EDIT: I figured out that we can actually control the LED notification light with this app now. Instead of using the file for the capacitive buttons, just substitute it for one of the LED files.
Green - /sys/devices/platform/msm_ssbi.0/pm8921-core/pm8xxx-led/leds/led:green/brightness
Red - /sys/devices/platform/msm_ssbi.0/pm8921-core/pm8xxx-led/leds/led:red/brightness
Remember to also enable it in Accessibility! It still doesn't work well for any time less than 1 second, but I don't feel like that's a huge deal.
If you want to use the button LED, you can still use that file as well.
Since the OG's notification light (or frequency) is shameful to say the least, I just discovered this app today and it's sooooo handy for our phones even though it was meant for phones with no LED at all. Basically, it uses the capacitive buttons as a notification light.
Download the HDPI version and install it.
When you first open it, you have to tell it where the button backlight file is since it's different on every phone. Ours is located at /sys/devices/platform/msm_ssbi.0/pm8921-core/pm8xxx-led/leds/button-backlight/brightness.
Lastly, scroll down in the main menu to where it says "Enable ButtonLED in accessibility" and click on it. It'll take you to the system accessibility settings where you just have to toggle it on.
It took me a little while of playing with the settings to get it working how I wanted, and you can do the same. I have noticed a few issues here and there, but overall it works pretty great. One thing I found was that if you try to set the LED on time to anything less than 1 second, it just does a real quick flash, regardless of what length you chose. Personally, I like 1 second on, 1 second off.

No difference so far, but I don't think that I've had a notification that I haven't seen and cleared within five minutes. I'd be interested to see what the drain is if it goes unmonitored for a couple of hours.

Not with this app unfortunately. You can either tell it to use the green color or the "red" (orange) color for the LED and that's it.
Works on stock kernel?
Is this supposed to work with stock ZVC kernel?
Test works, and the logs show that ButtonLED detects and processes my notifications, but it won't light the led.

I have set up Light flow for several applications,but, for instance, when i recieve sms , i get sound and vibrate both when screen is on and when screen is off, but i get notification light only when screen is off.. What to do folx.. I know it sounds a bit stupid, but i would like that notif light when screen is on also..

One more question tho - i have set up the mod for charging battery : notif light lights up and stays on all the time while battery is charging.. Can this do any harm to led light or phone itself (heating etc)? Or it is intended so it can stay on for long time ?
I had light flow on my galaxy nexus. Although the features are nice, i uninstalled because it seemed very broken. The led would stay on evwn after i checked notifications and so forth. Yeah it was cool, but just didnt see the risk of burning out my led.
For me it works like charm .. But only think i want to know is this :
Can led stay up for longer time ? Like, for example, the HTC Sensations led is staying up for all time while you are charging (by default), and it doesnt burn out. So is GN led designed to stay up for long time, or no ? (Im asking this because i want to know if i can charge the phone whole night and have led turned up)

Yes it can! Start LightFlow, choose notifications"then pick the app of your choice. There you can able and enable (amongst many other options) the duration of how long you wish the led to stay on for that particular app.

LED's have a life of many thousands, if not, tens of thousands of hours. It's unlikely that the notification LED will ever burn out while you own that phone... Unless you keep the phone for six or seven years and keep the led on almost all the time!
If your led burns out consider it akin to winning the lottery.

Ive let mine to constantly show an orange light while i leave the phone on charge overnight and a green when it is charged. Led's wont die on you unless you keep your led on for like 6years straight, so nothing to worry about

Yeh I found the same thing, seemed really broken to me, was so annoying to get rid of notifications and then still have the led going off.
Guys just a quick question. I think this led is three colors right? Red, blue, and green and to get other colors it just mixes them right?
If you guys use colors other than those three I mentioned do you guys kind of obviously see that theres more then one color shining?
Like for purple it looks like purple on top and redish on bottom. Clearly like two colors.
Anyone? Just wanna know if its how others have it or just me??

