Tetrax magnetic car mounting solutions - Galaxy S III Accessories

Hey everyone,
I have tried many car phone mounts, but none of them worked as I was wishing.
Then I googled this keyword "minimal car mount" and suddenly found this interesting idea based on magnetic power.
What do you think?

I seen a lot on youtube. With Velcro people mounting ipad, tabs etc.
But Tetrax seems very minimalistic and beautiful.

That's my concern also. Was going to mount it to a case away from the nfc chip. My nexus 7 case is magnetic and it doesn't affect the nfc.

If they want to be taken seriously, they should really get someone to proof the front page of their website - smarthpone?

I was also looking for a minimalistic mount for my phone. I hate those suction cup and dashboard mounts so I got the tetrax xway and I love it. It mounts nicely on my dash near and blends into my stereo. Having the little metal nipple on my phone is a bit annoying but the convenience of quickly and securely attaching my phone to my car is worth it.

Picked up a Tetrax XWAY magnetic mount for my GS3. Works surprisingly well and is probably the most unobtrusive option around ie. No suction cup, cradle etc.

Maybe old school thinking but, aren't magnets harmful to most electronics?

They are using different kind of technology that doesn't create strong magnetic field. Each holder has 4 tiny magnets.

I've been using these magnet mounts in my car for a couple years. They have worked great on:
HTC Wildfire
Optimus 2X
Galaxy S3
Navigon SATNAV (much heavier than a smartphone)
Walkman MP3 Player
Anything with metal in it like a pen!
Nothing has ever fallen off even over potholes and rough country tracks. All wifi 3g bluetooth are unaffected but cant verify NFC as I dont use it.
The only glitch I spotted was that the orientation sensor on the wildfire didnt respond (if I turned the phone from portrait to landscape whilst attached it wouldnt rotate the screen), but the other phones didnt have that problem.
I love it. Even though my magnet is larger (about the size of a 50p), its discreet and effective. I would recommend to anyone.
I have always used the stick on ones not the clip on, but as long as they clip ok to your vent and you dont blast hot air directly to the phone it should be ok.

I use their X-Way model as part of my near perfect car mount solution.
So obviously, it all starts with the Tetrax X-Way. I mounted that directly to one of the vents in the middle of my car. It does block the vest quite a bit, but it's the perfect spot for me and doesn't involve any adhesive on my dash. At first, I tried attaching one of the little nipple things to the back of my phone directly. While this worked, it drove me nuts that I couldn't lay my phone flat on a table anymore. This became a problem when I accidentally bumped my S3 while it was sitting on a table and since there was less friction now, the thing went flying. So not good.
My solution was to pick up a dirt cheep slim case. That's how I ended up with the elago G5 Slim Fit Case. With the nipple attached to that, I could just slip my phone in/out of that and leave the case sitting in my arm rest compartment when not in use. Now I had the awesome form factor of my S3 and the ability to mount. So the next issue was the connection.
Like almost everyone else, I was using the cigarette lighter along with a curly charging cord that was 5x longer than it needed to be. Worse, the giant power wart that was now sticking out of my dash. Not only was this ugly, it was a pain in the but to store. What I really wanted to use was a small USB cable, 6-8 inches long, that could fit with my new case in my arm rest and a way to ditch the giant dash wart. The cable is easy enough to find, but how do I plug it in? With the Griffin Powerjolt Dual! While there are a bunch of USB port adaptors floating aorund, this was the first I found that would actually sit flush against the dash. This means I wouldn't have any stupid wart thing to deal with, the look of my dash wouldn't be thrown off, and since I don't smoke, I could just leave it in full time.
The big win in all of this is two fold. First, I could ditch the bulky plastic car mount garbage for a few thin and easy to store version. Second, I did the same thing (but with a different case) for my wife's Galaxy Nexus. Now we can both use the same mount depending on who's driving (or if we pick up a second X-Way, we can both charge and mount at the same time thanks to the dual ports on the Powerjolt) and save even more room in the car since we didn't need two giant device specific car mounts. The other minor bonus here is that the X-Way came with enough of those attachment nipples that I should be able to roll along for a few years using the same mounting system across multiple new devices.

My friend has this solution for his BB and loves it. I wasn't willing to pay the price the local Best Buy wanted. I found a different magnet system at my local Bell store.
Something similar to this. I stuck the large magnet to my dash and the other magnet is on my case. I've had zero issues with NFC. Bash cash mount kit imo.

Hoping to receive mine soon! Anyone else using it and has more thoughts to share?

