Issues with hard reset and Odin - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

OK guys so this is the issue, I'm trying to reset my buddies Samsung Galaxy S 2 on T-Mobile. He forgot his password and he asked me to help since I'm handy with cell phones. So I tried the easiest thing and tried to do a hard reset. Now I press and hold Volume Up and Down and Press and hold the Power button until I feel it vibrate and let go of the Power button while still holding Volume Up and Down and it will take me to where it says "# Manual Mode #" but when I scroll down and try to select "Wipe Data/Factory Reset" I can't select it. I tried pressing the Home button and the Power button to select it and nothing. I tried all the buttons and nothing. I also tried putting in Download Mode to try to reflash the firmware but when I connect it to the computer I don't here it connect and Odin doesn't recognize it not even in the Device Manager. I tried doing the same on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and the computer and Odin recognize it just fine. So i'm stumped and need you guys help! Thanks in Advance....

Have you installed the proper USB driver and Kies for the phone on your computer? Make sure you are using the latest Odin.
Also, try flashing a different recovery system such as TWRP once you're able to get Odin working.
As long as you are able to get your phone to connect to Odin, you should be fine. You can even flash a stock ROM through Odin if all else fails.
Good luck!

If you can't get Odin to work, test it on another Galaxy S2 to see if the problem is with the computer. Just a tip.

I have been having the same problem. this t989 i have been working with does not show up on any laptop in the house, and they all have the kies drivers installed. it is "usb device not found." i have been considering wiping the usb storage and sending it straight back to factory settings. but without odin i am going to have to manually flash recovery and all that.. any ideas?? I hooked my phone up to both laptops in the house and it shows up instantly. i am definitely confused. and the worst of it, is ubuntu didnt even recognize the phone.

Do yo have any belkin router software install on your computer. If you have, uninstall it and try.

No luck, installed Kies and didn't recognize phone in Odin. What's weird is that it will not let me factory reset thru the 3 button combo in # manual mode #! I would try a different pc but don't have one atm.

i think i am going to try pointing the phone to googles oem driver
Windows 7
To install the Android USB driver on Windows 7 for the first time:
Connect your Android-powered device to your computer's USB port.
Right-click on Computer from your desktop or Windows Explorer, and select Manage.
Select Devices in the left pane.
Locate and expand Other device in the right pane.
Right-click the device name (such as Nexus S) and select Update Driver Software. This will launch the Hardware Update Wizard.
Select Browse my computer for driver software and click Next.
Click Browse and locate the USB driver folder. (The Google USB Driver is located in <sdk>\extras\google\usb_driver\.)

here is something interesting the phone i am working on the usb storage is not mounted on the phone. has anyone seen anything like this before?

My PC doesn't even recognize the phone while its in odin mode??? It's like it's not even connected!!!

t989 bricked but can detect in Linux

Dear friends,
I have a bricked t989. Screen wont start. I thin the phone ran out of space when I was trying to flash a ROM (silly me).
Here is what happens when I connect the phone to:
Windows7/XP laptop:
It start asking me to format the USB drive. Phone is not detected in Samsung Kies. It shows as a USB device ni system tray. IN computer management, a lots of drives appear and all seem to be healthy. The icons disappear when I hold the power button and come back when I press power button again. So it tells me the on and off is occuring, but nothing occurs on screen.
Linux PC:
I can see all the drives with all the contents. Including all my files, apps, system folders, etc. I see folders like image lib etc. And its writable too.
IS there any way I can flash a stock rom or something by copying some files to these folders or anyway I can use what I can see in Linux to put life back into my phone?
Many thanks for reading.

If u can see everything like that then ur not bricked, u need to put he phone in download mode by turning it off and holding vol-vol+ and connecting to PC, a screen should show and give u option to continue or cancel, press continue, now connect to windows via Odin, Samsung kies will not see the phone because u have a custom recovery, make sure kies isn't running/uninstall it if u can, open Odin v1.85 and wait till it says added, from there flash twrp v2.6.1.0 tar.file from here techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/hercules load the file via PDA option and press start in Odin, do not touch anything else besides PDA to load the file and start to initiate the flash, when its done and u get a green passed sign, DL ur fav ROM to ur PC, boot to recovery on the phone and select advanced/mount USB, transfer the file, flash the ROM (and gapps if needed) and reboot, phone should recover fine..

