JB 4.2.1/Cm10 and Kindle app - Kindle Fire 2 Q&A, Help and Troubleshooting

I recently flashed JB 4.2.1 onto my kindle fire 2 and obviously the original kindle reader is gone, so I downloaded the kindle reader app from the google play store to discover all the books I had added with calibre were gone. Fine, but when I try to add them from calibre again it says send to device main memory and they don't show up in the kindle reader app.
Does anyone have any other programs to read on or a way to fix this problem so that they show up?

Make sure it's in .mobi. A bunch of .mobi files and not in each folder for each .mobi file. Stick all of those .mobi files into the /sdcard/kindle, all of them, and not each .mobi in each folder. Easy peasy.

Kindle - Sideload eBooks

As some of you might have noticed, the Amazon Kindle App is quite good.
Unfortunately you have to pay for ebooks which are usually available for free on the Internet (e.g.: Programming Windows Phone 7, sold for 22.53$ , available for free on: http://www.charlespetzold.com/phone/).
So I tried to convert it to the used prc format, et voilĂ  it's working.
So here's what you have to do:
Download http://www.mobipocket.com/en/downloadsoft/productdetailscreator.asp or any other Program, capable of converting pdf to prc.
When the conversion is done, apply the registry hack, so that your phone will show up in Windows Explorer. (http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010/11/18/use-your-windows-phone-7-device-as-a-portable-usb-drive/) Remember to close Zune. Otherwise it won't work.
Copy the newly created *.prc file to your phone. If not already done, install TouchXplorer and go to My Documents\Zune\Content\0400\03 and cut the newly created file (It will be renamed to*.z)
Paste it to Applications\Data\48195FB4-EE0E-9264...\Data\IsolatedStore\kindle
Now rename the file so you will remember the it (e.g. programming.prc).
Start up Kindle and the newly added book should be available.
Let me know if it works for you too.
Works perfectly.... thanks!
Works fine, thanks. However, would be nice if you linked the USB hack in your post. Also, (this confused me at first) the storage doesn't show up if you use WPConnect or have Zune running.
It works fine but the book (i tried the Programming WP7 one too) isn't really readable. The text is all over the place and it's also alot larger than the other books (despite my settings being smallest font possible).
Is there a way to make it more "Phone Friendly"?
does it only support prc format?
edit: nevermind, it supports mobi too apparently
worked ... flawlessly
thanks Bro..
Instead of TouchXplorer, you can use Advanced Explorer - it supports doing this automatically. It can both copy files to your phone from the PC (without the PC registry hack) and can sideload .mobi files for you (or you can use the copy-paste functionality just like in TouchXplorer).
Advanced Explorer for mobile or pc? where i get it? is it work with samsung focus?
It's a homebrew phone app. You can find the link right here on this forum. You ned developer unlock of course, as with all these other options.
Samsung suppport is in progress, but I don't know how far along it is.
Why can't you just email the PDF to your @kindle.com account? That's the standard way of getting free books in PDF format to your Kindle, and then it's available to all your Kindle devices as well. I mean I get following this hack if you want to convert non-PDF files, but for MSWord, PDF and MOBI files it's automatic.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_k2land_trans?nodeId=200505520
[EDIT] - Following the instructions from Amazon above, I see they give you a download link to the converted file. You still need to copy the file to your Kindle or Phone, so this hack is still valid. However, if you do mail to your @free.kindle.com email address, you can get it in native (.azw) format.

[Q] Stupid question? Clean up sdcard directories?

This may be a stupid question.. I did a little search and didnt see anything specific to the kindle.
But I've noticed over time from trying out programs, adding new stuff, removing old stuff. That my " sdcard " meaning.. the files you see with the USB cable. is VERY cluttered with random stuff from apps i have long since removed..
Is there a way to clean this out? I also noticed there's 2, ext and int sdcard directories. Is this cleaned up when you do the CWM factory wipes cache wipes etc..
or does it need to be cleaned up manually... I've seen a thread or two for other devices which say to just format it, and the apps will just replace what is needed, is this the case for the kindle fire aswell?
plus i have the stock kindle apps like audible and pulse frozen, is it safe to also remove those directories or will it cause issues?
I'm on the verge of just flashing the cm7 barebones ROM for now until cm9 is stable and running correctly, but i wanted to get this question answered before i did anything else.
Any help will be greatly appreciated! I understand this is likely a dumb question, but I'd rather ask and sound dumb, than brick my kindle on accident
thanks guys!
you can totally delete all the data that your not useing anymore from uninstalled apps and what not.. use a file explorer like es or root explorer and clean it up.. you wont brick anything worst case if you delete something on accident that is still instaled you will have to reinstall the app so make sure its junk
Edit: and for the frozen apps you can delete that too.. only issue is if you unfreeze for some reason the apps will FC

I played around after i knew my kindle wouldn't blow up, and it turns out if i delete a folder still in use, it gets replaced upon reboot anyway.
Now i have a freshly cleaned SD, and i finally flashed ICS! thanks a ton.
Do all games get installed to sd? I had contract killer zombies, six guns, shreck cart, asphalt 6 and a couple others that needed aditonal downloads. I cant find the files for the games anywhere. Is it safe to just delete all the files on the sd and will the games I still have be affected?

