[Off-topic] If you see a member of higher ranks, do you instantly have more respect? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey guys.
I've been thinking about this, and it got me wondering..
If you see someone with a Recognized Contributor title, Recognized Developer title, or anything else higher than 'senior member' do you find yourself having more respect for those types of people versus a senior member telling you something? This applies to questions being answered, opinions, or any other given situation. If this thread gets 'popular' I'll throw up a poll.
Also, please do us all a favor and elaborate on the reason(s) why you said yes, no, or anything of the like.
Thanks!

What do you mean by that, and why?
Also forgot to mention people should elaborate. My bad, editing the OP now..

Basically, if someone posts a question and it's answered properly I don't care if the answer came from a n00b or an RC. I'd be more inclined to accept an RC answer than a lesser rank if there was some doubt, though

I find myself looking at that a lot, actually. Especially if there are conflicting answers from different ranks.

Exactly what he said. *footnote being there are lots of senior members that if you look at their info have been members since 2007 but have very little posts and thanks. And their questions or answers very often reflect that. So I tend to look at that as well when trying to decide if I'm going to take their opinion seriously or as pertinent as someone else.

Interesting question..
Usually respect comes out of combination of their rank, number of posts and thanks.
Also when you follow particular threads like a hawk, the members worth respecting are visible on every next page.

I will say, I never look at the 'Thanks Meter'. If you need a signature with 'If I've helped, click thanks' then you're just out for the numbers...

I mostly always use xda app so ranks/posts/thanks aren't readily visible, but even when they are known I simply respect those that are respectful. On my last phones forum I lost quite a bit of respect for some of the devs actually just for their portrayed superior attitudes. If you don't like someone coming in and asking a repeat question (which I do understand can be frustrating) just ignore them, all the flaming just intensifies the problem.
I also agree about signatures asking for thanks, while I enjoy seeing my thanks meter go up it doesn't actually mean anything in the grand scheme of things. And while I'll still give a thanks if I appreciate the post, I'm less inclined too when the person asks for it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium

Hell no thanks don't matter. Anyone who's ever been to OT knows that the number of thanks a member has doesn't have anything to do with how knowledgeable they are.
As far as a contributor or dev, I don't judge somebody by the color of their name, I'm not a namecist.
Anyways the majority of posts and questions are more user related, so they do not require someone with vast knowledge of coding/themeing/etc. Anyone can answer a thread like HLP BATTRY FUUUU!, not just a "higher ranked user".

Having all of the requirements and becoming recognized should grant that user immediate respect. Devs too.
Users with hella post and thanks have probably seen a thing or two so they get respect but you gotta watch some of em lol

I wouldn't "instantly" respect anyone. Respect isn't something that should be just given away, people who actually deserve it get it.

Well yeah I guess. Only higher than me is RD, RC and Moderator. Senior Member status is earned by such a small amount of posts that I think it should be raised to 1,000 posts. It should be something that takes longer to achieve.

Thanks for all of your responses guys!

i look at EVERYTHING. sig, info in the sig, posts, thanks(meaning what you were thanked for), join date and then i'll also look at past posts ... ESPECIALLY if the person is trolling. even if it wasnt intentional trolling.
there are some people tho that have 10k posts because all they post is "SEARCH" ten times or bump their friends threads all the time. and then thats why they have 100k thanks. that person i will flame til deaths end and its because they are the people that are detrimental to this community. I admit my stats arent the greatest here but mostly because i have been using forums for the past ten years and have decided I have better things in my life to pick on people that are on the internet. I am here to help people out.
thanks mbq likin this post

I don't necessarily automatically respect them, I just use the title and post count as a quick gauge of whether I should trust their opinion. That being said, I've seen a lot of people (like ben.nesheim said) that pad their post count with useless crap. There are a lot of people here that I know have high post counts that I don't trust on anything, and dread seeing their name in a thread. Then there are others that only have hundreds of posts (sometimes less) that are the most helpful and knowledgable people you'll find, they just don't post drivel. I think the title and post count are great quick indicators, but nothing more. Once you get into recognized developer or contributor territory, I give them a little more credit right off, but to me the respect still has to be earned.
And like EddyOS said, the signature tells you a LOT about a person. I make it a point not to hit the thanks button if your signature asks for it. We all know why its there, you don't need to remind me.

