[Q] How to manually flash a new recovery? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

I've been searching the Tmo Note 2 forums for an hour and can't find instructions to manually flash a new recovery image. Running stock ROM, already rooted it, I just need instructions for putting in a new recovery. Alternatively, if someone can tell me how to get the phone into fastboot mode, I know how to flash it from there.
(This isn't my phone, I'm just rooting it and putting in a recovery image.)

Odin mode should allow you to flash cwm or twrp manually (phone off then hold volume up plus home hey plus power) not sure if its volume up or down but you know its the right one if when booted it asks you to hit volume up to continue...
Simple way would be to just install Goo Manager from play store (its free but please donate to devs) and then when app is opened, simply press menu and then install open source

If you can find a custom recovery image, you can do this in a terminal window:
Code:
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/name-of-recovery.img
But why don't you just install goo manager or ROM manager from Play store? They let you install custom recoveries (TWRP or CWM) in no time.
Or use the all-in-one kit in the dev forum?
P.S. There isn't fastboot mode in Samsung phones like you see in HTC devices. The closest thing in Samsung is to use ODIN and the download mode. I don't think you want to bother with it for someone else's phone, though.

Thanks fellas, it wasn't at all clear how to do it through Goo Manager. (Seriously, "Install OpenRecoveryScript"? Why not "Install Recovery Image"?)
I hope they like TWRP, cuz that's what's on it now. (I'm a CWM fan myself, but w/e.)

Twrp is actually updated more often and its open source, although it is hard to turn CWM when its been so reliable in the past

As long as you have root access:
1. You need ADB and fastboot installed on your PC, make sure USB debugging on phone is enabled and connect phone via usb.
2. Put the recovery in the same directory as the above two utilities.
3. Shift+Right click in the folder containing the 3 items in step 1+2 and select "open command window".
4. cmd window should open enter "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"

Hi,
Make sure you have the right recovery on your phone.
Please note, this forum is for T-mobile Note phones and you have better chances of getting a response in qmobile nor air2 forums.

Any ideas where i can get one?

You might ask in the thread I've linked. They will know FAR more about your device than we will as the vast majority of us have never heard of a qmobile noir a50 before. I just Googled it a moment ago.

[Q] Recovery doesn't work

I recently flashed my phone by odin because its touchscreen didn't work. it got back to work after flashing. But when I want to go in recovery mode the android and box logos appear but nothing written on the screen and after a while it restart itself. So I can't root my phone!
What's the problem?
I think something with your recovery image is wrong with have you tried flashing it again?
Sent from my GT-I8150 using xda app-developers app
I used a stock firmware package.
I didn't tried again because its a risky procedure.
if you in stock recovery, once the green android logo appear, just press the phone menu button, then your screen will dim...
wait for a while, it will lead you to the recovery menu mode...
You want to root your phone?
but let me know something 1st, when you boot your device to recovery, is there something coming like clockwordmod or stock recovery ?
If NO then dont try to re-flash your stock ROM via ODIN, maybe brick your device,
Simple is that. Download ODIN and ClockwordMOD file and turn your device into Download Mode by following link
http://mygalaxywonder.blogspot.com/2012/03/how-to-install-clockworkmod-v5504-for.html
AND Install any custom ROM
if you have still doubt or problem then message me or reply me here.. i'll give you all method step by step.

I think you mixed up something.
Volume down+home+power button is download mode. Which is for odin flashing purpose.
I do believe you wanna root your phone by update thru recovery. The 3e recovery is samsung stock recovery, you can root your phone thru update related file.
To flash or install rom thru sd card you must be in custom recovery not the 3e stock recovery. That means you must be root your phone 1st thru stock recovery.
Use search button and find * dr.ketan note 2 rooting guide. It is most comprehensive guide to newbie. ( and remember to press thanks button on dr.ketan tread.)
Warning: check you model thru antutu scores before do anything.
Good luck mate.

Sound interesting. ....if you press volume up+home+power what mode you get?
Im really have no ideal at all. Although I knew same of the devices like korean galaxy s having different way to boot into download mode if compare with galaxy s international model.
If I were u, I will :
- double check device s model and bootloader.
- flash related stock rom thru pc odin.
- root devices with cf root thru pc odin .
And see what happen.

Some more details would help me understand better. What I'd love to know is.
1. What is the current state of the phone ?
2. Is it rooted or Are you trying to root ? If so what process.
3. Are you trying to flash a rom or Recovery or what ?
4. Last but not least. What rom and version you currently have on there ?

