I should be able to flash a backup I made with CWM recovery in CWM recovery, correct? Or would I have to adb push it?
I moved to 4.2.1 but not a fan of it at this point and want to go back using a backup (4.1.2) I made with CWM, but it won't flash. So at this point I'm trying to save my photos, notes, texts, and my titanium backup of apps and do a complete wipe using wugs (unroot/relock then reroot/unlock). Or should I be able to get away with just doing a format on my sdcard/system/cache/data and data/media (options in CWM)? Since going to 4.2.1 I have also lost a significant amount of free space.
BTW I have tried TWRP before and went back because I didn't like the layout but damn if your recovery can't even handle its own backups what the hell is it good for? TWRP here I come again.

A lot of the following is probably overkill but what I'd do is...
1. Backup everything I wanted to keep when in Android 4.2.1 onto my PC (Nandroid backups, photos, music, etc.)
2. Flash the factory 4.1.2 image
3. Boot up to make sure it's working
4. Restore nandroid in CWM
Chances are there are easier ways of doing this but I'd be happy knowing that is 100% right then have the potential for it going wrong

Bud I have tried to flash it out of every folder I have access to in CWM Recovery
The folder's I have tried, after choosing install zip from sdcard:
sdcard/0/clockworkmod/backup/ - 4 backups in here but wont flash any of them - says no files found when I try to flash one
sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/ - can actually see 2 backups in here (ones I don't want, just wanted to see where they were placed in 4.2)
sdcard/legacy/ - no files found
But stupid me did just realize the CWM backups I have been creating aren't zips? So I need to figure out how to get to sdcard/clockworkmod/backup and place my backup folders here. So I will be able to see them when I choose Backup and Restore - Restore
CWM can't see the backups in the '0' folder, it stores them on /data/media (or is it /media/data??) so unless you have a file manager with root access you won't get them back

My my my you are the man. It looks like it is data/media/clockworkmod/backups.
I am going to try to Restore my latest 4.1.2 nandroid tonight, after I had a chance to back every thing up, but I'm guessing it's going to keep the current file structure though.
The best way to upgrade to 4.2.1 from 4.1.2 is
1.Flash all factory images from fastboot apart from recovery,@ recovery step flash twrp 2.3.3.0 and you are all set to no '/0' bug,
2. Downgrade to 4.1.2 ? Flash factory images of 4.1.2 , just keep the recovery as twrp 2.3.3.0, at present it is the best possible recovery for maguro for handling the '/0' bug , it doesnot delete the layout file.
And restoring nandroids in between the versions can make every file very clumsy, take some time and flash stock images to get rid of that.

After downgrading you will still have the /0/ folder with all data. So many apps wont recognize that the backups are there available to be restored. You can just point to the "new" backup location that now exists in the /0/ directory.
Example: Titanium backup will tell you there is no restore data unless you go into preference and point it to the right folder in /0/.
Example 2: Nova launcher will not see the backups. Manually move them via Root explorer or similar from the /0/data/ to the /data/
..and so on.
I guess I will be flashing the factory image then.

2. Format system/cache/sdcard just because
3. fastboot - factory image (4.1.2)
4. Phone should still be unlocked/rooted (on current bootloader/radios correct?)

Or use Wugs to take back to stock, then fastboot unlock, root, add CWM recovery might be the easier way at this point. Restore nandroid and everything else. Then add TWRP and remove CWM.
Sorry trying to talk this out with you guys and wrap my head around what I am in for. I know it's not hard, just frustrating to think I could possibly lose some things.

Not to be bossy but the latest version of TWRP seems to do a better job handling user folder /0. Its also touchscreen and [email protected]$$ so there is really no comparison....:highfive:
Yea I tried it, thought I was more comfortable with CWM and this bit me in the ass, so TWRP it is when I get everything straightened out

Hi all,
I have had my Note II for a day now and I love it but I seem to have an issue. I rooted and installed CWM 6.0.1.5 (modified version by Phil I believe) using Odin and I of course made a backup of my stock rooted ROM before I started flashing anything but when I tried to restore my Nand it says that it cant find the files and cant open the location. The CWM backup file IS there cause I can see it when I plug my phone into my computer but it wont restore and yes... I've tried EVERY restore option there is in CWM - Restore, Advanced Restore, Restore from External, Advanced Restore from External, so on and so on...
Can anyone tell my why I cant restore my Nandroid? This concerns me as well should I ever need to restore my backed up EFS as again, it just wont restore anything from CWM.
Anyone else with this issue or know what to do about it?

