[ROOT] HTC Desire stuck on Bootscreen after evo³ - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I need some help solving my root problem with my European HTC Desire. I recently got the device itself from a friend. Since both noobs with Android and rooting/flashing, neither him nor me know if it is a branded phone or not. I assume, it's not branded since I couldn't see any brand on the device or in the menu so far. Also, it's still Froyo (Android 2.2) and looks pretty standard.

My aim is to get a CUSTOM ROM (preferably mild wild's cm7 JG) on the device. For rooting, I would like to use the unrevoked³ tool, since I didn't find a step-by-step instruction for revolutionary (besides, I don't like to give away my serial number...not trying being paranoid, but, you know..)
For the unrevoked method, I followed the Noob Proof Video Tutorial. I am stuck at "Waiting for reboot..." (in this video @ 2:02 min).
My guess, without knowing for certain what the problem was, is that my HTC Desire doesn't reboot correctly even without connecting it with USB-port, etc. It may be kinda broken (I had tons of bootloops, freezes, etc, pp). Maybe I somehow damaged the phone with the first try to root it? I tried anything I read here during the last 3 days (clear storage, soft reset, bootloader reboot, etc).
I need to get the battery out and then wait for good 10 Minutes, to even boot normally. Often, I just come to enter my PIN for the SIM card, when there's a reboot. Often it reboots even right after the second boot screen ("quietly brilliant").
MAybe it's a heated processor? idk, but even really long pauses wouldn't make it reboot correctly.
I disconnected the USB cable and took the battery out, then after 10 minutes, I put them back in and obviously evo³ continued the process from there ("system to settle...might take a minute" or sth similar). However, my device just rebooted there again and then I had the error code "Communications with phone unexpectedly interrupted. Try again."
This is logical, since it reboots when it wants but never when it's supposed to ****ty phoen ^^ (excuse my language)
Any ideas?

If your phone can boot normally, without any reboots, use revolutionary to s-off and install a custom recovery.

Apparantly my phone doesn't boot normally
Thx though
Edit: wow, now it's even stuck during the second bootscreen at "quie..." of "quietly brilliant"

Best would be to flash the 2.3 RUU (sig, put in on sd-card and boot in bootloader), and use revolutionary. You will lose all your data, but at least the phone will boot, and you will root it.
Well, except if unrevoked did install a custom recovery. Check that too.

No, unrevoked didn't make a custom recovery...the boot menu looks all the same.
However, things are really messed up now. I put the 2.3 RUU image on my SD-Card and booted it via bootloader. An update process began. After completion, the phone rebootet several times just up to the HTC-logo, vibrated about 20 times (maybe the 7-times stuff a couple of times in a row).
Nothing works now. I couldn't even boot anything now.
Also, my bootloader shows HBOOT 1.02.001 now.
Radio is 5.17.05.23
Need help!
Edit: after point 9 in the picture, the device reboots but doesn't boto further than the HTC Logo. THen it vibrates 7 times until it reboots again, then it vibrates 7 times until it reboots again...and so on, and so on...all in a loop.
Edit 2: after having the phone rested on my table over night, this morning I put the battery back in and it worked...a bit. It booted correctly and I configured the settings (debugging-mode, etc). However, trying to do unrevoked again, the device stuck at rebooting again.
Still need help, plz
Edit 3: so desperate --> plz help

You don't run unrevoked on it. If it's still in a bootloop, then flash the ruu again, then use Revolutionary to s-off. DO NOT USE OR DO ANYTHING ELSE.
1. Flash the RUU again.
2. Quick configure.
3. Use revolutionary.io.
4. Install a custom rom.

Okay, and where do I get the beta key from? I mean, I am supposed to put my S/N somewhere, but I don't know where.
Sorry, but I couldn't find any instruction on that.
Edit: my bad, I had javascript disabled
Tried it again: SUCCESS!!!
How do I get a Custom ROM on the device now? Can I continue at STEP FIVE - Partitioning Your Sd Card With Gparted in this Noob Proof Video Tutorial or does revolutionary already has some of those further steps included (like preparing SD-card, etc)?
Edit 2:
Okay, revolutionary doesn't root, it just makes S-OFF. I found this perfect step-to-step guide which is in German, though. Sorry for that...

So it worked. You're welcome.
To root, you either install a custom rom from recovery, or you stay stock, and flash SuperSU from recovery.

Scroll down and download the CWM flashable zip.

