Hey all, I've been a member here on XDA for almost 3yrs now and I've frequented multiple sections depending on the device(s) I was/am using at the time.
I have to say, the Galaxy Nexus community is by far my favorite hands down.
So I ask, Who can I expect to see in the next nexus section when google releases the 2013 iteration of the Nexus Flagship Device?
I really am hoping a lot of you that I have grown to love chatting with all are there with me. I passed on the Nexus 4 because frankly, I don't see enough innovation over my Gnex to deem it worth purchasing, thus why I am waiting for the follow-up device we most likely can all expect come around November of this year.
I just cannot see myself getting anything but a Google flagship vanilla phone after owning this fantastic device, nothing compares to the development, themes, kernels etc available. Not to mention we get the newest versions of everything first as well.
Anyway, Who's gonna be in the new forum right there with me when the "Nexus 5 aka 2013 Nexus" arrives?
*on a sidenote, I can only imagine what the AOSPA Team and AK Team is going to bring to the table.

Not a fan of LG but Samsung makes a quality phone in a lightweight container. I have never liked Motorola, always found their devices to be crap (just my opinion though). Sony or HTC for the next Nexus device and I'll be a happy camper. Although, I will get one if Samsung makes it again too.
Who am I kidding, if it's a nexus device google oversees the whole process so I will buy it regardless of the brand.

chances are, I will be there. but it all depends. the nexus 4 is a great device, but i am assuming the 2013 nexus is going to be 5"1080P, quad core, 13mp camera, huge battery, 2+GB ram ect. its going to be hard to stay away from it....no matter who makes it.

Im planning on it too. I skipped the Nexus 4 for the same reasons. I hope its worth the waiting.
Prob not me. My next phone will have one of those monster batteries like the Note or Maxx does. That + unloackable bootloader + active dev comminuty will be priorities on my next phone purchase. But I'm not in much of a hurry right now.
I'm more interested in what chip is going to be in it. The S4 is already dated so I'm curious what Google is going to use for a fHD display device.
I honestly dont know what to expect. They could throw out anything like a thin phone with a 2.1 GHz processor and 6 GB ram. Who knows. I expect it to be innovative though.

Its 50/50 at this time. I want a monster battery and a fast processor. The Note3 is calling me. Unless that device is too big, then I guess nexus 5 it is or galaxy s4.

I will most likely be getting the next one also. I was still 50/50 on getting the Nexus 4 but since I wasn't able to purchase one at launch time, I made a deal with myself that if I wasn't able to get one by the end of January then I might as well wait for the next one...which I will be doing (unless something better comes out ( the xperia Z is calling my name though)).
So we shall see how it goes.

Nexus 5 will be my next phone, I gave up on nexus 4 because basically its completly based off the lg optimus g so nothing inspiring done on lg's part there an the fact it was impossible to get as it sold out then rumours they are ramping down production on them so soon after launching it, I just hope the nexus 5 won't be a repeat of the nexus 4 launching an sell out so quickly because of limited stock.

I don't post much, but this is what I have been thinking about lately.
I have had this Gnex for just over a year now and love the device. I have been trying different ROMs fairly often, and like that the software release is for the nexus first before other handsets.
So I will be getting the next nexus device regardless of who it is made by. With so many people upset by the quality of the current nexus 4, I really can't see Google leaving it the same quality for the next handset.
Also at the moment I don't feel the nexus 4 is enough of a step up from my nexus to warrant a change, but I think the next device will be. Just hope it is more than 16gb of storage.

Is the nexus going to be the next big thing? And thus in regards to roms and themes etc. is it going to have lots of devs on board? I'm in the market right now for a phone but the only thing stopping me from getting a nexus is the lack of mods. So that's either because it is so new or people don't actually like it. So is it worth getting this phone and waiting for 3rd party stuff to come out? As I really don't care about the average ICS features they talk about.
It's too new. It's the next damn Nexus phone, it's the ICS reference phone, it already has plenty of developers. But it's a low newer than the SII.
As stated before, its too new. Sure, the SGSII sold about 1 million units in less than a month but you gotta take into consideration that Samsung brung in new technology and the Galaxy Nexus is pretty much an upgraded SGSII with AOSP. SuperAMOLED HD & an LED notification are the 2 main features that made me want this phone, plus the design is alot sleaker than first anticipated. Also, Google phones are developer phones. So people tend to not go for dev phones even though its alot easier to use than Bloatwiz.

sales wise the galaxy nexus will NOT surpass the GS2
as far as development, community and modding goes, that it will surpass simply because the nexus is the go to device for the fast majority of major developers around here.
in any case except software there is not much to write about in Galaxy Nexus, its more or less the same hardware specs as SGS2 which is almost an year old now.
Now that ICS is showcased, there should be much better hardware coming up (in a matter of months) which would be FAR BETTER!

