[Q] Rooted 2.3.3 upgrade to 2.3.4? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a 100% stock 2.3.3 that's rooted. From my understanding, if I upgrade to 2.3.4 I will lose root. Is there a way to upgrade to 2.3.4 without losing root?

Yes use the app called "ota rootkeper".

Will I still have to run TB for all my apps & games? No biggie, just annoying lol.

Yes all ota rootkeeper all it does is hide super user from your carrier during your ota update. As long as you dont delete the titanium back folder on your sd card your fine.

OK cool. Last question, I think. As you can see in my screenshot, all boxes are checked except 1, and it looks to be the most important one. Is it? And Superuser has a survival function, does that one work? Or SuperSU's survival work?

It looks fine by me.

As for TB backups with the free version you can make batch backups and do batch restores....its what I did when going from verizon stock to Hogwart's COLA rom...just make sure app+data is chosen (should be by default) whwn backing up and restoring.
Sent from my R800x using xda app-developers app

Ya u can even restore backups from a nandroid, which is nice.

Ok, so i am confused. I have Superuser installed, with it's option checked for OTA Root Survival. As you can tell from the screenshot, Voodoo OTA Survival seems good to go. I re-installed my Mobile Care app so I can do the OTA update. Here is the issue: I check for updates, it says there is one, so I accept. After the download finishes, It reboots the phone to install the update. After it is "done" it reboots again to turn the phone on, at which time I get an "Error: Update failed" message. Nothing changes.
What am I doing wrong? Does having both Voodoo and Superuser checked for the Survival cause a conflict with the update? Or is something I have installed/removed since rooting preventing the update?

What is your carrier/model of play?
Sent from my R800x using xda app-developers app

Verizon and r800x.

Hmmm...as far as I know verizon pulled the 2.3.4 update because they had some pretty bad glitches with it. Then again I've stayed on 2.3.3 due to stability and more rom choices. I've had mobile care frozen/uninstalled using link2sd for a few months now simply because I found no reason to upgrade to 2.3.4 as there is much more support for 2.3.3, mainly from here lol.
Also if you have removed anything from the 2.3.3 I do not think you will be able to update to 2.3.4. I think it has something to do with system apps not being found...I really am not sure about it though.
Sent from my R800x using xda app-developers app

This can be difficult idk if verizon already patched their ota updates for their devices that prevents ota rootkeeper to be used properly. Idk know what to do in your situation. Cant you use flashtool to upgrade yourself to 2.3.4? Either way your going to lose root one way or another.

Ya I can use flashtool to go to 2.3.4 but it seems its either really difficult or impossible to root it. I have a few system apps still frozen, and I honestly don't remember if I removed any system apps.
Guess I'll just stay on 2.3.3 for now. Not like I'm having issues with it. Just got a wild hair to update for some reason lol.
Well thank u everyone for trying to help!

What browser are you using? Have you downloaded any apps with your browser? I seem to remember having the same, maybe when I was using Xscope.....

You know, I got those same things. I didn't think twice and just deleted them. I wonder. . .
lol those are leftovers from downloading through any browser. i get those in my downloads folder whenever i downloading something through my phone's internet. You will know when you get the official OTA. nothing will happen to your phone unless you get the pop-up saying there is an OTA available and ask if you would like to download and install it.
Just using the stock browser, have not downloaded anything in quite a while, defanitly not on the 30th?
I though about deleting them but figured i'd ask, besides if they were cache'd data from a browser download why would they be packaged?
Not saying i have something but just found it peculiar they are all packaged and in the root cache where a ota would show up right?
Looks like one is missing ?
OTA doesnt download anything until you approve it.