Well, it worked so far...I rooted und S-OFFed it, I think I even updated the radio to 32.54.00.32U_5.14.05.17 via the app "ROM Manager".
Now I try to partition the SD card, since doing that via ROM Manager from within the phone didn't work, BECAUSE MY PHOEN STILL DOESN'T BOOT CORRECTLY :/
(Sorry, not shouting at you...just let stuff out) ^^
Okay, I'm stuck with partitioning. Currently my Bootloader-Menu shows me that I have HBOOT 6.93-1002. Should I go to http://alpharev.nl/ and rename that
PB99IMG_cm7r2.zip to PB99IMG.zip and boot the device? What is this bravo_alphaspl-cm7r2.img?
I'm so sorry, but I think I messed everything up. Arrrgh

cm7r2 hboot is a different phone memory layout. Stock hboot has 250 mb system, cm7r2 has less system alocated memory, for smaller roms, and gives you more data space.
If you want to patition your sd-card, install 4ext recovery.

Yes, I want to do that (even with 4ext recovery). My questions herefor is, if
1) this is within the correct sequence (since I still doesn't have the mildwild cm7 custom ROM installed yet)
2) how I do it with 4ext? do I need to rename the files given at http://alpharev.nl/ ?
3) when I successfully partitioned the SD-card, how do I continue? There are 2 Parts of the mildwild cm7 custom rom...
Thx in advance
Edit: I did anything as suggested in the instructions (put it on SD-card, update yes, reboot no). Then I chose "Recovery" but nothing happens. THe phone is just stuck on the HTC-logo bootscreen :/
Edit 2: okay I followed abaaabbbs instructions in another thread/your sig and installed fastboot via adb. (See attch.)
Now I need to wait a while with battery removed since my phone doens't boot at all. I can only enter bootloader menu etc, but not regular boot to android on phone itself. always stuck with HTC-logo and/or vibrating 7 times , then rebooting to htc-logo again... :/

I am still stuck with 4ext (see my screenshot in my last post).
I can't tell if it worked. It seemed to work, but I can't boot any further than into the bootloader-menu :/
Shouldn't formatting take a while? It jsut took 1s via adb
MAybe I installed the wrong radio beforehand? I am so lost ...
Shouldn't my HBOOT say CM7r2 instead of 6.93.1002 ?
I can't enter recovery at all...
It booted...once. To the regular android menu...still it doesn't boot to recovery at all...should I re-install recovery? like CWM?

As above, I want to install mildwild cm7. I would prefer to isntall 4ext instead of CWM again....

I'm on mildwild 7 great rom yes I would recommend 4ext recovery, have u downloaded all parts of mildwild an put them on the root of ur SD card

Shouldn't I change HBOOT to cm7r2 first and make the partitions with 4ext first?
Or do I do it all in one step?
Edit: in one of the seldom times the phone actually booted to regular android, I installed the 4ext recovery again - this time via astro data manager (installed the 4ext-recovery-APK from SD-card). Well, when I enter the bootloader and chose "RECOVERY", it still is stuck at the HTC-Logo...

[Q] help!! files cannot be found in clockworkmod recovery.

Hey everyone. I need help here, I am still a noob. Currently I am using a htc desire. i managed to root my desire after setting the install location back to 0. Previously i did what this website ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13557827#post13557827) said, to move my apps to sd since i am still using unrooted stock rom.
Apparently, after rooting, the clockworkmod recovery was not installed properly. it says that some files cannot be found. So i end up rebooting the device.
this is what that is shown in the recovery mode.

udK's thread on the clockworkmodrecovery. But the same things as above still appear on the recovery screen. i also downloaded the update.zip file from leedriod and update thru zip from recovery mode. the same thing is shown on the screen. So, Can i still use the clockworkmod recovery to flash custom rom? P.S. i had rooted my desire, the next thing left to do is to S-OFF my desire, partition my sd card and flash the custom rom. What should i do next?
this is the information when i check my hboot version.

Yes you can give that a try though, I highly doubt it has to do with the recovery itself as you were able to start CWM.
You have PVT4 device, which means CWM 2.5.0.7 won't work on it. Either use AmonRa 2.0.1 or CWM 3.x.x.x

But my desire had never been rooted before until yesterday. The only thing I did was changing the install location via pc for unrooted stock Rom. But I did not change the location back when I start to root my desire. After that I change the location back to 0 and the root was successful until the installation of CWM recovery.

I had exactly the same thing about a week ago and in the end used alpharev

If you can't boot into CD then your in a bit of trouble trying to use the CD option ?
Maybe the USB option might work for you, all i had to do on my pc was F12 on boot select cd once the screen went dark plugged my phone in and followed the onscreen instructions really was that simple.
Have you actually shut down the PC rather than restart ?

