[Q] Will I lose root or twrp if I flash stock ROM? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2

Yes and yes.

Damnit. What about if I flash a custom tw ROM? I just want to get back to tw with root and use my Bluetooth
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2

They always come pre-rooted and never contain a recovery. So that should work for you.

do as he said, there are some pre-rooted TW based ROM, dl and flash in TWRP and they will not do anything to yr TWRP.

Bootloader stays unlocked.

The bootloader on the T999 was never locked. Using any program to unlock the bootloader will brick the phone.

Why would I need to relock the bootloader?
That shouldn't be required for an update... I know it wasn't when I went from 4.0 to 4.1

You don't need a locked boot loader or stock recovery. OTA's apply fine with unlocked boot loaders and custom recoveries.
You will need a stock /system though and any other file that's being patched.

The OTA won't apply automatically with a custom recovery. You have to move the file and flash it manually.

Correct. Assuming you're rooted and unlocked this is a fairly trivial operation.

TWRP recovery

Hey Guys, coming from the Samsung galaxy nexus. Receiving my s4 in a few days.
Just a few question to install twrp:
1.Root using motochopper
2. Install goo manager
3. Install TWRP
4. Funfun
Are those the correct steps? Thanks!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I think unlock bootloader should be in there somewhere.
Isn't tmobile s4 boot loader already unlocked?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Don't worry about the bootloader I just rooted w motochopper and then from there I installed recovery via Goo manager already flashed a couple of things with success everything runs fine

That's correct right? We don't need to worry about boot loader because its unlocked alrdy. Right? Coming from GN so.. Just making sure.

Did doing it that way change your system status in Odin mode? I Odin'ed TWRP and then rooted. Now I have a system status of Custom instead of Official.

If u have a custom recovery the status will always say custom. Only flashing back to stock through odin will make it official again.

I'm used to my Galaxy S2 I guess. It never said custom. Tried Odin k0ane's stock file. Still says custom. I thought I was going to have to return the phone. It started using hotspot data for all data. I was almost to my 500 meg limit. A factory reset fixed it and Tmo gave me an extra 2gb hotspot data for this month only for free.
What's the difference between custom and official?

Official is all stock factory system. Custom means you altered the system and your warranty is probably void. That's why people try to flash back to stock if they need to get their phone repaired or replaced.
I see. Coming from the galaxy nexus, so much to learn..
Also, where can I get the samsung USB Drivers to do the motochopper?

Take a look ant the N2 and S3 forums - they have threads on returning to stock and i am sure we will see one here - AS SOON as and only when an official Samsung TMo firmware is available.
If you break or brick your device before then you will have to wait before sending it in to Samsung or TMo.

I can't believe sammobile hasn't gotten the firmwares posted yet. Isn't this unusual? Doesn't Samsung usually release the firmware almost immediately?
Does anyone know why that when I download something to my internal sd card and then boot into twrp and try to install it the file is missing in the download folder. Am I doing something wrong? i'm coming from cwm and things are a lot different. Any help would be great thanks

[Q] How to unlock S3 in CM 10

I'm trying to unlock a US TMo S3 so that I can use it in the UK for 2 months during a trip.
I tried the following steps from XDA Forum to unlock my S3 locked with TMo. But dialing the code *#197328640# doesn't bring up the 'secret' menu to unlock the phone.
I'm running CM 10.1 with baseband UVDLJC. Do I have to switch to a TouchWiz rom to do this? I'm not sure why it's not working in CM.
Yes, you do. Just make a nandroid of your current setup, and flash a TW ROM.

Well, there is one...
Don't Odin flash the UVDMD5 firmware. It'll upgrade your baseband to the only one this won't work with.

You can update w/o relocking. Once unlocked, it'll stay that way.

But nandroid backup is complete image of your phone. So it will relock it back once I restore the full backup?
I highly doubt it would re lock. Flashing roms and firmware dont do that so I'd be surprised if it did.
I haven't heard of anyone having a device relock from anything.

i didnt go back and reread it but i think thats what garwynn tried and he lost root.
This is kinda required to get the OTA, isn't it?
If I understand correctly, the OTA will fail if rooted? Or is that it will fail if CWM/TW recovery is in place?

It will fail if you have cwm or twrp in place.....you need the stock recovery for it.....I think it will work even if you have root, but your root will be lost once you update

Thanks.. I thought it was one of those, just couldn't remember which. I may just hold off until I see what others are doing. I am going to look for a nice TouchWiz ROM that allows me to theme it.
Once the awesome Devs here at XDA get their hands on the code, it won't be long before we have a rootable Stock 4.3..
I've been wondering.
Do I need a stock recovery and a stock ROM to update or can I be running a custom ROM such as digiblur and update using stock recovery?

I'd just throw that under the "do not attempt" category. Odds are that while trying to apply the update, stock recovery would detect some assets that don't belong in your current build and abort the update. Also, if this update was successful and something messed up, you would now have no custom recovery. You would have to Odin back to whatever software version possible.

Bootloader and root

Hi guys,
New note 3 user and new to t-mobile.
Perhaps an already answered question, but how exactly do I go about unlocking my bootloader? I want to flash cm11 and twrp. Are the tmobile phones already unlocked?
If the answer to the above is no, what are the steps to get it unlocked and a new recovery installed? Point to a link would be great.
Thanks!

If you don't care about the possibility of voiding your warranty due to the KNOX issue
then go ahead and root then flash custom recovery...
Good luck!
And if I do care about it? I understood root De La vega was good to go.

It is....to gain root. However, if you flash twrp(or a custom kernel, or non-stock rom for that matter) , you will change knox warranty to 0x1.
I've seen a thread about a safestrap recovery, but have no idea what roms work with it. You may (or may not) be able to get cm11 to work with it. You'll have to do some research.