I have this same problem, but can't get mine to work.
While back, I flash and play around with lots of roms. One day my t989 went dead, after flashing, can't remember the detail. Anyway, so now, when I plug in the usb cable, the computer dings and a message pops up saying I need to format the disk drive before I can use it. Options are "Format disk" or "Cancel". I can't format, it keeps saying to check the disk and make sure it is connected properly and try again. Only option is Cancel. Odin can't see it either. Kies can't see it. Also, Kies is uninstalled and PC is rebooted. Still no luck.
What else can I try?

First of all u never never format a phone from a PC like that, the device has certain partitions that hold crucial info such as imei, sys data, recovery info, and formating wipes all of that so that's a no no, second if by chance u flashed the wrong ROM or a wrong anything bad things happen, the fact that it even asks u to format the disk tells me something is wrong, try holding vol-vol+ while connecting phone to PC when the phone is off, if its recoverable it will enter download mode, if that doesn't work u can try a USB jig, which will force the device into DL mode and at most there a couple dollars on eBay or amazon, so its worth it to fix the phone, if neither of those options work then congrats man u have officially hard bricked ur device, frame it an mount it on the wall lol

Follow this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1467128
And download the firmware for your country from sammobile
Try to install adb driver (but first remove samsung usb driver if are installed)follow this guide:http://technologyandroid.com/2013/0...river-adb-di-qualsiasi-dispositivo-android-2/(it's in italian language)
then install samsung usb driver and check if odin recognize the device.
I have tried this guide yesterday for galaxy s2 and it works.
If after that don't works try to change the usb port , open odin by run as administrator and don't reboot odin.

install the latest USB drivers from here:http://uploaded.net/file/xdloq4jw (after installing the adb driver!!)
Windows 8 has major problems with compatibility with Odin ......that is probably the issue here.......
Try a PC with an older OS (preferably XP but vista or 7 should work)
If you're using vista or 7, run Odin as administrator.
If XP, run normally.
Then......
Make sure....
1) kies is NOT running (kill in task manager)
2) any installed firewalls/anti virus are disabled
3) have a selection of USB cables on hand to try if one doesn't work.
4) the USB port you are using needs to be a primary port (connected directly to the PC motherboard)......but try them all anyway....
Good luck....

[Q] WTF is "download mode'?

OK I have a Galaxy Tab3 GT-P5210, I have developer usb debugging enabled, I have the Samsung KIES package installed on my PC and I've downloaded Odin307, the TWRP package and the ROOT package that is well documented in this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2525630
The problem I'm having is with the step that says:
Power down your device and put it into download mode. To do this, press and hold the Home + Volume Down + Power buttons simultaneously for 3 to 5 seconds until you see the warning screen.
When I do this it goes into something called 'Android System Recovery <3e>" with a prompt that says "# MANUAL MODE #" with the following options:
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
and it does not show up in Odin so I cannot get further...how can I resolve this?
as a rant here, I really wish Google would mandate that all providers supply an option to root the device and install stock Android...this nonstop jumping thru hoops just to have basic control over a device you spent good money on is ****ing stupid

Hey man download mode is where you flash custom recoveries and custom or stock Roms on your device. The answer to you for download mode is your not holding it down enough. first power off the device. Second hold these buttons all together: power + Volume Down + home button. Keep holding these buttons for a minimum of 10-15 seconds or more and it will go into download mode. From there you open up Odin on your pc and then you should see in a box your com port this means your connected. From there you it PDA and you select your recovery file. It should end with
.md5! Make sure re-partition is not checked or you will brick your device! Now it start and once it's done it will say Res OK. Good luck!

connecting to odin is the same for every samsung device. I am going to try my best to help you out so here we go. Check to make sure you have the samsung usb drivers. to do that go to my computer then local disk then go to programs and files. if you see the SAMSUNG folder and when you open it and you see the drivers folder containg the usb drivers then if you don't see it then we need to install the drivers. first uninstall kies. you don't need this.the download and open this exe file: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_nizg6yUZ0NS1RodDBxd0E1MFU/preview . install it normally.