So I got the vent mount version and it works great in my car. In my truck the clip does not fit the vent. I placed the circle towards the top of the phone like it says and it hangs in portrait. In the video it shows it going between portrait and landscape, it doesn't do that. You get one orientation unless you put the connector in the middle I would guess. Other than that it is perfect.

DIY mount

So a long time ago I posted a DIY I found on lifehackers well today I decided to do one myself.
All that was needed was a garmin car mount
HTC evo hard case
Something to cut with
double sided tape or crazy glue
Here are the pictures
Good to see my textbook came in handy for something lol

But seriously, nice work. looks clean.
Lol srry. Thank you. It would have been much cleaner if I had a cutting tool, I had to heat up the knive to cut the plastic. I must say that its the best mount I have came across, I would not think about spending that much money on the official mount

awesome work. looks mighty legit!!!!
I love this mount. I made one last year for my Hero, and this year I made a similar mount for my Evo with the ball joint Garmin bracket(or whatever its called) & belt clip holster. I borrowed my friends dremel and cut/melted the mount to fit together, then glued it with plastic weld. The one for the Evo I also bought a Garmin cigarette lighter dock, so i can now mount my phone on the windshield or near my stereo. I plan on posting up pictures in the near future.
Yeppz, the case I used was an evo beltclip I find it easier to release the phone from the dock unlike the snap on case. So far this beats all the mounts including the high end ones

well done thank you
Followed the pics and did this too, it's win.
Going to see if I can find a permanent base for my cars dash though. Works great attached to the window just too distracting for me because of how the car's setup.
Looks great, but for EVO owners going foward, you might want to look into this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/WINDSCREEN-CAR-...Accessories&hash=item483f2e94ff#ht_4457wt_902
I bought one and it works great and only $3.97.
Again, kudos on your skills and thanks for the info.

Best Car Mount - **Video Inside Updated 3-10-3012

I have never been a fan of car mounts, I just hate putting stuff on my window and the suction cups eventually fail. I've seen universal mounts that mount on your air vents but those are big and bulky and don't have the OEM look and feel. So I decided to make my own...

Lol with the exception of my Q5 all the vehicles I have owned have had video playback. As a matter a fact, my first car in 1999 had a custom monitor. Turning the channel on the radio is a distraction. You should YouTube "Vic Gundotra Mercedes". So it doesn't matter if your watching TV or not.

I got the car mount that fits in the CD player. Works awesome, best I've ever owned for any device. Very high quality. Easy to use. Vertical or horizontal. Also CD player in my car is at just the right height, I don't like the mounts for dash or windows.

That looks great! How well does it fit with your phone? I was never a fan of universal mounts, just because they tend to be bulky since they have to be a "one size fits all" solution. I prefer more of an OEM approach where its as slim as possible. I do like your setup though, thanks for sharing +1

Honestly it fits nice and snug. Also great because I can use any size case I want. The mount rotates 360 degrees and has padded clamps for the phone with an easy access eject button. For being an unheard brand, its definitely high quality and extremely durable/sturdy. I'd recommend it to anyone with a smart phone.

I've used the Mountek mounts now for nearly 2 years. Had it for my droidx. Also have other family members using it for the iPhone and GPS devices, etc. They work great and also allow a certain degree of angulation - maybe 15 degrees or so in addition to the 360 degree swivel feature. Can be used with any case and also leave the camera free for use if required.
That looks really good. I think I'm going to try and do something like that with my Pro Clips mount. I want to order the Nexus holder, but at $60 including shipping the thought of paying that makes me wanna puke.
I like the looks of the mount by the OP but with a case on the phone, it won't work. I bought the Arkon unit a few months ago and it is nice but big. The CD slot mount looks neat but does it does it hurt the slot opening in any way? There is usually a felt lining on the cd opening?

great work however having cold AC going over the hot CPU or GPU is not a good idea because condensation can build up and lead to corrosion over time.
Its why people don't cool there desktop computers with external air conditioners, if its just the fan blowing its fine.

Actually, The AC is de-humidified. That is why many de-foggers also turn the AC on with the heat to clear the windshield.
The CD player will not be harmed. There are 4 teeth that stick into the CD player only about a half an inch, not far enough to hurt the CD player. There is a knob on the bottom of the unit that you twist to tighten the grip of the teeth. Basically when tightening, two teeth are forced up and two down to make sure the harness is sturdy. The teeth are basically a soft plastic.