There are trolls everywhere.. and it seems like nobody cares to read directions or care to follow the rules.. sometimes people make themselves look like an idiot which could've easily been avoided if they read the rules or directions..

Members seem to have an issue with tact in Epic 4G Touch forum. Instead of saying hey you made a mistake, they are going to try and be insulting with bad grammar, spelling, and punctuation. After that, they will have a torrid of you didn't read. When in fact, XDA discourages flaming which they didn't read ironic, right?
So just ignore the fools or comment on their lack of witty and un-educated retorts.

I agree that flaming to no end is pointless and rude but...come on.
Even the laziest reader could have avoided this one.
I agreed that with just a simple " No " would answer the question.
Instead, it start with one member flaming( with the " I am the first to flame " attitude..not saying to the first post....just in general), and then the domino effect there after. Just grow up and stop waiting in line to flame members... lol ..

Because it has happened to so many members at one time, does it make it right?
Wouldn't the best course of action be developing ways to inform the member in an appropriate manner?
When members see respected members acting in such a way, they think it is ok. We are then perpetuating the problem of flaming. How can XDA quell flaming when the cycle continues? It has to stop somewhere in order for head winds to be made.

If I wouldn't of enter in my first post, people would have kept going. There are many examples of that for you view not even a day old.

Just a forum tip

I think the development section after selecting it should then have sections for EACH version rom. ie. Froyo, Gingerbread, ICS.
So that when you are looking at what is being developed you are not diluted with newer releases of older versions when you are really trying to find the best of a specific version.
This would allow it to be more organized.
+1 Would save a lot of confusion for noobs as well. Specific mods for specific version go in that section and so on and so forth .. yeah. Like it.
well there is only gingerbread and ICS, some mods are universal so you would have to post twice? and would you split up the theme and apps section too?
Good idea. Truth is though just more places for non readers to post in the wrong sections.

This idea is irrelevant because all people have to do is read. Even if the Title doesn't say the firmware version, the OP will 9 times out of 10.
The thought is good, but in reality.....nah bro
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Why the hell not? Even if the
OP does contain the firmware version, it would stop a lot of the confusion for the noobs that don't read. As for people that DO read, it would be convenient to go in a section with, say, just ICS ROMs, to check out the latest goodies instead of having to look through all the GB ROMs and other things that aren't ICS related.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
If people don't read And flash and destroy....it's their fault.. There are already "please read if you're new" posts or "if you're new to ICS" posts. If people are lazy and disregard proper guided precautions to help inform everybody before they start messing with expensive phones....then a bricked phone is what you'll get.

I think most people commenting are missing the point. Of course its not that important to people like us who come here often and keep up with everything.
But if you imagine the noob who means well, and is just trying to find the information that he needs, this web board is immensely cluttered.
Honestly, thats why you have so many noobs posting dumb questions and asking the same things over and over again. Most people aren't trying to clutter the forums, but when they can't find what they want quickly they give up and just start their own thread which gets on everyones nerves.
i think more sub-headings and forum breakdowns would help a lot honestly. And at the very least give mods a fresh place to police and (hopefully) control post whoring.

Oh boo hoo those poor noobs we need to hand them step by steps and make sure that everyone has the opportunity to flash rooms! Rom flashing is a basic human right and every American should get it free of hassle!
I say the free account registration inhibits minorities like the computer illiterate and old people, we should abolish this account registration so everyone has the opportunity to post anything!
In fact those poor souls who brick their phones should get new ones for free, I mean the developers get donations so they should spread the wealth around it would be better for everyone!