When I choose to flash anything from Internal SD it is now taking me to a list that shows /0, /obb and /legacy (or something like that) and then I have to choose /0 in order to gain access to my actual Internal files.
I actually have 2 of these sets of folders some how after flashing so now when I try and flash from Internal SD I have to choose /0 AND THEN ANOTHER /0 to access the internal card from CWM. This is quite weird and annoying to say the least. This behavior is also shown when searching my device using ANY file explorer and when I connect my phone to my computer as well - IE. I have all of these extra folders showing.
Can ANYONE explain why this is happening and how to avoid it if at all possible? Is this just something new in 4.2? I am currently running Jellybam 3.52 - 4.2.1 ROM.

I've seen articles regarding the backup function of CWM, the backup files have to be in the following path on either the Internal or External SD Card. I'll use the below path as an example for an external SD card.
externalsdcard/clockworkmod/backup/[What ever you want the backup to be]
When you use the restore function from CWM and navigate to Restore from External/Internal SD Card. It should come up with the name of the folder you chose in [What ever you want the backup to be] and be able to restore your Nandroid backup.

My Nand is in CWM. I dont use TWRP.
As I said... My backup is on my internal sd card in the exact same format as you described but when I go to CWM and try to restore it first says "cannot open directory" and then immediately says "no files found"
Ive been using CWM since my original SGS and I have never seen this happen before. I can see it in my File Explorer, I can see it on my computer when I plug in the device but I cant get CWM to find the file to restore it.
Im about as confused as it gets...
Im testing something right now... I am making a new backup of my Jellybeer ROM to my External SD card to see what happens. IF it will find the files after its done I will advise but I still dont get why it wont restore from my internal card...?
*EDIT* So it seems to have backed up to the ext. sd card and I can see this file when I choose to restore from ext. sd but... it was the FASTEST backup Ive ever seen. It literally took like 45 seconds if that so I hope its a full back up!
IF my memory serves me correctly... When I backed up my stock ROM (my initial back up), I checked for the restore when it was done and it was there but then I flashed Hyperdroid and then I flashed PACman and then tried to restore my original Nand and it wouldn't let me so I wonder if I flash something else (which i don't want to do right now cause Jellybeer is serving me well at the moment) am I going to lose the ability to flash my Nand again?

Thanks for the reply but... What would cause this to happen? Did you read my post where I backed up to my external sd card? Like I said... The backup literally only took like 45 seconds to complete which is weird unto itself.
What will flashing a stock ROM do to fix this? And when you say "stock" do you mean like "stock - unrooted"?

Chenglu is the one I used when I rooted my device by using Dr. Ketans guide and now I cant get ANY of my NAND backups to restore...
With regard to the /0 file issue - Yes... I am running a 4.2.+ CM10.1 based ROM so I understand that it creates those /0 files but it just keeps on creating them after flashing anything new!!!
Your issue is related to the new JB 4.2 and multi-user feature. CWM cannot find backups since they are moved to a different folder
The day you need your backup, just install a JB 4.1.2, move your /0 folder to root of sdcard and run your nandroid

So...you're saying that IF and when I need to restore my nand that I will have to install a 4.1.2 ROM first and then follow your instructions to move the /0 folder to the root of my sd card (i assume by using a file explorer of some kind in the 4.1.2 ROM itself?) and then flash my nand? Is that correct? Should I keep just any old 4.1.2 ROM on my device at all times for this purpose?
If so then what if I have multiple /0 files created as I do now? Currently I have 2 /0 folders and this seems to grow as I flash anything new. Do I then move ALL of the /0 folders to the root of my sd card before I can restore my nandroid backup?
Also... Why was I not able to restore from my external sd card using the option in your recovery either? I made a simple backup of my current 4.2.+ ROM to my external card and when I tried to restore it last night to test it said MD5 mismatch. Is this related to the 4.2 ROM issue as well?

