). Is anyone else experiencing a problem similar to this? If not, should I ask Verizon to replace my device?
I was on calls on mine on and off all day Thu and Fri. I never saw this issue.
Hey man, I just returned my GNex due to the exact issue you are describing. They swapped me a different one and it seems to be fixed. I'm still only getting 1-2 bars max but signal drops are not happening now. they were happening so constantly before i was ready to just return the phone outright.
It's really annoying because they have to reproduce the problem before they will give you a new phone. They looked me up in the computer and said their system says I have zero dropped calls (that's BS because I have been dropping constantly) and they made a phone call while I was in the store that lasted 5 minutes without dropping...strangely while in store I had 4 bars but as soon as I leave the parking lot I get 1-2. I was about to walk out of store defeated and without a new phone but service popped back off and I was able to get the guy to see it and fail to make a call to my voicemail...this new swapped out phone works much better.

Just got off the phone w/verizon for the same problems. He stated that he has been receiving a lot of complaints about this issue. He said that he is sending a error report to Samsung. He also said that I could take the phone back and exchange it. Every one with this problem should contact Verizon so they can inform Samsung.

Hmmmm well thanks for the responses everyone! I'm probably gonna call VZW and get them to exchange it today.
P.S. I even got a new SIM card to see if that fixed the problem and it didn't, so it's definitely a problem with the radio in some devices.
I have not experienced this in MN.
Got mine exchanged today
Hey, I had the same problem with mine when I got it out of the box. I took it to the store, and it consistently reproduced the problem. They tried the SIM card, then replaced the phone. Seems to be working well now.

[Q] Issues after upgrading to Jelly Bean

Myself and three others are experiencing the same issues with our GS3's and was wondering if anyone else has had these issues.
1. When trying to place a call most times it tries to dial then hangs up and goes to the lock screen.
2. When #1 does not happen it take 3-4 times of retying the number before actually ringing. Tried from different towers same thing
3. The keyboard does not keep up with the typing it often takes a while for it to work
4. When tethering with paid subscription and I try to place a call the data stops working.
Anyone else have these issues?

Very interesting that you bring this up. I recently have been suffering from the following:
1.) When trying to place a call it tries to dial and hangs up. I usually have to try 3 times before I can get the call to go through or have to soft reset
2.) A LOT of my friends have told me that when they try and call me it will only go through about half of the time. Sometimes the get "The ATT customer is unavailable", other times it will just beep at them, and finally it will go through but not ring on my phone.
3.) Same keyboard issue. I found that if I turned off all the auto correct and predictive text that it helped, but I will still get a lag issue once in a while.
Comments- I thought it was just my original GS3 that was starting to crap out so I did a warranty exchange, and the same symptoms keep happening. I also got a new SIM card, but that has not helped out either. One AT&T Tech rep told me there were major tower issues in my area, but then another I spoke to said there were none.
Now I dont know if I should ask for a new GS3, go to a different phone or what.
Yup. My keyboard freezes up once in a while, also I get " unfortunately music player has stopped" while connected through bluetooth. I usually just re open music player and it works fine.
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda app-developers app
Yeah, we all have the same issue when people try to call us and they get "The ATT customer is unavailable". Also one more thing I forgot to mention is that I sometimes try to call a number and get a pop up that says Emergency Calls only.
Not sure what to do at this point but getting very frustrating.
I've definitely had the keyboard lag pop up. Only solution I've found is to turn off the phone and back on. It seems to do OK for a few days then at least.
just got back from an ATT store. A girl there confirmed that its related to the JB update for the GS3 and for the Note 2. She has the Note 2 and said its much better than the issues with the GS3 but it still has inbound and outbound calling issues. It has to do with how the phone (maybe modem related) switches from LTE to 4g.
Customer service offered to send me a Note 2 for $100 and let me keep my GS3. I might do that and sell which ever I dont like better.
Yeah I went to the ATT store as well and was told that this is a known issue and that Samsung is working on a fix but there is no ETA. Wish they offered me a Note 2 for $100.

It seems that the switching between LTE and 4G due to a call is causing multiple issues. From what I have seen issues extend not just to these problems but also random battery plummets for some. The "switch" somehow does not work correctly hardware wise for some phones. Under JB it seems to break at times for receiving and making phone calls. I hope they find a way to make LTE work as a voice line as well and update accordingly so the switch does not have to occur.

[Q] Fixes yet for calls going straight to voicemail?

I have searched for over 2 weeks now online for a fix, I am on phone number 3 and sim card number 3. My phone, at least once a day, send all phone calls to straight to voicemail (showing no missed calls), texts do not come in etc. When this is happening, I show full bars and 4G. My wife is using my old Galaxy S and her works fine (not the network being down). If I restart my phone, I will get my missed texts and voicemails and I will receive calls as normal for a little time.
I have factory reset several times, as above, I am on my 3rd phone (2nd refurb that was probably sent back for this issue), 3rd sim card, I make sure I'm not in airplane mode, auto block calls are off, call forwarding is off, not connected to WiFi calling.
I am at my whits end, I'm about to send this great Galaxy S3 back and switch to maybe a Nexus 4 (granted I've seen all JB phones with this same issue) to see if I can just get a phone that works...like a phone.
Has anyone figured out yet why this occurs? Alot of people said it started with the upgrade to JB. Has anyone found a fix for this thing?
Also, would rooting and tossing on a custom rom fix this?
Please help, thanks in advance!

I could give that a try, but I really don't want to go back in versions, I love JB and don't see the point in wasting money on a new phone when I could have gotten one for free or cheaper that uses ICS.
Thanks
I was having the same issue. However, mine was just blocking one person. I check under the persons contact info, you can hit menu and select reject calls. I then checked under Call Settings (press menu while on the dialer), first option is Call rejection. You can turn this option on or off and add or remove numbers here. Hope this helps someone.