I believe it actually downloads the OTA and stores in cache before it prompts you. Don't quote me though, I've been wrong before lol

i did the 2.0.1 to 2.1 update on my wife's droid, it didnt download anything until after you approved to do the update. you can also see with the EVO froyo updates, it asks if you want to update over 4g/mobile/wifi or just wifi.
I had no idea what it was but I though maybe they were incrementally pushing pieces or something, I'm new to android, I figured it would probably be nothing but didnt want to delete something that could help someone.
If you think about it, if they pushed a few small pieces to your cache and the the last piece could parse it all and install it wouldnt that save alot of bandwidth for them? or at least even the load? Thats what made me ponder what it was. I'm sure its not browser cache or it wouldnt be a .apk it would probably be a sql db wouldnt it?
I tried to copy them to the root of my sd card but it wouldnt let me for whatever reasonthrough root explorer. maybe i'll copy them out over adb and extract the .apk just to see whats in it, That should tell me.
Anyway figured some other insight would be nice.

I thought someone from Unrevoked said on twitter to the evo users if you get the ota message to upgrade dont do it and the upgrade file would be stored it the root cache? heck iono i've slept since then.
I believe those are failed or canceled .apk downloads.
Why don't you just copy them to your pc and take a peak inside the apk with 7zip?

nope; stock
My phone downloading the update but I was rooted, so apparently it failed to verify and the installation was aborted.
Stock and still nothing (Denver, Sprint 32Gb S3)
Updated: 2.6Mb update, had to force it, wasn't available at 1030am but at 1131am it was (MST)
Says security updates, however, if the baseband is updated, doesn't this mean the radio is being updated?
I got the same installation aborted message but then when I check if the system is up to date it says it is.
16gb on the sprint network...received the update around 1pm est
I just got the notice, its a few megs but unable to install since im rooted. it tries to do it through their stock recovery so it has issues with cmw lol

I think he is too conditioned on locked bootloaders after an OTA. Lol
I managed to grab the update from my cache partition. At any rate i'm about to unroot and apply it then reroot, grab a nandroid and update my upcoming ROM with it.
Mine went to install and it froze at cwm but now my data keeps cutting off. Some Sprint logging on issue pops up. Even with nandroid restore back.

I'm running FreeGS3 but I guess that didn't matter to T-Mobile.
I searched the forums but didn't see any discussion of an OTA update. Where can I go to see the update files? I'm fully rooted and know my way around root explorer.
Well, I did fresh Nandroid and Titanium backups and then let it try to update. The phone rebooted into CWM recovery and attempted to apply the update. It failed due to some kind of signature problem. I then rebooted back and got a message saying the update failed and the previous state would be restored.
Before all this started I did have issues with low free space on the internal card (it seems to give a warning if less than 500MB is free). I also get renotified about a missed call after every reboot (even though I have cleared the notification before rebooting).
Could this be a phantom update caused by low storage space?
You can't apply the new ota updates if you're rooted and running a custom recovery. Devs are working already to get the flash able zip for us rooted people

Just to add to this, you can go into titanium backup & freeze software updater 1.0 & software updater 3.0 if you want to stop the update from coming through while your on a custom Rom. You can then wait for your rom to be updated shortly by the dev with the new base incorporated.

Definitely do a titanium backup first! I used ota root keeper to test how easy it was to go back and forth from rooted to temp un-root and titanium backup failed to startup afterwards. So basically I just reinstalled titanium and then it worked fine. So if you're going to use ota root keeper ...
Make Titanium backup first (should be a standard to all)
use OTA root keeper to backup su and then temp un-root
apply patch
then OTA root keeper to go back to root and delete su
If you have problems with titanium again, just reinstall
And if you end up not being able to go back to root...just re-root (but should not be a problem)

Install an app from that requires root, if the app requests root and you press allow and the app works you`re rooted. What recovery do you have, samsung or CWM?
Phones don`t modify themselves, people modify phones
@jalu147 Samsung bootloaders are always unlocked, unlike HTC.

For anyone who has received this, does root stay open and or the exploit still work? Important for safestrap working, but I guess honestly there's no need for that if this update is as solid as I suspect it will be.
Edit: Beaten on the question, sorry I didn't refresh
iDroidNow:
You could safestrap recovery backup your current build and then push backwards that way, if you really wanted, but you'd have to root on ICS.
Incidentally, does anyone know if OTA RootKeeper works on this?