Uh.. have you taken a look at CES 2012? many companies announced upcoming phones. All of them with the exception of the Huawei one are being launched with Gingerbread upgradable to Ice Cream Sandwich. This will take months to do. Not to mention, manufacturer skins will ruin the stock ICS experience.
Sure tablets are coming out with quad-cores. But all in honesty, this is a phone, not a computer. Quad core is nice, yes. But it's still a phone.
Galaxy Nexus won't be big as the S2 in terms of sales. It never will be. Nexus devices are focused towards Android enthusiastics that want the stock experience. It is not a device that is mainstream (not the device everyone will notice). Which is what makes the device so cool and unique with it's sleek design.
Galaxy Nexus will have major support from developers. We've already have numerous developers who are putting work and effort into ROMs and kernels including Ezekeel (his works from the Nexus S and kernel expertise), Franco (kernel), morfic (in progress with donations), supercurio (Voodoo) and so on. Several CM devs also have the phone.
Why do you think Clockwork Recovery Touch Enabled was built first for the GN? Get the phone if modding / ROMs is your thing. The phone's just going to get bigger as it slowly gets expanded onto U.S. carriers (whenever..)

Galaxy nexus is an year old spec almost, and regarding OS - almost everyone is rooting their nexus devices - so u root a much better hardware spec device and port a fully functional ICS rom on them and you're there!

Actually he made very good points. Coming from an iPhone the galaxy nexus was the only option. I won't deal with lack of upgrades and bloatware anymore

Next generation phones? The lineup of these phones at ces were not that impressive, and I doubt I'll be impressed at mwc. Also 99% of these phones will be on gingerbread
Nexus devices will always be the best choice for me because I enjoy the pure android experience without bloatware and easy unlock.

I bought a Galaxy Nexus because it is a nexus device. I do not care for Galaxy S3 because it uses a manufacturer skin causing delays when it comes to updates. Not to mention, S3 is announced and will probably not arrive to the states until Summer or Fall 2012.
Galaxy nexus hardware is definitely not outdated. Quad cores, what's the use of them if android os isn't optimized to be used with those four cores?

I only recently bought a Galaxy nexus and i'm definitely gonna wait because the only major differences are the camera, CPU and battery

If the N4 was the same price as the GNex was at launch, sure that'd be an easy decision, but it being so cheap makes it hard to resist.
Personally, I think I'm going to wait and see how 4.2 runs on the GNex and then make up my mind.

Having recently acquire a Galaxy Tab 2, in addition to my SGN which is only 9 months old, I think the remainder of this year's electronics budget is going towards the new ARM Chromebook. Quad core is nice and all but having just started writing Android apps, there's the danger of only testing on really fast hardware and discovering your app is a dud only when it's too late
I foresee my SGN lasting at least one battery replacement -- when updates stop coming out, I'll get whatever the current Nexus is and put CyanogenMod on the SGN. Plus resale values have probably tanked ever since the N4 annoucement came out.

While the nexus 4 is a great improvement over the Galaxy Nexus. The non removable battery kinda killed it for me. I have a spare battery for my phone that i use allot and i can't go with a phone without a removable battery.
As long as my Galaxy Nexus does everything i need it to do I won't abandon it.

I will wait. The quad core and camera are not doing it for me. We should be getting the 4.2 update shortly -which is the key point for me. I believe the next Nexus will be running Android 5, that's really something to look forward to.

I'm going to wait and see, but currently I'm leaning towards "keep the GNex & upgrade next year". I don't need the extra horsepower, the screen is a minimal upgrade and the looks aren't really spectacular enough to make me want to switch for fashion.
The camera improvements are nice, but don't seem enough to make me want to bite.
And we get all the 4.2 goodness anyway.