I find it hard to believe clutter is the reason dumb threads are started.
Raise your hand if you have seen someone post a question or news item that has already been posted less than 5 threads down in the first page of general at the time of posting.
*raises hand*
Forums sections are well explained and disclosed, even if people rant and flame at noobs, it is still a noob friendly atmosphere here, the problem also is that devs and senior members still repeat themselves overe and over trying to help noobs and besides alot of members on xda are just too lazy to read, only screwing up people learn to either not to touch or mess with something they shouldn't have mess with in first place, nobody was born knowing all, yet nobody was born brainless, if people screw up after so many threads of guides and how to's lost in limbo around the forums, let them screw up, imbeciles only see the finger that is pointig the right direction.
If stickies, guides and bibles haven't helped, it is useless to clutter this forums with more subforums

Its just embarrasing being part of a community like this idk what happened or when it happened but i wish people would get off the rag and reach out to others in time of help instead of being arrogant pricks about simple things, this isnt a rant its just a persons opinions on whats been happening if you dont like it then f**** off im only trying to figure out why, with that being said

Well of course, and you'll also get a higher percentage of people that don't give two ****s to spend five minutes searching for an answer to their problem and just want to ask away. In the galaxy nexus forums it's the worst because people will ask questions that have been answered when they're on the SAME PAGE as the question they're asking.
most aren't A Holes just because they like to be, almost half of them are fed up and tired of lazy people. It's like working on the same exact issue over and over and over... Unfortunately both parties are right when there are always going to be lazies, and the A Holes. If it's that simple of an answer and I know has been answered/discussed about 5 times or more, I'll just ignore as most will do, or answer by linking them to all the threads about the same topic. Ya it's a little on the A Hole side, but it also answers their questions and tells them how easy and informative searching can be.
..
What's the deal with people that post questions that are often posted already? Or even Googling answers? WHATS THE DEAL THERE TOO???

my favorite part is how everyone is bashing people who don't use the search function, yet there's like 90 threads that talk about how XDA isn't how it used to be and here is yet another thread about it
The reason everyone thinks XDA is "not like it used to be" is because the developer to user ratio has been diluted as XDA gains popularity. There are the same number of devs on this site as there's always been (probably more, actually), but there's waaaaaaay more users interested in rooting their phones and flashing custom firmware.
No internet community is perfect, and gigantic ones like this are going to have their problems...but the true XDAers suck it up, move on, ignore the jerks, and do what they came here to do. they certainly don't sit and complain about it.
@sisekickSquad817, It can be tough to get answers to your questions at times, and there are definitely users that are nicer about it then others. Here's my suggestion, send a couple of friend requests to the users that you speak with the most. Send me a friend request, and while I'm no developer, if I can't answer your question then I'll probably be able to point you in the direction of someone who can. Just PM me with your question, and as soon as I have a free moment then I'll do my best to help. Soon you'll find you have a few solid friends, and those friends will have a few solid friends, and the answers will be at your finger tips with a little patience. I know things can be frustrating, but threads like this can bring unwanted attention from the not so nice users, and then the mods get involved. Its probably best to avoid situations like that, or at least that's my opinion. Good Luck and I look forward to hearing from you
I've noticed this as well and I've been wondering when someone was going to make a thread about it.
I'll just add my plea for civility. Everybody was a noob at one time.
Back in the vibrant forum everybody tended to be very friendly. Let's try to keep it friendly here too.
You can't change anything, so why ***** about it, just give help to the users who have at least tried to read. Most ALL the answers are there anyway. If you watch, the people who are just looking for a quick answer post the same thing over an over. And in different forums. Saw one idiot post the same post in 5 different forums. 3G user asking questions in the mt4g forum. Moron.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Good response to the ops question. I'm here too for anything I can help. But all users in xda must really understand that if your going to participate you need to read and and comprehend basic terms or follow instructions. Now sometimes you won't find something and that's ok you can ask. But there is a section for everything and many users don't care enough to see that. This is why the majority of people will be d**ks with you.
Not mainly because you ask a question in the wrong sectionbut because if the answer is obvious to the majority of users than it must be something you are missing. If you know android think of this like your debugging something. The error is clear just for back and start slowly this time.
There's a place for everything. Including xda.