delete 0 folder
flash cwm recovery with odin go into mounts
wipe caches and format system when done
power down then go into download mode
then flash stock img

What I did was... I flashed v6.0.2.7 via ODIN (which has 4.2.+ ROM support) and I am now FINALLY able to restore my Nand back ups!!! The only thing now is that I apparently have 3 /0 folders on my device and I REALLY just want to know how to get rid of the extra folders and to know how to keep them from being created altogether!!!
I have one that has ALL of the original .zip files, gapps, etc that I installed on my device, then I have one that has an efs backup on it somehow and has a couple of application folders in it and then I have one that is like stock.
Why are these being created and how can I get rid of them? This is driving me CRAZY!!!
I had the same issue this morning.
I fixed it by installing the aroma file manager addon in Phil's CWM recovery and using aroma to copy the clockworkmod folder out of the /0 folder and back to the root of the sd card.
Then when I went into backup and restore the backup was visible again.
Once you have a rom installed you shoudl just be able to plug in via usb and just browse the sd card on your computer to move everything back out of the /0 folder

You can install nandroid manager from playstore and you can fix nandroid md5 mismatch there or you can use terminal emulator to generate new md5 file in your nandroid (google it because i cant remember the command)

Is that cwm recovery on sdcard??? Please move it on your ext card and recover .
Or you got an md5 mismatch ? Use mismatch fixer or see my thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2681072

I having been having some major problems the last 2 weeks with any and all backups i create of my phone. I have tried to make backups of various Roms using both Rom Manager and also directly by flashing into recovery (CWM touch). Each time the backup is successfully made, but then when i try to flash the backup i get errors saying "file not found". I lost my stock rooted backup, a backup of CM10, a backup of Liquid Smooth, and a backup of JellyBam. Does anyone have any idea why my backups don't seem to work? This is incredibly frustrating as I lose all of data and have no security blanket should something go wrong. Every time i flash a new Rom i wipe Dalvik, Cache, and factory reset/wipe.
Anyone have any idea what's going on with the backups?
what versions of android have you been flashing and are you sure your on the latest recovery?

Thanks for the reply. believe liquid smooth was version 4.2 and the jellbam was 4.1.2. My stock was either 4.1.1 or 4.1.2, whichever the last update went to. As far as CWM, I am on 6.0.2.3.

Not sure if this is relevant in all this, but my Titanium Backup wasn't working on it's own either when I flashed any new Rom. It would not see any backups and I would have to go into the Preferences and scan for the folder that had backups in it as it did not automatically detect backups in whatever folder it defaults to. This is also a recent development.

I've tried searching and nothing relevant came up. Do you also have several folders that appear the same when you reboot into recovery? For example, I have a folder titled "0" that popped up around when the issue started. I have a CWM folder as a subfolder under "0" that appears to be identical to the CWM folder that is not in a subfolder. That's why i brought up the issue i am having with titanium backup, wondering if that has anything to do with anything.
I've tried flashing the backups from both the subfolder and the non-subfolder, and nothing seems to work. The only thing i can successfully do is do a complete wipe and reset and flash a new Rom from scratch off the zip.
If your flashing anything 4.2 related its highly recommended that you use twrp as your recovery because of how the files get condensed into that "0" folder.. Your probably going to have to hunt down your backups I'm sure they are somewhere in that 0 folder

I thought it might have to do with the folder issue, but i have tried flashing from the CWM, backup, and various other folders in both the "0" subfolder and the main folder. In both cases i get an error that say's file not found. That said, do you really think twrp would make a difference? I'm pretty new to android, so i'm not really familiar with it beyond knowing it's a recovery like cwm. I'd be willing to try it out if it wont jack up the little amount of cwm i do actually know and am familiar with. At least now i can flash a new Rom and start over with a titanium backup of files if shizz hits the fan.
The only thing I can think of is to copy and paste the clockworkmod folder from the 0 folder to the root folder and try the restore process from the root folder instead of the 0 sub folder. If that doesn't work I dunno bro