I'm keeping it for another year but I love the gorilla glass and overall more thoughtful case design. With the current phone, it's a risk giving it to my 5 year old to watch a netflix video.

Same here. I had the horrible LG Revolution, and they've lost my business forever.
Plus how on earth did Google make the decision to drop LTE. That is going got bite them in the butt. once you have real 4G LTE speeds, not that HPSA BS you'll never want to go back.
I see the Nexus 4 like an inferior Galaxy Nexus. The ONLY things it has going for it is an extra Gig of RAM, a "supposedly" better camera, and a better processor.
To me a nice dual core phone with a nice screen, excellent ROM support and freaking LTE makes much more sense.

I'm going to wait and see. I just don't think the quad processor is going to make a whole lot of difference in real world to me. I'm not a gamer so I don't need to shell out another $400 for the 16g device with tax right now. Most apps are not even going to be optimized for the quad processor right now anyway. Our genx will run 4.2 nice and smooth and easily get me thru till the next one is released next year. If I tried to keep up with every phone that comes out that's better, I'd go broke!

I have both AT&T and Verizon and I've waited patiently for some new game changers to come out. I sell mobile phones for a living so i get first dibs and want to of course have the best device for both carriers. Which new phones would be best I'm your opinions?
I would say, being a fan of the nexus brand, wait for a new nexus. Unless you like touch wiz. Then you should wait for the Galaxy S4. From some rumored specs I've read so far I believe its going to be a great device, but nexus phones are still my favorite being pure android and having a lot of support from Google with the updates.

Why would you say to wait for the X? How much better would it technically be than its rivals?.. I love my Nexus but pretty much any phone I get will be modded so its Hardware I'm curious about.. We get the HTC One in store on Tuesday so I'm most likely going to get that for my ATT line. Im sure it'll hold its resale value for a few months so I can sell it if something better comes out in the near future. I'm not sure which Verizon phone is coming out but I want both to be the best ones out
I am waiting for the next nexus device personally. I don't want to deal with locked bootloaders and other hacking to get my phone to do what I want it to. Nexus can't be beat until carriers and manufacturers get on board with rooting and custom roms... Which is never going to happen.
I'm thinking Galaxy S4 for my next device. Not a big HTC phone guy.

I think if you ask this question in this section most people will tell you to wait on a new nexus or grab the nexus 4. I'm not in any rush. My gnex does everything I need it to. The nexus 4 I'd made by lg and has no removable battery made of glass and got hot as hell. OK not saying it's not a good phone.. Just was not for me. My galaxy nexus is still pretty and smooth as butter.

If my gnex broke now I'd get a Note 2. But I'm interested in seeing how the S4 pans out. If the next Nexus had an sdcard I wouldn't consider anything else, but no chance of that.

I gave my upgrade to my mom so she could get rid of LG Optimus S and get a Galaxy S3. I bought my girlfriend the GNex from a warehouse in LA off Ebay and picked it up myself ($180). A week later I received another GNex in the mail from the warehouse. At No cost. I had the E4GT and loved it until 6 months later the micro USB port died. Instead of fixing it, I used the GNex that just sat there. I now have my mom's upgrade available in July. So why not wait to see if the RUMORed X Phone will see the light of day, and then make my choice. If these specs pan out, the battery is removable, and there is a removable sim card (might not matter) - X phone all the way! Of course it all depends on the Galaxy S4, and Sprint getting the X Phone. (God, I never pray, but please, I will do what ever you say- But only if you give me an X Phone from Sprint) I am kidding. Calm down Jesus Freaks.

Of course the Rumor news has now been called Not concrete at all. I guess the Nvidia chip doesn't support CDMA, and the masses believe Motorola will not - not make a phone for Verizon, being their biggest partner. Funny thing is- Google didn't care about CDMA for Nexus 4. But the masses didn't mention that. Either way the X Phone is still not confirmed as real. PS I might be willing to switch to Tmo if that phone was real and didn't support CDMA- as long as Tmo has working LTE in my area.
I highly doubt the s4 will even have a SD card slot. Google is trying to push cloud storage which dies make sense. Prepare for SD cards to become a thing of the past soon

They need to just increase the size of internal storage for people with limited data plans, cloud storage is just a money spinner for google an carriers, apple did it long before google with iCloud an its a failure, common sense learn from histories mistakes.

