Is it possible to connect GN via HDMI to HD TV and
1) make it output at 720p or 1080p
2) use tablet style desktop AND
3) turn off AMOLED while displaying on TV.
EDIT: I'm not asking about mirroring. I know it's possible. I want external, alternative display that will render at native 720p (ICS Tablet mode), not enlarge 800x480 to 1280x720. Hardware is more than capable, because we have tablets at that resolution with the same hw.
EDIT: My mistake about upscaling 1st and 2nd thing solved, how about 3)?
EDIT: Galaxy Tab dimms the screen, which would mean zero Watts on GN, but why GN doesn't dimm the AMOLED when using MHL?

well, or standby or off, whichever you prefer The point is having the display turned off while using the HTPC on the TV. Basically, if you connect BT mouse and keyboard, you'd get perfectly silent HTPC.

Okay. I forgot you were the OP. You can't turn tge screen off in mirror mode from what I have read.
People actually want to turn it off because with the mhl adapter on there is not enough current left over to charge the phone. The phone reports usb charging and will ultimatly run out of battery.
Also the navigation buttons will appear on screen all the time unless you are playing full screen video. If you play games the buttons will appear on screen also.
Anyone else getting a dark picture when using the MHL adapter playing movies? I have been using it for the last few days and am very disappointed with the quality. Known fixes?

Simple answer: No.
Long answer: The galaxy nexus has a native resolution of 1280x720, so there would be no "enlargement" when you are outputting to a 720p screen. Not sure where you got 800x480 from
To enable "Tablet" mode, you would just have to change the screen density to 240 or below. This just requires an app and a reboot.

You're right, I forgot about 1280x720 native resolution. So the only thing missing is disable AMOLED while mirroring on TV.

I think thats a limitation to HDMI mirroring unfortunately. Its kind of stupid since the battery drain on the Nexus is ridiculous when MHL is connected.

I can tell you from my Galaxy Tab 10.1 Honeycomb Tablet, which also uses MHL to output video to a HDTV, that it dimms the screen but the screen stays on all the time. Seems to be the same on the Galaxy S2 and now also on the Galaxy Nexus, screen has to stay on. But I'm sure some profile app can adjust the brightness to the lowest setting automatically to "save" the OLEDs and power.

If it dimms the screen to the lowest level, by design it shouldn't waste any energy because GN is AMOLED, and Galaxy Tab is LCD which can't totally turn off the pixels. The question is now why GN doesn't dimm the screen

That plus, the phone MAY die after a few hours since the MHL adapter uses too much juice.
MHL provides power from the TV (not that much). You'd want to buy an MHL adapter (microUSB-HDMI) with a second charge port. Thus charge the phone from a wall plus provide video out.
Changing the DPI is best when using HDMI out so everything doesn't look enormous, but requires a reset of the device. Also the screen will stay on the whole time because the HDMI out is mirroring what is on the screen. Off screen = black hdmi out.
A bluetooth keyboard and mouse are also fun. Plus a PS3 DualShock 3. You got yourself a little PC.
I heard Netflix is weird about streaming movies over HDMI, along with Movies rented from the Market.
Using the setup above (keyboard, mouse, gamepad) is a great setup for playing emulators on your TV or just surfing the internet.

The way it was explained to me is that the MHL adapter will not even work without the USB plug connected to the MHL adapter. The phone, no matter it connected to a computer's USB or directly to a wall outlet, reports USB charging.
Everyone reports that the battery will eventually die since the charging isn't enough to power the entire phone, BT, Wifi, screen, and any hard computing (emulation).
Some solutions are suggested to use the pogo pins to supply the charge directly to the phone.
Perhaps a true MHL TV will supply enough current to the Nexus via the HDMI cable. Who knows.
Maybe a charge only cable could power the MHL adapter and provide enough current to the Nexus? Maybe Samsung's official portrait dock somehow someway provides AC outlet charging to the phone? We shall see.
All I know is that it's not practical to have the phone die when you have it plugged into AC. It reminds me of the crap car chargers that don't provide enough current to run GPS and charge the phone. Imagine if laptops worked the same way? Is this MHL charging situation an oversight or does Samsung have a product for this?

This is why the G2x with its built in HDMI port was flawless. You could charge it while using it. I haven't used MHL but remember reading that the power sent from the TV wasn't enough to keep it up and required one with a charging port.
Perhaps a different charger. I noticed using my Transformer wall adapter with a micro USB cable while playing Order and Chaos, when I'm done the phones fully charged.
Using stock and other chargers the battery either barely charges or depletes.
Maybe the chargers used aren't putting enough out.

I have a normal tv with video in/out ports. Is it possible to connect SGS2 to a normal tv (not a HD one) using the MHL cable? I have seen a video on YouTube where someone has connected the Galaxy S with a cable in 3.5 mm audio port of the mobile to a tv set for a video output. Will this be possible with SG2?

