ohhh...dayum. Time to shop..lol

You don't need a new cable. Just a 5pin to 11pin adapter. Cost like 99p

you could do that way too, itll probably end up saving you $10 in the looong run. Or you can just buy the right, one cable, and not have as much hardware to connect and hiding. Not sure if that even matters for you but the wire mess can get out of control quickly.

Hit up monoprice for the 11-to-5. Theirs work just fine for cheap.

I've got the official Samsung S3 MHL adapter and the video is laggy while watching it on tv. I've tried everything from freezing every single unneeded app + putting the device in airplane mode + overclocking + doing a dance with dead goats and virgins during a full moon (make sure your blinds are closed you don't want a neighbor freaking out like mine did) and nothing helps.
Any suggestions?

That's just the way it is. Makes it a bit useless for games. Sorry about your goats, cheers for the virgins.

MHL adapter that supports charging

Seems like there are a few MHL adapters people have talks about here before. Of those, I've only found 2 with decent reviews.
http://amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Adapter-Samsung-Sensation/dp/B005JE3VYY
http://www.monoprice.com/products/p..._id=1083314&p_id=8675&seq=1&format=4#feedback
Can anyone who has bought either of these confirm whether they can charge the phone while it's playing video or games?
The reviews on Monoprice indicate that it throttles charging down to 500ma, which is probably not enough to sustain the ET4G while playing a game.
Yes, the monoprice adapter charges at the same time.
It's actually a feature that's built into the standard. When TVs come out that are compatible you will no longer use the adapter or power cable. You will use a single cable to mirror your phone's display and the TV will provide the power to charge it at the same time...

I saw these on ebay and they look a little different than the on that is made for the epic 4g touch.. When you connect it to the tv, is any part of the phone screen cut off? I bought a generic one and half of the notification bar is cut off at the top and then a little of the bottom.
I have this same one. Just FYI in my experience. I have watched several shows from phone on TV and while it does charge, I was slowly losing charge... So eventually My phone would have died. I'm talking like 15+% per 40 min shows. I'm using wall power adapter.

thoughts on HDMI/MHL

Engadged says the galaxy nexus has the same chip for MHL/HDMI as the galaxy s 2 and infuse 4g. Strange most people don't report it. Also being a google device I thought that everything on the phone would have its API for developers but I found nothing on android 4.0 reference about video output or multiple screen.
Older nexus were well documented in functionality or not?
I'm thinking if it could become a portable media center
https://twitter.com/#!/romainguy/status/127449572845957120
What is the XDA recommended MHL adapter? I'm assuming they are not going to add this into the box with the Nexus.
Probably samsung mhl is best bet. I think it can be had for $29 on amazon. Monoprice sells one and most reports have been good. A lot of people dont like the t action going on with the usb cinnection on it though.
I voided my warranty and your nexus.
Does MHL support analog audio output? Or is it digital audio via HDMI only?
EDIT: should've done some reading, looks like MHL supports digital audio only. But the Galaxy S apparently does have an analog audio line out sent using the same wires as the USB connector when it detects it's connected to the Samsung dock. I wonder if the Galaxy Nexus can do the same...

Yes, the one sold for the Galaxy S2 should work. If one wants a cheaper alternative they can check out this one from DealExtreme. The manufacturer claim they are using Samsung chips according to DX staff. One could throw in a USB OTG cable as well since I assume that won't be included in the box either.
I am thinking of getting the Micro USB to HDMI MHL Adapter from monoprice. According to the description you can charge the phone at the same time.

Even if uses more energy than supplied, the loss will still be slower. As for the nexus, i am at least hoping it will break even since omap has a dedicated iva3 chip.

So how does this work exactly? Sorry I've never seen the setup before. There is just one cable right? Is it split at the end to provide to outputs? One for the TV and one for power?