I've never had a call echo complaint on AOKP JB, and have been running it for months.
I hope you feel really good about yourself, starting this thread all over such a small issue.
The irony of this post is that now when people search up "call echo" on the search bar now, this is the first thread out of several dozens of other threads that shows up and mentions this issue.
What's worst is that the post doesn't solve anything at all, lol. If it really bothered you, you could have simply provided links in your post to the particular threads where those who are actually looking will know where to search for prior answers.
In that way it will save you time and others... additionally, your rant wouldn't be another waste of space in these forums and instead actual be of some use to people... just a thought.
In the second paragraph I clearly stated the little things that people have found to temporarily fix the issue

And its a small issue that every one keeps asking about Instead of searching or reading thru the forums I've seen it asked at least 10 times or more in multiple threads I myself don't have the issue and why even post in here saying This is a waste of space when your reply was also a waste considereing none of you posted anything to help with the issue either but clearly just posted to flame

What kind of responses were you expecting from your post? Obviously since you emphasized greatly that people need to use the search bar more there is no need for us to add more to the minor information you already posted other than proper links... which then again contradicts using the search bar. As much as it is a nuisance, there are always going to be people on these forums who will ask old questions... don't let it be your problem, you're not obliged to answer the questions all the time. There are actually some bright people on the forums that enjoy the idea of helping someone (even if it's a common question), cheers!
Yeah I'm aware of that I've been trying to help people out all day myself

You guys can criticize this post all u want but he's right.. People suck..
Kind of like how Mohan asked people not to post in his Dev thread unless they have logs. And to use the embryo general thread instead yet people still fill his thread with the same few questions... It's crazy..

I understand your wanting to rant and I feel your frustration (Believe me when I say this. You should see some of the stuff that comes our way). Like FT said above, there is always going to be someone that asks the same question over and over and over, sometimes the same question in multiple threads. These people will never learn. But they are becoming more and more predominate in the forums lately.
We have 4.8m users and anywhere from 36-50k users online at a time. That type of userbase is fantastically hard to comprehend when it comes to things like this. Few want to learn anymore and many just come here to make their phone/tablet cool looking and could care less about smali hacks, de/compiling apks (what apk means for that matter), Android.policy.jars,...
Best answer I could give you now is to simply ignore those posts and move on to the next relevant post. If you want to answer, then by all means. Users should help each other when possible. But that doesn't mean spoonfeeding either.

I'll leave this thread open until 11am est if anyone else want to respond but after that it is getting Closed Closed Closed Closed Closed
He's absolutely right about the post but unfortunately it was a waste of time and effort because most of the people that ask the same questions over and over are never gonna take the time to read this

What In The World Is Going On With XDA As of Late?

I'm sure I'm not the only person who notices, but the past couple of weeks or so, XDA has been downright ridiculous...or should I say the members?
People are so tense. People don't even bother to read. Most of the time, the answer is just a few messages back. No OP's are being read. People are just....I don't know. It's like everyone is on smack or something. What makes it worse, is that the same questions get asked many times and yet, people keep on asking.
This creates problems, because the people who need help cannot find it, through the continuous garbage that's being spilled and it seems as if the mod(s) have gone missing...or maybe I'm just not looking hard enough. Then, we have the people who hide under the guise of being a "newb" hoping that, it'll give them an excuse, when apparently these same people have been on this site, for quite some time and some KNOW better. Haha, then they get upset when their answer isn't spoon fed to them.
*sigh*
I mean, REALLY people, what's going on? You can call this a rant if you choose, but I feel better now. People, just read....and experiment. There's no reason why you be asking how to use a rom specific feature in a rom. Not with videos and well written guides out there.

Okay, well in general. Lol It just seems as if it's been peaking and people wonder why some are getting angry. I don't blame those who do. I'm angry as well.lol

It was like this as far back as I can remember...
My account may be new but Ive been lurking for years now
Just the same old same old. Some folks just don't want to get their learn on. The Note 2 threads are rife with it at the moment.

