Guide Me fellow brethrens! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

I WANT to learn how to make my own kernel. Is there a guide some where here on xda where I can get started. I promise to give you a mother of all kernels if you brethrens help me get started. I will await a answer.

Someone should help this guy, just so we can have "smellykernals".

lawl! I guarantee I would make a kernel of all kernels. I have a passion for tweaking and coding. I have a keen eye for the slightest change in appearance and performance. 1 fps drop is nothing for all, for I... is life and death situation. brethrens.... bring me knowledge! And feast on the future kernel soon!

yup. seen it. But I want to do it alone. Just need a kick start.

any guidance is appreciated.

There are plenty of guides you can read. Kernel development isn't easy. It's not something you're gonna start having never done it before and just build yourself a kernel. The first smartphone kernel I ever built took me 6 months to get fully working and it was for a palm pre and I had experience building desktop kernels for various linux distros.
I like to break stuff!

The first kernels I did were based off of a guide from joeykrim and help from vampirefo. They are a PIA until you get used to it. Good luck with your endevors. Here is a decent guide to start with, change the device though. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1516051

There isnt any kickstart for making kernel for a phone if you havent built a kernel before. I would suggest looking at the community dev thread again, as most of the build process has already been gone over. Do you have a Linux distro running yet?

Looking for Mentor...

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this post, seemed like the most sensible spot. I used to be involved in OS development back when 2.2 was brand new and shiny. I forget most of what I did, then.
I am looking for someone who would be making a Galaxy Nexus ROM (_obviously_). I know I have to be running a Linux distro (Will be using Ubuntu) and know how to install/configure/use Ubuntu/terminal. I'm also very technologically inclined, and learn very quickly. I am also willing to simply study before and after files, note the effects, and learn that way.
There's not a whole lot I won't do, and there's a whole lot I can be/am good for. I also have many contacts from the old Liquid E days that would be able to help with any potential issues that arise as well.
Thank you in advance,
Matthew/Harness.

how-to guide for android in future?

I remember when I first started developing on android it would take me hours searching on google and xda just to find out how to compile a wifi module correctly or why the heck a kernel would not compile right and, though it brings a lot of satisfaction when you accomplish feats in rom making and development. I sometimes wish there was a how to guide I could reference when I first started out. Instead of searching hours and hours trying to figure it out on my own or on google. So I thought I might make a how to guide on a Basic compiling of a kernel and platform for the epic touch 4g and maybe expand in the future to more complex custom stuff. I just wanted to see how the community at xda would like a thread like this in the epic touch 4g forums. Before I start. Just to see how many people want to develop and learn about android and the linux kernel and deving for it.
So tell me what you think!!!
Bad idea or Genius idea!!!
Update: I am done with the how-to and I am just going to double check everything today and I well post it tommorow morning. (It well be posted before 8 o-clock PST.) It well be posted in android development section.
Update 2: I LIED! I decided to post it now instead of waiting untill tommorow!

I have a Epic touch 4g, a galaxy tab 10.1, and an original epic 4g, I hope to get guides to these three devices starting with the epic touch 4g. I really would love to expand this to more
devices because not every android kernel sources released from manufacturerers are and exactly the same (or complete). And also Various mods on a samsug epic touch 4g might not be configured the same as say on a htc evo 4g or something. So hopefully I soon can get more devices to test and make more guides.

That would be great! The more guides the better! The main compiling (which is what the guide well be on initially) should work fine. I well point it out if something is device specific in the guide.
Great idea! Please include step by step on how to properly compile framework-res.apk and other stock apks.....I'm able to edit images and XML but can't get the damn thong to compile without errors. I know a lot of other people run in to the same problem. Using apkmanager 4.9. Also how to use dependencies (if needed for Samsung). I searched everywhere but still get errors compiling, even for a simple XML edit. I never had those problems when working with the vibrant. I asked around but didn't get much feedback at all... Looking forward to this.

What doesn't:

This is a hacked up version of the Galaxy Tab 8.9's Honeycomb Rom and Jomeister's Isotope ICS libs with some of the files from the skyrocket to hercules conversion zip. Right now all it does is boot into the setup screen, that's it. I was bored and figured I'd give something a shot that isn't worked on for our phone.
Tweaks:
Lcd density set at 160.
What works:
The screen turns on.
It boots to setup.
What's broken:
Everything else...
Finally, flash at your own risk. If you find something is broken, figure out how to fix it. I'm not a dev, I'm a law student with a tech obsession. Hopefully, we can all learn from this project.