I'll give it a shot even though I've tried loading from the folder directly already.
How would i move it? I've actually tried using file manager and it doesnt let me. It says it can't move the file, or any file actually, from the "0" subfolder.
so i made some serious progress. I used ES file explorer instead of file explorer and it let me move the file for CWM from the "0" subfolder to the main folder. It said that it was going to overwrite everything in the main folder with the subfolder stuff. I accepted and then i dirty flashed a backup of the same Rom (in case the file would not be found again) that had previously not worked.
It actually ended up working. I am afraid to try to flash a backup after completely wiping b/c i dont want to go through the crap of setting everything up again tonight, but i will give it a go tomorrow and report back. So for some reason, backups can't be flashed from CWM from the "0" subfolder, and they can't be flashed from the main folder, unless you move the files from the "0" subfolder to the main folder.
Hope that makes sense to anyone that may have this problem.
If you have the time and are by a computer you can also just move everything out of the 0 folder into the root folder and just get rid of the 0 folder altogether and start from scratch. I think it has something to do with cwm and how they recognize the file system. Like I said you should give twrp a try its very good.

If i want to not only wipe system, data, cache but the /data/media partition as well before installing a new ROM, what's the least onerous method for restoring all my data after flashing the new ROM? currently all i know to do is backup my data, wipe everything, then restore factory image via adb, then copy zips to the device, flash desired ROM, then copy back data via adb or from dropbox after installing app

titanium backup is the easiest way.
just dont restore system apps.
1. Run a backup in titanium backup
2. Copy the contents of your /data/media partition to your PC via adb or MTP (this should include your TiBu backup)
3. Wipe System, Data, Userdata, and the caches via method of your choice
4. Copy the contents of your /data/media backup back to /data/media via adb
5. Use adb to push a ROM of your choosing to /data/media (assuming you didn't have one in your /data/media backup, and assuming you're not using fastboot to flash a stock image)
6. Flash away (Recovery, if needed, and System via either fastboot or CWM/TWRP)
7. Download TiBu from the Play Store
8. Restore non-system apps/data in TiBu
However, if you're going to make a backup of /data/media and then restore it immediately after wiping it, I have to ask why? It's a time consuming process (transferring gigs via adb is very slow) and would provide no benefit to your device.
Also, if you're going from Android 4.1.x to 4.2.x, make sure your /data/media backup goes back in /data/media/0, or the OS will not see the files as being on your "external" storage.

Using twrp I wipe cache, davlik, factory reset, and system and my sdcard is untouched. I was told by a dev to also delete the android folder in my sdcard using the twrp file manager.
No need to flash stock image when wiping everything just fast boot flash the rom you want and adb is the best way to restore your sdcard

I know, I know...I have this idea of after flashing many different ROMs and finding my keeper, that I would totally wipe the device and then install a super clean ROM, and start with a virgin /data/media partition, bringing back only what I want. I recognize that this is probably unnecessary and says more about my desire for neatnes than anything else.
But thanks for the detailed instructions. Until now, I have been using the GNex Toolkit downloaded from the sticky in the dev forum to handle all pushes and pulls and adb duties. I thought that to push a file to the device, it had to be in Android mode. This is why I found myself having to flash the stock rom just to copy back the contents of /data/media. It sounds like, from the posts in this thread, that I don't need to, that I should be able to copy the files from fastboot mode? Or do I temporarilty boot into an image to push files, then flash the ROM from TWRP. (I'm using TWRP 2.4.1.0, btw).
If I could avoid installing the factory ROM, just to copy back /data/media/, that's what I'm looking for. Do you know if this is possible using the GNex toolkit?

you have full ADB access within any custom recovery. toolkits not required.

I always wondered about this. Does the stock browser qualify as a system app? Should i not use titanium to restore any of the gapps?