It definitely seems that people don't tend to have the patience to read through the posts. It took me 3 days to read through all the posts of the above how to build cm10.1 posts and while some questions and posts I would end up reading the same questions every couple page's

Yes, like for instance. It has to be near a hundred times, where PA user's asked "How do we use pie?". It's in the settings. Two clicks man, TWO clicks! Lazy isn't even the word.

this would stop happening if all the "helpful" users stopped spoonfeeding this lazy ppl answers... those users think they are helping ppl but what they dont realize is that they are actually making those lazy users stupider and when they have issues they will start useless threads and start posting usless posts in the dev section... that is why i say either ignore these posts or give a reply that requires them to read.. like when i read stupid question in the PA thread i reply with "either search the thread or read the paranoid 101 thread that is linked in my sig"
PS- honestly if the answer is on the same page that they posted on or 1 page back, then those users should not be allowed to flash roms IMO
This happens all the time all over xda happened in the evo forums when it was popular and right now and has been popular. Especially when sprint had a deal on them. Just try to remember it the Internet... We were all noobs

Dude, you read my mind ENTIRELY! There's always that person who replies after you and tells the person who asks, the entire thing. Then, we get looked at as the bad guys. It's not that at all. We care enough about the community, to want everyone be knowledgeable in these things. Think of the people who, after reading, may become developers down the line. They need to learn. How about said persons power goes out. How in the world would they know how to preserve their devices to the fullest, if they DON'T have knowledge? There IS no asking "Hey, I'm a newb and my power is out. How do I set my brightness to a lower level and clock my CPU down, so I can save some battery?" At that point.
It ticks me, because instead of being able to easily find and help hose who need it, or to find out information, I have to wade through countless pages of garbage, just to find what I'm looking for. No to mention, that Tapatalk isn't search friendly. I just hope people will "go the extra mile". Not just for themselves, but for the community as a whole.

Yes, I have to remember that, but it would be a lot easier, if it didn't affect so many people....and myself.

Don't complain and then put these words in every post....John Ch3 "5) Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6) That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7) Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. Your point being? That has nothing to do with people failing to read. Again, this affects the community as a whole. Not just a few people. Haha, in fact that fits quite nicely.

There's also an alarming trend of people quoting everything from the previous post. I've seen people quote as many as ten paragraphs to add a simple one line response...
R: What In The World Is Going On With XDA As of Late?
Whats going on its inevitable for every forum
because there are 2 kinds of people in a forum:
- people that read every single word in every single post in every single thread
- people that come for the first time, open a thread (existing nor new ) and simply ask a question
Both are not to blame everyone is free to choice what to do in life
But when those 2 kind of users meet, its "war"..and this is wrong, because both will need to understand each other scope.

From the bottom of my heart in a soft voice WWJD?
Better here than in some other places
I came here from rootzwiki where it was not uncommon to see threads with > 2k pages. I jumped on the mmuzzy bandwagon and when I tried to post I got hand-in-face - I wasn't allowed to post in a dev forum. Completely understand, and appreciated that as well as the rules for duplicate threads and locking threads. So I guess if I post 10 times in this thread I'll be allowed to post in a dev forum, but I hardly ever do.

"If a man's testicles are crushed or his penis is cut off, he may not be admitted to the assembly of the LORD." Deuteronomy 23:1
lol op are you new to the world? They are called idiots and they are multiplying faster than ever. They think smart phones will make them not appear dumb but unfortunately it only amplifies their retard levels to new heights. You just have to laugh at there stupidity and use it to make yourself feel better.

Well in the "newbs" defense a lot of the rom or mod threads are so ridiculously long and filled with hundreds of pages of "wow smoothness rom Eva!" so it unrealistic to ask them to read 1000 pages to find an answer to a simple question. Add to that some OP are terribly out of date or empty of real information.
Not excusing all of them but, don't let it bother you too much.