Any apps installed on your sdcard can be found in the "sdcard/Android/data" folder
I don't see them there at least not all of them dead space isn't there and neither is uno. I'm looking for the additional data that Cretan games download.contract killer zombies needed like another 250 Mb when I installed it and when I uninstalled it I didn't get that 250 back its still on there somewhere

I don't know what to tell you. I have Dead Space and it's folder is in /Android/data. Are you looking for an apk or a folder?

Before you do anything crazy...What exactly are you trying to accomplish with finding these files? Are you trying to free up space? If that's the case, check your .Trashes folder. There may be files in there that still haven't been deleted. That's happened to me before.
The 250Mb that Dead Space downloads goes in the com.eagames.deadspace folder located in /Android/data. If you uninstalled it, it will be temporarily moved to the .Trashes folder (I think).

Yes I'm trying to free up space. I still have dead space but I don't see a eagames folder or a .trashes folder I'm more specificly looking for contract killer zombies and six guns. I managed to find uno shrek cart and asphalt 6. But there not in android /data
Where is the .trashes folder at

I don't know what else to tell you. I have a com.eagames.deadspace folder and a .trashes folder that I sometimes have to empty and they're both on my sdcard.
I guess the .trashes folder could be a product of using a Mac to mount my sdcard but I don't use Windows so I can't say for sure. Any folder with a "." in front is hidden and cannot be seen by some file browsers like ES File Explorer. For that you need Root Explorer or set your computer to show hidden files. Check it out.
I can't imagine why a certain Dead Space game folder would be installed in a certain location on one device and not the other. Maybe you're missing something.
You can delete whatever you want from your sdcard but make sure to copy it to your computer first in case you need to put something back.

[Solved] Can't save images with no-root screenshot-it?

Saw a similar thread in the thunderbolt forum, but not sure if it's the same issue as this kindle fire problem.
I got the app, downloaded the appropriate 'enabler' for windows, ran it successfully... when I take a screenshot with the app, it makes a shutter sound but after that, I'm not prompted to save or edit the screenshot (the tutorial implies I should be).
There's a setting to change where it gets saved, and I played with that... I know it works because if I specify a folder that doesn't exist, it will create it for me. But there's never a PNG or JPG file anywhere in there.
I actually have rooted the thing so I could try another app. Just wondering if there's something simple I'm overlooking for the current app. A search using ES file explorer found no images in my entire SD card (other than facebook icons).
edit: see my last post here... basically I wasn't truly rooted.
ok. Anyone wanna suggest an alternative?

I don't see any DCIM folder? Looking in the SDcard root directory, and mnt/sdcard, and in the device's top-level directory (the one that has root, sys, acct, data, config, etc). I have a pictures folder, but it's just got facebook thumbnails. I have a folder titled "Root" but the file browser I'm using, Root Explorer, claims it can't show the contents because it thinks I don't have root. Though I've gone through the steps and I'm pretty sure I do.
I feel like the picture is simply not being created at all, maybe due to permissions. If I specify I want to save in a place that doesn't exist... say, mnt/sdcard/foobar... it creates that folder. But I don't have any files within this newly created folder.
So it seems like this isn't an issue of the image exists somewhere, but it's just hiding. It's more like it simply doesn't exist. It doesn't turn up using a search either, though all my jpg and png thumbnails do.
Seems like such a simple function, can we truly not screenshot on this device yet without attaching it to a PC?
I was able to figure it out.
I thought I was rooted, but I wasn't... possibly because of an automatic update to 6.3x that broke my root access. I don't know how no-root screenshot-it is meant to work, but when it failed to write files to every folder I tried to choose... I suspect it was because it lacked root permissions.
I ran the latest kindle fire utility, got permanent root, went into extras and got onto google play, and picked the first free screenshot app I saw. It works great. The name seems to just be "screenshot", probably a ripoff of some other app :/
Thanks to everyone who tried to help. I think the bottom line is most apps will work if you truly get root going, and I found the kindle fire utility very easy to use for that... so thanks also the people responsible for that.