[Q] Cannot access Clockwork on S-off Desire PVT4

Hello,
I'm a real newbie and decided to root my Desire PVT4. The problem is that after that I decided to go back to the stock ROM and here's what happened:
1. In the beginning I rooted it with unrEVOked.
2. Then I used alpharev 1.8 to turn S-off
3. Then I played with various ROMs after I backed up my stock ROM from ROM Manager (don't know if that's called Nandroid backup).
4. But this morning I flashed a different HBOOT (first one for Oxygen, then one for Cyanogen) to the phone and from then on didn't manage to restore the stock ROM at all, I tried using PB99IMG_stock from alpharev's website but that didn't work. The phone was still working.
5. So I decided to flash what I think it's called RUU which I downloaded separately. It loaded in HBOOT and said it cannot change bootloader (probably because I've left it S-OFF) but itand then finalized it's thing.
6. Now when I turn it on normally it loads the white HTC screen and then gives me a phone with a red triangle sign in it.
7. When I turn it on with the power key + volume down key it loads HBOOT but I cannot access Recovery to flash another ROM.
Can you tell me if there's a way I can flash a recovery tool? And if yes - is there a way to turn S-ON back on that phone in order to install a stock ROM?
Thanks
I had the same problem a while back. And I am still a noob.. but this is how I fixed it... I ran an ruu just like u did to fix a bad partition. When u do that it overwrites ur recovery partition an u loose root and clockworkmod. So now u should just be able to run unrevoked again an see if that fixes it!
Let me know if it helps!
Thank you, but does unrEVOked work when there's no access to the Android itself?
EDIT: I managed to make it run - just flashed the stock HBOOT from alpharev and then reinstalled the RUU from the HBOOT. But why is it running now, the phone is S-OFF and it now DOESN'T have root? Is there a way to remove S-OFF or it's not worth bothering?
Hmm.. I would have thought unrevoking it would have turned it to s-on.. but thats beyond me. I think if you google "Unrevoked Forever" they have something called s-on that turns it back on. but i dont think they have it for desire.. But you have to have root access and Clockworkmod i believe.
I have it running now, but like you said - couldn't find a way to turn it S-ON with Unrevoked Forever.
Clockworkmod recocvery does not work on pvt4 desires. You have to flash amonra recovery. You are s-off, so you can do it via fastboot.
Lol just a heads up. Unrevoked forever doesn't work for gsm.
Swyped...
Clockwork DOES work with PVT4 phones. I have one and, so I know. I used it to flash yesterday (if someone wants to do a guide on how to get Amon-RA, then I'm all for that, please post it)
Download ROM Manager, if you can get into your phone and you can boot to CWM from there.
When I used AlphaRev 1.8 to S-OFF it installed Clockwork for me.
However, there's a thread here that guides you through S-OFF'ing, and there's a bit at the bottom of the first post about losing recovery and how to get it back.
How to flash your recovery using ClockWork's image :
Download Clockworkmod 2.5.0.7 recovery image from official AlphaRev thread for bravo.
Move the file into "C:\android-sdk-windows\tools" (default sdk android folder's installation).
Verify MD5 checksum of the image with a freeware like HashCalc or something (IMPORTANT !).
Go to the main menu of your AlphaRev HBOOT (turn on your device with return button pressed).
Go to "FASTBOOT" mode.
Go to your computer and open a new terminal (Administrator privileges required if Windows Vista or 7).
Enter exactly this (without ") : "fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-bravo.img".
Now you will have a ClockWork Recovery image installed and working
Note 2 : If your device freeze on boot logo, apply your Nandroid backup that your did before S-OFF.. that should do the trick.

you are still s-on cause the new alpharev hboots are made this way (so the ruu doesnt overwrtie them)
if you want to S-ON download bravo_downgrade from alpharev.nl, flash it using fastboot or PB99IMG method and then run a RUU
if you want to go-on with custom roms just flash new recovery image with fastboot and then a custom rom, you dont even need to root your current rom
Thank you all, your advices really helped me. Thanks!

At first, go back to stock ruu to make sure your phone is unrooted. And now, flash amonra with unrevoked, maybe this will work.
Here you have the how to:
Download: AmonRA 2.0.0
md5sum: 4d6d17dcddc632579dcf88af6fbde0e1 - check it after downloading to make sure the file is not corrupted.
I guess all drivers are still installed (hboot, htc sync drivers) correctly?!
So put your phone again in "only charge" (plus "never ask for connection"), enable "again usb debug mode" and set again "unknown sources" (like when running the first unrevoked).
Now reboot your desire, just to be sure, because sometimes when the phone is running too long, some processes awkward.
When your desire is rebooted successfully, start unrevoked. Before connecting your phone to your computer again, press "file>custom recovery". Now choose the downloaded amonra recovery.
Then connect your phone to your computer and run the unrevoked process again.
When this is finished, try to boot into recovery again.