That's what I'm going to try. Bracketron offers several different AMPs to ball mount plates. I'd post a link but this is literally my first post.
I'm hoping one of those ball plates will fit into the GNex mount. I also bought short (2-3") 3.5mm audio and micro USB charging cables that I will then try bonding/fiberglassing to the cradle so I don't have to plug them in every time. And then cutting the top of the stupid mount off so I can slide the phone in from the top

the official samsung units have an amazing suction cup.
I had an official Samsung car dock for my P1000 Tablet, There was no way in hell that thing was ever going to fall off.
even sitting on the windshield in 40degC days (Australian summer), and cool night temp changes didn't move that sucker.
Hell, I had struggles getting it to release when I wanted it to release...
Samsung dont skimp on their kit... its why it costs so much more.
I have a proclipusa car mount. So I recently got the Regular Adjustable Holder with Tilt/Swivel here. You can get Proclipusa holders with the charging ports built-in as well specifically designed for the Note - but I wanted something I can use for future devices if needed. The adjustable holder works with my thin Rearth Ringke Slim case as well. I think I may need to add some extra padding to make it a little more snug and secure feeling. It seems to wobble a bit because the slot is a bit thicker than the Note (crazy thin btw).
I use a PHONEclip, which attaches the G-Note directly to the steering Wheel.
You can find detailed info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22252176&postcount=24
In the same thread also more info about the above mentioned 'breffo spiderpodium'
Went on Amazon, spiderpodium reviews were mixed, many found it to be very low quality construction.
That steering wheel clip sounds interesting, unfortunately I have a boxwave case on my phone. Probably wont fit.
Are there any US etailers selling the official Samsung one?

hahahaha!!! So true and so unintentionally funny to envision, in mid-air-bag-deployment-to-face-contact! lmao
I can see the coroner's quote now:
"There's a good chance he'd have survived the impact with no more than a contusion and a couple of scrapes, but the force of the air-bag drove his near tablet-sized device clear through his skull and out the back side of his spinal column in what appears to be less time than it takes a humming bird to make a single wing-flap."
hmmm, you have a point there. So it's a choice between convenience or safety, difficult decision...
To answer seriously, I've checked it on my car and I think that it isn't a problem. The PHONEclip is made from a very strong material. So in stead of breaking, I expect it to work like a hinge and simply turn over the top of the steering wheel.
Proclip = Brodit
IMHO
for all my previous and recent smartphones I ever used Proclip holders in my car(s)
The Proclip platform is specific to each car model and the holder(s) are specific to each smartphone. I am using active holders with charging and I am very satisfied with it every time.
No excluding with my newest Samsung Galaxy Note too
I have the Samsung Car mount, and I am very disappointed.
It is a pain to insert the phone in the very tight clips, then you have to slide the usb connector into the phone, an exercise that takes two hands.
Further it does not accomodate even the very thin Samsung flip cover.
It forces the phone into car mode, which requires voice input - which does not work. - at least with my voice. I cannot call 'Nora' it will only find Laura - and I don't have a strong accent. It has no means of understanding what 'Home' means.
And now, after a month, it appears that contacts inside the car unit are flakey - the phone goes crazy when I plug it in.
So great phone, but they screwed up royally on the car mount.
So where can I get this Samsung Car Mount?
Mountek
Mountek has a universal car mount that sits in your CD slot for around $20.

Car Mount/Docks

I've been searching high and low for a non-generic car mount/dock and I think I might have found something that will work. I just ordered the Motorola Atrix HD dock from amazon.
(link blocked)
Dimensions seem right..
Atrix; 5.26 x 2.75 x .33
Sprint Optimus G 5.19 x 2.71 x .33
I'll report back in two days when it gets here.
Hopes this helps....has anyone else found anything else that will work?
I have the 2011 model of the Sprint Universal Mount. With the Otterbox, this thing BARELY fits. But it still works very nicely
2012 model link is here
Yeah....saw that, and looked at a number of the "universal" mounts, but really wanted something that I could truly "dock" my phone into. I'm in and out of my car a lot during the day and don't want to hassle with plugging in the power cord each and every time. Thanks for the input.
NEGATIVE on the MOTOROLA ATRIX HD case....usb doesn't line up. darn.
Tetrax
Is anybody using any of the Tetrax mounts with the LGOG? (The system is preventing me from posting the hyperlink to the Tetrax site here, but it is tetrax.com.) If you don't need to have the phone charger automatically plugged in, I highly recommend this mount. You've never known convenience until you've put the phone in and take it off with only one hand :fingers-crossed:. Not to mention the it will stick to your car's dash (hard plastic parts preferred, as it will leave an indentation on soft plastic)

Yes I am using it right now, with this case, it fits fine with just a little bit of wiggle room to spare. For sure the Galaxy Note one will fit if you plan on getting a thick case like otterbox, but it might be too wide if you decided to go without a case?