After trying some different things I got Odin working, was able to install TWRP and root the device so that's all good
Now I've downloaded the framework-res.apk and decompiled it, modded it as i wanted to and recompiled using the Android Multitool app and the final issue I'm having is pushing the new framework-res.apk back to the device. The Android Multitool app claims it pushes the file but it does not. So I downloaded the latest sdk and I'm going to try using the raw ADB tool to push the file and see if that works...wish me luck
You can use twrp file manger to do that.
Just copy your file to sdcard while connected to pc and then reboot to recovery use file manager in advanced settings. Find your file and copy it to where ever you need it.

[Q] Booting problem

hi. I encountered a problem on my phone that doesn't boot properly.
When i tried to switch on my phone it showed at first the welcome msg "Samsung S4 mini gt-i9192" then after that, a pitch black screen, could not properly boot. But i learn that it does not turns off after the screen turns all black, i have to press the power button first to turn off the phone.
This problem started when i installed an app with some compatibility problems.
I wanted to root my phone hoping that can solve the problem, but then again a problem occurred when i tried to connect my phone to my laptop. It fails to install MTP usb device to my computer. I tried connecting it again provided that samsung kies was installed but again failed to connect my phone. Therefore i cant root my phone because i cant copy the files needed to root to my phone sd card.
I tried reinstalling kies, installing mtp drivers but nothing happened. I tried also restoring the previous boot image, restoring factory settings using recovery mode. But then problem still exist.
And fyi my phone can't mount any external sd card using recovery mode. And i think it was not in a debugging mode.
Phone: samsung s4 mini gt-i9192
firmware: i dont know
So basically, the problem is:
my phone wont boot,
i cant connect it to my pc
and i cant root it.
How should i root or even flash my phone when i cant connect to my computer? Do you have any idea on how to solve this problem? Any solutions or suggestions would be much appreciated. tnx.

Have you tried putting the phone in download mode (Volume Down + Home + Power) and then connecting it your p,c , if not give this a shot it should pick up the drivers , once done , take out the usb cable hold the power the button to shut down and boot up .
since you have not mentioned your OS am assuming it is windows , try taking out Kies via some software like revo uninstaller which will remove all directories plus all registry entires then reinstall it if you really need it.

[Q] Tab 3 8.0 not charging, no boot, no download mode. Any help?

Hello friends. I´m new in the forums, but I have now a huge problem in my hands.
I have a Samsung SM-T311 and it stopped working days ago. It wouldn't boot or charge. Recently, a message appeared in the screen, "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again".
I can start in Download Mode screen sometimes, with the USB cable in my PC. But as soon as I press "vol up" to enter the Download Mode, it restarts into the "Firmware upgrade encountered..." screen.
So, I have now an incredibly unstable tablet, that won´t boot or charge unless connected in my PC. And even connected, the only thing it shows is that message in the screen. Download Mode is not reachable, so I cant restore it in Kies or Odin, since it cannot be detected.
I know, it´s a mess. But before I send it to any repair services, there´s anything I can do to try and restore my device?
Thanks in advance.

Download your stock firmware from sammobile.com. Flash it using Odin.
The "firmware encountered an error" screen should work the same as the download mode screen. Just connect to pc when you get to that screen and make sure that it is detected in Odin.

It´s not detected by Odin. But thanks for the quick answer anyway.
EDIT: Well, after some effort, could start in download mode. But my computer can´t recognize the device anyway, either in Odin or Kies. It was working perfectly before, don´t think it´s hardware related.
Try reloading the Samsung drivers onto your PC. This may, or may not help. However, not reloading the drivers will keep you in the same state you are in now. Connecting the device and having Odin not recognize it is there tells me the drivers are invalid or corrupted or no longer there. It could also mean your device bootrom is badly damaged.
You may also want to try different USB ports on the PC. When you plug in the device to the computer, you can go to Computer Management / Device Manager and see which port the Samsung is trying to access.
Can you access recovery mode?
Also, try different USB cables.. They are NOT all created equal.
Some will charge.... but not connect to PC for file transfer..
It's real.. try different cables once you've reached D/L mode..
good luck
PS easy way to goto D/L mode is hold 'power' and 'Vol down' together, ONLY
Dont even mess with trying to hold the 'Home" button too..