AS far as i know this is not Possibile in Galaxy S2.
U can connect ur HD TV with HDMI Cable, but not standard TV with 3.5mm Jack.
i Dont know why SAMSUNG hasnt given this feature on GS2, it would be great if that feature was there.

MHL outputs a digital signal.
Standard TVs that do not have HDMI, with RCA jacks, take in an analog signal.
Something needs to convert the signal, so you need a Digital to Analog Converter, or DAC.

Probably because it would take more hardware to do so. Which increases production costs, and would have made the phone larger. There is a ton of stuff crammed into the phone as it is. It is basically a pocket sized computer.
If you can afford this phone, how can you not afford a TV that has an HDMI input?
I connected the MHL cable to a VISIO 720p television and it didn't work, I suppose that MHL sends 1080i/p signals only and your television must, at least, be able to handle this resolution and rescale it.

Not true. Any tv with an HDMI input will work. Doesn't have to be 1080i/p. Did you plug in a power source?

Yes, I just got a complete greenish screen. On the other hand all FullHD capable televisions I tested worked perfectly.

Huh. That's very weird. There shouldn't be an issue with plugging it into a 720p. In fact, I don't think the video output will even be 720p, let alone 1080i/p, unless the output is a video that is that resolution.

I think either the GS2 or the MHL adapter will upscale the image to 1080 regardless the resolution supported by the TV. But it's in fact weird because HD ready should support at least 1080i.
I have seen mini-USB to composite output cable (audio -left and right seperated- and S-Video output cables) for SGS2 on a shopping site but couldn't remember which one now. So it must be possible.

That could be. I can't test, as it works on I everything own... I don't own a TV or monitor that is less than 1080p.

I have my doubts about this - at least, the part that it was for an SGS2. MHL is a digital signal. S-Video is analog. So either the cable was REALLY expensive, or maybe they were trying to pass off a micro-USB to S-Video cable that it (falsely) works for the SGS2? Or it was actually for an SGS1?
The green screen on MHL/HDMI output happens, because of non HDCP compliant TV. All content that we get out of the USB to HDMI adapter is copy protected (HDCP).
I noticed this while I wanted to connect it to as HDMI to SDI converter. Also no capture card will accept this signal. Only HDCP TV and monitor will work.
I'm trying to figure out now how I can get 1080p desktop and gallery output.

My point above, is that the standard MHL adapter is only like $15. So it would be an additional cost to get ANOTHER adapter to plug that into a TV without an HDMI input. So $40 for that whole get-up would be more expensive. Less expensive than I thought it would be, but still more.
And based on what erzyk says in post 17, there is no guarantee this would work due to standard TVs not being HDCP compliant. But I'm just speculating.
Someone could buy this $40 mystery cable and test it out, I guess. It's just not gonna be me.

I'm using the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) to give lectures (using the LectureNotes app to write during the lectures). I need to be able to connect it to typical VGA projector. Thought it might help others to know what accessories worked to do this:
Samsung MHL to HDMI adapter (model ET-H10FAUWE)
HDMI to VGA + Audio Converter (made by Neet, bought on amazon)
Optional: MoKo Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition Case - Ultra Slim Lightweight Smart-shell Stand Case
The MHL to HDMI adapter is great. It did not come with a power supply but takes the same micro usb as the Note. It produces a beautiful image on an HDMI display (tested on both 720p and 1080p) and did not require any settings to make it work. In all cases it has worked without needing a power supply - presumably because it is drawing sufficient power from the hdmi port with the devices I have tried. If a power supply is connected it passes through to the Note (charging it if the power supply gives sufficient current). Connecting the adapter makes no impact on the speed of the device. Unfortunately none of our lecture theatres have hdmi connections.
The HDMI to VGA converter needs to be active (so needs power). The "Neet" one above had good reviews from people who had struggled to make this work with other devices. For me it worked straight out of the box. On a 1024 x 768 device it uses the full height of the display but not the full width: ileaves a narrow black band on the right. It is showing the full tablet image which is slightly distorted on the projector screen. The projector detected the display without problems.
For the case, I wanted one that works upside down in landscape mode so the return button is at the top left. This prevents accidentally closing the app while writing on the tablet. It also means the display cables run away from you. You need to switch off the auto brightness on the display because your hand will cover the front camera as you write and so the display will periodically dim - not that this makes any difference to the projector display but is just a distraction when writing.
The alternative method I tried to project the display was using a VNC server. I bought the VMLite VNC Server app. (The developer was very helpful and responsive.) By connecting this to a computer/laptop with a VGA connection, you can project the screen. However the VNC server significantly slowed down the tablet and made writing on the tablet less than pleasant. So I abandoned that in favour of the hardware method above.
Hope this helps someone - though your mileage may vary. (Sorry about the lack of links - not enough posts it seems so I had to strip them out).
you might also consider getting something like this, I tested it a few months back and it worked fine. Need external power , but besides that worked out of the box. Got recognized as a HDMI adapter.