Sure it does
I have Light Flow set up to show a solid yellow color while charging. When I plug in my phone, the LED blinks on then off. If I turn the screen off, the yellow light cones on like it should. If I then turn the screen on without unlocking the phone, the light remains.
Only after I unlock the phone does the LED not function.

I found that problem was because of the ROM I was on. Some ROMS would need me to launch the lightflow app to clear the notification, but I use CND and it works exactly like it is supposed to. I could flash AOKP and it would work how you describe.
Does it have any kind of effect on battery life? Seems like it would keep the phone awake.

My phone deep sleeps just fine with lightflow.
I installed the apk NoLed from GooglePlay (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...lt#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5sZWQubm90aWZ5Il0.) and i think it is a fantastic apk as we don´t have a regular notification led as others phones.
How does this work exactly does it prevent your phone from going to sleep? What about the Lock screen? Do you have to remove the lock screen to see this?

You have lots of options to configure the apk, when i receive email (gmail) my phone vibrate, make a sound and the screen blinks an small mail icon, all black, just the icon. You can set how long it will blink, can also ajust the proximity sensor to not show the icon when the phone is in you pocket, and so on.
Too much to tell, install and try.

The app is quite good, very customizable, but it drains too much battery. Energy saving options are not enough.

Are you referring to with even no notifications active? Or with notifications active?
For me, it doesn't seem to bad, though overall batter drain is like 10% over 10 hours, sleeping with nothing else active.
Can't say.. if i get a text, or just a whatsapp notification or anything else, my battery is drained when i take it back. I don't say that battery is halved, but it is still a remarkable loss.
This is why we need BLN. BLN should use a lot less juice as it is only a small LED and not a big screen. Hopefully someone will modify the ICS kernel and we will get it.

From what you said, i'm assuming you totally has no idea how (AM)OLED screens works, so let me give you a fast walktrough.
On most mobile phones you can see TFT-LCD based screens. These screens uses a background (white) light trough the entire screen surface, this light is first polarized then secondly filtered. This filter is controlled by the electronic, witch results how it blocks or let's trough the way of the background light, resulting the picture what you see on the screen.
However the LED screens, including OLED and AMOLED screen are rather different from the above.
Each pixel on the screen is one tiny independent light source, aka. a Light Emitting Diode.
When the question comes to power consumption, from the above you can see that the TFT-LCD has a relative constant power consumption, because the backlight always has to be on, even if the entire screen shows black.
As for LED displays, only those areas uses power, witch actually emits light, in other words: the pixel/screen area is else then full black.
This is the reason why "use as much black as possible" is mostly suggested for this kind of screen, because if the less leds emitting light, the less the power consumption are.

I think the BLN pro app would be able to achieve the blinking. You have to buy it though.

After just getting the one these are just a couple annoyances to me and I feel there is probably no way to disable them... Also not having power save mode toggle is a little annoying but I saw somewhere that it's apparently baked into 4.2.2 or something.
I think it is but power saver is really dumb. It honestly wastes more battery for reasons I'm too lazy to type again

Bump on the charging LED turn off. I use the phone as my alarm clock and leave the display on all night. One it hits FULL, that green glow is a spotlight! LOL!
I've been scouring all over the place for something like this as well.
I could likely stomach the charging LED as it is red for the most part at night for me and by the time it turns green I'm too damned sleepy to care, but the capacitive lights are annoying. I too like to leave my screen on so that I can see what time it is if I should wake up before my alarms.
Does anyone know if this is possible on an unrooted device?

I tried a few and either I'm inept or they don't work, so I spose I'm gonna have to play the waiting game
Just came over from an LG Optimus G Pro from 2013. I could change the colors of the LED (which surrounded the entire home button), for texts, phone calls, appointments, charging, etc...
Can the LED color on the G7 be changed for the above? I've found where I can have it blink different colors for calls from specific persons, but that's about it.
At this point, I'm still not sure what colors go with what...I've seen red, green , and pale blue blinks so far.
I'd also like it to blink at a faster pace. Right now it blinks every 10 seconds. I'd like to be able to lower it to blink every 2 or 3 seconds possibly. Basically Id like to see what's going on with the phone while it is sleeping, with just a casual glance. If I have to wait 10 seconds to see an LED blink to ascertain whether I missed a text, I might as well pick it up and turn it on. I'm constantly in and out of my office throughout the day, and a more frequently blinking LED would be quite nice!