You didn't specify how you got here .What did you try to do, that left you in this state ? Am I assuming correctly that you somehow managed to wipe system partition and have only the stock recovery ?
If the phone is in Recovery mode, Odin will not work. You will need to reboot the phone into Download mode. To do this, you pull the battery out, volume down, home, and power button at the same time until you see the Samsung logo, and then release. You will see a warning message with bright yellow triangle and will say Downloading. Once that is done, connect to the PC.
Using ODIN, first flash a custom recovery such as TWRP. If you want to go back to stock, this is the time you flash Stock rom instead of the recovery.
If you want custom rom, copy the rom zip to the External SD card and then put that in the phone and flash via Custom Recovery.

Then perhaps you should have asked on that thread for next steps. Anyway, if you are still getting the Qsub message when connecting to pc that means its not out of de-brick yet. I'd suggest following there.
Also please first put the phone in download mode and THEN connect to the PC. Tell me what happens in that case.

Perhaps not Perseus! AS stated........Its out of the brick mode and is now stuck in boot recovery mode! The method to get it into download mode is null, because it will only go into the boot recovery mode when i push those buttons to try and get it there! NOTE: its now in MSM9860 when plugged into the PC.

Please note, the button combo slightly differs for Recovery versus Download mode
Recovery Booting - Power +Home + Volume UP
Download Mode - Power +Home + Volume DOWN
Do you still have the sd setup from the debrick thread? Can you see if you can get back to download mode by booting from that again?
If so, try flashing the Stock firmware again, and if you still end up in the same spot maybe try again, but this time flash CWM or TWRP recovery from Odin, then flash a Rom from recovery.
And I can't remember right off but did you try factory resetting from recovery?

Just to clarify, the boot recovery mode you are referring to, does it have the binary/flash count, system status, etc? Basically what do you see?
It sounds in some ways you are in download mode, but recovery is a very different mode, so just to clear up any confusion.....

Stock recovery "vanished"

Hi all, after some modding it seems that my nexus 7 2013 lte custom recovery is vanished. I've tried to flash it via adb, I've flashed the new 5.1 official image, but nothing happen. Every time I try to boot into recovery mode, via adb or power+volume up, all I get is a dead android robot logo with no options.
And, btw, my N7 works perfectly
What can I do?
Thanks
When you flash a new android version you lose root and custom recovery, you need to root and flash custom recovery again as your currently on stock, when that robot is on his back you also have hold down a button combo to access the fastboot / bootloader or recovery, unless you send it the command via adb.
My advice is re-root using cfautoroot and flash custom recovery with flashify.
Ok, thanks! I've flashed twrp (I'm still no-root) and it works fine. Now is there any possibility to come back on stock recovery?
Flashify premium allows you to download and flash stock recovery or bootloader,
if you can't afford it or there not available for dl yet you can alternatively extract the .img files
from the factory image and flash them instead.

Nothing to do. I've extracted the img file from the factory image and flashed it via fastboot but, when I restart the device in recovery mode, it still shows the green half dead androidbot
^Thats normal. When you get to that screen you have to press volume up, down and power all at the same time, all three buttons. Just keep pressing them all at once a few times and it'll let you into stock recovery. It took me about 10 minutes to get in the first time. Don't hold the buttons, a quick press.

So you're saying that normally, on a Nexus 7 with no root and with stock recovery, the combination key to enter in the recovery isn't power+volume up ? Sorry for repeating, but I'm new at modding
I'm saying when you boot into recovery and it gives you the dead android (on it's back I think?) do what I said above.

Done Thank you all!
Yeah it's pita to press, it's why I prefer to launch recovery from flashify or quick boot it's so much easier.
Android seems to love doing things arsed about faced / over complicated it should just be an option in settings, power off like
custom roms along with wireless adb.

Help with rooting (or something) gone wrong on Samsung GT-N5120

Hi!
My neighbors (11-year old) son apparently tried to root their Samsung GT-N5120 with something called King Root(??). I don't know more than that and they asked me to fix it cause (you know computers) -.-.
The problem is that it's stuck in boot loop. It boots up and it shows the screen and all but it doesn't happen anything and then it reboots. Now what i've tried is to start it in recovery mode (Volume Up + menu button + power button) and i've tried to do a factory reset but it didn't work. From what i've read i think he has overwritten those files that the factory reset needs. So what can I do? It doesn't seem to be bricked since it starts and I can start it in both recovery mode and download mode. My computer reacts when I plug it in and tries to install drivers and so forth (but it won't show up on My Computer). So something probably can be done I just don't know what to do. Any ideas?

If I start it normally it gets stuck a while on the animation screen, then it restarts, is stuck a while and so on. If I boot it up in recovery mode (home+power+vol up) I can navigate those menus and if I boot it up in download mode (home+power+vol down) I can navigate in those menus.

I think I would like to install a custom ROM either through recovery or through Odin (the one that's easiest). The thing is I don't really know where to begin when it comes to tutorials and such, do you have any suggestions of a good tutorial of how to do that? And if you have a link for a custom ROM (or stock ROM) that would work for this device I would reeeally appreciate it!