The ones i've seen is a micro usb cable that goes to a small box where there is another micro usb plug(for non-mhl compatible displays, mhl compatible displays should apparently be able to work without the extra power) and a HDMI plug.
Here's an example of one: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/micro-...2-i9100-i997-htc-g14-z710e-p510e-black-104139
I got the SGS 2 MHL adapter and it didn't work at first. I rebooted the phone and then it worked.
I was going to order an adapter from amazon last night but rethinking it im going to wait until the end of the month and get the desk dock which will have mhl support built in and has an hdmi port on the side for connecting to a tv or monitor.
Still ended up getting an HDMI lead from amazon for 49p though lol .

Hopefully they will start hitting ebay soon as hate seeing my phone laying on the desk rather than standing proudly like my HD2 did

Not possible, the MHL adapter projects what's on your s3's screen, so your tv shows some nice black when you turn off the screen

Thanks for sharing! Been waiting such a long time for a cheap alternative. This still isn't as cheap as the generic 5pin MHL though...

Yeah, I knew that, I comparing the price to the generic 5pin MHL adaptor which we could use if samsung didn't decide to change to 11pin.
I guess it will never be as cheap since its a niche product for the S3.
This might sound silly but my TV doesn't have a HDMI port (it's pretty old but still slim)
Is there any other type of converters like scart to micro usb (sounds unlikely)

Same here. After doing some research it looks like an unbranded Samsung MHL adapter for the S3. The picture isn't clear enough to get the model number for comparison, but I'm pretty sure after looking at the FCC markings and other things that don't line up with the new S2 MHL adapter. :good:
Ordered it a few mins ago
This one's $20 shipped.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-MHL-T...063258?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3f1c05845a
Looking forward to hearing feedback from someone who gets one of these generic adapters.
I spoke with Monoprice's customer service last week and they said they plan on having their own compatible S3 MHL cable before October. I'll probably wait until then as I know theirs will work and should be fairly cheap.
Down to $22 eh? Last I checked the knock-offs were $30, and the samsung official was $40 (now $35).
I'm going to get one of these 11pin mhl-hdmi cables when they finally drop down to $10 like the S2's is, mainly because the 5-to-11 adapter I'm using on my 5pin S2 cable is TOO WIDE for my incipio silicrylic case (and most others) so I have to bend the silicone down. So, fair warning about the adapter for the adapter
Has anybody received one of these from eBay yet? If so, how well does it work?
I've seen a few too many discussions regarding plugging in subpar adapters into these phones that have caused problems. So I may be a bit paranoid but I think I'll stick with official Samsung adapters. Good price though if it works.

I believe so. The hdmi is for the video/audio, and the USB is for charging, so you would have to connect to two ports, then you can plug into your micro USB in your phone. Most smart tv's nowadays have usb and allow for charging, so this is convenient as it will be right near the hdmi. I don't think they allow to charge with the tv off though, in case you were wondering like me. (Was planning on using this as my main charger, but not if tv has to be on to charge lol
Hi, today i received the adaptor but High bitrate Full HD video playback seems to have frames drop and GSM network drop on my n5 32Gb stock

Have you tried different HDMI cables?
Yup, I've tried 3 different HDMI cables of varying lengths. My only thought is to try a different TV... but that's kind of useless as I wanted to use it on the living room tv which is actually brand new in itself (only 1 month old). All of my other HDMI devices have no problems, but this is totally broken.
Is there much lag using the Slimport adapters?
I measured my wife's GS3 today through MHL by recording a running stopwatch app and the lag was minimal at 0.04s which made me think it would be great for gaming on the big screen. Thing is I found that when I ran an emulator the lag seemed to increase to a point where games were unplayable.
I'm thinking of getting a slimport for my nexus 5 for gaming mainly as I thought the delay would be a lot less than Miracast but I read somewhere that not only does the slimport affect any lag time between the phone and TV but also the TV itself. Just wondering if anyone our there has used the slimport or miracast for gaming with success?

I have not used it extensively (for gaming) but I have used it with a game called Beat Hazard and it works very well. Also works without problems with a game called Waking Mars. I have not played for more than 10 minutes mind you. I use the video output for XBMC (movies), which works splendidly.