Hello, are you sure that it works for this model of tablet? I tested this microUSB-VGA adapter with the Galaxy Note 10.1 ed 2014 and with 2 Sansung smartphones: Galaxy SIII, SIV, and no VGA neither audio signal is produced.
It worked for me with the one l linked. Tested on note 2014 and s3 both needed ext power

Personally I would eliminate the MHL to hdmi adapter and replace that with the netgear PTV 3000. That paired with the OP's hdmi to vga converter would result in a nice wireless solution so you don't have to be physically tied to the projector.

Have you actually tried the PTV3000 with the 2014 Note? Cause I have and it doesn't work properly, specially when streaming video. For a simple powerpoint presentation it's ok, but nothing more

I recently bought a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 to use mostly as a business tool, so that I could run presentations and workshops in various locations. I did quite a lot of research about how to do this and finally selected the correct cable, an 11 pin MHL 2.0 micro USB to HDMI cable with a USB to power adapter. I was very disappointed to find out that I could not get the tablet to display on my Sony Bravia TV, but this setup works fine on other non Sony displays in the house such as the Panasonic one I have in my bedroom. Unfortunately this means I cannot reliably use my new tablet as intended in case I encounter a Sony TV or projector when I'm at a venue or on location. I wish I'd known this before I bought my tablet. A device such as a chromecast dongle isn't much use either since I don't always have a Wi-Fi connection.
I have noted that the OP is using an HDMI to VGA cable - does anybody know if this works on Sony displays or is the Sony/Samsung incompatibility universal?
The PTV3000 miracast device does not require separate WiFi connection after the initial setup. This and the Samsung AllShare Cast dongle worked well for me.

I've heard aswell that the aspect ratio doesn't quite fit the TV so it has black Bars around the picture. Is that true. Thanks in advance. Mark

I got a fake one that works with Note 4. If it works with Note 4, it will work with the Tab S2. It's also true that you'll see black bars, but if you root and change the device resolution it will work perfectly, but you need to root.

MicroUSB to HDMI
I have a Galaxy Tab S2 (SM-T815NZWENEE ) which I am trying to connect it to a TV with an HDMI cable.
I have the ET-H10FAUWESTA (original Samsung) MicroUSB - HDMI adapter and when I plug in a HDMI-VGA adapter, I can display screen through a projector.
As soon as I plug in a HDMI cable instead of the VGA adaptor and connected it to a TV there was no picture.
I looked at Chromecast or other wifi dependent methods is not an option
Any ideas?

@pmenzies ... I connect my Chromecast directly to the TV with HDMI connector. Works perfectly with my S2 T810.

I think the Tab S2 don't have the MHL connection as the Note 4 (look in the Specs at the Connectivity topic) .
My Note 4 works but my new TaB A 10.1 doesn't. With MHL feature you can connect your MicroUSB - HDMI adapter and plug in the TV. To connect the Tab S2 mostly use the Chromecast device or Ezcast device (Miracast).
WiFi Direct could work with some smart TVs.
Edit: Surprise me that http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_tab_s2_9_7-7438.php shows : USB microUSB v2.0 (MHL TV-out)
But Samsung web site doesn't show MHL in specs like it shows for Note 4 smartphone.

Any recommendations on a good USB-C to HDMI Cable? With Desktop Mode finally being an option in Q, I'm hoping to test it out when Q is officially released and we see some apps support it. Preferably with availability in the States.
Amazon basic have better option for this USB-C to HDMI, I'm using that work perfectly

Does it work as HDMI + USB or only HDMI?
Is anyone able to screen mirror Netflix,YouTube TV, Hulu or Amazon prime with the cable? I have a cable and it mirrors everything except those apps when I'm playing video.

I don't want to maybe start a new thread so I thought here - does anyone charge their oneplus 7 pro type c from their laptop/pc to type c on their phone? my ultrabook doesn't quite have enough ports for usbs. so I wanna take away my phone on a usb and use a type c port instead to charge it.
I see some type c cables are 3.1 or something. for charging do I need the expensive cables?

I have an Aukey USB hub which seems to work great. HDMI and USB. It can charge my phone but that seems to be too slow to be useful.

You guys won't be able to mirror those apps unless you've rooted your phone and found a way to patch the application to make it think there is no secondary display connected. The reason you're getting nothing from these apps is they detect the presence of a secondary display, and since the phone cannot comply with HDCP over the adapter cable (not supported), it will not display correctly (black screen where the picture should be or no display at all). I've had a phone in the past with a miniHDMI port and I've used a proper mini-to-full HDMI cable without issue to watch Netflix, but that was a straight HDMI connection with HDCP. Netflix and them take anti-piracy seriously, yo!