I think you should wait just to check out the S4, the new nexus witch KLP and the google X phone configs. But if have to buy a new phone now, I would buy a S3.

Motorola has the best radios and best hardware out of any company period. At least in the Droid X days. So take that with Google software and bam. Orgasm

I am quite disappointed with how things turn out at Google I/O event regarding Google announcement of Galaxy S4 device.
First there is nothing wrong with Galaxy S4 but in my country there are no I9505 (Snapdragon variant) available. I 'assume' this to be the device that Google intend to support since it is available in the US. This kinda turn me off purchasing S4. Not sure how many people really care about this but for me it is a deal breaker and I am for one will not purchase S4 octacore device.
I was hoping to upgrade my Galaxy Nexus, not that it urgently needed upgrading, since it is still fast and very usable especially with my current Rom/Kernel setup (Purity 5.4.1 + AK latest nightly) but I was hoping for something with longer battery life. HTC One / Xperia z/ S4 all clocked it at around 3-4+ hours of heavy usage, that is only slightly better than my current GN.
How do you guys feel. Has Google made the right decision to partner with Samsung and not releasing a new device this year?

Nexus 5 is impossible, look at past trends.
And the s4 ge is not a nexus device, it's just AOSP supported..
Correct me if I'm wrong..
What is expected is a updated nexus 7, which did not come out as of today, there is still 2 days of I/o, who knows what will happen..

I don't think this year's Nexus is functionally the S4. I'm guessing that a real Nexus will come out this year. It's just that the S4 will also run AOSP, unlike what the S line has done in the past. Nexus phones usually come out later in the year. I was kind of expecting a 2nd generation Nexus 7, but oh well.
IO had updates to a lot of existing apps. Hangouts was a little lackluster, but the Books and Music apps got big updates, and it looks like the Maps app will get one soon. And there's the new IDE and the Games framework might be quite nice. So I'm actually not all that disappointed.

I was hoping for something with longer battery life. HTC One / Xperia z/ S4 all clocked it at around 3-4+ hours of heavy usage, that is only slightly better than my current GN.

Me and you both. I'm leaning towards the Note3 unless a better option is available by September.
Just like the g1, ogdroid, hero, g2, g2x, and maybe 1 or 2 other Verizon droid phones....pure Google s4....nothing new to see here.. #stillnotanexus

this device will probably run 2years or more
If they had a new device to announce they need a new version of android. And if there was a new one they would do it at the highlight keynote. Not during the workshops.

There's actually something bigger than a new Android version or device in this I/O.
They improve the rest except those I mentioned above.
I actually hoping for the next Android version.
And I'm still hoping they'll surprise us in the middle of another event. Hahaha. This is a silly hope, but who knows?

And those devices (Nexus 1) had practically very very small amount of usable space for apps anyway. I don't see this as a valid argument.

Ntm who's going to run out and buy a legacy device lol
I've been waiting for I/O to see what I want to do about my upgrade. I've been eligible for one since last August. Currently on Verizon so I was also hoping for a cdma nexus 5 or something. Not really into the S4. I mean it's nice, but the price tag is a little high for me personally. I get paid the day after tomorrow and I'm seriously considering picking up a Google nexus 4 on a straight talk plan. Then again if they do announce something new (maybe even later this year?) Like a new CDMA nexus I will be pretty upset I cancelled and lost my grandfathered unlimited data.
I love my gnex, but playing newer games or heavy multitasking, you kinda realize how old it is.... What do you guys think?
Why would anyone in their right mind expect a nexus 5 at I/o every nexus phone to date has been released in October, and it is still only 6 months since the nexus 4 was released.
I was, however, a little disappointed not to see a nexus 7 upgrade and android 4.3, but given all the leaks, it seams 4.3 simply got delayed and we'll probably see it at some point this summer.

Hang in there. There's still hope Motorola will come through with something unlocked, stock, and hot for all carriers. And no, I'm not talking about the XFON, that was revealed to have mid-grade specs. Perhaps it's big brother though, which is rumored to be launching for all carriers with similar specs to that of the newer super phones.
I'm in the same boat as you, have been sitting on my upgrade since December hoping for some news or acknowledgement of things for come for our CDMA network...