[Q] MHL to HDMI adapter

Does anybody know of an MHL to HDMI adapter that works with the Galaxy Tab S? I have one for my wife's Galaxy SIII that outputs video but does not charge the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 that I have - it recognizes power but has the little no charging symbol over the battery. Just curious if anyone knows of an adapter that does both, displays video and charges the Tab S?
Thanks.

Hi,
I have the "official" Samsung MHL to HDMI adapter that I bought for my Galaxy S3. This adapter works also with my Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Tab S.
IIRC, you have to plug things in that order for it to work :
- Power to the MHL adapter
- HDMI to the TV
- HDMI to the MHL adapter
- MHL to the Android device
At least, that's how I'm doing it and it works... HDMI is displayed AND the tab is charged. I tried with the charging adapter that came with the Tab S.
Hope this helps.
BTW, my adapter looks like this one :
http://www.amazon.ca/Samsung-EPL-3F...70718&sr=8-1&keywords=samsung+s3+hdmi+adapter
I have a Fosmon adapter that does not work. Tried it your suggested way and nothing appears on the screen. You don't need to activate anything on the tab, do you?
I need this for next week. I wonder how fast amazon can get that one you use out to me.

You need to use one specific for Samsung. Their pinout is different and a normal MHL adapter will not work on Samsung hardware.

Looks like it will. I use the one below. The adaptors mean it will work with anything and I don't need a separate HDMI cord. It is also $10 cheaper.

Good deal. I needed it fast so I didnt have the luxury of waiting for a week+ for shipping. Fingers crossed mine works.

You don't need to activate anything on the tab, do you?

No, it worked the first time I tried without having to change any setting or launch any app.
Well I guess I'll have to try the adapter that dcoulombe referenced on Amazon. The adapter I have is the Cirago version but I guess the adapter I have just doesn't pass along enough power to the tablet to actually charge it. It works fine otherwise, as in it outputs to the TV fine, just doesn't charge the tablet. I'm guessing the Samsung version must pass along more power through the adapter to the tablet.
Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Have you ever found fully working adapter/cable? I've tried these two:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LL1LD1C/
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ESM3UVC/
and none of them works. First one does mirroring but only at 24Hz refresh rate but does not charge. 2nd one is not working at all, it does not charge Tab S (it does for S3) and no video output but maybe I got defective one.
if Sammy is changing the standard setup for a reason then i would like to know what that is. if its to sell their own stuff for profit then lets see the stuff???
since the Tab Pro release there has been NO updated adapters by Sammy and their website clearly does not show compatibility for most of this stuff past the S3
weird and i like most of you have bought many things to find half work as good enough for now at best

Thanks.

OK, I picked up a Futureshop one
http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/prod...spx?path=23867a5729eeb996a686a7ae91419bcben02
and on the packaging it states that it's for Samsung. I'll test it tonight and report back.

No problem. Any chance you could test to see if it streams and charges simultaneously? That seems to be the problem with a lot of these MHL adapters they will play video no problem but often not charge at the same time which makes the battery drain insanely fast.

i am 99.99% sure that we are not going to see what we have all searched the ebay and internet world for unless Sammy makes it and since our device has aged now i doubt.
i spent over $100 extra trying items with no luck

Sorry do you mean no cheap ebay amazon etc adapter will output video and charge at the same time. Only the adapter made by samsung will do this? I seen you with the same problem I had in another thread and am curious to what you have figured out.

i dont think you will find something to fully charge and video out. you will find charge at 1amp but that will just prolong your use but eventually run the battery out and you need to find video out with 2amp charge combined with Tab ability to recognize it which i do not believe you will find.

So right now my adapter shows no sign of it actually doing any charging. Is it possible that it is charging at the 1amp but just not displaying it?
Is the samung adapter the only one that can accept the 1amp charge?
I'll have to search for it. Not sure where it is.