That's what I had previously with my old phone. Unfortunately it doesn't work with the OG with case on. Plus the arm is too long which cause a lot of vibration when driving.
Clingo
I have the clingo and it works great with the otter commuter case
Had the Clingo too, bought it when it first came out. It worked well at the beginning, but after a few months in the summer heat (Southern California) the gel starts to degrade and start to leave a sticky residue on the back of my phone case. Got a replacement gel pad from Clingo, same thing happen by the next summer.

I'm thinking of ordering one from ProClipUSA. [sorry, I'm too nube to be allowed to post a link...] In the past I've used their mounts for my old Garmin Nuvi and later for my HTC EVO 4G (the WiMax model).
Unlike those mounts, which were excellent and solid as hell, the two available are not full custom for the Optimus. And I really loved that my EVO's mount also provided power when it was docked. I rarely bothered explicitly wall charging the EVO as it always got topped off during the office commutes.
Still... with a few tweaks for the Optimus' dimensions it might be enough for a secure mount. For long trips it looks like I should be able to power it with the car 12V charger from the bottom opening.
This is what I have and it is the best mount I have ever used. Iotte easy flex 2

Decent active cradle or charger friendly car holder

Has anyone found a decent car holder for the phone?
I spend most of my time in my van using the Z1 as my Sat nav so would like one that I can charge it with too...
Sony dropped the ball on their own holder, the one part covers the open magnetic charge port so would of been easy to have made it an active cradle... Tut tut sony!
Tried to view the brodit one but won't let me view their site on my phone for some reason...

A bit pricy but here you go

Every time I have upgraded a phone I also had to upgrade my car holder because I have always bought "official car dock" and therefore spend a pretty penny in these things. This time I decided to invest in quality universal holder. After some Googlin I found the Ram MOUNT system. It's a bit expensive but the quality is top notch and it will work with my future phone upgrades too.
What's special with this holder is that it consist of different part that you can upgrade depending your needs.
I bought this kit:

You can find some better deals from eBay thou.
I've used the Tetrax XWAY for the last 11 months with no problems at all!
http://www.tetrax.com/us/products/xway-line
you just get a cheap case and stick on a metal disc which comes with the pack and then you attach the X way to an air vent! Had Zero issues with the phone flinging off!
Here's some pics on my G+ https://plus.google.com/100283721448868062697/posts/b6KRyHgFx27
I've tried a fair few mounts, suction cups and all sorts and if you don't mind sticking a disc on the case or you can get a case you just want to use for the car then i can't recommend this enough!
Got the Brodit active mount. Charges quickly, and I've added a nfc sticker to it, to enable BT, etc when I put the phone in.

I bought this this windscreen mount specifically for z1 from amazon for £9, I've now modified it slightly by sticking a magnetic charging cable to the bottom with a bit of black sugru and so have an active dock ( which took less than 5 minutes to do)
The cable cost £5 on ebay, so I have a dedicated car dock which charges for my phone for £15

I'm looking for a new car holder for my Z1, currently I've got a universal one that sticks to the window and it's annoying as when I put the phone in and close it tight it then either activates the camera or volume keys!
Anyone recommend a decent windscreen holder that grips the phone at the top and bottom of the phone?

I just went on holiday in my camper van, I just used the magnetic charging dock (I just sat it on the dash board but you could use some foam tape to attach it to the dash) .. The magnetic dock holds the phone pretty solid.

That's not going to be cheap, plus it's a cd player and mine is in built to the dash..... I've just bought a holder off eBay for £5 it holds the device in top right and bottom right corner and on the left side where magnetic charger is, hopefully if it's stable enough I'll be fine as it doesn't appear to interfere with the charging port or the keys.

So this is the car holder I bought off eBay http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=121251759597 works well for £5!
Holds the phone sturdy without covering any ports etc.

So does anyone know any car holder that includes the magnetic charging system apart of the one from Brodit? Or any home workaround with the magnetic charging cable? It would be fine if it has the form factor of the official one (at the top of the dashboard).
I'm really desperate with this. :crying:
I've just received the Brodit active holder today with a ProClip for my Honda's A pillar. Not installed it yet but I'm really happy with the design and build of it.
I got myself one of these after systematically breaking or having forced upgrades of each of my previous ones: Arkon SM678 Removable No Glue Car Dash Mount for Extra Large Phones & 7" Tablets - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400436098579
It holds up to roughly a 8" tablet in landscape mode (which I use on long journeys - finally a use for that Samsung Tab 7.7), or phones larger even than a Z1 (I suspect the ZU would fit).
Actually glad it does not have a built in charger, means I can use a magnetic cable day-to-day when my Z1 is in, and swap out for the custom Galaxy Tab cable on long journeys.