Saw some speculation on Android Central that Google may be moving in the direction of annual update cycles now that Android has achieved a degree of maturity and polish. I am a little dubious. Part of what has made Android great up to this point has been the fact that we don't have to wait a year for updates. Two or three updates annually keeps things fresh. I would speculate that it also helps to keep the development community involved since there is always a new challenge to be tackled, but not necessarily at the expense of all of the hard work that went into the previous iteration. Just my 2ยข.

There is no arguments over here, just correcting misinformation. Unless you are trying to tell me Nexus One is not a nexus device, then fine.

It was a pretty blah I/O from our consumer standpoint. It looks decent from a Developer one.
I wanted to see a N5 and updated tablets also. The S4 at $650 does not interest me at all. My GN can still do everything I want it to well.

The s4 costs $848 here so consider yourself lucky you get it for $650, i don't think s4 will outsell iPhone 5 at that price, well at least not off contract, s4 looks just like my friends s3 an its already been said that its a measly upgrade from the s3 an not worth upgrading to s4 if you already own a s3, kind of like gnex to lg n4 , if your looking for something completely new i suggest waiting out for the next nexus an hoping it delivers

The S3 to S4 is a fairly large upgrade compared to the GNEX to N4. The S4 improved on virtually every aspect of the device and even shrunk the dimensions while increasing the screen size. They improved the screen, battery, camera, processor, GPU, ergonomics and added features. How is that a measly upgrade...?
I find it hard to understand that people want a complete overhaul of the devices looks in order for it be considered an "upgrade".
If they were to radically change up the overall look of the S5 people would make a million threads *****ing about the changes...

Hey guys I've been considering upgrading my phone to something better.
I'm currently using the GNex (obviously since I'm in this forum).
Are there any phones you can recommend right now that would be a good upgrade from the GNex? Or should I just wait until the Fall when Google releases their next Nexus phone? Presuming they are actually doing this...
People rave about the SGS4 but when I read about it seems very, very gimmicky.
Does anyone know for sure if Google is releasing a new phone in the Fall, or when specifically? I'm hoping it will follow the same price strategy as the Nexus 4 did, without so much hardware distribution problems....$300 top of the line unlocked Android phone...I'll be all over it this time because to me the difference between a GNex and a Nexus 4 was not huge...but this would be a 2 year difference now.
Just wait. You have the Note 3, Motorola X, possible updated HTC One, and other powerful devices coming. The Galaxy S4 and current HTC One is about to be obsolete in terms of hardware which is crazy.

looking at the motoX currently as well. For what it's worth, my dad just picked up the S4 and it is a great phone, but if you can afford to wait, you lose absolutely nothing. Don't like the Moto X, you can get the S4.
Well I just upgraded to the HTC one. It really is an awesome device, and sense 5 is an excellent skin. No lags or over the top intrusions like previous versions of sense.
The build quality is incredible. The most beautiful feeling when u pick it up in your hands. Premium. And it's a looker too. I won't even go into the twin front facing stereo speakers. They are something too.
Its the first smartphone I've had with a non removable battery as well. Battery is good for the average day comfortably.
I would say go for it. It's got excellent specs to match as well. 2 gigs of ram and quad snapdragon 600. Can't go wrong.

Yep. I did the same over the weekend. Couldn't be happier. All my friends either had the galaxy S3/S4 or an iphone, so I wanted to be different. I gotta say this phone is beautiful and very professional looking.
Build quality is great. Rooted and flashed a custom rom not even an hour after I got home. Not real big on Sense, but I can manage with it.
I still have my Gnex, in case I start to feel nostalgic and want to go back to that
The Nexus 4 is still a great device, and should be relevant for some time to come. Also, since you have a Galaxy Nexus, you probably aren't against rooting. Get an S4, or an HTC One, root it, and make it a Google Edition device. Or just flash an AOSP based rom on it.
There's always something coming out in the next few months. Figure out what features are important to you, and find a phone that matches those features.
if anything right now then I'd go with HTC One, or wait to see what the next nexus will be.