The best option for titanium, is to select BATCH, RESTORE MISSING APPS+DATA
Go down the list and deselect anything you DONT want restored. everything else should be OK on that screen.
Also, make sure you have the pro license, otherwise batch jobs are a PITA
There is also an option in the MENU button - BACKUP TO XML
This option allows you to backup call logs, wifi networks, mms/sms, bookmarks separately from the other backups and works 100% going rom to rom.
Everybody is recommending TiBU, and I concur, but OP is talking about all the other contents of the sdcard..
I actually just did this today. I had been on cm10.1 but went back to cm10 for a while, getting the extra /0/ folder and all. I was going to just copy EVERYTHING over to my comp, but ended up just copying a few music folders and a few backup folders. After flashing cm10.1 and gapps, I formatted the sdcard. Now I'm transferring those few folders back. I had a FULL sdcard before, so it feels good to have some space, that is until I think of something I wanted that I didn't copy lol..
Hi guys. I decided to switch to rootbox today. I booted into TWRP this morning and took a backup of my stock rom. I named it stock05022013. then I loaded back into the system and took a titanium backup of all of my apps. Then I downloaded rootbox and gapps, got a GPS lock, opened GooManager and loaded the rootbox rom and gapps into the flash roms section, selected wipe data and wipe cache and factory reset and sent it on it's way.
but now my titanium backups are gone and so is my TWRP backup. What did I do wrong? Could it just be hiding somewhere? Am I sunk?
so many hours of puzzle quest 2 down the drain...

That was perfect. I flashed back to stock, deleted the folder labled 0, rebooted to recovery and I could see my two TWRP Backups. I restored my stock backup and I opened Titanium backup, and I was surpised to see that all my titanium backups are still on my SD card somewhere. I uploaded my backups to dropbox and then rebooted to recovery and restored my rootbox backup. When I got back into rootbox, I couldn't find the Titanium backups, so I downloaded them from dropbox and now I'm golden.
But I would like some clarification on where the hidden files are. This is the first android phone that I have had where storage between roms is not consistant, so I'm not sure how to deal with it. Part of me wants to wipe the storage partition entirely and start over... but I'm not even sure how to do that.
Yeah sorry I was in a rush when I typed that. It's a weird phenomenon. Every time you flash an AOSP rom it creates a folder marked 0 in the root of your sdcard, and both the rom and your recovery treat this as your "new" sdcard. So when you go to sdcard on an AOSP rom it's like going to /sdcard/0. All of your old files are in /sdcard but I don't know how to access them without going back to a stock rom.
What I do is, before I flash an AOSP rom I create the folder called 0 manually, and then I copy everything (make sure you check show hidden files) into the 0 folder. Then when you boot into recovery, TWRP thinks that the 0 folder is the root of your sdcard so if you make a backup it'll put it in /sdcard/0/TWRP. Then you can flash an AOSP rom and things will be where you expect them to be.
I recommend cutting and pasting into the zero folder, both for speed and avoiding duplication.
Hey quick question,
so I make a backup of my system for flashing. Then I move the backup onto a folder to my computer same with my titanium backup folder. So when I wipe and flash a new rom, I have all of my files for my system backup and my titanium backup on my phone. After I restore all of my apps after flashing the new rom, can I move the backup files and leave them on the computer as well as the system backup to save space? Is there anyway that I can still restore the system if it gets stuck in a bootloop - (besides flashing a new stock one)?
basically I want to store the system backup and the titanium backup on my computer so they are safe and because they take up about 4 gb of space on my phone.
I tried to be clear but let me know if I should further explain

I wouldn't backup system apps with titanium, because they can vary from rom to rom. As long as you properly wipe your phone before flashing, you shouldn't get bootloops(can still happen). If you get a bootloop, try pulling the battery 1st. If your phone still bootloops, you have to use download mode and ODIN to flash stock ROM.

Generally it's good to leave backups someplace where they won't get easily corrupted or lost. Since the S3 has a microsd slot, sure, keep them on your computer and move them over if necessary.
My SOP is to keep the current backup on the microsd, and store the backups on my computer. Then if I need to reflash/nandroid back, they're there, and if my microsd is corrupted I have a known good backup.

As long as you can get into your custom recovery after anything happens, backups will work. Make sure to backup system, data, and boot. If not and you have to flash using ODIN, like starting from scratch, you may have issues such as md5 mismatches.