[Q] How to Load an Add-On Zip File in to XBMC on a Fire TV?

This week, my XBMC guru gave me a link to a Zip file that would allow me to reinstall Mashup in XBMC. Unfortunately, it appears that AT&T is blocking the hostingsiteforfree.com server, so I can't access that file. He sent me the Zip file, and I was able to successfully FTP it into my Apple TV, but I have not been able to get it on my Fire TV. Apparently I can't use a USB thumb drive to get the file on there unless I root my Fire TV, which now sounds like it could brick the unit. How can I load this Zip file into XBMC?
BTW, I tried uploading the Zip file to my own server and pointing XBMC at it, but instead of recognizing it as a Zip file that I could use to "Install from Zip File," when I clicked on it XBMC merely drilled down to its contents, showing "plugin.video.movie25" and inside that, the "resources" folder and fanart.jpgs, etc. Is there a way to post the Zip file on my own server that XBMC will be able to "Install from Zip File"?
Thanks.

Thanks for the response, smokie75. adbFire looks like it could come in very handy. But I'm feeling like the apes at the beginning of 2001, staring at the monolith before them.
I pushed the file to my Fire TV using adbFire, supposedly to my sdcard location. But when I looked for the file on my Fire TV, I couldn't find it. I tried to Add Files Source. In the window where I'd normally input a URL, I clicked on "Browse," and then in Root Filesystem I found "sdcard" listed, but when I clicked on it, up came a listing of folders like "Alarm, amazonmp3, Android, DCIM, Download, etc." and I couldn't find my mashup.zip file anywhere. Where did I go wrong?

Isn't mashup no more?
Mashup gone for good
Lol so why are people still installing it?
Sounds like you already have it sorted, but for others searching let me throw out a couple easier methods.
1) ftp - there are multiple apps that let you run a web based ftp server on your device. I haven't done this on my FireTV, but I do use one called Wifi File Transfer, or something like that, on another android device. Assuming you know how to side-load xbmc, side-loading a wifi ftp app is simple.
2) just use a samba (windows/smb) share from another computer on your lan. You can browse the smb shares from within XBMC and "install from zip" from there.

No, it's living a sort of zombie life. Although the developer pulled the plug on it, there is still a way to install it and get much of the functionality it once had. I'm new to XBMC so I never got to see Mashup in all its glory, but there is still plenty of content still working. Some of the areas, like 3D movies, appear to be missing most of their content, but other areas are still chock full of Mashup goodness.
I'm a newbie to this forum, so if it's kosher to post the URL here, let me know and I'll post it.
Is it just a playlists that are still working because they created a new ADDON that is supposed to carry that stuff over.

Someone disabled the update part of mashup. With that file you are able to use mashup without problems. Or get an old version of mashup and block github.com, it won't be able to update but you lose the use of github for other stuff.

If you're referring to Phoenix, I tried it and it's nothing like Mashup., it's nice in it's own right though. In mashup, search, new releases, newly added all work as before.

Ya know, I'm so new to XBMC that someone more knowledgable will have to answer that. Like I said, there are areas that appear to be pretty empty, but areas where a lot of content still works, some of which appears to be recent content. (I found last week's episode of Modern Family, for example.) While it appears to be a shadow of its former self, the excellent way that the content is organized and categorized still makes it my first stop when launching XBMC.

From your Q, I am assuming you are asking about backing up your Kodi data. If you are:
The folder that needs to be backed up is residing at /sdcard/Android/data/org.xbmc.kodi/files. In that you will see a folder called ".kodi" that has all your settings and addons. This folder needs to be backed up.
If you have attached a USB to your FTV and your firmware on the FTV is allowing you see that attached USB (located at /sdcard/extUsb), you can use multiple ways to copy the folder. You can use an app like ES File Explorer or one of the apps like Fire TV utility or ADBFire (I could be wrong on the names, I don't use them. I believe they have a forum thread where you can post Qs). You can also use native shell commands and not use any external app to copy to USB, but I would not recommend it if you are not familiar with scripting. Using apps would be much simpler.
If you are on a firmware on your FTV that does not have native USB support, you will probably need to use an app like "USB OTG Helper" or "StickMount" or other apps to mount your USB first before you can start using its storage. Maybe the ADBFire or Fire TV Utility has mounting features, you will need to look into those apps for that.
EDIT: You can also backup your folder to your computer if you have ADB installed on your computer and can connect to your FTV through ADB. Depending on your choice, someone can give you more detailed steps.
The only thing I see there is advanced settings in the .kodi folder.
You need to show hidden files. Get yourself a copy of es file explorer. Copy add ons and user data to where you want to keep them.