I just tried that app, and it puts a big blinking dot on the phone's display, which I guess is not bad...but I'm looking to be able to control the actual LED that resides to the side of the front camera.

Strange! I triedthat the first time and it didn't work. Went in just now, tried it again, and got it working. Thing I can't get working now is the user selectable blink pattern. No matter what numbers I put in for the 2 values, it blinks rapidly...faster than the standard "fast" blink. I'm probably not understanding the numbers properly. Have you been able to get the user adjustable blink rate figured out?

Blink rate - user defined - I use 800 top, 50 bottom. Play around with those. One is the on time 800, other is the off time 50.

I'm currently with a phone that has an LED notification light which is pretty convenient for me because I'm the type of persons who usually check his phone only when there's a message. Nowadays, I knew that this convenient notification LED have been discontinued
If I buy a future One Plus phone, How can I tell if I get e.g. a whatsapp message without constantly checking my phone from time to time?
P.S. I'm also not interested to have an that thing called "on screen display" that is running 24/7 just for an average 2-3 messages I recieve / day. I'm aware of software notification LED in the app store but I'm not really into software solutions because they tend to eat battery life pretty much the same way as on screen display.
I also don't really understand what's the deal about eliminating it?! if they can't find a space for it on the edges - because edges became so small nowadays - they can simply merge it somehow with the punch out lens for the front camera! or make a built-in software solution that popus out the notification on the screen ONLY when I get a message.

First I thought that same but I think ambient display replaced the notification led. If you lift it up or just tap (not double tap) on the screen, you will see your notifications. I don't like always on display too.

So do I have to tap everytime I'm suspecting a message?! That's not convenient at all and I really hope that all manufacturers return back that LED notification light. It was a stupid decision to make really

No, if you get a message your phone will turn the ambient display on too, to show you the notification. But after a few seconds it will turn the screen off again.

That's still not convenient because I may not be present beside my phone to see the notification when it's triggered. The notification LED is blinking in a nicer continuous way to tell me that there's something i need to check. I still insist that ditching it was a very silly decision towards inconvenience

I also miss my notification LED from my OP6. I installed the app called NotifyBuddy to replace it.

It's not good as the app needs to be running all the time even in the background to deliver notifications. I read so many negative reviews about such apps. Nothing is convenient like the LED notification

When using NotifyBuddy, disable notifications on ambient display and double tap to wake, so it can work properly.

That's what I don't like. Third party apps are mostly bad at batter drain.
Well if u guys are patient enough Oneplus already confirmed they are working on Always on Display for that reason.

The whole point of the discussion is return of the notification LED which doesn't need constant unlocking for the phone to see if there's anything new, nor does it need an always on screen display

Well if you read what is always on display you will realise you dont have to unlock your phone to see anything

I find the lack of LED very annoying.
yes, you can tap the screen, or lift it up to check, but I find it very common that a notification icon is NOT present, but if I unlock, and scroll down, I will see a new email/text/etc.

AOD, if well done, does not drain any more battery than a notification LED. When you get a notification, it will only lit up a few pixels on the screen, in any shape you want. You can literally simulate a LED with AOD. Personally I use the app "always on edge", I set it up to show the name of the contact and the messaging app when I receive a text, super useful, way better than just a LED. I didn't notice any more drain in battery life, I can still very easily last a whole day of heavy use.

EDIT: I can't get AOE to show up on my OP7T when the screen is off? Am I missing something obvious? I gave it all of the permissions I saw it asking for... but still no visual way to tell I had a notification without touching the phone.