[Q] probelm in rooting & flashing recovery

Sirs,
I need your help for my problem.
I tried to root & flash ClockworkMod Recovery image by using UnrEVOked_3.31. so by mistake the image file for ClockworkMod was corrupted. So during rooting & recovery process and after several reboot of my phone "HTC Desire", the UnrEVOked_3.31 said fail can't flash recovery image.
Then after I repeated the process again but by valid and good file image of recovery. but the process did not success, UnrEVOked_3.31 said failure.
Here, I stop and check my phone, it is working fine and I found Superuser app in application, So What does that mean, Is my phone rooted?
also, I went to HBOOT, then I selected RECOVERY in there, I saw HTC sing for part of second then return back to Hboot.
My desire information: SLCD display, Hboot v 0.93, S-ON, android 2.2

If You have Superuser app in application Your phone should be rooted , but if You can't open recovery something is wrong. Mayby try unroot phone to stock, and root again.
2) Or You can s-off with revolutionary and flash recovery with fastboot.

Thanks for your kindly help.
before just half hour, I decided the following steps:
1.copy from SD the recovey v.2.5 have been downloaded from Rom Manager .
2.disable SIM lock and screen lock
3.use UnrEVOked_3.31 again for last time to flash recovery.
4.never touch phone until finish.
So, this time I sucessed and I flashed the recovery well.
You can use Alpharev's tool also, so go S-OFF and to use a new partition table with more data space.

To use alpharev, you have to be rooted.
@OP:
Which error message did you get when flashing?
Anyway, I recommend to use revolutionary (you get root and S-OFF in two very easy steps) :

BUT read documentary page before doing anything.
SwiftKeyed from CyanogenMod with Transparent XDA App

[Q] Rooted Desire Can't install a2sd , can't gain S-OFF,can't flash new recovery

Hi everyone,
I had my HTC Desire rooted and running CyanogenMod 7 since a couple of years ago.
I remeber I used Unrevoked to root it but I can't tell if I did s-off it back then.
All those years I was able to partially move the apps to the SD withou much effort.
My nightmare begun when I recently flashed the CM10.1 VJ Jelly Bean 4.2.2 v6.3 ROM
The problem is I am not able to install a2sd and overcome HTC Desire's lack of memory.
When exectuing "a2sd install" I realized I didn't had a sd-ext partition.
So, next step would be to partition the 4Gb SDCard half FAT32 , half EXT4.
I have tried to do it using several Windows apps (Easeus Partition Master, Minitool Partition Edition) , also with Gparted on Ubuntu thru VMWare . In any of those cases the phone wouldn't recognize the SD , neither inside the system , neither in recovery . It is detected as damaged and I must reformat thru the System in order to use the SD .
My current recovery is ClockWorkMod Recovery 2.5.0.7 and I can't partition thru it.
As recommended in this thread I had tried to flash the latest 4ext Recovery using fastboot in the command prompt but I have no success, probably because the phone isn't S-OFF.
Ok. So I tried to gain S-OFF using Revolutionary. Also with no success.
I was getting the following message:
"Sending in Caroline...
Retrieving Caroline from certain doom...
Retrying Caroline...
Caroline failed, but had this to say: entation fault"
As suggested in that forum I have tried flashing a Rooted gingerbread stock sense Rom (HTC_Oficial_Stock_2.3.3_signed , downloaded from that forum) and use Revolutionary . Also no success.
I kept receiving "failed to get root" message .
I have tried using AlphaRev 1.8 and Unrevoked 3. No success at all.
I flashed back the CM10 VJ Jelly Bean Rom. Tried it all again.
And still the same results.
I am probably missing some step or some information, althought I had read different forums during the whole weekend.
There is any good soul out there that could help me ?
Some info about the mobile that may be useful:
Bravo PVT4 Ship S-On
HBoot 0.93.001
ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.0.7

lol did you even read his post?!? His problem is that he cant get s-off cause revolutionary is giving errors.
From what i read it seems like you have done everything correctly except using those windows tools for partitioning. Use this guide for partitioning. But like you said, you will first need s-off to flash 4ext and partition.
You could try flashing this ruu through hboot. Put the zip on the root of your sd card (dont rename it) and then boot the phone into the bootloader using volume down + power. It will search for the file, and will ask you if you want to install it. Press volume up and user power to select yes, and then reboot. After flashing the ruu successfully try running revolutionary again, and see if it works.

Thank you very much chromium96 !
Everything is rocking and rolling . The "key" I was missing was to flash the RUU . After that Revolutionary worked just fine, I was able to S-OFF the phone , flahed 4Ext, partitioned my SD . and right now I'm downloading Paranoid Android 3.56 to give it a try.