Why when it is open source if you read the news article all that's needed is a git cherry pick and build. Then its done.

Things are rarely that simple, not because cherry picks don't work, but because some people are in different circumstances than your own. My current phone is a HTC One running a stock kernel, and without more sources custom kernels and ROMs are something of a tricky business right now. I prefer stock when possible, so an Xposed-style framework patch is a good way of "cherry picking" what I would like in a workable manner.
Great that you're sharing the news, but you posted in every thread already and now opened a thread in dev section =/

My two cents...I know goast from the forums, and he is an advanced user and a great resource to me. He's obviously pumped up about halo, and rightly so (it's a pretty amazing innovation by PA team). I'm not attacking anyone, but I like to stay informed about new things, so I appreciated his blast out. Many devs here work demanding jobs, and donate their personal time to development, so this info may help them in this fragmented crazy fast paced world. I just wanted to thank goast for the info, and impart some positive energy here. I'm not a dev, nor am I an expert, but I share goast's passion for android and desire to learn more about it. To me, that's why I love xda...I have a commercially dead device that is still extremely viable thanks to all of the great work here. Ok, I'm done...everybody enjoy halo!

Unofficial CM 10.2

A week or so ago a user named geekcentercreations posted a CM 10.2 build but uploaded the wrong one. Has anyone heard from him on whether or not it is actually legit? If he uploaded the wrong one the correct one should have been uploaded already.

If you look at his twitter and stuff he posts about how he was going to start building a CM Rom and all, so I don't think it was a hoax.
I think it was a hoax. If he was a serious Dev that could get aosp on our devices before other he would at least know to wait until he had a bootable build before he makes a thread.

To be fair, it is being worked on. The only problem is that it seems that three separate people from the CM are working on it separately. One person is working on 10.2 and another 11 and the third is 10.2 as well. I am not sure why they don't just figure it out together.

I haven't really followed CM all too closely on other devices. But to me it sounds like the build they have is very close to at least a nightly, or am I wrong?
If the approach they are taking is to get it close to stable and then release it, I have absolutely no problem waiting. I think basically what I really want is a confirmation that says, "Hey were committed to getting the ROM out there, were not going to just scrap it because we can't get a few kinks to work".
That's my main issue, CM is supposed to be a community (at least, it was originally, before the main people sold out), open effort but many community and CM devs like to keep everything private and not share until they do all the work. Then they rant about people demanding source saying basically if you can't port everything from scratch like they have you have nothing to contribute. That selfish attitude sucks, it's anti-community and ultimately hurts progress. Plus they're all being vague about status and timeframes. I understand having a busy schedule and being uncertain, but that's all the more reason to share what you have, not to make asking for status and timeframes taboo and wait months being fed table scraps of updates. Releasing the source can only help the community, not hurt it. Meanwhile the CM/AOSP devs for the i717 Note were excellent, always providing status updates, links to source, frequent builds, and plenty of support.

If u want latest cm get any other device in the world. MOD EDITED profanity removed, I can flash 4.4 on my HTC sensation but not my note 3.. He released the hlte kernel after someone started trolling the cm community hard for a week a couple weeks ago. And he was upset. But so what... he's a maintainer then maintain bro or step aside. He has a kernel, no tree yet, and like 3 commits... I personally think he should step aside if he doesn't have time,,let someone else from cm develop for this device..

That's what I was referencing. How totally and completely unprofessional and against the spirit of a collaborative community. He comes off as a massive selfish douche rather than a trustworthy community developer in that rant. People want to help on the project and he just insults them.

Exactly what I thought when I read it.

I mean I agree with both parties. I understand why you would want to do it yourself and want to get most of the credit but I also see why the community is wanting to help.
Either way as long as I can get some CM before the end of the year I'll be happy.
The way this is going down, I'll just stick with Tweaked. My Jump upgrade will be available and the Note 4 will be out by the time they get it stable and then the waiting game starts all over. LOL
